Dragon Roll -
Jessica D.

They allowed us to dine in right before closing and we are sure glad they did. Our drinks were just what we needed. Bar Staff had us right. The food was beautifully presented and we enjoyed everything bite. Overall this place was perfect . Cute spot to meet a friend or two and have great conversation while enjoying a good meal . The Dragon roll is my fav!!

My partner and I went here as a little treat for him because we rarely go to sushi (I am a vegetarian, so it often doesn't make sense). We had a wonderful time, and I was really impressed by the offerings. The restaurant is located right by the Voodoo Donuts in the little pedestrian zone where all the cute lights and restaurants are, which makes for a lovely spot in the middle of Old Town. The ambiance of Kaizen is quiet, clean, and intimate. We went fairly late in the evening (~7:00 PM) so there weren't too many other people there. Our server was friendly and attentive, and our food came pretty fast. The food itself was excellent. We ordered the edamame and devoured it almost immediately. My partner ate most of the sunomono we ordered, as I am not a huge fan of cucumbers. For our mains, I was pleased to see that have an entire vegetarian/vegan section of their menu, and it isn't skimpy! I loved the inari, and my avocado rolls were incredible. My partner ordered salmon and hamachi nigiri and an Oregon roll-- both of which he loved. To drink, I had a lovely cocktail with that purple pea blossom that gives such a nice, vibrant color and a glass of sake. My partner got their NA Himalayan. Overall, we had a wonderful time and a delicious meal, and I would love to come back.

Great sushi and even better service in downtown Portland! I found Kaizen as I was in the area to visit Voodoo Doughnut. The host was super friendly and welcoming, as well as Carlos, the sushi chef. I was seated immediately, given time to browse the menu, and received my order quickly. I had the sunshine roll which was tasty and had a bit of a kick with the wasabi aioli. Fish was fresh. Prices were reasonable. Would come back!

BEST SUSHI IN THW PNW

It's vibe was very chill and mellow. In my opinion, all the food was 5 stars, tasted well, and had no mold or anything. She always came around a poured more water for us also. All good!! Tuff

It took us a while to find parking, and we ended up arriving just before closing. I was pleasantly surprised that the staff were still happy to accommodate us. I felt a little awkward about keeping them past hours, but they immediately put me at ease. Needless to say, we were very thankful and did our best to order and eat quickly. The food was fantastic, the service was good, and the location and ambience were great. Parking, however, was a challenge--so plan extra time for that.

Exceedingly large house salad.

I immediately melted it into the ambience , I felt like they valued my business !!! I Tend to like sushi establishments with a more mature serving staff Because of well... their Professionalism. But the young kids are running this place are incredibly professional, pleasant and engaging My hot sake came promptly as well , as dud my two little appetizers. I might add that the edamame Was received quite warm almost hot. I loved it. My litmus test for a sushi restaurant is chiriashi It Gives the chef a chance to be inventive and artistic He did a fantastic job. Bits of salmon roe, Bits of vegetable. Bits of radish root If a sushi restaurant crank out a good Shishi, I usually don't return Almost definitely will return next time. I'm in town. Stand-up job guys first class five stars Thank you for the exceptional customer service. Incentive. Complex Chiriashi. Try it. It the sushi chefs chance to be creative!!! Go for it

Best sushi, ever! Says a lot from world traveler! Get the chefs sampler! Dragon roll excellent! Pricey, but a lot of seafood!

I brought my niece here, it was her first time having sushi and I'm so glad we stumbled across this place. The food was amazing and so fresh! The server was very attentive and we had a great experience, will definitely be back soon!

Hamachi carpaccio. Yum

4.5 stars. Great fish, solid execution, wonderful service, pricey, beautiful plate decor (dry ice added some drama) and elegant dishware, but an uninspired interior. Well the kraken-like wall art almost has some Japanese whimsy but lacks the necessary humor. This is my second time here, first was some time back. I want to love them and give them that extra star, but for some hard to define reason, something is missing. Like the miso, quite solid but lacking the umami intensity of the miso at say, Nimblefish. It's fine, not excellent. Being able to order unusual nigiri flown in from Japanese waters is a benefit. The rolls had a minimum of rice. Respectable sake list. Although there's a final stretch they need to reach the top echelon, Kaizen is still one of Portland's top-tier sushi joints in a slightly sketch neighborhood that may keep some people away. But it shouldn't. This place deserves to thrive.

Took the kids here last night, very very good sushi for Portland. We're home based in nyc so the bar is set very high for sushi. Service was great. Our server was Jordan and he did great with some of the Asian etiquettes. Good ambiance for date night. I wish they have room for a larger group.

Wow, fresh and amazing rolls. Great miso soup and great customer service. Cute restaurant, I love the koi mural on the wall. I hope to come back and try some more rolls. Highly recommend the Trailblazers roll and the Keep Portland weird roll.

Unagi, Avocado, Cucumber Roll and Amaebi
Ploy N.

Affordable sushi/izakaya spot with very fresh seafood and good portion. The ambience is cozy and romantic, perfect for a date night. We shared a bunch of rolls and some nigiris. Availability for the different seafood may varies from day to day. We loved the Albacore Roll which was sooo tender and delicious. The Spicy Scallops and Unagi, Avocado, Cucumber Roll were also 10/10. The B-Side didn't quite wow us, too strong of yuzu flavor and the tuna and scallop didn't go too well together. For nigiris, we got the Tamago (not housemade tamago so I'd skip this) and Amaebi which was decent. Service was great. We're sat on the mezzanine and it felt like private dining!

I really appreciate that you have the opportunity order other things after the Micah is done. I thought they were going to be fillers but they tasted great and actually put new fish I've never had before on the map for me! Some of my favorites were - kanpachi - kome buri - ama ebi - salmon (I liked it more than the king salmon, maybe I have peasant taste) - toro The omakase was well thought out as you can see and we even enjoyed the miso soup. I think the price tag of $100/person can initially be steep but you can easily spend this much on these nicer orders. I was also worried they might drop the quality during the AYCE portion but it continued to be delicious and service was consistent throughout (there was another group of 13 people so service was a bit slow having to divide time between the rest of the restaurant and them). I highly recommend this place and will for sure come back. Some delicious quality fish and my new favorite if I'm coming hungry!

If you're not downtown, they also have a smaller location on the east side! To start I got the takoyaki, or fried octopus balls. It was crispy on the outside, light and fluffy on the inside, with a tender and chewy piece of octopus, topped with a sweet sauce and fish flakes. Yum!! For my main, I wanted to try one of their broth-less udons and chose one of the specials, the Mentaiko kama-tama Udon--house-made flat udon noodles tossed in and onion oil, bonito, and soy dashi sauce. The noodles are topped with Men-taiko (spicy Tarako caviar), soft egg, tobiko, tempura puffs, green onions, and nori. I also added ikura (as recommended). I've never had flat udon noodles or broth-less udon but I'm forever changed. The minimal broth allows the toppings to be the stars of the show, and here was no exception. The flavors were complex, but balanced, and the variety of textures kept me coming back for another bite. The soy dashi sauce was full of umami and a subtle spicy kick, the fish eggs added pops of saltiness, and the tempura puffs and green onions added some crunch and offset the richness from the other toppings. The house-made noodles also made a huge difference, they were chewy but tender, and soaked up the soy dashi perfectly. I could not recommend Shigezo Izakaya enough!

Menu is filled with rolls, appetizers, and ramens. We tried two ramens and they're some of the best we've had in town! Noodles were well-cooked, both the thin and thick ones. Generous meat portion and it's cooked well. The broths were piping hot and flavorful too. We also tried the Fried Squid Legs and Tsukune. Again, both were delicious and made fresh. Nothing to complain here, we'll definitely be back.

Im taking 5 PCs of otoro sashimi for $25?! Speechless! We outdid ourselves and ordered like 3 rounds of sushi for the three of us and bill came out to $200 ish with drinks! Really easy to do since they had such an extensive menu with just about everything from appetizers, tapas sashimi, hand rolls, nigiri, fried items, sushi ROLLS, ramen/noodles, and skewers! Highlights were definitely the: -otoro (5 pcs ~$25) -salmon medley (salmon belly and 3 other cuts) -scallop nigiri -karaage (5 pcs for $8.99) *pro tip to add their house negi sauce $1 or spicy mayo $0.50 -agedashi tofu (fried tofu) -wagyu beef skewer $8.50 -citrus YTG roll ($15) so refreshing with hamachi (yellowtail), tempura flakes, and a house jalapeño ponzu sauce ! I might try for the Alaskan roll next time considering it was hard to identify the scallops in the baked roll but still kinda tasty if you're into the warm baked rolls! I was unfortunately really wanting to taste the scallops! Overall we had a great time! Service was nice and attentive! The drinks were really affordable and generous too! Momoyama definitely delivers in the flavor department. What I was struck by was not just the freshness of the fish, nor the expert cuts...but the diversity of flavors. Perfect example - the King salmon with truffle knocked my socks off. I am not really a fan of salmon. I find its raw texture to often be a little soft to my taste and the funk of the omega 3s in quality salmon is just... not my bag. The truffle completely transformed the experience for me. I was not prepared for how well the earthy notes of the truffle complimented the King salmon. It made the sushi something to be savored without any of the traditional off-putting (to me) fishy funkiness. Highly recommended. Similarly, the octopus Sunomono was perfectly prepared. Often, octopus can be chewy. Not in this case. Additionally, the sauces and the salad greens complimented the dish and elevated it from traditional "sushi tastes." The bracing acidity made me want to eat more and was a delightful preamble for the rest of the meal. Service was prompt, friendly, and accommodating. We had a large group of eight and they were dutiful in informing us they had included gratuity in the bill so as to avoid double tipping. This small courtesy was not wasted on us. Service was always readily accessible without being intrusive. Orders were executed without defect and questions were answered pleasantly and with expertise. The restaurant has a pleasant and serene serving space. The bracing refrain of the "Irashai!" Greeting was a welcome touch that made me smile. Overall highly recommended. Maybe the idea is to help with any language barrier -- the server spoke fluent English, while often the sushi chefs do not -- but we found him way too attentive. We sat at the bar so we could interact with the sushi chefs. We did talk with a chef, but his advice wasn't very specific. So...despite plenty of suggestions from the server, and some advice from the chef, and a long time perusing and discussing the extensive menu, we still weren't sure what to order. We finally went with a combo and were disappointed to see it served in a boat! That just seemed like a gimmicky, touristy thing, we would have preferred a plate. The fish actually was very good, and so were the salads. A shrimp nigiri was the only misstep, as the shrimp was overcooked. I guess I would return to this place -- hopefully on that server's day off! And make sure my order is not coming on a little boat. And skip the shrimp.
