My daughter was scheduled to travel to Estonia to compete in the World Cup for Aesthetic Group Gymnastics for the US Jr National team. She arrived at the airport with her passport card, but not her passport and subsequently was denied boarding with the rest of her team. Katie Kellar from Kahala Travel was looped into the conversation since she arranged travel for the team. She brought up various options on Lufthansa Airlines, both of which were astronomically high since it was now considered a "last minute booking". The new cost was close to twice the amount originally paid, which I don't have. I discussed these options with her and was hoping for other less expensive alternatives. We needed to confirm our plans immediately due to the timeline of events happening and the potential for the team to compete without my daughter and re-choreograph their routine. That evening, I contacted Lufthansa directly to see if they could assist. In speaking to the representative, I'd have to go through the travel agency to initially see if they'd waive any fees and then have them contact Lufthansa and request any additional considerations. In speaking to a supervisor, she said she would consider waiving any fees, but I'd first need to discuss with the travel agency. The first thing next morning, I called and spoke to Katie again. She was on board with my ask and was going to contact Lufthansa. We connected via conference call, but the representative did not want to discuss details with me on the line. So, I waited while Katie spoke to her rep. She called back soon after and advised they would waive the airline imposed change fee, but not the difference in airfare. I reiterated to Katie that the supervisor I spoke with the night before said they would consider that option. So we called back to customer service and spoke to a representative who was very rude and even hung up when we asked to speak with a supervisor. Katie had another rep she has worked with and connected with her. While this new rep said she would look into options for me, she couldn't guarantee a full waiver of fees. I was open to the option as i had no others. About an hour or so later, she called back with AMAZING NEWS! Lufthansa agreed to waive a majority of the difference in airfare, which made the option to purchase a new flight overwhelmingly possible. I tried working with this travel agency a few months ago to book my honeymoon and ended up going with another agency after becoming displeased with the customer service I received as well as what seemed to be a lack of interest from the agent that responded to my inquiry. Since I was planning a wedding, I mentioned that I would like to keep costs down for the honeymoon as much as possible and the agent stated, "Honestly, we work with mostly 3 1/2 star and above properties. My husband and I get pretty busy and I decided to book flights and hotels using a travel agency. Our plan is to spend 1 week in Greece together after which my husband would fly home and I would fly directly to London for an extended trip. Since we were splitting off it was difficult to find flights together since his was round trip and mine was a one way ticket to Athens. I was assigned Crystal who I met in person at their office. I explained where I wanted to go in Greece, the kind of hotels I wanted to stay at and she started her research. While I ended up not booking the tours she did help me research the flights and hotels. Crystal has been a pleasure to work with and was patient with my questions and changes in my itinerary. She helped plan and lay out my itinerary and said if there was anything I needed while I was in Greece she would try to respond immediately to help. Her customer service is great, and I would not hesitate to work with her again on my next trip. Additionally, there was a hotel I wanted to stay at which was not one of their partner hotels and she was still able to make the reservation on my behalf. Not sure if she still earned a commission on it, but either way she booked the hotel I wanted, and I didnt have to choose from only their partner list. I believe there was a $100 deposit to work with them but they apply that $100 towards any bookings on your trip. No big deal as long as you know you are planning to work with them. I would make a note that if you are looking to travel on a tight budget working with a travel agency is probably not going to be for you since they book with at least 4 star hotels I think. Again, not a big deal for me but I know there are different types of travelers and budgets that people have to stay within. read more

So perhaps I am new to the whole travel agency game, and am misinformed. Today I was rudely told that I would have to pay $100 to get so much as a quote for the travel I wanted to book. I understand that sending me a full itinerary with flight numbers is not likely to be a good business idea because I could try to back into the same travel schematic online or something - but making me pay $100 before you can even tell me what kind of rates I would be looking at does not really make sense either. I could, in theory, pay you $100 and then have you tell me that all that is available are first class tickets at triple the rate Expedia has currently. Then I lose my $100 or pay you extraordinary amounts for travel I did not expect in the first place. I understand that it takes some time to sort out a great itinerary for me or anyone else, but telling me that it would be several hours is ridiculous. It takes me 15 minutes to input what I want online, far from several hours. Thus, I have no idea what you are attempting to charge me for, and attempting to do so in a rude manner seems counter to any service industry business. Be warned Yelper, this place wants your money before you figure out if you want to use them or not. read more

This is the 2nd time I worked with Leslie @ Kahala travel to book a lengthy trip abroad and couldn't be happier about it! This is my second time using Kahala travel to book a vacation. The first time was when I booked our son's honeymoon which was an easier event as it was an all inclusive in Mexico and everything went really smoothly. Because our first experience was so good, I chose them again when we decided on a very last minute trip to Cambodia, Vietnam and Thailand. There was only one glitch in our trip and that was the first hotel reserved for us in Thailand. Unfortunately it was an hour away from where our G Adventure tour was to meet the next day, which meant an added expense for us and over two hours of driving that was unnecessary. But the other hotel Leslie booked for us in Thailand was amazing. We tried to come back to her and change that last hotel, but she rightfully suggested we stay there. And we're glad we did. We loved the Movenpick at Karon Beach and it was a perfect ending to our month trip. In summary, Leslie did an amazing job in putting together such an extensive trip and so last minute. I can't say enough about how happy I was with Kahala Travel and travel specialist Leslie Wahlgren. My wife and I were married in May of this year and since she was doing the bulk of the wedding planning, we decided that I would plan the honeymoon; and further I decided that it would be a surprise for my wife. Typical procrastinator that I am I finally e-mailed Leslie in early February to get things started. I have never used a travel agency before and usually plan trips myself - but since this was going to be a once in a lifetime trip for the both of us I knew I needed some expert help. We thought we had one minor hiccup when a harbor excursion in Sydney was slightly late. However with one phone call I was immediately able to talk to a local agent who reviewed our itinerary over the phone and had the situation resolved within 10 minutes. Later back at our hotel room a letter from Kahala was waiting for us just to make sure that everything was okay. We were blown away by how professional and how they bent over backwards to make sure everything was exactly as we wanted it. Kudos to Janine at Kahala Travel! My sisters and I had been planning a trip to visit my nephew studying at Oxford University in England and then London and Paris. Although I have planned many trips over the past several years and tend to be the "planner" of the family, I realized quite late that I was in over my head.
