If you are able enjoy cheap, overly sweetened, weak, or otherwise commercialized crap posing as coffee for your morning caffeine fix, I would suggest that you never, ever, ever, go to this coffee shop. They will ruin Starbucks for you and turn you into a coffee snob. But in all seriousness, five star place all around. Personally, I think this is one of the better coffee shops in Denver. I'm a huge fan of their iced mochas but they have something for everyone! Try their Chai Tea Latte with rice milk... amazing! The staff is nice and they move drinks fairly quickly so you're not milling around waiting. The shop is small and usually full of the college crowd but what do you expect when you're basically on-campus? Parking can be a challenge if you have to drive there but it's a nice neighborhood so the short walk won't hurt you. They're also very reasonably priced. read more

Eric's Denver Coffee Quest Episode 4 This was a tough call. As of Episode 3, Pablo's was the clear and present winner in my Denver Coffee Quest. Kaladi is a VERY close tie. For those who have been following my Denver Coffee Quest, you know it's all about the espresso. These guys hit it out of the park. The Espresso was hearty and flavorful, but not bitter...smooth like velvet, just like my beloved Lux back in Phoenix, whom I desperately miss. It's also a great space in a vibrant location. They also play great music, so it's almost everything I could have asked for. What is missing, you may ask, besides Lux's belly bacon which is the BEST in the world? Well, Kaladi seems to live up to what other reviewers have mentioned about their service. When I went to place my order, I apparently interrupted the gentleman behind the counter who was engaged in conversation with another patron. As best I can tell, the patron had placed her order and this was a bit of a personal conversation. Anyway, I was left with the distinct impression that I had imposed on the staff member. He barely said a word to me, and after I paid, I did not even get a "thank you". I suppose I was a bit of jerk wanting to buy a cup of coffee, but is that the impression that a business wants to leave on a customer? Kaladi is a good 5 miles from where I live, so it was a bit of a downer to receive such impersonal service. I guess I'm a glutton for punishment because, despite this, I would come back...the coffee is THAT good. I normally try to write reviews of places I love and just try to get past the bad experiences. However, Kaladi was just such bad customer service. I walked in with no other customers before or after me, so it wasn't like they were particularly busy. I ordered a drink, they rang me up, and I paid, including a tip. Well, turns out they forgot they were out of it. So I ordered a different drink, same price, and they said it would be out in a few minutes. I was with 2 other people who ordered after me and received their drinks, as well watched one woman come in who apparently knew the baristas. They started flirting and talking for another 5 minutes. I finally went up and asked if I had missed them calling my name for my drink. He looked confused at first, asked what I had ordered, and then said he forgot to make it. At this point I was frustrated and just wanted my money back. I asked for a refund, and he said to me "Would you rather just make it yourself?" Sure! I come to a coffee shop to wait ten minutes for a drink that I then have to make myself. I don't really know the intention behind the question, but none of the experience screamed professionalism or good customer service. This was my first and final time at this cafe. I really liked the vibe of this coffee shop. It seemed to draw a fun crowd. There was a good mix of ages there, but lots of students from DU. While it has a great vibe, there are not many tables for studying and spending larger quantities of time there. I had a hard time finding a good place to park. Everything close is a 1 hour limit, so if you want to stay long then you will need to move your car.... The prices were comparable to other coffee shops in the Denver area. I ordered a latte, and it was very tasty. The servers were friendly, and they made my latte quickly. I would recommend this coffee house to others!! read more

This is a review of the coffee shop and its employees, Not Kaladi coffees or espresso. We would vote Kaladi's espresso as the best in class here in Denver, and grade a couple of their coffee offerings like, the Guatemalan and Tanzanian, with an A+. HOWEVER, going to to coffee shop should be a positive experience and way too often, a trip to Kaladis' has been a bad one. Specifically, because of the arrogance of several baristas. I am not going to name anyone because then Yelp would most likely not publish this but there is a certain female barista who has worked there for many years who in our opinion, as people involved the business community, could not get a job anywhere else because of such a snobby attitude. At first, I was a bit apprehensive about coming here after reading reviews about rude service. I finally came in one day, and I don't understand what I was scared of! I've been to locally-owned coffee shops before, so maybe I'm used to their "behavior," but I didn't see anything wrong with it. They acted like real human beings which was refreshing. My only complaint is the lack of seating! I think they could re-arrange things to make at least a few more spots available. All the same, I'd recommend it! Probably some of the worst coffee and ice tea drinks I've ever had. We go to jelly all the time and have come in for coffee multiple times while we wait and every time it's a let down. Just recently getting back from Italy., I've been on a mission to find a good cappuccino in Denver. I've been failing miserably until my good friend Mary brought me here. If you're looking for cappuccino greatness, this is the place to be. The barista took great care of each drink they made. Although we ordered 3 cappuccinos, I noticed carefully that the barista foamed each milk separately for each of the drinks. It is that extra care and technique that makes each cup unique and pleasant. I do not think I've been to a coffee house that air roasts their coffee beans. How do describe the cappuccinos here? Sprouted like a rose from the lips.. or the smell of summer under the Tuscan sun.. Am I being to dramatic? Go to Italy and have a cappuccino yourself and you will truly understand. I am unfortunately a coffee snob, being a barista does that to you. As a result I am always searching for good espresso while traveling, so upon seeing the reviews of Kaladi brothers I thought this would be a no-brainer. I wanted to like this place, so I gave it two tries; neither lived up to the hype of other yelp reviews broadcasting the greatness of their espresso. This review is for their espresso, ability to steam milk & blend the two to craft a cappuccino. The first time I went, I ordered a cappuccino in traditionally the smallest size served in the U.S., 6-8oz with two shots of espresso. The foam was lumpy, not quite bad, but a mix between bubbly and micro foam, maybe an inexperienced barista? Either way it didn't convey the flavor of the espresso and the milk blended together. The espresso was bitter and was sitting on the bottom of the cup. It tasted like a generic grocery store brand coffee, not an independent roaster of quality coffee. There were no delicate notes or sweetness in the espresso after being mixed/poured with the milk. It makes me think that there was not a pour process at all, but rather the foam was lumped on top of the espresso and minimal milk was added. The cappuccino was not equals thirds, which is hard to achieve, but that cappuccino was severely off the mark. Maybe they are striving for the Italian style cappuccino where micro foam doesn't matter and foam gets lumped on top? Not wanting to be hasty to judge I decided to come back another time to give them a more balanced shot on whether this was a one off mistake. Round two I decided not to "custom order" a cappuccino and just got their version of a "small cappuccino." More like 12oz 2 shots of espresso, same thing foam lumped on top this time a different barista (different day). The espresso was bitter, but taste was diluted by more milk than last time. What confuses me about this place is the pictures of latte art, which alludes to the ability to steam milk and get micro foam, but maybe since the pictures were from two years ago that barista is gone? The other confusing thing is how people tout the espresso here as great or that the cappuccino was comparable to Blue Bottle in San Fran... Wait what? This pales in Blue Bottle's shadow and many other cafes shadow as well, not a close second at ALL. Try Boxcar in Boulder, Atomic Cafe in Beverly/ Marblehead, MA, Birch Coffee in NYC, Little Owl Coffee in Denver, Frontside Grind in North Conway, NH, CK Cafe in Berlin, Germany or The Barn in Berlin, Germany. Any of these places blow Kaladi Brothers out of the water in terms of espresso quality and ability to steam the milk. I would say any of the mentioned shops are equal to Blue Bottle coffee in their ability to craft a cappuccino. I only want to leave this review to balance out the reviews saying Kaladi's espresso is amazing, it's not. That is my only quip, otherwise awesome atmosphere, not expensive, grunge coffee shop decor and friendly staff. read more

I can't figure this place out, it's one of the great coffee mysteries of Denver for me. So many raving reviews, and its packed. At the end of the day though, I have to agree with the reviews of the coffee snobs and ex baristas for this place, it has barely better than par mainstream coffee at best. I wouldn't classify this place as craft coffee for several reasons. They roast almost all of their coffee to Italian levels, AKA dark, AKA always tastes the same no matter how you prepare it or what blend of theirs you use, AKA you lose all the romance and complexity that beans from various locations on the globe have to offer. The drink sizes they offer were too big as well, it was like getting coffee at McDonald's. I got a latte here, and it wasn't good at all. The latte art was meh, and it tasted like Starbucks (gasp!). Maybe it's rated so well because the vibe is so happy and friendly, or maybe it's because of its close knit relationships in the local community. At the end of the day though, if you are looking for elite coffee, there are at least a dozen other places in Denver that leave Kaladi in its over roasted dust. Hey DU students, need to to track down your hard-to-find professor to get an extension on a paper? You know the guy-- the bearded Ivy League PhD who never answers his phone and has purposely scheduled his office hours at student-unfriendly times, e.g., between 7-8 a.m.). Head down to Kaladi Brothers about 10:30, wait about ten minutes, and you will be sure to nab the sucker as he strolls in for his mid-morning caffe latte. I swear, half the DU faculty cycles through the doors of Kaladi Bros every morning every day. Does Kaladi Bros deserve its reputation as the best espresso in town, or is it just more East Coast liberal taste-mongers forcing their snooty biases on us? No, Kaladi Bros is the real deal-- and here's why: 1) They roast their own on site; the espresso roast is dark, bracing yet smooth, not too acidic, and has hints of chocolate and what I think of as smokiness; 2) they have some of the best machines in the world, imported from Italy; 3) their baristas are trained to make a good espresso and are not simply button pushing monkeys, and 4)--this is important--the water temperature as it travels through the machine is calibrated by Kaladis to be at the precise degree that it needs to be at in that stage so when it comes out and hits the tamped coffee it produces the optimal shot of espresso. Kaladis has really reduced their espresso to a scientifically reproducible outcome, and that gives you a consistently great espresso. Nothing else in town comes close. read more

This is another one of my favorite Denver places. It is awesome that they sell/use exclusively fair trade, shade grown, sustainably grown and organic coffees. Their drinks are flat-down some of the best coffee's I've ever had. Nearly everything is veganizable and their Venetian Cream is to die for (also vegan). That being said, I have to agree with other Yelpers that the service and environment vary a lot. I've been and had a great time, but I've also had to whip out my street fighting skills to secure a table. Kicking ass before morning coffee and email check is never recommended. Kaladi's is still worth a try and a vastly more ethically sound choice than Starbucks. read more

Customer service SUCKS. I asked them a simple question about their beans and they laughed ... not a friendly laugh, but an "oh-my-God-you're-stupid" laugh. Have never been smiled at. It's kind of one of those placed where you walk up to the register/counter and you're stared at with a frown until you decide to just start telling them what you want. Ambience is not good. But, SH*T! Their espresso is amazing. So what's a girl to do? I would never have gone to Kaladi coffee if I didn't meet the owners and staff at a party-- just because I don't live or work or travel past it much. However, I'm glad I met them (and that they told me to go to Kaladi)-- the coffee was great, and it has a fun atmosphere. It has sort of a barn type feel-- big burlap coffee sacks and lots of woodiness around. I'm happy to hear they have added wireless. Overall though, if you are on a search for a place to get really good coffee, this is one to try. read more

maybe i need to try the espresso since that seems to be what everyone's talking about. i have gotten coffee there several times before class and ask for a splash of soy and each time it's like i can taste more soy than coffee. maybe i'm just bitchin about their uber generousness with the soy and i should just shut up. next time i'm asking for a tablespoon and see if the literal works. also, the seating pretty much sucks, it would be way cooler if there was more room to sit and do some work before class, but sadly i don't think they have any room to expand. overall, if i'm not in a rush or tied to campus, i'll head to stella's. read more

Five stars for the coffee they roast, the amazing ability to pull a great, if not perfect shot of espresso every time & the fun staff (and owners). As everyone says, its a bit small & cozy. I go for the coffee & the staff. I don't usually hang out because I am always on the go. I am over my days of hanging out in coffee houses. I prefer to take it home & read or type in peace. If you do like hanging out it is tough, but make friends with someone at a table with an extra chair. Yeah, the coffee is great but I need a great place to study, so this review is based on being in the shop besides the coffee. The place is loud and the people are not very nice. The internet is not very reliable. I have gone to this place a couple times now and love the idea of it but hate the execution. So I'm moving away. And I haven't tried everything I've wanted in Denver so I'm attempting to cram all I can into the next few months. Lord knows I don't have enough opinions on stuff. I figured I'd start by visiting or revisiting some coffee around town. I've heard things about Kaladi Brothers; things from local reviews, customers, and employees. But never anything that inspired me to bike the extra mile and a half south of my usual southern border, South Pearl. Had I been told about the coffee culture oozing from every pore of Kaladi's cafe, I'd have taken the trip a lot sooner. Self dosing grinders, a pneumatic tamper, a nice big three group La Marzocco, imported Italian steaming pitchers, coffee-centric art, photos and posters, a vintage piston machine on display, shelves full of bagged green beans, six employees behind the counter talking coffee, and a large emblem on the wall proclaiming "Kaladi Coffee Academy." But for all that coffee flourish, I'm a bit unimpressed. My espresso seemed flat. No highs, no lows. Not much for body. Not bad, but hovering around average for Denver. A distinct carbony taste. So, I tried a cappuccino. The small is a 12oz; yes, I'm sure I they have an 8oz had I asked but I like to stay on menu. The capp looked promising on presentation, but towed the line of the espresso. The milk had none of the sweetness or rich mouthfeel that I was hoping would do some good for the coffee. A lot of fluff, really. But back to the feel of the place. I don't think I was expecting too much from the coffee after seeing the cafe. The counter and cafe is well designed for flow, definitely by a seasoned barista and has flexible, communal seating. A friendly, DIY style. Shit, who can't like a place with a Steve McQueen themed bathroom? It was cool to see baristas having serious coffee talk amongst themselves and with customers buying whole bean. My service was prompt, but I did notice that the ample amount of (I'm assuming) employees behind the bar didn't put conversation on hold and all hop to when the line hit 8+ people. I still need to try the drip coffee and I'll be back to give the espresso another go. Coffee culture advocates of this level deserve more than one shot. read more
