    Cold Vegetarian Udon

For a delicious udon noodle meal and with patio dining (especially if you have a dog), this is the place to go. They have cold and warm udon noodle meals. For vegetarians, we liked the cold vegetarian udon noodle dish and also kitsune udon noodle dish. Service was friendly and also efficient. We enjoyed dining in the patio because it was a lovely day outside.

Came here at 6pm on a Saturday and put myself down on the Yelp wait-list at the entrance and waited 35 minutes. The interior design was beautiful and modern and comfortable. There was an employee making the udon fresh in-house with a machine in a large-windowed room along the hallway to the bathroom. Service was great. Our waiter was friendly and went through the menu thoroughly along with what's popular here and what he personally recommended. He also refilled our waters without prompting. Our food arrived quickly after we ordered. Karaage - 6 large pieces of moist, juicy, well-seasoned chicken. The batter was crispy and not oily. I would've liked there to be a little more dipping sauce. I would get this again. Tonkotsu udon deluxe - chashu was tender, broth was perfectly pork-bone-milky, udon had a nice chewy al dente texture, egg was perfectly cooked with that gelatinous yolk and well-marinated. The texture of the kakuni (pork belly) was a bit too dry/well-done for my taste, so I think I'll just get the regular tonkotsu next time. Niku udon - larger bowl/portion than the tonkotsu, even though both were regular size. The fish broth was nicely light, udon was the same great al dente texture as the one in tonkotsu dish, beef was not chewy. Mentai cream sauce udon - akin to a Japanese carbonara pasta, the sauce was very garlicky and had a kick of spice from the spicy cod roe. All of the elements came together well, from the crispy tempura bits, to the richness of the sauce, to the crunch from the green onions. In terms of flavor this was my favorite dish out of the 3. This dish can get a bit heavy as you keep eating, so I would recommend you take some home for another meal or split with someone else. All 3 noodle dishes were solidly good, so I don't think you can go wrong! My father couldn't name a favorite dish; he just says it depends on what you're in the mood for. My mother thinks everything was a bit too salty for her taste, though; she would personally rank the niku udon the best for the value and salt content and non-heaviness, followed by the mentai cream udon, and then tonkotsu last. She said she would rate this place 4.5/5. Overall, I would definitely return again to try other dishes, like the curry udon that my waiter highly endorsed, or one of the set meals (like the unagi rice bowl with tempura and steamed veggies and mini udon).

I love udon mugizo and this always hits the spot! Portions are pretty for regular sized entrees so keep that in mind, even if you think you're super hungry just get the regular Creamy mentai udon- 9/10 this is super buttery and creamy and delicious, I get chashu on the side to have more protein with this dish. However after half the meal it does get pretty heavy but u can take it togo! Tonkatsu deluxe - 9/10 the soup here is rich and creamy, pairs so well with the udon noodles and the pork they add. They add lots of protein and this bowl is huge. I had to take the regular size home and surprisingly it tasted even better after reheating for a couple days! Onigiri bites 9.5/10 - this surpassed my expectations! Crispy on the outside and soft inside. The bites itself was big and I could probably finish an entire plate to myself and be satisfied Decor is beautiful inside but it's a bit small. Service was not bad, when we went they only had 1 or 2 servers for the entire restaurant so they seemed short staffed so not their fault

Overall: 5 stars Pleasant bowl of warmth for a comfortable lunch. Very thrilled that everything is tasty and packaged well. Gyudon Udon - Set with a little bit of everything from tender beef to tempura crunch in a warm and comforting broth. Pumpkin Tempura - Crisp exterior with a sweet, tender interior as it should. Enhanced by the daikon emulsified dashi dip with some extra saline, this is the perfect side for an udon. Food: +1 Presentation: +1 Price: E Insta/Yelp/Beli: @amei_eats Insta/TikTok: @ameizing.race

Another location for Udon Mugizo and they definitely do not disappoint. I've had positive experiences at their Mountain View and San Francisco locations. Their udon dishes are top notch! While the menu is limited to udon, anytime is the right time for noodles. Who knew there is so many variations--cold, creamy, brothy, nabeyaki styles! It's possible to order rice bowls, but why when the restaurant name is clearly UDON! We ordered the Mentai Cream Sauce Udon and Cold Niku Spicy Udon and it was absolutely delicious. I was a bit hesitant with the "spicy" but the spicy was completely harmless, so long as you like spicy. Service was quick and friendly and I wouldn't hesitate to return--definitely a change of pace to all the other ramen places in the area.

There was no line when we got there (party of 6) for dinner (thank gawd). Strategy was for each of us to order different kinds of udon..we pretty much ordered the best sellers and yes they were all so good. Food came pretty fast and btw, pictures were a regular size!! Broth for the tonkatsu and beef were tasty and not salty. The mentai I must say was surprisingly not heavy!! It was our favorite We ordered sides of tempura (nothing to rave about). Honestly, we ended up with a lot of to go containers bec there were plenty of food left. My friend ordered the yuzi cocktail which was good but too sweet. The place was nicely decorated and very modern. Service was excellent! 4 stars bec it took forever to get our check. This is def my go to now if I'm craving udon

Tried the katsu curry udon, the flavor of the curry was good and the pork cutlet was off to the side so it would remain crispy. There was a side of rice to mix the curry sauce with, and the dish was a huge portion, so it can probably serve 2 people. The tonkatsu udon was amazing - fish powder was available to be added to make the broth more umami, and the soft boiled egg was perfectly cooked. There were 3 slices of chasiu and a decent sized braised pork belly (which makes it the deluxe version). The mentai cream udon had pieces of salmon in it - very interesting dish where it's like the Japanese version of pasta, super creamy and flavorful, and not overly fishy. Been at this restaurant multiple times. The waiters are attentive and always refilling our waters without us asking. The interior is decorated very traditional, which adds to our dining experience.

My go-to udon place! I recently went on a weekday afternoon, around 11:15am and it was relatively empty. It started to get more busy closer to lunch time, as expected. The servers were nice and attentive towards us. Out of the countless times I've gone, I've never had a bad experience with the service! I typically always order the Mentai Cream Sauce Udon, but this time I also ordered the Spicy Garlic Edamame. The udon was delish as usual, with the flavors all mending perfectly without being too heavy. (If you're lactose intolerant I would highly recommend taking a lactaid prior). The edamame on the other hand was just okay. I love me some edamame but this one just felt like they slabbed on some spicy chili sauce on top so the flavor didn't catch as well as I thought it would. Overall just not the flavor profile I had expected for this. Even on busy days it's never too loud, but it's always a good hustle and bustle noise. Definitely recommend for people who haven't tried before!

Came here for dinner on Sunday and waited less than 10min for a table outside. Chicken karaage - dry inside, pass. Corn fritters - good! Tastes exactly like how it sounds. Mental cream udon - Large portions, very rich and creamy. I struggled to finish my udon as it got too rich towards the end Curry udon with tonkotsu - Curry is delicious, flavorful and tonkotsu is well cooked (crispy outside, juicy inside). Servers were attentive despite restaurant being super busy.

8/10/25 I met up with two of my gym friends here for lunch. They were already seated outdoors which was perfect since I brought my furbaby also. The restaurant was very busy and noisy. We got a bowl of edamame and tofu to share. I got the tonkotsu udon with a medium spice level. It didn't taste spicy at all honestly. The broth was pretty light and the flavor overall was delicious. I don't remember what my friends got, but we were all in agreement that everything tasted great and that we would definitely come back.

A hit every time! So happy that an udon spot has opened in downtown San Mateo. Cute indoor and small outdoor seating area, recommend going early on the weekend as sometimes theres a wait (you can also join the yelp waitlist!). All the udon are delicious, but my all-time favorite is the mental cream. Savory and umami, perfectly creamy! The nabeyaki udon are great in the winter when you want something warm and soup-y. Recommend!

We had a set meal, it's not on the menu. It was udon, eel over rice. Steam veggies and tempura veggies. It was expensive $27 but also a lot of food. Also ordered appetizers edamame. In all, price was ok for two diners. Service was 5/5. We sat at the patio with our pup. It was nice.

Enjoyed a quick mother's day dinner on the way to the airport. No line, sat at the bar. Friendly and fast service. Had two combos and one udon. The combo is a good deal with a little bit of this and that. Normally lines form here and I think we just beat the crowd.

The seating inside is pretty tight so your table is basically an inch from the next one, almost like a communal dining experience. Nikumori Aburasoba ($18.50): Spicy pork, pork slices, green onion, and ajitama. The spicy ground pork was delicious and they were generous with the thin pork slices, though those weren't as good as the ground pork. The ajitama was perfectly jammy. The aburasoba flavors were okay but less flavorful than mazesoba, which I now know I prefer. Wagyu Roast Beef Aburasoba ($25.50) + Chashu ($1.75) + Spicy Minced Pork ($3.95) + Ajitama ($2.50): Wagyu roast beef, crispy onions, green onions, butter onion sauce, yogurt sauce, and raw egg yolk. The chashu was average but the wagyu roast beef was thin and incredibly tender. The yogurt sauce and raw egg yolk made this one pretty creamy which I actually liked more than the Nikumori. The sushi chefs really know what they're doing and are incredibly kind and welcoming. I also really appreciate how attentive they are without being intrusive. They seem to know when to give you privacy and space and when to interact and engage with you. They're always friendly and working with a smile, which makes the experience even more enjoyable. This is definitely a place I'll be coming back to, and I'll happily use any special occasion as an excuse to return. I've already recommended Sushi Maruyama to several coworkers and friends, and I can easily see it becoming a go-to spot for me.

Seeing an all-Japanese kitchen staff and sushi chefs immediately gave us good expectations--unlike a lot of Instagram-viral sushi spots run by non-Japanese owners where we've been disappointed before. It's not a flashy, high-end fine dining restaurant, but rather a clean, welcoming neighborhood sushi joint. The overall quality is very solid: sticking to the basics, well-executed, and super fresh with zero fishiness. We ordered the 8-piece Chef's Omakase (which came with a complimentary Tamago for $63--prices seem to vary depending on the daily fresh catches listed on their daily specials board). Most people seem to order the omakase and then add extra dishes. We also ordered: * Hamachi Kama * Deep-Fried Baby Octopus (wonderfully tender and delicious!) * Salmon Tacos * Miso Soup We paired everything with a dry, clean sake that complemented the sushi perfectly. The service was exceptionally friendly throughout our meal. While it's not a "mind-blowing" fine-dining experience, finding a reliable, fresh, and well-priced sushi spot like this in the area is a huge win. We'll definitely be coming back whenever we're nearby!
