Casual but clean and tidy, this sushi spot is tucked away in a strip mall with a nice parking lot. It was not too busy on a Saturday at 5, but my friend told me that was unusual. You can make a reservation ahead just in case! We enjoyed: - green tea: hot and refilled constantly (complimentary too!) - miso soup: comforting - blue fin toro app: tender, melting in my mouth and flavorful! - regular omakase: stunning presentation, each one flavorful and unique. - winter wonderland: crunchy and tasty tempura roll - lion king: melt in your mouth deliciousness Don't be fooled by the casual interior, this place is tasty and some of the freshest tasting fish. My husband and I decided to have dinner here after a dragonboat race. I had it bookmarked after my brother came here a while back. We were able to make reservations before we headed there (15 min) away. The place was packed, but we got seated pretty quickly. Based on reviews, toro was the thing to get. With that in mind and getting recommendations from the waiter, we decided on rolls. They were all very good esp the toro ones. There was one that was not as amazing as the others. I think it was Angry Fish. The service was fast, but maybe not the most friendly. Just seems like they were rushing. They were busy, so that was probably why. We came to Kiroro Sushi for our anniversary because we were craving fresh sushi, and this ended up being a great choice. Everything we ordered tasted super fresh, which is exactly what I'm looking for when it comes to sushi. The Deluxe Chirashi Bowl was a 9/10 for me. The fish tasted fresh, the variety was solid, and the presentation made it feel like a nice treat for a special occasion. Just be warned that this bowl is definitely filling, so come hungry if you plan on ordering it. The Sugoi Box was a 10/10 and probably the highlight of the meal. Everything tasted clean, fresh, and carefully put together. It's the kind of order that makes you appreciate the quality of the fish without needing too much extra going on. AMAZING amazing amazing experience! Haven't been here before but was in town and needed to try it. 100/10. I'm a Sushi snob and I promise you so delicious! The food was amazing, we inhaled and ate in slow motion at the same time. Prices were also great! (I used to live in LA so I'm used to absurd prices for good sushi). Didn't get to try the boats or sashimi but I can tell you it looked amazing. Service killed it too, staff was crazy busy but still incredibly attentive!!! We sat at the bar and had a great time. The restaurant is fairly small so you will want to come with time to spare for the waitlist. They do accommodate large parties but again, small space so beware of that. I have been to Kiroro several times throughout the years since they opened. So this review is long overdue! It's the Super Sugoi Box that always brings me back. Years ago, this chef's choice sashimi box was a new thing, and it has always been my favorite here. No one else does it like Kiroro. They put some creativity into the box with the pairing of ingredients and also the presentation. I like the sprig of rosemary slightly lit with the smoke permeating as the server brings it to the table. They always tell you what each sashimi concoction is. The experience of indulging in these nine little wooden compartments is an exciting journey for the taste buds. It goes well with some of their refreshing sake selections. They also offer things on the menu which are not found at every other sushi joint out there. The Uni Ikura Shot is one I have yet to try. I love their Super Fish Tacos which come in fours. If you want a "riceless" sushi roll, they have the Naruto and Mario Roll. I always go for the Naruto Roll. They also have A5 Wagyu here also which you can get as sushi, or as ramen. The Hamachi Kama is quite tasty also. In fact, their entire menu is quite extensive with everything from Chicken Karaage to Unagi Ramen. It's hard for me to deviate from the box, but everything I've had here has been delicious. Kiroro has more of a casual cafe style atmosphere, but the food is definitely not atypical for an informal restaurant. Service is also friendly and attentive. This place have such great service even my friend said how attentive they were always refilling our water and asking how's everything? They also gave us a dish on the house by the chef. Little things like that makes our dining experience even better. We ordered seaweed salad, monk fish liver? Or something similar to it, double toro roll, rainbow roll, lion king roll(best lion king roll because they did NOT over due it with the sauce) and last min we added on the uni which was served on a fried leaf? KIRORO! i need you in san diego. if you're looking for a go-to sushi spot, this is it. this is always on my list to hit up when i'm back home. the quality is insaneee and the prices are incredibly reasonable. for some reason, i've only ever gotten take out here but it always hit nonetheless. the deluxe chirashi is a non-negotiable. easily feeds two people. the quality of every slice of fish is comparable to japan. they also pair some of the fish with different sauces like ponzu. the presentation is top notch and they add kizami wasabi on top of the fish. their rice is so good and they provide so much of it. my favorite pieces from the chirashi are the toro and uni of course. (tbh i love them all). you'd think this bowl would be $80, but it's only $55. a steallllll! my favorite roll to order is the double toro roll. the toro on top, salmon belly and mango in the middle.. they just compliment each other so well the mango cuts into the fattiness of both fish to create a great balance. two excellent cuts of fish for $18 is such a great deal too. read more

Don't know how this wasn't on my radar before but this will probably be my go to sushi restaurant in San Mateo going forward. Spider ramen - Big portion, can be shared between 2 ppl. A lot of times I find ramen broths too salty/fatty. This one was actually really nice and the fried crab was AMAZING. I also also liked the variety of veggies the soup came with. This one is a winner - solid 5 We also ordered the rainbow, dragon, hamachi avo and spicy tuna roll. All were really good (also 5s) except for the spicy tuna which was pretty spicy - maybe a medium - and wasnt as good as the others - maybe like a 3.5. Omg the premium chirashi bowl here is truly a work of art visually AND also tastes amazing! Instead of just a bunch of sashimi, some pieces are actually marinated or seared which I was so pleasantly surprised by since they were so well balanced!!!! For parking, there is a small parking lot in a plaza that is near the Safeway. We got there at 5:15pm and since we were one of the first customers that day we didn't have to wait. It's a small restaurant but during the dinner hour the space filled up quick . Here's what we ordered: - california roll - spider roll - mulan roll - spicy rainbow roll - firecracker roll Everything came out quickly. All of the rolls tasted delicious. The staff there are very friendly. They were also very on top of keeping our water cups filled. I've been to Kiroro a number of times, and I'll say this - the food is delicious, sashimi is fresh, and the vibe is really great. My main complaints is that sometimes the wait time can be really long, service can be on the slower side, and the prices here are much higher than I'd like a local sushi place to be. There's not really special lunch pricing as far as I can tell, so just a simple lunch to feed my 7 year old and me with a cucumber roll, california roll, the kiroro roll and a miso soup was over $40. Maybe that's just the cost of life nowadays, but for me, this is more than I'd like for a quick lunch with my child. All that said, I do really appreciate this restaurant and think the quality is great! read more

Came here recently and had a really solid experience. Made a reservation via Yelp and they had an active Yelp waitlist tablet inside as well. Was seated pretty promptly. Ordered the Super Sugoi Box and fresh oysters and both were great. The Super Sugoi Box definitely stood out, especially the uni + ikura cup. The scallops cup was also super tasty and probably my favorite bite. Service was quick and efficient, and even though it was busy and packed, they kept our water topped up the whole time which I really appreciated. Restrooms were clean too. I especially enjoyed the dragon roll--the shrimp tempura was perfectly fried and crispy, adding great texture and mouthfeel to the roll. I tend to prefer sashimi over rolls, so I was a little disappointed on that front, but roll lovers will be very happy here. Service was very attentive. My daughter loves mangoes. If you like them in your rolls, this is a must try! Personally, I love the lunch set. 5 generous slices of sashimi with accoutrements, California roll, miso soup, potstickers and the most delicious salad ever (tossed greens fried garlic, tomato, an a tangy dressing). Another great dining experience here at Kiroro Sushi the other Friday night with friends! Making reservations on Yelp was a quick, easy, and highly recommended. We checked in 10-15 minutes before our reservation and were seated right away. Even though the restaurant was packed, we could still hear each other just fine. That's always a worry of mine...not being able to hear my friends because it's too loud. We ordered the Aji special as an appetizer for our table after seeing several other tables order it. It was served as sashimi with the head and bones deep fried and crispy. Our goto here is their 15-piece super omakase. It consisted of an amazingly fresh variety of fish, scallop, aba ebi, uni, oyster, and a wagyu nigiri. They recommended us eat it from left to right and with the nigiri as the closer. The nigiris were meticulously prepared with unique toppings. The fresh wasabi is incredible; we ordered six servings just for our table. It was perfect with our nigiris! The Asahi on draft is super crisp and refreshing. We easily went through a whole pitcher! Our waiter even stopped by several times to share a sake toast with us. What an amazing place! Came here to eat on a quiet Tuesday night with my wife and was seated immediately after a warm greeting from the staff. The space itself has a warm and welcoming vibe filled with chatter of other people eating but not so overbearing that you can't hear your own conversation. We ordered the fish tacos, GTR roll, Belmont Roll and started with edamame. I was surprised at how quickly things came out. I'd say the tacos came out in less than five minutes and the everything else within the next five. Each roll was delicious in its own way. The staff always made sure our tea was full and swapped out plates when they were dirty. There's plenty of parking and frozen yogurt next door. I came here for a date night (Saturday) and everything we ordered was exquisite. The quality of the fish was phenomenal and the chefs are meticulous with how they prepare and present the sushi. Superb! For our two rolls we ordered a double toro and the house roll. Both were exceptional, but I would have enjoyed the double toro more if it was slightly less saucy. The unagi sauce made it too sweet. Perhaps if the sauce was a thin line beneath the rolls instead of drizzled on top of the sushi. --The house kiroro roll was good as is. Now for the sake sashimi. At first glance, the cuts seemed too thin, but once we tasted how rich and luxurious the salmon was, the thinner cuts made sense. For our nigiris, we ordered the black seabream, the hamachi, and tuna belly. --The black seabream was amazing! I've never had it before and I wish more sushi restaurants in the southbay carried this on the menu. --The hamachi was good but not my favorite of the nigiri only because the ponzu sauce was too overpowering. It needed a lighter touch; just a small drop of the citrus would suffice. And lastly, the amberjack. Again, a fish I've never had before. Soooo good! There was a smokiness that really complimented the fish. A big thank you to our server Andy who was very warm and helpful when I couldn't decide between the two seabreams. Another visit to kiroro sushi! This time I went with a party of 8 including my clients which the restaurant was barely able to seat. They did their best to accommodate but I think maybe 2-4 is the sweet spot for kiroro sushi, especially during busy times where they had to weave around our table to serve the others. My client kept asking to retake pictures which I could see was annoying the busy servers...sorry and thank you for your patience! I was in the area on a Saturday at 6:00PM and Kiroro Sushi looked pretty solid from the outside, so we decided to give it a try -- and I'm glad we did. There was no line. The menu had a really good selection, and every single item we ordered tasted very good. The sushi was super fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with care. Everything felt high-quality and well done. You can definitely tell the chefs take a lot of pride in their craft, and that the focus here is 100% on the sushi. Service was decent. We weren't really greeted, directed, or spoken to in the warmest tone. They weren't rude or anything -- just not particularly friendly or attentive in that extra hospitable way. It honestly felt like they're not there to add fluff... they're there to make good sushi, and that's where all the energy goes. For example, I asked if a plate could be cleared since we had a lot on the table, and the staff member said he'd do it later. And his face was displeased the entire time. That didn't make me feel the most welcomed, but I brushes it aside since I'm there for good sushi. That said, he did come by a few times to refill our waters, which I appreciated. We ordered a regular omakase each which includes 10 pieces of nigiri. We also ordered the hamachi truffle and one regular roll (the el Camino roll). We honestly didn't need anything outside of the omakase cause the 10 piece nigiri was plenty for each of us. We were being greedy lol they also brought out edamame for the table so that was nice to have. the fish was fresh and delicious. Definitely favored the nigiri's over the sashimi and rolls so if you come with just one other person, you won't need to order too much if you get the omakase. Will be coming back to try other things! I was easily able to make a reservation for Sat night dinner for 6. I do think any larger groups than 6 would be slightly too big, as the restaurant itself isn't the largest. The fish was fresh and tasty! They have a decent selection of sake and also have pitchers of draft beer. Parking in the plaza was easy too. Super sugoi box - great for sharing with a bigger party. The pieces in the box were also on the larger side, which was nice. All were tasty. Super omakase - also had larger pieces of sushi here. You could probably share this between two people and maybe add one more roll if you're really hungry. White fish carpaccio - pretty good, but there were a lot of crispy onions that slightly overpowered the fish. Still tasty though. Fresh whole aji sashimi - this was a daily special. My friend and I are in California for a business trip and walked over to Kiroro Sushi based on other reviews, this spot seemed like it would satisfy our food cravings! We made reservations through Yelp for 7pm on a Wednesday. We got there and it was almost packed but saw our cute little 2 seater table with a reserved sign! The space is smaller and more intimate but very clean and has a very Japanese authentic vibe! They only serve sake and beer, no cocktails which I found very intriguing so we were challenged to find a good sake. We tried the same flight and then ordered a bottle of the one we wanted but they were out so we got the second best. However towards the end, the server said there were two shots left of the one we ordered and just provided it to us which was very nice and unexpected. The servers were kind and attentive. The food ... oh my gosh! Best sushi we have ever had. The fish was absolutely fresh and the sauces were on point. I am keeping this as a 5 star since our experience was very nice but it would be best if all the crab for their rolls are real crab instead of an charge of $4 and some change to make it real crab. We visited Kiroro Sushi for dinner and had an awesome experience! I had made a same-day reservation on a Tuesday, but probably didn't need one. The interior had plenty of seating (both tables and sushi bar) and a casual ambiance. We started with Miso Soup (tasty as usual) and the Spicy Cracker appetizer to share. This came as 4 pieces and the nori cracker went great with the spicy tuna and jalapeño. Next, I ordered two sushi rolls - the Romeo & Julie and Double Toro. Both were incredible! The fish was so fresh and the menu featured so many creative signature rolls. I loved the way the menu was organized into sections like "Salmon Lovers" and "Tuna Lovers". My friends' rolls were fantastic as well, including the Angry Fish roll, Spicy Hamachi roll, Kiroro roll, and Spicy Tuna Crunch. One of my friends had a miscommunication with ordering, and our server immediately removed the extra roll from our bill. Service was shockingly fast and super friendly. This place is a family fave! Especially for vegetarians! My family and I don't eat meat/fish so you can imagine finding a Japanese place that had non-seafood options is tough. So my sister stumbled upon this place a few years back while searching Yelp and they have such a big menu for vegetarians!
