Excellent rolls!! Highly recommend! Sit on the bar and watch them made. Fresh ingredients, delicious food, tons of options. Always plenty of seating. Expanded dining area. Nice quiet comfortable atmosphere. (No harsh lights or loud music) We used to frequent this place often when we lived up here, we are sushi lovers, try all the places we can. 8yrs later and we're back, it's even better than we remember. The poorest service and " Japanese" food we ever had. No booster for the 4yr old was offered, had to find it our selves. Beer I ordered never received, yet it was on the bill, had to ask for napkins, out of iced tea. We were the only patrons in the restaurant at six pm, it wasn't like it was busy. The worst prepared Japanese food ive ever had, the meat ( chicken and beef) looked and tasted like it was just boiled in water then drenched in what seemed like some off the shelf teriyaki sauce . No flavor in our tempura vegetables and shrimp. The Saba (Mackerel)nigiri sushi looked and tasted like i don't know what.The-plain salad and dressing was the only item with some good flavor although it was just lettuce and dressing. For Redding, I would say this is a pretty good sushi place. It's not the same as the bay area, but it's pretty good, overall. I ordered the nigiri sampler and another roll. The fish tastes fresh, but did not have that hearty fish taste I'm looking for in my sushi. But it still tasted pretty good, overall! I was unable to finish my food as it is pretty large portions. The staff is great and pretty friendly. The owner asked if I like spicy food and I replied that I did and he made this delicious sauce that I took home to dip my chips in...he said it's for sushi, but tasted more like a chip dip lol. read more

WHY DO I KEEP TRYING? Ordered a KELLY roll a SAM roll and a LOCO roll ... what did I receive? A "Cali" roll a " Cam" roll and, shockingly the Loco roll. I am SO OVER Kampai. I keep trying and keep going back even though I say I won't and I just do not learn. What I did receive, even though it was incorrect, was awful - once I realized it was incorrect and tried a bite it went into the trash. 5* to DoorDash for the amazing delivery and a REFUND for the two orders I did not get, I'd give zero stars to Kampai if I could. It was a long drive from the Redwoods on the coast and we were getting hungry. I was doing a yelp search with the spotty data coverage in the mountains with dropouts every 2 minutes, but was able to find Kampai and we rushed to get there before closing. I'm really glad we did because a lot of restaurants in the area close early, like 8. Too used to NYC places opening until 10 or 11. There are a lot of mixed reviews, but mostly positive, so we gave it a go. The sushi was inspiring with a lot of original creations that they dubbed fusion rolls marrying Asian styles & tastes and mixed some great flavors. Some of the sauces didn't go well together though. The fresh fish were sliced into some generous portions I haven't seen in a long time. My wife could hardly finish her sashimi platter despite not having any of the included bowl of rice (which translates to "more for me"). I had the sushi & fried oyster combo which was more than alright. Whenever you say oysters, I am so there. I have to say that the white tuna was as smooth as silk in my mouth. Mmm! Everything you see in my photos? 1 meal, 4 people, all gone. A little on the pricey side but you do get a lot of food. Don't know when we'll be coming back this way again, but I hope Kampai will be there when we do with some great sushi! read more

I've been here a few times when I've been back in Redding to visit my parents. The inside isn't very big but adorably decorated with a cozy atmosphere. I've always been seated quickly and the servers have all been very pleasant. They have gluten free soy sauce and the rolls I've had have always been fresh and excellent. My dad isn't a sushi fan but he really enjoyed the mixed tempura last time he came with me. Price is super affordable as well. FABULOUS lunch yesterday! My husband ordered the daily special, Soft-shell Crab Roll - it was an absolutely gorgeous work of art, and tasted as good as it looked. I ordered the Panko Calamari Bento Box lunch. Not only was it outstanding, it was a bargain at $10.95. It included 8 pieces of calamari, 3 Gyoza, 1-piece shrimp with vegetable tempura, rice, 2 dipping sauces, Miso soup and green salad. Quantities of both dishes sent us home with leftovers. We will definitely be coming back again. Wide variety of dishes on the menu (NOT just sushi). We used to come here when visiting my parents - it was just 5 tables and the bar. It has now expanded into what used to be the frozen yogurt place next door, and the food is better than we remembered. (New chef-owner since we were last in about 5 years ago.) Just wish we lived closer (45 miles away). However, this will be a MUST DO place for us on our periodic trips to Redding. read more

However, the last few times I've gotten any sushi with tempura crab in it like the Sam fusion rolls, the crab has been over cooked and hard like cap'n crunch cereal. The sushi rolls with shrimp are still good. Anyway, since the last time I went here a couple of days ago, the owner has been in the news for something unforgivable if true. Of course everyone is innocent until proven guilty, but I will likely not be returning to Kampai. read more

This used to be one of my favorite restaurants--only thing we'd ever order was the Monkey Roll because it was so yummy. We'd eat there once a week if not twice a week. I don't know what happened, but today's meal was awful. Even more disappointing was the staff's response when we brought the concerns to their attention. The Monkey Roll tasted off. In part, there was no jalapeño in it--just cream cheese, avocado and tempura shrimp. They told us they never put in jalapeño. Just jalapeño paste. Not true. Besides that, the roll tasted off. Like there was crunchy uncooked rice or like the roll was rolled in panko before put in tempura and in the fryer. We were told nope--nothing new. We made it and cooked it exactly the same as always. They didn't offer to new ones, just gave us a 10% discount. We didn't finish and left. We won't return in part due to the quality of the food and in larger part today's customer service. read more

We frequently notice this "Little Gem" as we exit the Raley's Shopping Center but always have groceries to get home with .. This time, I stopped in! First, I noticed very clean, nicely decorated & well-lit ambiance. Next, I was promptly and nicely welcomed. Not having a "take out" menu, I was offered a regular menu to view and assisted in my choices by Sam, the Owner (I assume by the way he seemed in charge). He was extremely pleasant to talk to and excellent in helping me choose my take out order, based on my preferences. WoW!! Perfect choices! He was also kind enough to offer 1/2 of 2 different choices on the menu :) I went with the Crazy Roll (which is deep fried) and the Num Roll. He also let me sample some of their fresh made hotter sauces (since I mentioned I really like spicy/hot). The sauces were delicious! But, I must say that the Rolls we chose were so deliciously packed with a variety of fresh seafood/fish flavors & awesome sauce/toppings, I used very little of the Fresh Made sauce he sent home with me. It won't be wasted though .. Too delicious & fresh to waste. I'm sure I can use it in other ways :)) I will definitely be back for more .. and to try other suggestions from Sam!! 8/19 - Came back for lunch with my Hubby to celebrate our anniversary and actually eat here rather than take-out. I ordered 1/2 Num Roll and 1/2 Dragon Roll with the House Salad. My Hubby asked Sam (the Owner) if they could make him a Chicken Chow Mein dish since he doesn't like Sushi. Ha! He ate some of MY Sushi and really enjoyed it I tasted his Chow Mein dish as well and we both agree it's the best we've ever eaten .. and we've eaten a lot of Chow Mein in several cities in CA! Loved the Peanut Salad Dressing on my salad and both Sushi Rolls were absolutely delicious! Washed down with a little Saki and .. WOW .. The perfect anniversary meal! We even had some to take home. I came here two days in a row! I am a happy camper! I am a big fan of bento box lunches and chirashi sushi, and this place has both, even another old favorite, Oyaku don. It's so great to have a place in Redding to get my Japanese food fix and an affordable price. First time I came here i ordered the Chirashi Sushi off the dinner menu (served all day) for around $12.50 and it was pretty good for the price. It had salmon, octopus, mackerel, snapper ( I think), egg, unagi, tuna and some seaweed vegetable. Between the fish and the sushi rice was what i think is shaved bonito flakes or something, kinda tasty. Overall, it wasn't the best Chirashi sushi I've had, but decent for the value, and tasted pretty fresh. Came with soup and salad. My friend got a tempura asparagus roll that she was happy with. I came here the very next day and ordered a Bento box off their wipe board specials. You can choose from 6 or 7 choices (teriyaki chicken or beef, panko chicken, california roll, and more) to go with 3 gyoza's, 5 pieces of tempura (veggies and 1 shrimp), rice, miso soup, and salad, all for $6.95. This is such a great deal! It was all really tasty, and I'll be back again, probably once a week to get my Japanese food fix in Redding! read more

I would really love to keep supporting this place but it keeps getting worse each time I go. The hamachi was terrible, it didn't look or taste like hamachi. The salmon nigiri was sliced paper thin. My roll was sloppy looking, part of it wasn't even coated in rice, the sushi rice doesn't taste very good or fresh, and even the green onions were turning brown. Disappointing. read more

Having tried rest of sushi offerings in the greater Redding area, it was time to have the wilds of Kampai. Large floorplan, friendly waitress. Great tea (worthy of a star). The tempura was poorly executed. Too thick batter cooked at too low temperature leads to a mushy, tasteless experience. Tako Special: sounds good on paper... reality was spongy, low end slice of Tako. Literally shouldn't exist, as it's just Tako nigiri with mushy canned jalapeño on top. Tuna poke: chilled grilled onion and garlic on bed of small cut poke. Drown in sweet sauce. Salmon roll: meh. Death roll: looks good. Then... when you grab the non-aligned poke atop the roll, covering seaweed salad, you destroy the roll. The poke was ok. The panko shrimp in roll was ok. Overall, pedestrian and overpriced. The seaweed salad was ungainly, and close to bad. Not "I don't taste good"... but rather, "I should be thrown out." read more
