Always got takeout here, never actually ate inside but still figured I'd do a review because I have had their food more than once. Always fresh and delicious. I personally think it's better than the Empire Buffet (also located in Sturbridge) because Kahula's food is better and more fresh. Most items on the buffet at the other place tasted like they'd been sitting there for hours. Stick with Kahula! The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because I've never ate inside the restaurant. read more

oh my gosh- what a treat. my boyfriend and i stopped here on a whim after a) being in the mood for chinese food and b) driving past what seemed like a veritable institution to the cuisine. sooo glad we did. we sidled up to the bar, and ordered a scorpion bowl for 2, having discussed this choice on our walk in. i've had scorpion bowls before, and don't remember them being this coconut-y in flavor, but it was yummy and potent, regardless. it took us the whole meal to sip through it. we were both overwhelmed by the size of the menu. this is one of the largest menus i've seen at a chinese restaurant, and it took us some time to order. my boyfriend ultimately went with the scallion chicken accompanied by a small side of plain white rice. his chicken was moist and juicy, and the sauce had some unknown element (cinnamon? nutmeg?) that made it irresistible. we both kept going back for taste, after taste. i started with a cup of hot and sour soup. this is a mainstay for me, but the first time i've ever had hot and sweet and sour soup. there was a note of sweetness i've never encountered before, but it was totally delicious and, again, had me going back for more. for my entree i ordered the ma po tofu and roast pork lo mein. i've had ma po tofu before, and am used to it being a vegetarian dish. this one had a bit of a curve ball, as the savory and somewhat spicy sauce was actually laden with ground pork. the tofu was soft and delicate, the peppers added heat, and the sauce was plentiful and addictive. the lo mein was hearty in portion, and the flavor was classic and spot on. needless to say, though we very much enjoyed our meals, we still took home a healthy amount of leftovers (i'm still working on them...). the inside of the restaurant matches the outside. though we sat at the bar, this place is still super old school. each dish was served in its own vessel, with a silver topper to keep the food warm (pretty AND effective). service was efficient and friendly. i would highly recommend this place for classic and familiar chinese food. we will certainly be back when we're in this neck of the woods again. read more

This is a pretty basic Chinese restaurant. Their prices are good and the combinations are a good deal. Actually their spare ribs are very good. It ain't gourmet, but it's basic and ok. Also, try their mushroom egg drop soup. It's interesting. read more

This place is huge! As in cafeteria huge. Kinda weird because from the outside it doesn't look that big but once you're inside you notice how big the place is especially when it was as slow as it was tonight. With that said the food was pretty good I must say. The beef lomein was delicious. The beef in the lomein WAS delicious. So many times the meat in these dishes are flavorless but this lomein was special. There's really nothing else to point out except for the quality of the food. There was a few people getting take out and that's what seemed to be the thing there. So for ambiance it gets a 1 star, but the food gets 4. I gave it 3 stars altogether, but will definitely get take out next time we are in town. read more

Large dining rooms suggest that they cater to tourist coming from Old Sturbridge Village. The food was delivered fast and hot, but the quality was only so so. The quantity was large. Got three meals for two adults and two kids and there was plenty left over. Large selection of menu items. Found numbers of things interesting on menu but again only so so when served. Just visiting town for a coUple days, but I would likely try another Asian place out before I came back here a second time. read more

Kahula... This place has always struck me with a flurry of contradicting emotions when entering the building. First off the decor is super outdated. It has that old fashion 80's Chinese look going for it. Part of me loves that though. You can see the building, and facilities are in need of some repair. Parking isn't much trouble however. The food. The food is that traditional American Chinese style food. Crab rangoons, gold fingers, beef on a stick, fried rice, etc.. If you are craving that somewhat greasy, bad for you taste that we all want at times. Kahula delivers it well. A little more pricey than I would like, but they get the job done food wise. Get take out, and try not to look at the place while you are inside. To sum it up: -The decor is bad, cheesy, but good -building needs some help -Prices are a little high -Food is so bad for you, but very tasty read more

OUR CHINESE MISFORTUNE! Only 5 tables busy. Two waitresses who obviously didn't get along. Service gapped and slow. Meat dishes could be mistaken for vegetarian. Cutbacks? Waitress rarely check on us plus never brought one dish we ordered. Was honest when asked how everything was to hostess/cashier who then apologized up and down awkwardly, could not find waitress for receipt to remove item not served. Then they had a debate about description of missing item while waited to pay. We said forget it and paid for it just to leave. There was a tired morale to the place. I grew up coming here (and pretty much only here) for Chinese, and while it's not quite as consistent as in years past you'll still usually leave happy. When they're on, the food is pretty much as good as ever. I love the pan-fried noodles and Treasure Island has been my favorite dish for as long as I can remember. Every now and then you get a batch that's dried out or overly salty but that's been a rarity in my experience, probably no more frequent than any other restaurant. The biggest problem I've had is the horrendous service that we get roughly every three or four times we come here. I've spent well over an hour waiting for food on nights that it's not particularly crowded. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to when this happens, which makes it even more annoying. That being said though, as long as you're not short on time it's generally worth stopping in for a meal and a couple drinks. read more

My wife and I will travel half an hour to get there and love the food. I don't know what other people want, but we have never had a bad meal and it was very reasonable. The Mai Tai from Bob the bartender is the best anywhere!!! I found it fast and friendly every time. i have never had take out but I have seen people take food out. I live with in a 1/4 mile of kahula... After the way which I was treated on New Year's Eve I will never go there again. I ordered my food at 6:00 pm.. And was told pick up at 7:30... I arrived at 7:15 and told it was not ready yet.. Watch food go out and go out and told that mine still wasn't up yet.. At 8:00 still nothing.. At 8:30 I was told they had lost my order... And that most of the things I have ordered and now gone.. When asked what they were going to do to compensate me for the two hours I have wasted try to get my food. I was told nothing .. That they were just really busy and it wasn't their fault... Not their fault that they lost my order!!!! I will never go here again read more

Sadly gone downhill! I've been going to Kahula for 30+ years and they've officially lost a customer over not serving combination plates on holidays (even the Hallmark kind). I'm not sure what the point of excluding menu options is, but certainly not in keeping longtime loyal customers happy. So basically I can order the same food I get in a combo, but it'll cost triple the price. No thanks! Your greediness does not deserve my business. All the other Chinese food restaurants in this area still serve combination plates year round. read more

I come in a lot on Monday for lunch. I love Stephanie. She very pleasant and sweet. She have a smile on her face and alway making sure to say hi and bye and thank you My problem is with the young blonde girl. Wow what an attitude. She never said hi or bye. God of bid she not on her phone or eating at the hostess/cashier station. I stood in front of her for about 5 min before she even know i was standing there to pay. There been time i come in do take-out and again she so busy with her phone. I've waited and finally leave. I know I'm not the only person who feels the same way. I've talked to my family and friends. She very rude I've been there on a over weekend and same thing. She on her phone sitting at the station setting. Thank god on the weekend there 2 people. Doesn't she realize the germs she passing to customers. Plus she doesn't know if someone have a food allergy and can get them sick or even in up in the hospital. We came here twice and both times the experience was horrible ! First time they shut the lights off on us and started vacuuming under our feet while we were still eating, in an attempt to make us leave in a hurry. Then we decided to give it a shot one more time and the service was horrific I sent a soup back because it was ICE cold and the manager came out to then argue with me about sending it back. The whole staff has a horrible attitude, the food is by far the most disgusting thing I've ever tasted, and the restaurant itself is FILTHY dirty. Nasty place all in all. read more

We have been to Kahula the past two Sundays. The quality of food here is AWESOME. The first time we came we tried to sit at the bar. The restaurant opens at 12:30 which is when we arrived. Peter however was late. I have never been treated so badly at a restaurant. He promptly told us he was not ready to serve and it would be at least 10 minutes until he was ready. We were willing to wait the 10 minutes looking at the menu but he told us to leave the bar and wait outside ....ooooookkkkk whatever. So we left the bar. I was totally ready to leave the restaurant as well but Stephanie came and apologized for what had happened in the bar and the hostess seated us in the restaurant. We had fantastic food and fantastic service which is why we returned this Sunday. We thought about sitting in the bar and giving Peter a penny tip for his rude service last week but decided to sit with Stephanie again since she was so awesome last time. There are two servers on Sunday last Sunday Setphanie had less customers than the other server (Howard) this Sunday she was slammed while he had hardly any customers at all. Regardless she did a fantastic job. We are happy to take our time, have a few drinks and enjoy the day. And Stephanie let us do exactly that. I cannot say enough about how we appreciate Stephanie and how she treats her customers. We will be back soon and look forward to seeing her again. read more

We had the best experience Sunday at Kahula. I have some pretty specific needs, dietary restrictions- and our waitress Stephanie took the time to really listen to my needs and remembered every single detail of the order. I used to go to kahula for banquets and stuff like that. Its good, not great. wayyyy over priced. supposedly they close at 9. i went in at 8:00 once, and thats what the sign advertised. the extremely rude lady who worked the front desk told me that we could not order takeout. another time i went again at 8;30 hoping that same woman wasn't there. wrong. she refused to serve us again! from now on, ill travel to somewhere that's at least good. customer service is big on my list. read more

If you love greasy food then you will love it here! I on the other hand like authentic Asian cuisine not garbage americanized Chinese food. This establishment follows more of the traditional Polynesian food. The only thing here good is what is deep fried. If that's what you like? you will be in heaven! This is a great place to drink. Food is highly americanized. If you've ever heard of xiao long bao you will not like the food here. Go down to Southbridge to Dynasty, which is not up to Chinatown standards, but better than Kahula by far. read more

My husband and I live in Sturbridge and have visited this restaurant several times. The food is good. Prices very reasonable. The egg foo young is delicious. Drinks are cheap compared to other restaurants. Our FAVORITE waiter is Howard. Please ask for him. His service has never been short of amazing. He is quick, and very attentive to your needs. We were disappointed at our last visit, as we asked for Howard and he was not available. The food is good. My only complaint is the decor. Definitely in need of a re-model. So, if you want reasonably priced Chinese food, great service with Howard, with poor decor, then this restaurant is for you. read more

well my wife and i had ordered food from here last year we were told no substitutes so we just ordered well the food wasn't up to par like normally in fact it was dry so this year we decided to order early so we showed up at 3:00 pm and were greeted by a sign that said no substitutes after 4:00 pm which i had read out loud with no response so i started to place the order and was told ohh no no substitutes i said its only 3:00 she said ya its to busy no subs i said again its not 4:00 its only 3:00 she responded to bad its to busy no subs well im not used to paying 4 food im not going to eat,so i said well cancel the order then,and my wife said why make a sign if your not going to honor it we got no response so i said well i wont be ordering food from here ever again also a comment which recieved no response, well apparently the reason you cant substitute and the reason the food is dry is because they pre-cook all the platters and then set them under heat lamps well thats not a place im likely to visit again and judging by the attitude im guessing they dont care 4 my business,and up to this point i was a loyal customer, anyway just thought you would like to know!!!!! read more

I'm so,so absolutely disappointed. Growing up in southbridge this was a huge staple for Chinese cuisine. I haven't been to my hometown in 12 years and this was the first place on my list to eat out. So let me just come rt out. I always got the pu pu platter for 2 , we ordered our drinks and our food, guess what comes to our table I think in record time and even before our drinks u guessed rt, our food. Literally 45 seconds flat. This place was not busy at all there was my wife and I and only one other couple in the entire restaurant at 6:00 pm, which should have been prime time for any establishment. Now as a chef I automatically knew this was going to be a really bad situation. Everything was really greasy, and needless to say the food was obviously precooked and old . The spare ribs were so old and dried out that it was like literally biting into a really hard cracker, all of it was so bad.I could go into a lot more detail but I'm sure you can get the point. I will never go back to this establishment and I've hopefully prewarned you from going. So much for fond memories and nostalgia. read more

I am giving a 2 just because of the hostess. Saturday night busy everywhere else so we went to this place. Hostess was friendly and tried to seat us right away. Place was empty but when she brought us to the section every table had soy sauce covering it. She apologized repeatedly as she tried to clear a table. This should be bus person job or server. We got seated. We ordered a drink (scorpion bowl for 2) mostly juice which I have never said about a Chinese restaurant and then ordered our appetizer and dinner. It all came out as 1. (Can't fault the restaurant for next part) the guy eating next to us was snorting , clearing his nose, burping blowing his nose etc so we took our whole meal to go not tasting one bite. Now in the car trying to eat on car ride home (70 miles from home 10 hour car trip) and everything we taste sucks. After 90$ I would of been happier with cleanliness of a Burger King which I haven't eaten fast food in 7 years. read more
