I love Kampai!!!!! Best sushi in Redding. I am never disappointed. I'm on my way there right now. The last time I went there for dinner and we asked if we could have a roll made with mango, just surprise us with the rest. They came out with one of the best rolls I have ever had! I've had better service at McDonald's. The staff was Not attentive at all. The server is pretty stupid. I mean who would ask "would you like a spoon and a fork for your soup and salad..?" I was pleasantly surprised with this place. One of the best parts is the atmosphere. It's so clean and new looking. The booths are really nice. The food was so so good! We got 4 rolls of sushi. The catapillar, the volcano, the French eel, and the alligator. I've had a LOT of sushi in my lifetime and the alligator roll was one of my favorites I've ever had. Great flavor and texture. Good sushi, but we also ordered a number 1 which was $8.90 for teriyaki chicken with rice. It is only chicken and rice and the chicken was so overdone and dry and flavorless it was not edible. Our sushi was good so we weren't super worried about it, until I told one of the waitresses and she answered with a "so what" attitude. I asked her to please ask her manager what to do and she came back saying that she called him and he said too bad, that's what chicken breast tasted like. We had no choice but to pay 9 dollars for the small portion of rice we ate. Our main waitress (not the one who called the manager) was very sweet and apologetic. Went here a couple of months ago. I can't emphasize enough the food and service were terrible. I asked the server what a particular dish consisted of. She didn't know didn't care to find out. We ordered two bento boxes. Mine was chicken teriyaki and tempura. The chicken was rubbery with some kind of terrible sauce on it. Didn't even eat it. The tempura was greasy and unappetizing. Salad was bagged lettuce. It was extremely disappointing to spend that much money and not be able to eat. Wait staff is rude and not helpful. They act like they wish you would go away. Food was horrible. With all of the bad reviews one would think the owners would get it together. Won't be back too many other places to choose from. read more

a small little restaurant which fills up really quickly. we arrived just when they opened at 5pm, and by the time we'd left they were full! wasn't mind-blowing japanese food (but then again i'm from SE Asia where good food abounds), but the sukiyaki was pretty good. wouldn't particularly recommend the beef teriyaki but the rolls weren't half bad. the alligator roll was made of smoked salmon (which really should be fresh salmon), and the salmon skin should really have been deep fried. have definitely tasted better sushi/jap food in san francisco, but i suppose this is as good as it gets in Redding :) ps. they're closed sundays and mondays, and operate like between 5-8.30pm on other days. do these guys work at all??!!! read more

3 stars for the great sushi made. You cant get goos sushi any other place in Redding, Ca like you do here. They have a different range and type of sushi my husband and I love. Its small and quiet but that is nice. The last time we went, one of the sushi chefs was staring at my husband the entire time! It made him feel very uncomfortable and we had to leave early because it was hard to concentrate on our food. Our waitress was nice but didnt talk very much. The owner was in, and he seemed happy serving the people at the bar. This place needs to up the customer service. read more

The ratings here are totally misleading! Whoever gave this place 4-5 stars must never had real sushi before! The rice on there rolls here are so DISGUSTING!!! It taste mushy and sweet, like Costco refrigerated sushi. The sashimi was ok but on the warmer side. Although they have a large variety of different unique rolls, I'm probably not going to return because the rice they make ruined the whole sushi. I'm probably not going to find any good sushi places around here and I'm mostly not going to fulfill my sushi cravings here. It would also help if the waitresses here smile a little! If the food's not good, at least smile as if you want the tip! I'm also a little confused. I never been to a Japanese restaurant and had to be charged for "tobiko" on my rolls, wasabi, and ginger. Good sushi considering it's in redding. Great selection here...good mix of traditional choices and neo sushi type of rolls. The fish is fresh and they are not shady with their portions! I can usually eat 3-4 eight-piece rolls. But I was pretty full here after just 2...and it's not because it's overloaded with rice. It's because there was so much fish on it. Love it! It was Valentine's which was extremely busy and should be expected by me and certainly by the owner of the restaurant. My rating is 3 stars though I would have to write the experience as probably 1 to 2 stars and the food is 4 to 5 stars. We were there two hours and 10 minutes. When we arrived there was one table at the front door. If you took that table everyone would rub their ass on you while coming in and out. After only 3-4 minutes we got a seat at the bar with water and menus immediate. In the first few minutes we noticed that most of the people at their tables had no food in front of them and very frustrated looks on their faces. While the Three Chefs working behind the bar seemed to be happy and smiling and working diligently the rest of the wait staff and other staff seemed frantic and rushing around accomplishing little. There seem to be a lot of confusion about who was waiting on what table and what food went to what table and people yelling out can you check on this can you get me a beer can we didn't get this we didn't get that. After about 10 minutes of waiting I finally snagged a waitress going by to order beer. We ordered two IPA's from the menu and after two three minutes we were informed that they were out of IPA and that we would have to select something else. We ordered 2 Sierra Nevada Pale ales which were also on their menu after two to three minutes we were told that they were out and we would have to select something else. We decided to step down a few notches and go more mainstream and ordered two Coronas from the menu of which after two to three minutes we were informed that they were out and would need to select something else. At this point I asked the waitress to just tell me what they had in stock and I would just choose from that because there was probably 15 beers on their menu and I didn't have time to go through then 1 by 1!!!!! She named off 4 (four) beers that they had and at this point I offered to run across the street to Raleys and buy them some beer. We ended up drinking Coors light from a bottle with no glasses. What a pisser for people from Central Oregon where amazing beer flows like blood through your veins...Lol! Oh well..... It was Valentine's day and we had beer after only 20ish minutes and I was bound to have a great time in this strange atmosphere. After another 15 minutes and our beers were pretty much gone I finally asked the sushi chef how we go about ordering and he yelled at one of the waitresses to come take our order. We placed our order and got another yummy Coors Light. Over the next hour we watched yummy looking food go back and forth and around to the wrong table and back to the chef then to the right table and listen to many people yell across over our heads that they hadn't received their food and that they hadn't got their bill and that they've been waiting forever. A few people ended up getting up and leaving. A young couple were seated next to us at the bar. Within one minute the girl told the chef... Possibly owner or manager that she wanted to give her order..... He stopped what he was doing and took the order and passed it on to a girl in the back. They had beer and wine and saki within another minute. Hmmmm. Five minutes later.... An hour and 20 into our time here... The chef asked what we ordered. I told him and he checked all of the tickets and then then told the girl she had lost ours and he made out a new one. 5 minutes later we and the fresh new folks beside us got our first dish. I would point out that the other two people at the bar on the other side of us were there and look frustrated when we arrived and at this point they were still asking trying to get their food. Not wanting to be grumpy and ruin a perfectly good Valentine's Day we played the hand that we were dealt and kept in the game. The newest patrons to the place that were beside us on our right actually got their first Sushi Boat before us and the ones that were there before us to our left. Within about a minute we received our first dish along with the people on the left. The rest of the sushi rolls for all three couples came over the next three to four minutes and we finally had all of our food. This is the part where I would get four to five stars on the quality of the sushi. It was fresh well-prepared and Incredibly tasty. Will I come back and try to enjoy it again??? I would say yes for the quality of food but the first thing that I would do would be to stick my head in the door to see if they are busy and get a list of the beers they have in stock LOL. The chef that seemed to be in charge seems like a nice guy and that he genuinely cared about putting out a great product and even the experience of his customers though he and the rest of the team were completely overwhelmed and the experience was not great. read more

My fiance and I went to kampai on a date. I think I was expecting a quiet restaurant more like Sakura Sushi. When we arrived, the restaurant was packed. I took this as a good sign at first. The longer we stayed, the more I began to question why on earth it could be so popular. I can honestly say that the food was great and the decor was cute, but the service was about the equivalent of what one might expect from Taco Bell. The waitresses were surprisingly rude and seemed to have very poor training. They took forever to actually come by and take or order, they set a tiny bottle of room-temperature Thai tea on our table and charged a ridiculous price for it, and they only bought one plate of sushi at a time with incredibly long intervals in between. The music was ridiculous unless you're a huge fan of J-pop and their menus looked atrocious. For the price, you could easily dine elsewhere and enjoy your experience much more. And we had to get our own soda cause no one would come around for 35+min!!!! Ridiculous. And when we simply said we don't want to pay for that roll cause we're done now, the waitress threw the receipt and stomped off . The food was still good but not worth the horrible service. Embarrassing since I invited about 8 people to come since it was my birthday . And have heard everyone else around us complain. I must say that I NEVER write reviews. But I was so dissapointed with this place I felt like I should share. We arrived to the restaurant to be "greeted" by a scowling waitress, who looked to be about 14. Before we even made it through the threshold, past the very dirty aquarium, she barked, "How many?!" ... then when she went to seat us, I politely asked if it would be ok for us to sit in a booth next to the window. This was answered by a roll of the eyes and a sulky, "Ugh, ya." She slapped down the menus and dissapeared. After a while we ordered our food and waited, listening to bad 90s pop music. The food came, it was...eh. We ordered two rolls. One of the rolls came with no Wasabi or ginger, so we shared, however the 4 pieces of ginger only went so far. I tried to get the waitresses attention, and when she walked by, I made eye contact and then did that funky face that toddlers make when they are in need of something. She looked at me and continued on her quest of not helping. When she finally came around again I was able to stop her and ask for some ginger. Finally it came. We ate our food, and asked for our bill. The bill came, we pulled out the debit card, and then we waited. And we waited...several eons passed, I grew a gray hair, the seasons changed, and finally when the waitress came within ear shot I said to her, "Excuse me, we would like leave now.... please." We don't go out to sushi or on date nights too often, and when we do, we want it to be a fun and enjoyable experience, this is NOT the place. Unless you are into being treated like they are doing you a favor by treating you poorly. Lastly, this place is way over priced. read more

I visit kampai at least once a week. The fish is always incredibly fresh and the chef is well trained. The staff is always friendly and helpful. My wife and I enjoy sitting at the bar so that we can watch Sam perform. I have eaten Sushi all over the world and can honestly say Kampai rates extremely high. I've eaten here quite a few times usually taking out since it's conveniently located for me. I keep hoping it will improve but alas my disappointment continues. The cleanliness has always been an issue as the walls of the kitchen are covered in dust. They don't seem to keep a tidy work area or dining room. They have painted recently but it still doesn't pass muster. The quality of the fish is usually pretty good but they can't seem to get their rice right. Either it's too crunchy or they add too much vinegar but sometimes it's just right. Their staff turnover seems to be a constant problem and the waitstaff doesn't seem to be well-trained. Recently an Asian fellow (the owner?) has been there and the take out process seems better. I think I'll drive a little farther for my sushi needs. I hope that they can work towards restoring their quality and begin to start taking pride in their restaurant again. read more

The best Redding sushi restaurant may sound like faint praise, but Kampai has been stellar for years. One of my favorite sushi places in CA, or the country for that matter. The soft shell crab roll is served with a light rice vinegar/ soy sauce, and when eaten warm, melts in your mouth. By far our favorite, for years, has been gekkecara(?) hand rolls (temaki). The gekkecara on the menu is the maki, also wonderful, but can't compare to the creamy bliss that is the hand roll. Gekkecara roughly means 'very hot', but this in not so hot, but rather has a bit of a bite to compliment the sweetness of the fish & sauce (not sugary sweet.) Everything is wonderful, and over the years we've probably had it all. The quality and consistency has always been fantastic. Highly recommended. and probably the main reason we still go to Redding. After 10 years of living in the East Bay, still better than the sushi we've found in the Bay Area, and we earnestly try to find good sushi here. read more
