Be patient when you place your take away order because they may be short staffed. It seems like many businesses on Kauai are short of workers. They provide great service here. I usually get the Kalena special plate lunch as it gives me a taste of a variety of menu items. Though their kalbi is tasty the serving that I had was mostly bone/fat. In addition to the entree you get to select 4 sides to compliment your meal. The sides are a mixture of korean and Asian sides that are often eaten locally. Once yiu have your take away you can eat on table bench in the park across the way or take it to the beach. I usually go here yearly when visiting Kauai. read more

The food here is amazing! It was my husband and I's first time in Hawaii and we are big foodies. The fish katsu melts in your mouth. The meat jun and kalbi ribs were delicious. This place is under new ownership over the last three years. So any reviews that are older than that regarding service or attitude, you can discard. The new owners are very friendly, they get to know their customers like family, and provide excellent service. I found the generous portions for a vegetarian dish to be more than sufficient. I had food left over for dinner. As others have said it's cash only. The sides are numerous and they are very generous at filling your container. I got the glass noodles with mixed vegetables, rice, which was two large rounded scoops, and four sides. I really liked the cucumber and the tofu. Many people come to collect takeout and don't sit down to eat, so we found their two tables with four chairs each to be more than sufficient for the few people that wanted to stay and eat inside. This little hole-in-the-wall doesn't even say restaurant or food on the window. You would have to know it's there to find it. Very, very clean inside. Because it's so busy, obviously the locals all know about it! Someone else took me there and I was confused because it said fish market. So I thought it was a wholesaler. No. It's a restaurant. Five stars, because although you're paying for "one meal" you're actually getting enough food for two-- and it's really good. Hours are for lunch. 10 AM to 2 PM. There seems to be a lot of turnover in the parking, but, we came at 1 p.m. so, we didn't have trouble finding a spot. read more

What a wonderful place for great food! We were immediately greeted by a smiling face. Found out she was one of the owners. Wow! An owner who puts in her time and sweat to make sure her restaurant gets the best service. The food was amazing! We ordered a plate of Meat Joon and a Kalena special. The portions were huge! We had no problems sitting and enjoying our food. There were many who cane in and ordered to go. The jun dishes were the best. Mahi-mahi fish jun came out freshly cooked, delicate, fall apart in your mouth. My mouth is watering as I'm writing this. Kalena special was a good choice as it gave a nice cross section of their favorite house. It did not have the Fish Jun. We ordered that separately and the two together was a great combo. We also got 8 sides with the two orders. The sides are the bomb. There is this picked dried daikon radish dish that is so good. It is salty with a crunch and just a little spicy. The name of this place is misleading as they don't even have fish - or at least they didn't the day I was here! I ended up getting a bunch of appetizers to make a meal for myself. They had some good looking options for carnivores but the people I was eating with said the meat was very thinly sliced and hidden under thick layers of breading. This would have been fine except the young woman who was ringing people up was more than rude and kept sighing as I picked appetizers from the limited selection. Body language says a lot - hers says she hates working there. Then to literally top it off the cheap lids on the containers were so awful we couldn't open them without tearing them off. I love this place. I visited this restaurant for the first time. They have delicious Korean food that's worth going back for. It's a nice little place, clean, bright and welcoming. The owners and staff were all super friendly. They even gave me a tour of their kitchen. The back is also clean and organized, which tells you about their commitment to providing quality food for their customers. I'm familiar with kitchens because I have a sushi catering business. After hearing all about poi, plate lunches and poke, I was anxiously awaiting getting my hands on some hearty local food. Kalena fish market did not disappoint. First worth mentioning, this place is definitely NOT a "fish market" in the traditional sense that us continental Americans may be used to. Rather it's a hole in the wall, order at the counter, get a plate piled high with juicy meat covered in gravy served alongside scoops of Mac salad, rice and assorted veggies. If you're okay with this, you will leave happy and belt bursting full. All meals are reasonably priced ($8 - $15). I got the Kalena special which came with Kalbi, BBQ Chicken and Meat Jun. The meat Jun was completely new territory for me but it was DELICIOUS. It's basically thin sliced steak dipped in egg and fried. The rest of the meat was good. Not farm to table grade A cuts but the type of stuff you would get at a Korean BBQ joint. Sides were fine but you have to appreciate the assortment that was offered (6+ options including pickled cabbage, kimchi, seaweed, potato, Mac salad etc.) Overall this hit the spot for me after a long flight. Love love love this place. I have eaten a lot of meat jun in my life and this is still my favorite place to get it. It's something about their sauce that makes it that much better than everyone else. The noodles that you can get as a "side" is what everyone seeks as well so be sure to get your order in at least before 1pm because they always run out. If you didn't know about this place, you'd probably drive right past it. It's next to a fishing supply store and there is maybe two parking stalls in front of the store. There is a few seats in there to eat but this is a grab and go kind of place. Their tofu is also amazing. When we got there, all we saw was a hello kitty store and the fish market Upon looking closer, the food place is next to the fish market. I believe this place is Korean owned, They have 1/2 of the menu that is Korean eats like chop chae and bi bim bop. When ordering the food, you get 4 choices for sides like kimchi, mac salad, sprouts. I got the LauLau and HS got the Katsu. (pictured)Both were really good and really fresh. Everything on the menu seems to be $7.50. This is a good find and a win with the locals. Probably the best lunch plates my bf and I had during our 1 week stay in Kauai. They give you big portions and its yummy! Its a bit of a Korean fusion which I love! When we arrived we were the only people there and it was around 12.30pm. I was expecting a long line. I ordered the lau lau that came with two Korean sides and a side of this yummy tomato salad. I was not able to finish so I ate everything except the rice which they give you two scoops of. My bf got the bbq marlin. He was given so much fish! His came with three Korean sides. You get to pick!
