My wife and I absolutely love the sushi here, however we have had many issues with their service. The servers are often inattentive and we have experienced very long waits when the restaurant was not busy (hour plus from order to getting our rolls). The last poor experience we had was with a table of 5 and all rolls came out at different times. From the 1st roll to the last there was over a 20 minute gap. My grandpa had to sit there and watch everyone else eat and when we were all done his roll came out and we waited for him to eat before we left. read more

Welll here's my review of Kampai Sushi after visiting them several timesI: the food is delicious. Creative and tasty. Also you get a huge sushi roll which is really satisfying. The ONLY reason this restaurant gets ANY stars for me is the food. HOWEVER the service is absolutely terrible. Be prepared to wait no less than 30 minutes to an hour. The waitresses are either inexperienced or just plain rude. They have you seat yourself ( with a careless attitude) take forever to come get any order. Never refill drinks. Or stick around to see if you need anything extra. Our waitress brought our food quickly set it on the table and ran away. Seeing how there is not many tables in the restaurant and there were only two families and a few people at the bar, I see no excuse for such piss poor service. The other waitress could've just stayed home since we say her briefly twice, and as we were leaving I noticed her eating standing up in the kitchen, the busboy appeared to be stoned or something. This used to be my favorite Sushi in town. The last four times I've eaten there the sushi gets worse. Last night I ordered $60 of take out and the only thing edible was the Miso. My family and I are new to the area, and we often go out for family dinners. Our favorite is sushi. Unfortunately, This was THE worst sushi experience we have ever had. The service was HORRIBLE. The food was mediocre. When the waitress brought the miso soup and salad, her finger was in my soup as she placed it in front of me. When I asked her for a new one, I was completely ignored. I ordered the "combination plate" for $20! I ordered the teriyaki chicken and California rolls as my two choices. The rolls were mostly rice and tons of cucumber and the chicken was very rubbery and cold. The waitress was an older lady and she was just mean. I took my family, and after my husband and I were served, my children had to wait another 10 minutes before their California rolls were served. We will never be back. Worst $100 I've ever spent. Sushi detour! We were headed back to Mt. Shasta from Sacramento last night and the last thing I wanted to do was cook dinner when we got home. Sushi sounded like a good plan so we got off I-5 and headed to Kampai. I was pretty much starving so I ordered sushi like a madwoman. Two Melissa rolls, Rainbow roll, Spider roll, French Salmon, French Tuna, Maguro , Hamachi, miso soup, and two bottles of sake. Yes I shared, although I probably could have eaten all of it! The new owners are doing a great job! Everthing was fresh and tasty except for the sauce on the French Salmon and French Tuna was a little thick. The Spider roll was delicious but it fell apart easily when trying to eat it. Other than that Kampai will probably always be my favorite sushi spot in Redding. read more

The best sushi that Redding has to offer. Kampai has been in business forever, and their food is awesome. Husband and wife team, making consistently good, fresh food. Also the service is top-notch... Randy and his wife are really friendly and the waitresses have a tendency to stay on for years, ensuring that pretty much everyone knows you, even if you (like me, living so far away) can only manage to get here a couple times a year This is the place that started my love for sushi, and it's still on my list of "must go to" restaurants when I visit family in Redding. Especially good (though not very authentic) are their chicken rolls, but they've got killer udon and unagi too. They also serve Ramune and UCC canned coffee, for those hot redding days where hot tea just would be cruel. read more

I am a local that lives just 5 minutes from Kampai Sushi plus a regular at Kampai for parties, events, and so on, and until tonight, it use to be my favorite sushi place in Redding. Besides the horrible service tonight and waiting forever for 3 expensive rolls to finally make there way to our table(which we have had many times before), the sushi was disgusting. (Got there at 5:13pm and did not get our food till past 6pm). The sushi rolls also came one at a time. Sadly the sushi rolls were warm which made the taste awful. If I was not so hungry we would not have ate them , and sent them back (probably would have been worst if we were not so hungry). Which now I regret because we feel awful after. We told our waitress, I will save the embarrassment and not mention her name, that the rolls tasted bad with the rice being warm. The rolls tasted real fishy and gross. All we get is a so sorry from our waitress and that they probably did not wait long enough to cool the rice. We told her we are regulars but apparently that does not mean anything here. She never even refilled my water in the hour time we were there so what could I expect. This actually upset me and my party so I have created a yelp account just to explain my disappointment, and I have never done this in the past. This will be the last time Kampai will ever get our business and it is too bad because I always bring guest from out of town and have big parties there. I just had Kobe for the first time and this will now be our new spot. Sorry Sam (the owner), you should respect all your customers and also make sure the sushi is right every time. Very good, very fresh, pretty imaginative, VERY SMALL. Had never been here and had a very nice sushi dinner, and the price was quite reasonable. Four diners, two salads, lots of sushi and tempura, two large sakes, and only $80. Well worth it and I'd definately return. read more

I am only visiting Redding, so I can't say if it's the best sushi in town, but it was a great place with delicious food and most importantly fresh fish! The seating was limited for the number of customers showing up to eat at this sushi bar. They have expanded the restaurant once already to accomadate the popularity of their food. Service was a bit slow at first but then each dish came as we finished the last entree. The rolls were generous and well made with good visual appeal. The sauses on the sushi plates were unique for each roll so Individual flavors were distinguishable but also blended well together making my meal very enjoyable. The miso. We just got back from eating dinner at Kampai Sushi. We have been going there for years as we are locals. Tonight the owner was not there. We had salmon, hamachi and maguro sashimi. I also had an order of saba or mackerel. When we got all the orders of sashimi, they were so thin I thought that all I was eating was the smell. This place is awesome, but tonight we may have to rethink eating there. The amount we got was about as small as you could get and still get something to eat. Normally what you get is one piece that was as thick as two of the pieces we got tonight. Love this place, but tonight the servings were pretty thin. Maybe when the owner is there the serving sizes will be a little bit more generous. Still giving Kampai Sushi 5 stars, not for the serving sizes, but for the quality of the food. read more

Hope this place can keep up the work of the original owners. I've been a HUGE fan of Kampai for years now and ever since it's switched hands, it's been questionable. They were known for their tuna poke but now it's not as good and I've gotten pretty sick the last few times I've eaten it. Hopefully they will go back to serving the long lived recipe that the original owners had and not put the tuna on a mini salad. They give you less tuna now... Please keep the tradition of Kampai alive and strong and get back to the service and quality of food it was last year. I hate to see the best sushi place around go downhill because of cutting corners. Kampai is up there for one of my favorite places in Redding for sushi! I went there last night and had the Volcano Roll. It was really fresh and tasty. The wasabi was hot like I like it (Not like that fake stuff some places push). I also liked the ginger, it was fresh and authentic (if there is such a thing). Honestly one of the worst experiences I've had at a restaurant. The menu has 200+ items and is just plain confusing. Seemed as though there was only one waitress(who I actually felt bad for) and she didn't seemed a bit lost. It wasn't super busy and still waited an hour plus for food. Only got one soup out in that time and a plate of sushi( 4 pieces total) that was mediocre at best. Rice was too hot which warmed up the fish on top. Will not come back again. I read a few Yelp reviews and truly thought this place must be pretty good. So we decided to go. We entered the restaurant, and were told we could sit wherever we like. We looked over the menus for a few minutes and then decided to place an order when the server brought us drinks. We ordered three rolls to start (I specifically said that), and it took 45 minutes to get the rolls, without a single check-in from our server. There was a group of five girls next to us that, a couple times were talking about the "terrible service" which made me aware I wasn't the only patron feeling neglected. The food was not anything phenomenal. Very heavily covered in sauce. I do feel it was better than glorified Costco sushi, but nothing compared to Gen Kai or Japanese Blossom in Chico. We had wanted to start with these rolls, but the server didn't even come to check on us! We nearly finished the rolls, I stopped eating so she might see that we needed something, but no. We had to flag her down after over 20 minutes. I asked how long it would take if we ordered more, as we had been here already over an hour. She responded with "I would have to check, and your rolls took longer because of the large party next to you." So I told her no thank you. And... since when in the restaurant industry is 5 a 'large party??' I know some places won't even take reservations unless you have eight or more!! I was so annoyed with the service. I assume it was the owner who got wind we were feeling annoyed, and he brought us over complimentary mochi ice cream. It was nice to be given some kind of something for our poor experience, and we were thankful, but the quality of service here couldn't be fixed by two balls of gelatin covered ice cream with a tiny umbrella stuck into one. Though I do love me a tiny umbrella. Overall, food was 3 star, not great but not terrible, but the service was 1 star. Some of the worst service I've ever had in any restaurant. This is now my favorite sushi restaurant in town. I have only tried their Chirashi Don, but it was excellent - better than I have found in several years - even in Sacramento. This place has the absolute worst customer service that I have ever had in Redding. For starters I called and ordered my food and they said it would be 15-20 minutes, I gave them 25 because I know sometimes it takes a little longer. There were only two parties in eating one was wrapping up to leave and the other was the owners family. I got in there 25 minutes after ordering and they still had not started my food!! I then had to wait 30 more minutes while they took their sweet ass time and were extremely rude. Then when I got home I didn't have all of the food we ordered. When I called back they were rude again and refused to let me speak to a manager.
