The moment my husband and I landed, we wanted to get the vacay going by looking up where to eat. Based on the time we landed we noticed alot of places closes by 8pm.The Fish Express was close to where we were at and they were closing at 4. We were there around noon and it is amazing to see that most of their fish were gone, I knew that was a sign that this spot was gonna be good! The fish express offers ready to go foods, hot food, and also fresh fish like a fish market! My husband and I always just get the poke and this time we tried ahi shoyu poke, ahi maui onion poke, ahi spicy poke with crab, and sliced tako. They don't have a seating place everyone either ate it outside the store or in their car. The poke... cuts like butter! When it cuts like you know you picked a good spot! There's something about getting the first bite at the start of your vacation that kick starts the day, time, and the vacation. Fantastic poke! I got a bowl with spicy ahi and Maui onion ahi, and both tasted so fresh and balanced with all the seasonings. I liked that you can choose your rice and how much of each topping you want to add since it's all pay by the pound. When stopping by Lihue, we were looking for a place where you can get some delicious poke quickly, and The Fish Express popped up as an interesting option to stop by. We went on a Saturday around lunchtime and it wasn't too busy. There is a small parking lot near the restaurant on the left hand side. It was filled when we first got there, but we were luckily able to get a spot. I could see this lot filling up quickly during other meal rush hours, so do take note if you plan on driving. The ordering is done like your typical poke place, you tell the service worker what you would like and there's a small toppings bar at the end before the cashier. There was a small line when we went, and even with the line, it still only took about 5-10 minutes to get our food. There isn't interior seating in the restaurant though, you will have to get your food take out, or just eat in the parking lot. I got the 3 scoops of poke option for $15.25, and I think that this is a pretty solid deal for the variety of fish that you can try out! I think based on my personal experience on Kaua'i, it will be difficult to get food, especially poke at a reasonable price. But for this price, it's probably the best place on the island to get poke without paying $20+ for the same variety. The fish tasted fresh, and I am a fan of the selection of toppings they had. If you are in the Lihue area and looking to try some poke at a reasonable price, I would recommend The Fish Express! There seems to be a decent amount of other interesting looking options on the menu, and if I'm ever in the area again, I would totally give them a try! read more

Whenever I'm on the islands, I make it a mission to find the best poke and this has to be up there with the best I had on Kauai. Everything is fresh and the flavors are incredible. You can tell the fish is freshly caught, and it's super meaty / not too fishy (always a good sign). Love the option of self serve toppings - something that makes this experience unique compared to other fish markets / poke spots. The Mac salad is delicious, highly recommend topping with that. Hands down the best poke I've had in all of Hawaii! The service was great, the fish was fresh, and I love the DIY toppings bar they have. I got a small poke bowl with brown rice, Ahi Maui Onion Poke and Ahi Spicy Poke (both incredibly delicious separate and together), topped with edamame, kimchee cucumber, Ocean Salad, and their furikake shaker mix. My only complaint would be that I wish there wasn't salt in the furikake shaker mix because the dish didn't need salt. The portion size was really nice for the price, too. He had a 2 choice poke bowl while I had the nishime (which they gave me for 1/2 price - probably cause they close at 4pm I think). The nishime was tasty. As for the poke, it was too salty for me, but Scott loves salt so he was happy. Fish was fresh and tender. Not sure if they use msg or if it was the salt because my lips get a little tingly when I eat too much msg. Overall, it was okay. This is not an eat-in place. There is VERY limited parking. Come in the doors and order directly at the counter. The folks working are very friendly. They will ask your name for the order. They have a bunch of poke bowls, as well as several different plates to order. My wife had the Chinese plate, which is essentially a bunch of different proteins and rice. I had the macadamia encrusted fish, which was pretty good. You pay at the end of the counter. Food is pretty good but as is typical in the islands, prepare for a line and no parking. OMG. WAs in Kawaii for 5 days and we came here three times for the poke! So fresh and convenient. It's a small no fuss store where you order at a counter where you can see all the options and there is one or two benches out in front to eat at. The staff is kind but definitely are in a hurry to get things moving. The fish is fresh and there is a bar on the side with toppings that are priced by weight. The poke itself is sold by weight by itself or in poke bowls and sells out quickly so don't arrive too late or you will miss out! The poke is most popular but they do have some warm dishes which were great and some dishes pre-prepared which seem to go on 50% off sale at a certain time of the day! We got some fried soft shell crab, rice and shrimp on sale later on in the day which was great. Definitely a must stop by spot near Lihue!
