A hit every time! So happy that an udon spot has opened in downtown San Mateo. Cute indoor and small outdoor seating area, recommend going early on the weekend as sometimes theres a wait (you can also join the yelp waitlist!). All the udon are delicious, but my all-time favorite is the mental cream. Savory and umami, perfectly creamy! The nabeyaki udon are great in the winter when you want something warm and soup-y. Recommend!

I've loved this place ever since Ive tried them in Mountain View. So when I saw they opened up in my home town, I was excited. Ive visited twice since. It is located in the heart of downtown San Mateo. Plenty of paid parking in the streets or parking structures available also. The place is clean and elegant. The staff are friendly and polite. Ive cone alone as I enjoy my me time and was craving some good udon. And as always, they do not disappoint. Each time I e come, it is always perfectly made fresh and absolutely delicious! I Will definitely be returning for more!

8/10/25 I met up with two of my gym friends here for lunch. They were already seated outdoors which was perfect since I brought my furbaby also. The restaurant was very busy and noisy. We got a bowl of edamame and tofu to share. I got the tonkotsu udon with a medium spice level. It didn't taste spicy at all honestly. The broth was pretty light and the flavor overall was delicious. I don't remember what my friends got, but we were all in agreement that everything tasted great and that we would definitely come back.

We had a set meal, it's not on the menu. It was udon, eel over rice. Steam veggies and tempura veggies. It was expensive $27 but also a lot of food. Also ordered appetizers edamame. In all, price was ok for two diners. Service was 5/5. We sat at the patio with our pup. It was nice.

Enjoyed a quick mother's day dinner on the way to the airport. No line, sat at the bar. Friendly and fast service. Had two combos and one udon. The combo is a good deal with a little bit of this and that. Normally lines form here and I think we just beat the crowd.

Friday afternoon walked in around 5pm, able to get outdoor seats. The waiter is considerate and offered the heat lamp right after we seated. The outdoor seating are nicely fenced by glasses and warmly welcomed with those hanging heating lamps. The waiter quickly took our orders and the cocktails served right after ordering, and food served after two dips of the really flavorful cocktails. We ordered the strawberry one and the lemon ginger hot sake one, both are really good. And food was great balanced with its flavors, texture and ingredients ( which is hard to get from one entry order). The food is kids friendly, the place is friends and family friendly. One thing in mind, by 6pm there is already waiting list line waiting around the restaurant.

Came here for lunch and had a lovely time! I've been to the San Francisco location a few years ago, and it was so refreshing to visit this location. Thoughtfully designed interior adorned with a mix of natural wood tones and cool deep blue tiles - it's a beautiful spot to meet up for a delicious meal. We ordered the tonkatsu udon with shrimp tempura on the side, a mentaiko udon, tonkatsu deluxe and their new crispy onigiri balls. Broth for the tonkatsu was rich, meaty and deeply developed flavors. My mom got it medium spicy which is just a small perfect kick. I had the mentaiko udon and it was creamy, well seasoned and the udon had the perfect bouncy bite to it. Fresh and regular was more than enough to also bring home leftovers. Welcoming and attentive service from the 2 waiters who were helping us. Thanks for a great time! Outdoor seating looks lovely, maybe next time

Delicious udon noodles, and they still welcome customers even 20 minutes before closing, which really shows how great their service is. We ordered two bowls of udon and both were excellent, and the fried tofu was also very good. The only downside is that the edamame is a bit overpriced. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves udon.

So glad we don't have to drive to Japan town anymore for Udon Mugizo *_* Ambiance: 5/5 We didn't get to deal with the noise since we sat outside so it was lovely lol. The layout of the interior was spacious and modern. Service: 3/5 Our server was attentive to us in the beginning, but he eventually forgot about us when it became busy inside. Had to flag him down a couple times for our needs. Food: 5/5 Taste was consistent with Japan town's location. -Mentai cream sauce udon - Heavy but sooo tasty. I'd ask for no cheese next time. -Tempura udon - Shrimp tempura was biiigggggg. Udon was pretty plain but the broth was tasty. -Tonkotsu deluxe - Chashu was pretty gross in this one as it was just mostly thick pieces of fat :/ but the broth was flavorful and thick.

Cold Niku Udon definitely hit the spot on a hot day in the Peninsula. I ordered the Large portion and it was decently filling. I loved the texture of the udon and it was not overly salty or flavored. Another reason why I prefer this spot is due to how it was overly oily either. Definitely a delicious spot that I would want to come back to. I would highly recommend getting here earlier though. I came here around 11:45AM on a Saturday and by the time we were getting our food, there was a long line outside. Parking is not too bad because it's close to the 2nd Ave garage on El Camino that usually always has spots because it's at the corner of downtown San Mateo. Highly recommend! :)

If you're looking to experience creative, new flavors and some exceptional offerings, Udon Mugizo stands out! They even have sake cocktails. This is yet another place that gets busy but no lines thanks to Yelp's waitlist! Get ahead of the game, and put your name in the app before showing up and having to wait. Once seated the service is attentive like clockwork. Drinks and food come out quickly. Everyone is friendly and easy to wave down for your needs. The udon noodles were handmade and of course amazing. I ordered the Tonkotsu Deluxe with pork and fish broth and basically "the works" shrimp tempura, chashu, pork kakuni and all the flavoring bits. That broth was excellent. I barely left any. My friend had the Salmon Cream Sauce Udon which was very unique! It actually seemed to have Italian flavors masquerading as a Japanese udon. I love the fusion of interesting flavors - spinach cream sauce, raw smoked salmon, parmesan cheese, nori seaweed and more! I am inclined to try the Mentai Cream Sauce Udon on another visit. Sake cocktails here are interesting and strong- some sweeter than others. We each had the Orange Ginger Hot Sake and the Pineapple Hot Sake. The Orange Ginger is great, but super sweet! The Pineapple is better and not as sweet. I am looking forward to another bowl of udon here. The atmosphere is nicely done with the sake bottle motifs near the kitchen, accent lighting and chic modern interiors. Food and service is excellent!

Came here on a Saturday for an early dinner and it wasn't too crowded (yet). My friend and I ordered the Tonkotsku udon deluxe & Chicken karaage. The chicken karaage was yummy, especially with the sauce that came on the side. The tonkotsku udon deluxe soup was very rich and creamy, a little much for my liking BUT, it was still good. Service was good as well. By the time we left, it was crowded! Restrooms were clean. There is street parking or a parking lot nearby.

I love udon, and Udon Mugizo is easily one of my favorite udon spots to go to. Every time I come here, I end up ordering the same thing because it's just that good. The Salmon Spinach Cream Sauce Udon is the only dish I get, and it never disappoints. The udon noodles are perfectly chewy, and the creamy sauce pairs so well with the salmon and spinach. It's rich, comforting, and honestly one of the best udon dishes I've had. The people working there are always really nice and welcoming, which makes the experience even better. The ambiance also feels very traditional and cozy, which adds to the whole dining experience. One time my friend and I were so hungry that when our food came out, we literally finished the entire bowl in about 10 minutes and didn't talk to each other the whole time. We were just focused on eating, which honestly says a lot about how good the food is. I've brought a few of my friends here before, and every single one of them ended up loving the Salmon Spinach Cream Sauce Udon too. It's definitely the kind of dish that keeps you coming back. If you love udon and want something a little different from the usual broth-based bowls, this is definitely a spot worth trying.

Some personal thoughts: If you want something light, or try to order for the elders, wagyu aburasoba is a better choice, since the meat is more lean and yogurt sauce help balance the richness. Homura aburasoba is also great, but minced pork is a bit fatty, and traditional sauce is also rich, so I normally find it hard to finish a bowl because I'm too full.
