My local friend was raving about how good this Indian spot is so I was excited to try. It did not disappoint! Authentic flavors and large portions. We got garlic naan and I had the chicken biryani. It was slightly spicy but I can handle that... if you can't handle medium spicy make sure to mention. First exposure, takeout only. We ordered a variety of items: samosas, lamb vindaloo, chicken tikka masala and vegetable jalfrezi and, heeding previous reviews, chicken noodles. I'm well aware of the Anglo association with chicken tikka masala, but my dinner partner was adamant. I liked the vindaloo a lot. It was spicy and tasty; everything I wanted. The jalfrezi was fine, no complaints. We also ordered naan and poori, both were good. Samosas were a surprise: we ordered 2 but got 3! (Thank you); well seasoned ground lamb in a reasonably sized samosa. Next time I'll try the vegetarian. I anticipate a good bite. Out celebrating kiddos first job in his field of study and what a great place to do so. We have been wanting to try Kamana since it opened and so happy we finally did. A quiet little place on a corner in the center of Branford. Staff we wonderful and provided the perfect amount of time to review the menu and make decisions. I had the chicken curry (medium) and it was wonderful, along with a Rupee beer. Kiddo had the chicken noodle ( spicy) he loved it. It was a quiet atmosphere, easily able to have a nice conversation. I've been to Kamana in Guilford, but this is my first time at their new location in Branford, which recently opened. We went on a weekend. A lot of people were working and all were talkative and helpful. I ordered thali, which wasn't readily on the lunch menu, but they were fine letting me order from the dinner menu. Thali means "plate," and it's a dish that comes with a sampling of roti, vegetables, samosa and meat of your choice (in my case, lamb). While some thali servings can be small, mine was large. Everything was good. I especially liked the ground lamb in the samosa - so flavorful! I ordered shrimp noodles on the side, and they were delicious with a unique flavor I can't quite describe. I would definitely order the noodles again. The portions were so big that we had to take them home. I like this location best and will return one day soon with a very empty stomach so I can finish all my food. read more

This is, hands down, the best Indian food I have ever eaten in my life. Everything was perfect, which says a lot, considering that I was part of a party of 14 older women. Our servers were super attentive and friendly and anticipated our needs. The food was prepared according to each individual's spice tolerance. I ordered Paneer Tikka Masala and asked for it to be very mild. It was phenomenal. I could distinctly taste cinnamon and cardamon. Each table got bowls of rice and Dal, as well as a basket of naan. The Dal was also delicious. Flavorful but not over spiced. There are many Indian restaurants located closer to my home, but I will drive right past them to eat here, any time I want Indian cuisine. The newly renovated Kamana Indian restaurant was definitely worth the wait. Step inside the beautiful place and see gorgeous finishes, including ornate and elegant seating, stylish chandeliers and and perfectly sized bar. Clean, light and bright. Friendly service and attentive staff complimented the delicious food. We started our meal with Aloo Tikki, which was essentially an Indian latke. Delicious flavors, not greasy and also not too thick, this did not need any sauce or additional garnish. We also tried the butter chicken, the sauce was so good. I was just eating it with a spoon after the chicken was gone or seasoning my rice with the gravy. Absolutely delicious and the chicken was extremely tender. We also had Shrimp saag. This lovely dish in a spinach and yogurt gravy was absolutely delicious and not over seasoned. We also tried the garlic non-and I wish I had brought a few packages home with me because it was truly delicious. Since they are reopening, they have coupons for 20% off your next visit, we will definitely be back before the end of March when the coupon expires. I absolutely love the decor!! The chairs are beautiful, it looks much more inviting than when occupied by Darbar, completely classed up. The lighting is warm, welcoming, and elegant as well. The ambiance was fantastic and culturally on par. The new Darbar looks like a dive diner, it's a major turn off, so Kamana is definitely winning in that department. I'm really disappointed with the new Darbar design. It's soooo awful. Kamana's location is so much better too. Right in the heart of downtown Branford. However, my rating boils down to the food. My wife is Indian, I am not, but I have lived in Dhaka, Mumbai, and traveled often to Nepal. I've also had a lot of experiences with British-Indian cuisine. Hopefully, I think I'm qualified to make a good call on authenticity. I'd have to say that Kamana is playing towards people without a palate for Indian fare. Everything seems muted, or subtle, or restrained from it's potential. It doesn't pack a punch. I don't mean spicy or heat, because you can request mild, medium, or hot, I mean that it's missing flavor. I don't feel the richness of cumin, turmeric, fenugreek, cardamom, ginger, coriander, paprika, cinnamon, NOTHING IS POTENT IN THE SPICE DEPARTMENT!!!! Darbar is far more authentic in my experienced opinion. As soon as Kamana landed the papadums and flavorless chutney at our table, I knew we were in for a watered-down, cater-to-Americans, flavorless experience. They were gross and tasted like who cares!! My wife ordered Lamb Boti Kebab and took one bite and gave me a blank stare, like she was barely able to chew it. I asked her what was wrong and she said "Here try it." As she moved a cube on a fork to my mouth, I refused. I didn't want that fork to come another inch closer to me. It smelled like Machine Gun Kelly's armpit after not showering for 4 weeks, jumping into a septic tank, and running the NYC marathon with a dead raccoon duct taped to his armpit. It legit tasted like straight up armpit B.O. There's just no other way to describe it. Armpit B.O. I don't think I'll ever go back while Darbar is the alternative. Although Darbar looks like Mel's Diner from Happy Days, I'm there primarily for the taste, not the ornate chairs and cute chandeliers. I can overcome the diner ambiance for food that taste 1,000 times better, and bottom line, whoever owns this place, opened an Indian restaurant where Darbar once occupied. I really don't like supporting people that do business like that. It's not very kind and it seems very cut throat and ruthless. I'd rather give my money to kind people who have served this town well for decades regardless of their diner-like decor, hey, I'm glad they kept the fish tank. Kamana was a good "one and done" for me. No need to go back. read more
