Because we visited in the off-season, we had our choice of rooms. We stayed in the King room. It had an amazing ensuite bathroom with a huge clawfoot tub. I have never stayed at a B&B before and I didn't expect the accommodations to have so many amenities that you would find in a hotel--TV, WiFi, minifridge, Keurig, iron and ironing board, toiletries...everything you need! Everything was spotless and decorated so beautifully--They've maintained such a lovely historic New England home. Johanne is an artist and the decor is a mix of her New England folk art and antique pieces that really compliment the home. The location is awesome! We were just a mile from the venue (which is also an excellent restaurant to visit if you're in town!). Breakfast was delicious in the morning. Blueberry pancakes, sausage, fresh fruit, fresh squeezed juice, coffee. We were so happy. Frank is also really attuned to allergies and was able to accommodate any diet, especially gluten free dietary needs. We regret not taking pictures to share--The home is so gorgeous!

I booked at this Inn for the last day of the Indigenous People's day weekend to wake up on my…read morebirthday, take some photographs of nature and then head home to be with family. A bad nor'easter was forecast with AAA warning against driving and some east coast governors warning against being on the roads. I'm 69 and a lung cancer survivor so I tend to err on the side of safety. I emailed the Inn and asked if my booking could be transferred to the Tuesday of the following week, or the Monday of the week after that. I still work so my bookings depend on when I have time, and too, I was careful to keep it near a similar day to what I had booked. Even though it is low season I wanted to be sure to not inconvenience the Inn. I was met with arrogance and a "sure everyone wants good weather" response, which was flabbergasting. They suggested I come the following day - still high winds and lashing rain - and if not I would forfeit the money I paid close to $400. I was stupefied by their response and will ensure that I warn everyone of this place of bad manners and poor business nous.

The real special times are before and after the estate opens for the day, because you really feel like you have the place to yourself. I walked up to the mansion for sunset, and it was stunning! They can also help get you booked on guided house or kayak tours, and you get free access to Crane Beach with towels and tote bags! The house itself is a 300-year-old farmhouse that has been owned by only 5 families throughout its history. Most of the original structure remains today, giving the place an authentic rustic feel -- not kitchy, like so many other bed & breakfasts. The hostess is cheerful and charming, and more than happy to give you a tour of the grounds (including a tunnel in the basement that was part of the underground railroad!). For us, she made oatmeal chocolate chip cookies fresh upon arrival. We stayed in the Carriage House, which really is a bargain for the space. The two-story suite includes a fireplace, kitchenette, television, desk, couch, armchair, and small table with two chairs. This is in addition to an outdoor porch attached to the unit, and the beautiful upstairs bedroom (with air conditioning). Breakfast was delectable, made exactly to our preferences, and served on a screened-in porch overlooking the gardens. We couldn't have asked for a better experience! I'd definitely stay here again, and would absolutely recommend this to any couple looking for a quick getaway from Boston.

The fire was roaring when we arrived and the entire visit felt like a special getaway for us from work and the kids, even if it was only a few towns away. Fruit, coffee cake or a pastry, a smoothie in a champagne type glass and then the main course - whether it is an egg Benedict Oscar or french toast made from Portuguese sweet bread. Excellent coffee too - which is not a small thing. We had room 7 - which is on the first floor and facing street. I wish there was a front porch - that would be excellent. It is large with the bedroom separate from the sitting room. Which was good to buffer my swearing and crying when the Yankees lost to the Astros in Game 6. My only deductions are really House based and not based on anything that occurred. The communal area is basically the 10 seat table in a room that requires negotiation to navigate around when full during breakfast. The small piano room and "office" room are also downstairs. The house is not conducive to communal activities - it is what it is. Room 7 is adjacent to breakfast room. In fact two auxiliary doors, including a door in the bathroom are immediate to breakfast. I'm not so concerned I could make out conversations during the other breakfast time (there are two sittings), I'm more concerned they could hear what was happening on my side of the door :). And yes, the house limits guests from not having one communal breakfast. There is an 8 AM and 9 AM sitting. The Inn is an easy walk to Bear Neck and all the shops. The area is lovely and so are the shopkeepers. I love to give my business to these people rather than some corporate chain. If there's a show at Gloucester Stage or Shalin Lui, I'd make a long weekend and stay here for sure.

The rooms are beautifully decorated, cozy, and affordable. Each morning guests are treated to a delectable gourmet breakfast that will start your day off right and leave you full till dinner time. Inn keepers Debbie and Nick (and Jim too of course) go above and beyond to make every guest feel welcome and at home. Every July 4th, guests are treated to a festive outdoor BBQ picnic and afterwards we sit to enjoy the local holiday parade that goes right by the Inn's front door. The building's exterior is nice looking. The interior looks, feels, and smells like it's left over from the 1970's. The beds aren't comfortable. The floors are not well vacuumed. The toiletries are cheap soap and shampoo, period. The TV is small and reception is terribly grainy. The WiFi didn't work. The room was highly overpriced for what you get and compared to other Ipswich lodging options. It's not terrible, but I would never stay there again.
