This is the only butcher shop i go to now. Many are very expensive and not that much better than the store. I do consume a lot of meat and they have the best chicken breast and the hamburger meat smells like steak on the grill and tastes excellent. Had a great experience. Got two steaks. Some of the best I ever had. I got a strip and ribeye . So tender and flavorful. No seasoning or sauce just good ole meat. It was my first time in there. I have been to this place on 3 separate occasions. The first was about 10 years ago to check out their meat selection- it was busy, no greeting but I attributed it to how busy it was. The second time a few years later, I was 1 of 2 costumers and I was never acknowledged or looked at. My last visit, a week ago I decided to give it another try and made my first purchase. While the meat was good- to me the customer service is lacking. I felt like the regulars that came in were given acknowledgement and a friendly "hi." This is a great little shop! They have a nice selection of meats, cheeses, side salads, sauces and marinades. The meat is of a much higher quality than you can get at any of the grocery stores in town, and I think the prices are good. They also make sandwiches and serve homemade soups everyday. Yum. Their hot dogs are the best hot dogs I've ever had...they are GIANT. The staff is very friendly and helpful. They also have a nice selection of frozen, pre-seasoned or stuffed meats and fish for those nights when you're too tired or busy to put your all into dinner prep. Fridays they sell fresh fish unless it is a really busy weekend (like the Friday before a holiday). They don't take credit cards, but they do take debit cards and cash. A very cute butcher/specialty store in downtown CL. They have a great looking meat case with all diff cuts of meat from handmade sausages to steaks and even some frozen seafood. But the real reason I like coming here are for the dry goods. They have a great selection of dry soup/stew starter mixes that are from all around the country. They also sell Stone Wall Kitchen which is a very nice brand and carry a good amount of their products. Kalck's also has a wide variety of sauces, hot sauces, dressings, marinades, spice rubs and specialty spices. They also have a little wine room in the back with wines you won't see at your local grocery store. If you are looking for something special, go to Kalck's a look around. My family and I have been going to Kalcks for over 20 years and have never been disappointed in the quality of the their food. I whole heartedly agree with their motto of "Good Meat is not cheap; Cheap meat is not good" I would highly recommend the twice baked potatoes, stuffed portabella mushrooms, brats, hotdogs, steaks and ribs. I have also recruited people to Kalck's with their American potato salad! To reply to Rob, they do now take debt cards and have always accepted checks. Biggest downfall is that they do close at 5:30 on the weekdays. Usually isn't an issue for me but I could see how it could be for people who don't get off of work that early. read more

We stopped by to see if there were any German-style sausages and mustard for a themed dinner night. The workers were super helpful and helped us with everything that we needed. One of the best moments of our visit was when we were asked if we have ever been to Kalck's before. When we stated that we had not, they gave us a complimentary pound of grass-fed ground beef. The beef was super lean and delicious. We made these into burgers for the grill and were definitely not disappointed. I learned that they do a lot of day-of butchering, so that means you as the customer get the freshest meat possible. A culinary paradise in the heart of downtown Crystal Lake. They have all sorts of dips, salsas, marinades, rubs....I could go on and on. I like Kalck's. Its a sort of butcher/gourmet shop. good selection of sandwiches too if you want a picnic. lots of gourmet sauces,mixes and condiments to choose from. Some decent wines in the back room. the meats for sale are limited but of good quality. I like thier twice baked potatoes which seem to be homemade. Nice selection of foodie products such as gravy base, which may be hard to find elsewhere. They dont take credit cards, but do take debit cards. Recommended. read more

I love this place! The quality of their meats is exceptional and they are attentive to their customers. I love the home baked goods they also offer and tend to leave with more than I intended due to those tasty treats. A recent discovery of Grandma's coffee cakes has been a big hit as well. They have Saturday hours which work quite well for me as that is when I do my primary shopping. You can also phone in orders to be ready when you arrive and that should work well for those who are time challenged. I am a cash and carry type so I have no problems with their decision not to feed the credit card mania. Bottom line, this is a gem of a store and I will continue to patronage them faithfully. Prices are quite reasonable compared to the grocery store organic cuts, plus none of the meat behind the counter is frozen (there is frozen fish should you desire). Prices are probably on the slightly higher end of things all things considered but the quality of the meats are exceptional. Owners always remember folks and it adds a personal touch. Wanted to leave a review today because one of the owners, on her own initiative, asked a customer how his roast (his last purchase) had turned out. The customer had been disappointed on the cut/result. After placing his order for the day, the owner told him (despite his protests) it would be on her because she was disappointed things didn't turn out for him. It's these types of interactions that make me support local businesses like Kalck's even more. read more

A real butcher shop offers nothing but fresh cuts of meat, broken down from primal cuts and never sells (with a rare exception) frozen meat. Furthermore, where is the prime selections of beef? This neighborhood butcher shop is absolutely fantastic! I now purchase all of my meat from them (I love that they grind their own ground turkey breast). The quality is top-notch, and the counter help is extremely knowledgeable. There is an ample amount of delicious marinades, sauces and other tasty treats to choose from. Plus, they have a excellent wine and beer selection that you won't find in the grocery store. They now accept debt cards, so it's super easy to shop.
