This review is long overdue. We've been going to Kama'aina every time we visit our son at Pacific University since they've been open. Originally from Oahu, it's always a challenge to find "Ono" (delicious) tasting local style home cook food. WOW, as soon as we stepped in Kama'aina and tried their food, we fell in love with the food, the ambiance and the staff (AJ, Josh, & many more) who make you feel like you're Ohana (family). Kevin, the owner is there most of the times we've been there and he truly embodies the local flavor of the food we grew up eating on Oahu, from Filipino, Hawaiian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and other cultures that make up the truly multi-culture Hawaiian Islands. Everything we've tried on the menu from the appetizers - poki, smoked meat, garlic furikake fries, fried shanghai lumpia, entrees - oxtail soup, saimin, loco moco, katsu curry, Korean chicken, Hawaiian plate, chicken katsu, kalua pig, Mac salad and more, and off course you can't leave without having one of the amazing and flavorful desserts - chocolate haupia pie, different flavors of HI Snow - not your typical shaved ice....10x better, and the Ice Cream Macarons - to die for, we always leave Kama'aina with a Big Smile, full belly, and looking forward to the next visit. The mahi mahi tastesd good, and the waitress was very friendly. The place is clean and not too crowded on a Tuesday night. The price is not too expensive. Pretty good experience all in all. Would definitely visit a second time given a chance. read more

Tonight, I had smoked meat and OX tail soup, traveling back to Hawaii "big Island for you Oahu folks", when grandma and grandpa would cook dinner. This place sparked that memory, not only from it's amazing food but also the great atmosphere and friendly, helpful staff! My order was entered into the computer wrong and when my food came out, I mentioned that. The bartender asked me "do you want something else?" And told the manager who replied "well that's going to take a long time, but I'll try to have the kitchen put it on the fly". I had already waited 45 minutes for the food so I ate it. It wasn't very good. It was seaweed wrapped cod slow roasted and Kailua pork that was super fatty. The Mac salad needed salt but after getting our food we didn't get any attention from the bartender till it was time to pay. read more

Awesome, carb-heavy, greasy in a good way, over-indulgent yumminess. I'm not a pork eater and fish is not my most favorite thing in the world so I was worried there would be a limited choice but there were a few choices. The macaroni salad had a bit of a smokey flavor to it, which was very unexpected and though I never settled on the idea of liking it or not, I ate the entire side of it. I had some awesome Curry Chicken dish and my friend had the shaved ice for dessert, which was a decadent explosion of sweetened condensed milk, sculpted shaved ice and flavorings. The portions are generous and the wait staff was a great balance of helpfulness when you needed it and privacy to enjoy your eating companion. Let's hope the standards I saw continue to stay steady or improve over the course of time. read more

The service is friendly but slow on taking care on customers. We receive our food but not drinks, hardy check on us for refilled on drinks. The noodles taste too oily with too much sesame oil favoring. The dessert wasn't as expected, had high hopes for the nitrogen cereal. I'll try other dishes another time. read more

Went here for lunch today with my mother. I am always sceptical about eating out because I am a chef and I am always disappointed... I was definitely not disappointed today!! The service was wonderful but the Hawaiian food was even better!!! I will definitely be back very very soon.seriously felt like I was in Hawaii again eating dinner on the beach. It is a beautiful restaurant! Not what I expected in downtown FG. We got the chicken katsu, kalbi plates, and a shoyu ahi poke bowl. Everything was amazing with the exception of the kalbi meat being burnt black. I loved the mac salad, it was perfect. The hostess was very friendly and the bar tender (who we ordered our to go food from) was extremely helpful. We will be back and I hope the kalbi meat won't be burnt crisp. read more

Bummed about our experience because we really loved the prior restaurant at this location, and loved that the new owner kept the look and feel. Food was just ok. Server brought the wrong wine, then charged us for the wrong glass which was $4.50 more. Not a huge deal, but then never offered dessert. Seemed like he couldn't wait to turn over the table, but they weren't even busy. We probably won't be back. read more

We love having a nice local place to go to. The poke is fresh, and the chicken katsu is the best in Portland. We've come with large and small groups and have gotten great service every time. I'm excited to try everything on the menu, nothing has disappointed me yet. They even customize for my picky kids. read more

We had a family event in the banquet room and had pre-ordered a buffet style dinner for 30. The coconut shrimp was a big hit but the rest was delicious as well. We did the pulled pork, yakisoba noodles, chicken, potstickers, rice, a beautiful salad and a fruit platter. I highly recommend ordering any of those off the menu. When visiting the mainland from Oahu the last thing I want to eat is a local plate lunch. So I wasn't excited when my son said they were meeting friends here. But I was impressed! I ordered the Aina Pack to share with my son who loves Spam. A fellow diner commented on how the kitchen "made spam look good" and my son gobbled it up! The kalbi, Korean chicken and mahi mahi on my plate were very good. My husband ate the kalbi and mac salad and said both were unexpectedly good. The grilled mahi mahi wasn't fishy at all and was much better than breaded and fried mahi I see mostly. The Korean chicken was also lighter than I find most places with just the right amount of breading and not greasy. My husband ordered the Warrior Pack. I ate the salad from his plate which had the right yummy dressing to salad ratio. The kalua pig was also delicious, not too dry and the perfect amount of salt and fat. The least impressive item we ordered was a mini saimin, you could tell the noodles weren't fresh and the broth was a bit too salty. Service was friendly and prompt. Overall it was a very good meal. If I'm ever in Forest Grove, I will make a point to have a meal here. Maybe even save room for dessert. read more

Mediocre food. I would say Roxy's is better by far. My husband and I got to go orders of the chicken teriyaki and every piece was full of fat and many pieces of chicken were undercooked. Big problem! I will probably not return here. They haven't officially opened yet and I'm hoping they have time to perfect the food- especially undercooking meat! read more

I found a little bit of Hawaii in Forst Grove. Great service, ono food, Kona Longboard on tap, and awesome Hawaiian music in the background. I ordered the "Big one" and wow, that was enough food for 3 meals for me. Kalua pug was juicy and flavorful, the haupia was creamy and delicious. Squid luau was just like back home. I'm writing this review based on my two visits that was back to back. My friend and I saw pictures of the shave ice and dragon breath all over instagram and we decided to give it a try. We came in a Sunday evening and the restaurant was moderately empty, so we were sat down pretty quick. Our waiter was very annoyed with the fact we were indecisive about our order. The shave ice came out fast, but the time after we finished our shave ice to when we got our dragons breath was very long. The second time I came back was the following day, and I went with my boyfriend during lunch hour and the restaurant was also empty around this time. Our waitress was also not in a happy mood, and when our food came out, she slammed our plate on the table, did not say anything, and just left. We could obviously see that our waiter/waitress was happy and friendly to older customers, but when they came to us, they were annoyed. The food was really really good. But I would never ever dine in again. Rather get a to go and eat at home. read more
