Have heard people raving about Kamaaina's garlic french fries, so together with my wife, we decided to try. It's OK, but you could get better quality if you buy frozen fries at Trader Joe's then putting it in the oven. I also tried their Saimin (Hawaiian noodle soup) which would remind me of our days in Ala Moana (Honolulu) several decades ago. Now that's very, very disappointing. The noodle and broth are way too salty to the point that I decided not to finish it even though I was quite hungry. The roasted pork that should have come with the saimin was "missing in action" so I had to ask the friendly waitress for it. All in all, a disappointing experience. read more

Before coming here, I had only eaten Hawaiian food at fast-casual places or in friends' homes, so this was something new and fun for me. I'm rarely anywhere near Forest Grove, so I wanted to try as much as I could. I ordered the 'Aina pack and enjoyed everything I had, the short ribs probably being my favorite. My husband had the Kalua/LauLau combo, so we got to try a pretty big variety between the two of us. We also shared some HI Snow for dessert (again, insatiable need to try everything) which was surprisingly light and refreshing. I'm from Oahu and lived my childhood there till 1997. Visited Kama'aina last night with my gf's family. My gf and her cousin ordered the Kahuku garlic shrimp. Sorry to say but the shrimp was so small. If you going to say "Kahuku" garlic shrimp then this shrimp was not a size like I had back in the islands. Could've at least been jumbo shrimp even if you had 5 or 6 on the plate. But baby shrimps!!! Com'on!! I had the poki bowl. Are you serious!! For the price was paid that portion was too small. I know that this is a new Hawaiian comfort food but your bizz need to start with a bang!! For what I saw last nights dinner on our table was a big failure. The chix katsu was dark brown and too dry like it was over cooked. Doesn't even looked close to L&L's golden brown katsu. My husband and I dined at Kama'aina last night for the first time and we loved it! Love the Hawaiian atmosphere and the fun music. The staff is extremely friendly, attentive and so helpful navigating the menu. We ordered an appetizer to start, dumplings (nice sauce). My husband ordered the chicken teriyaki, it was a huge portion that he quickly devoured . I gave the chicken a try and it was delicious! I ordered the seared tuna salad, again a huge portion. I loved the Japanese inspired dressing and the tuna was prepared perfectly. It was too much for me to eat so I passed it along to my husband and he loved it too! Now for the dessert...it was AMAZING! We ordered the Coffee and Caramel Hi Snow...to die for! I will be thinking about until I am able to return and have it again. First time at this restaurant and the staff was very inviting we were promptly seated and attended to by a very gracious server who recommended the wings off the appetizer menu and they were great just enough heat and cooked perfect then we had a grilled chicken salad and the combo ribs and chicken both were very tasty and we topped it off with there strawberry cheesecake hi snow which was very good overall a very pleasant experience and I will be returning read more

For $51 we had an awesome dinner, that left us with plenty of leftovers. We arrived at a little after 6 pm on a Saturday nite....every table was full, but the bar was temporarily vacant, so we decided to eat there. I ordered the $16 Aina Pack (I asked our super bar tender if I could sub something for the Spam...which he did in a flash!).The Aina Pack was a generous amount of four tasty selections, on a bed of rice, and a small side of Mac salad. The Boss ordered the $8 special of the nite: "Pele's Prize"; which was their furikake fries smothered in cheese, covered with a type of salsa, and topped with a scoop of Kalua pork? So filling and so good! ( I had to eat some of that too!!) I had three beers ($3 each), and the Boss has a couple of glasses of wine ($5, $6). After dinner we were shown the desert menu; and we just had to split the $7 Coffee Slated Caramel Hi Snow. I have no idea how we managed to get up from our bar stools; we were so stuffed. Kama'aina was a great experience! Everyone was so sincerely friendly. Our waiter, Chase, was so helpful in explaining the terms we'd never heard before and assured us we were in for a great experience. He was 100% right! The Fried Mandu (pork dumplings) was superb, the Citrus Shoyu dipping sauce, meh (just my opinion). Saimin, a traditional Hawaiian chicken soup was so deeply yummy, but the star was Rocky's Korean Chicken, perfect flavor, perfect crunch, perfect tenderness. We didn't try the HI Snow because we didn't understand that it was "shaved ice cream", definitely trying that next time. All in all a great dining experience. Authentic Hawaiian food with a little more class than your standard Hawaiian place. Full bar with very tasty cocktails that have a good serving of alcohol. I love eating here! I go with my best friend often. We usually order the Furekake fries, which are always a heavenly treat after a long week of classes. I also am in love with the Manapua because they are so similar to the asian BBQ pork buns I always had growing up. I don't really like eating main dishes here mainly cause I can't finish them ever. I had dinner with some friends during the soft opening. Atmosphere is great, prices are reasonable, portions are large, and the food is incredible. I tried the coconut shrimp, and smoke meat for appetizers, they were both amazing! My entree was the Katsu chicken curry. I am not an eloquent food critic but my tastebuds were dancing. Well, let me start off by saying I'm from O'ahu (born and raised) so I know local kine plate lunch food. Kama'ainas rocked it! Had the incredible fries, edamame, kal-bi, and salads made me feel like I was at home! In my opinion, one of the best if not the best Hawaiian joint in Oregon. Everything here is to die for. I definitely recommend the smoke meat and the spicy veggie stir fry. And that's just the appetizers and entrees. The Snowboxes are a heavenly combo or classic Hawaii shave ice and ice cream. My two favorites are the Li-Hing Mango and the Coffee Salted Caramel. I used to love this place. I waited with a friend at the front door at dinnertime yesterday for about 20 minutes and no one said anything or sat us at a table. Went here for the soft opening and the food was amazing. My wife used them a few days later for a large lunch order for a buisness meeting (15 people) and they had everything ready when she showed up to pick up the order. Pork katsu is awesome. Just like being back home in Hawaii. This place is amazing!! The flavors are spot on and the portions are just right. I ordered the Hawaiian plate which comes with kalua pork, lomi salmon, chicken long rice, lau lau, squid luau, and a slice of haupia. OH MY GOD! It was so good! Definitely as authentically Hawaiian as you can get. The garlic fries are also delicious. And to top it off, we got some Mango HI snow for dessert and it was exceptional! It bursted with flavor and freshness. Wasn't heavy at all. Didn't talk much throughout the meal, which is a good sign because I didn't want to stop eating. Great location and people. It was very warm and inviting. Oxtail soup is the real deal. Prices were high and portions were small. Either lower your prices and leave the portions where it's at or leave prices but be more generous on portions. Salmon bites were overcooked. Katsu was good just wish had more to balance the 2 scoop rice and mac salad. Went on a Friday and was extremely busy, which I was very glad to see. Hoping the full menu has more dinner type entrees as what me and my husband had, although delicious was more like what I would want for lunch(to pricey for lunch tho). My husband probably could've used only one scope of rice, more Korean style chicken and more of what he loved,the cabbage salad underneath it all.I had the Teriyaki chicken(not as good as husbands chicken) and would say it was no better than what you get at Roxy's only in a fancy setting.Absent the Farmer on a tractor, still 1910 inside which is a beautiful place to eat.I would recommend getting an appetizer as you won't get full off just chicken & rice. Kristy, our sever was amazing and the best part of the experience. I wish them lots of luck as I hope they can survive once the college kids go home. We'll definitely have to go back and try after grand opening. And really, for the price, our total was less than $30.00, you can't not try it. Please add regular ice tea to your menu once you get the bar up and running, $2.00 per can for tea is a bit steep (pun intended) read more

This restaurant is new so I will revisit in a year and see if it has improved, the first year is rough! Food was good, not amazing but I am comparing to Mixed plate in Lahina, HI. I ordered the spicy chili shrimp it tool about 45 min to come out, and only received one napkin (not enough) as it is eaten with your fingers. I asked for more but did not receive them. Our server was NOT GOOD, he was very nice but had not been trained properly on how to serve. He was visiting with his tables more that serving. We waited over 30 min for our check, finally had to get up and walk over to him and ask AGAIN. It was a bit strange. I am sure this is just first year wrinkles and look forward to adding more stars next year! read more

I was reading Sean A.'s review as we drove by, and I liked his enthusiasm and honesty, so we decided what the heck why wait till the opening--try them now while they're still listening. To me, the first test of an authentic Hawaiian food place is the kalua pig, rice and mac salad. The next test is anything iconically local--like lau lau and poke or in this rare instance oxtail soup. They were out of laulau so I went with the oxtail soup, and my spouse ordered the kalua pig plate. The soup was terrific. It had a rich, savory broth with shiitakes and star anise and peanuts (could have used more), and the oxtails had been slow cooked to melt-in-your mouth, glutinous perfection. I'm telling you, this was almost better than my Popo's and she was a great cook. Came with rice, Mac salad and fresh ginger. Score 6 stars for the soup--pricey at $16, but worth it. Definitely a home run! The mac salad needed more salt (and pepper), and maybe a little grated carrot and larger macaroni--however, as I write this I'm thinking, no, maybe what it needs is real Best Foods mayonnaise. If this mayo is BF, wouldn't need more salt. But not bad and felt pretty good in the mouth. As for the rice, rice is tricky. My guess is that this rice needs to be soaked before cooking so it turns out more chewy and the grains remain intact--but I'm not an expert in cooking rice; I just know what tastes local, and this tastes more cafeteria. Two for the rice, 3 for the mac. As for the kalua pig, I have to confess that I grew up in a family that prepared big luaus in our backyard. We had the imu, the Hawaiian uncles, and the pig that they picked up from the farm and drove to the slaughter house. Kalua pig is not just pulled pork--it's got smoke that has smells you can't bottle; it's got fat from the all of the pig--the roasted skin, the bone, the gristle. Imu pig is tough to beat. But I've also eaten a lot of Hawaiian plate lunches with kalua pork that's pretty darn good, so I know it's possible to make something close enough to the real stuff. This kalua pig today had pretty good smoke, but it's a little dry. Needs more pan juice and fat, some Hawaiian salt. Prices are a little steep, but instead of lowering, why not just up the portion sizes and keep the mini plates (but define them). Local style needs rich flavor and generosity--the oxtail soup has that, but the kalua plate's not there yet. We will definitely go back because I think there's a really good cook back there with lots of gutsy ka'amaina spirit. Just let it out. Normally I would have like it. But not only was the service bad and lazy it took over 30 min to get our dessert when it was dead and they messed it up 2times. Then we get it finally and want to leave but they don't have lids..I asked for condensed milk twice and finally just said forget it. Also as a consumer if u put your famous shaved ice in a small Tupperware container its really hard to share . its now not easy for anyone to eat unless you pass it around which is tacky ..its no longer shaved ice when u shove it all in a plastic container and it packs together and freezes..that's just normal ice cream. So since your waitress said it saved you guys a dollar you should put that dollar back where it was and invest in more training. Seems like a lot pf people had a lot of time to be doing nothing while we sat off in the private room by ourselves thanks for ruining our birthday celebration.
