Miso soup Sushi Ceviche Water We opted to sit outside because the weather was nice. Immediately seated. Our waitress was great, timing her interactions pretty good. The ceviche was pretty good. The miso soup was good. But the sushi is definitely the star! Get the Kaizen if you only order one roll!

They allowed us to dine in right before closing and we are sure glad they did. Our drinks were just what we needed. Bar Staff had us right. The food was beautifully presented and we enjoyed everything bite. Overall this place was perfect . Cute spot to meet a friend or two and have great conversation while enjoying a good meal . The Dragon roll is my fav!!

My partner and I went here as a little treat for him because we rarely go to sushi (I am a vegetarian, so it often doesn't make sense). We had a wonderful time, and I was really impressed by the offerings. The restaurant is located right by the Voodoo Donuts in the little pedestrian zone where all the cute lights and restaurants are, which makes for a lovely spot in the middle of Old Town. The ambiance of Kaizen is quiet, clean, and intimate. We went fairly late in the evening (~7:00 PM) so there weren't too many other people there. Our server was friendly and attentive, and our food came pretty fast. The food itself was excellent. We ordered the edamame and devoured it almost immediately. My partner ate most of the sunomono we ordered, as I am not a huge fan of cucumbers. For our mains, I was pleased to see that have an entire vegetarian/vegan section of their menu, and it isn't skimpy! I loved the inari, and my avocado rolls were incredible. My partner ordered salmon and hamachi nigiri and an Oregon roll-- both of which he loved. To drink, I had a lovely cocktail with that purple pea blossom that gives such a nice, vibrant color and a glass of sake. My partner got their NA Himalayan. Overall, we had a wonderful time and a delicious meal, and I would love to come back.

Best fish I've had on this coast. And who knows, maybe this particular day the fish was just as good as it could be. But I've had sushi in San Francisco, Monterey, Sacramento, Los Angeles, San Diego, Portland, Las Vegas, all sorts of places. THIS was the sashimi to end sashimi. I also had a sunshine roll, which was great. I could taste literally every single ingredient of the roll in every single bite, through every second of chewing. The baked green mussels were delicious as well. The Kodama was pretty good, a little sweet, but still good. Service was quick, staff was very friendly and helpful, it was very quiet, clean, and the vibe was very relaxed. If I'm back in Portland again, this is one of the first places I'm coming back to. 5/5, if there was a gold star 5/5 I would give it to Kaizen.

Great sushi and even better service in downtown Portland! I found Kaizen as I was in the area to visit Voodoo Doughnut. The host was super friendly and welcoming, as well as Carlos, the sushi chef. I was seated immediately, given time to browse the menu, and received my order quickly. I had the sunshine roll which was tasty and had a bit of a kick with the wasabi aioli. Fish was fresh. Prices were reasonable. Would come back!

It took us a while to find parking, and we ended up arriving just before closing. I was pleasantly surprised that the staff were still happy to accommodate us. I felt a little awkward about keeping them past hours, but they immediately put me at ease. Needless to say, we were very thankful and did our best to order and eat quickly. The food was fantastic, the service was good, and the location and ambience were great. Parking, however, was a challenge--so plan extra time for that.

I immediately melted it into the ambience , I felt like they valued my business !!! I Tend to like sushi establishments with a more mature serving staff Because of well... their Professionalism. But the young kids are running this place are incredibly professional, pleasant and engaging My hot sake came promptly as well , as dud my two little appetizers. I might add that the edamame Was received quite warm almost hot. I loved it. My litmus test for a sushi restaurant is chiriashi It Gives the chef a chance to be inventive and artistic He did a fantastic job. Bits of salmon roe, Bits of vegetable. Bits of radish root If a sushi restaurant crank out a good Shishi, I usually don't return Almost definitely will return next time. I'm in town. Stand-up job guys first class five stars Thank you for the exceptional customer service. Incentive. Complex Chiriashi. Try it. It the sushi chefs chance to be creative!!! Go for it

Best sushi, ever! Says a lot from world traveler! Get the chefs sampler! Dragon roll excellent! Pricey, but a lot of seafood!

It's vibe was very chill and mellow. In my opinion, all the food was 5 stars, tasted well, and had no mold or anything. She always came around a poured more water for us also. All good!! Tuff

I brought my niece here, it was her first time having sushi and I'm so glad we stumbled across this place. The food was amazing and so fresh! The server was very attentive and we had a great experience, will definitely be back soon!

4.5 stars. Great fish, solid execution, wonderful service, pricey, beautiful plate decor (dry ice added some drama) and elegant dishware, but an uninspired interior. Well the kraken-like wall art almost has some Japanese whimsy but lacks the necessary humor. This is my second time here, first was some time back. I want to love them and give them that extra star, but for some hard to define reason, something is missing. Like the miso, quite solid but lacking the umami intensity of the miso at say, Nimblefish. It's fine, not excellent. Being able to order unusual nigiri flown in from Japanese waters is a benefit. The rolls had a minimum of rice. Respectable sake list. Although there's a final stretch they need to reach the top echelon, Kaizen is still one of Portland's top-tier sushi joints in a slightly sketch neighborhood that may keep some people away. But it shouldn't. This place deserves to thrive.

Took the kids here last night, very very good sushi for Portland. We're home based in nyc so the bar is set very high for sushi. Service was great. Our server was Jordan and he did great with some of the Asian etiquettes. Good ambiance for date night. I wish they have room for a larger group.

I was looking for food nearby and came across this restaurant. The food was surprisingly delicious! We ordered the chicken katsu curry, kama-age udon (hokkai miso soup), and the kama-meshi seafood. The chicken katsu was cooked perfectly: crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside! The sauce also was the perfect texture and taste. My favorite was the kama-age udon with the hokkai miso soup. I love udon but sometimes don't like how thick it is because it fills you up faster and is harder to digest, the udon here is thinner which I fell in love with! It's soft and chewy and the perfect thickness: you dip it on the soup when you eat it. I also loved the soup, I usually have leftover soup when eat noodles, but I finished every last sip! Definitely recommend this dish if you were to only order one item! We also ordered the kama-meshi seafood. I thought this one tasted okay! The flavors of the seafood come through, but I personally like stronger and heavier flavors. It was worth a try! Parking: This restaurant is in downtown portland so it was difficult to find parking. We ended up parking at a nearby garage and paid for parking. They do have a few street parking spots near the restaurant if you want to test your luck! Seating and service: We were seated really quickly as we went on a weekday! They have several tables and a large table that can be reserved as well as bar spots. The restaurant overall looks really nice and is pretty spacious. The servers were really nice and fast to get you what you need! A side note: they have heated toilet seats in their restroom so that's always a plus!

The sushi is phenomenal, fresh, perfectly sliced and prepared, and the toppings compliment the fish perfectly in a way that soy sauce would only insult the meal We had the carpaccio (tuna & salmon) and ended up ordering another, then moved on to salmon, albacore tuna, and bluefin medium tuna nigiri which was also sliced perfectly and proportioned beautifully to the wasabi and rice below it. Again, no soy sauce needed. We got the fresh salmon roll that had a spicy mayo type sauce and it was the perfect finish. For dessert we choose the cake & vanilla ice cream and were in love with how light and fluffy the cake was wrapped around the fluffy strawberry filling and vanilla ice cream was great as it balanced the sweetness nicely without stealing the show. I had some miso and green tea as well, the green tea never stops coming, I love that energy. We sat in one of the little rooms inside of the restaurant and it was nice floor style seating but still with room for your legs to go in. The waitress was incredibly kind - she brought out a kids bowl & spoon for our daughter and offered a sippy cup too. Overall it was an awesome birthday dinner, and something Id be lucky to do annually as the budget allows. What a treat!! OH! The restaurant itself has a nice atmosphere though interestingly located (the area you go through doesn't match the price point). When you are first seated, there is a small welcome drink which is nice. Our experience ended up taking about 3 hours in total and comprised of several courses of small bites. We were not able to snag countertop seating (though in hindsight, I am happier with how romantic it was so not a big deal). While it was a nice relaxed atmosphere, the experience and food itself was just OK. I did feel a little pressured throughout the meal to add on a beverage pairing (such as sake, wine, non-alcoholic beverages) and was asked at least 4 times even though we declined, which felt like a lot of pressure (that being said - the sake pairing pours looked generous from the tables around us). The bites sounded nice and in small quantities, were pleasant. However, I did not feel like any were truly stand out or amazing to match the price point of the meal. While I did enjoy that there was an attempt at a theme to put everything together, the dishes themselves did not wow me. Some of the presentation was fun/interesting, but some made me feel like I was straight out of a prank and was looking for a camera (sliced marinated tuna served in a "tin" can). We were unfortunately a little disappointed, but perhaps it is because of the high expectations we had.
