We had such an amazing experience at Bonsai Sushi in Redding! We went there on Thursday to celebrate my husband's birthday and ordered the 4 specials. everything was absolutely delicious and beautifully presented. The staff went above and beyond to make the night special. They surprised us with complimentary yogurt soju, a taro cake, and even sang happy birthday! The sushi chef and servers were so kind and fun they even came out to share a shot with my husband after singing to him, which made the whole experience feel like we were just celebrating with friends and family. It's rare to find a place that combines great food, warm hospitality, and such a personal touch. We left with full hearts (and stomachs!). The two sushi rolls we ordered were delicious. The dinner Bento boxes had combinations of teriyaki chicken, veggie and shrimp tempura. The dinner bento boxes were good. The tuna sashimi was frozen, not fresh. The sashimi was not firm, it was soft (frozen). But I still enjoyed having sashimi. This time Yelp reviews were way wrong. We were visiting our son and DIL and wanted to treat them to a good sushi dinner. My son said, "mom, this is Redding, not the Central Coast". So I went to Yelp and read reviews for every sushi restaurant in the area. Bonsai Sushi seemed like the place to go according to the reviews. Boy was I wrong!! Service was awful. We had to practically tackle our server every time she walked by because she zoomed past so quickly. We were missing chopsticks, forks, napkins, straws, water, menus. Every time she stopped though, she'd only stay long enough for us to ask for one of the missing items. I ordered Nigiri sake. She handed me the bottle then left. When she zoomed past again, I asked for a glass to drink it from. She came back with a beer stein. Really? Now about the food. All but two of their special rolls have cream cheese in them. Their miso tasted like it came from a packet. The rice was not tender. My husband's Bento looked and tasted like a microwaved TV dinner. The tempura shrimp within the rolls were just about burnt. All of our dinners were practically inedible. We choked what we could down and left the rest. For service and food, I do not recommend this restaurant. read more

Disappointed to be leaving this review, legitimately considered one star, but after my last three visits I'm BARELY leaving two stars. I sat at the sushi bar all three times. I will not be going back again. First, Lee used to be very friendly to sushi bar guests, this is not the case anymore. He barely looked up, didn't talk - nothing. This was very off putting as that is part of the sushi bar experience. Second, the last three times I have been in I can smell the oil and it does not smell fresh, it smells old - like old old and does not smell good. Third, my server {male} had an absolutely massive hickey on his neck he seemed really proud of showing off. This was the 2nd time he's been my server I've seen him like this. Good for him, but it's really gross and not something I want to look at while I'm eating. Fourth, the rolls were not good - literally everything is tuna and/or has a jalapeno in it. The creativity has been lost here for some time and what I did get and eat was almost too big to put in my mouth and fell apart it just felt rushed and the quality has gone way down. Fifth, it was uncomfortably warm and has been the last several times I've been in. The carpets need a thorough cleaning. The restaurant overall feels uncomfortable, hot and doesn't smell good. We were passing through Redding and wanted a light dinner that wouldn't sit heavy for the rest of our drive. We ordered 3 rolls: Spicy Tuna Mudslide Maui Zowie The rolls were OK. The big issue we had was that the two special rolls were soggy with thick, gooey sauces. We did our best to scrape off as much of that gelatinous mess as possible without forfeiting all of the tobiko. The portions were fantastic and flavor blends were great in theory bad but definitely not balanced. We won't be back. There are too many alternatives in Redding to try first. read more
