Everything we've had there has been wonderful. Locally owned and managed. Love the Tuna Ketaki and the Salmon Teriyaki. People drive for miles for their sushi. I'm not a fan of sushi but their other menu items are great. read more

I was there for lunch and the place was pretty dead. I went around 11:30 and there was 1 other table. I had the lunch bento box which included the california roll and the 1/2 vegas roll. I don't think the rolls were anything special and have better sushi across the street at Sushi on Oracle. My bento box came with miso soup, salad and an orange. Everything was just ok. The whole time I was there not a single other person came in outside of a delivery guy who was delivering an order. I have been here twice and will probably not go back given my experience and the fact that it is almost double the price of where I normally go for sushi. read more

Being avid sushi eaters I was skeptical to try sushi in Arizona. Found this place was close to our Airbnb. The fried peppers were delicious. One issue for me is that the water isn't filtered so I could taste it in the miso soup and tea. Yuck not a fan of unfiltered water I think soup and tea would be better if it was filtered. The rolls were not sexy...yes when I eat sushi I want the rolls to be delicious, neat, sexy, appetizing to the eye. The best Korean food I've had across the state. The place is clean and nice, not loud at all, so you can quietly enjoy the food and chat with families and friends of course. Everyone is polite and friendly.The food is awesome: so fresh, warm, and rich in both quality and quantity! We had bibimbap (traditional Korean dish mixed with beef, all sorts of vege, egg, rice, and really nice homemade source), chajang myun (noodle with pork and black bean source), seafood pancake. Each single bit is delicious, way more than expected. I would say it is much better than what we had at Takamatsu, which is also a good Korean and Japanese restaurant. Just this one is even better. Always fresh, always fast, and always cheap. Nice interior with two large flatscreen TV's showing sports. Miso is extremely hot so beware! The tables are always clean and the staff are friendly. This used to be "I Love Sushi" before, but way back 4 years ago, it closed down and Kampai moved in and renovated it. Walking into this sushi restaurant the first thing I noticed was carpeting... yes carpeting. Carpeting in a restaurant. It's a big strike in my book because it's hard to keep clean and even when it is kept clean it just looks wrong. Ambiance aside, the menu was a bit lengthy and overwhelming and many of the rolls seem to be very subtle variations on each other. Once I finally picked out my rolls I was happy with the overall selection. Kampai is not my favorite choice but I think this restaurant would be a good option for the family who has sushi lovers and people who would prefer other options. I'm noticing now that many of the reviews state that their Korean food is better and perhaps I will be back to try that again and possibly increase the number of stars in my review. read more

Chirashi. I think it was $18. Fish good enough, but not very artfully prepared and contained cheap fillers, lots of shredded daikon, and spiced seaweed and especially cucumber. If you want great chirashi go north about 90 miles to Sushi Ken (which was at one time the real Sushi Ten in Tucson) in Awataukee, south of Phoenix. The food here was great with huge servings and good prices! We live in Cali and out here for husbands work. We went in on a Friday night 7:45 place was empty asked if they were open and everyone smiled and said yes come in. About 4 mins after we sat down the place started getting people in. I recommend this. I will now be sad going and getting my veggie rolls and avocado rolls at my usual Cali joints because they won't be as great as here. Kampai Sushi boasts very fresh fish and an attractive, modern interior. I went for a late lunch on a week day, and it was extremely quiet. Unsurprisingly, we were the only customers there when we first arrived. The staff was attentive and polite. The salmon nigiri I had was buttery and delicious and the rolls were great. Kampai has some great lunch specials and deals on rolls. My only complaint is that they were doing some interior decorating and renovation work while we were there eating (using an electric drill to hang artwork, moving shelves around, testing the door bell, etc.). Stopped in for the second time recently; likely won't return again soon. The restaurant was busy, but we were seated in a reasonable amount of time. The space is an update from their previous location - much more open, and clean, but feels a bit sterile. We ordered cucumber salad and 4 rolls to share. Cucumber salad was pretty good - nice portion. However, the rolls left a lot to be desired. The presentation was sloppy/rushed, and the rolls were falling apart. Pieces were cut quite unevenly - some large, some very thin. I'd be willing to overlook presentation if flavors were spot-on, but it just wasn't there. Toppings were overly sweet or simply odd - what I thought should have been "spicy mayo" was just drizzled plain white mayo over the top of some rolls. Spicy tuna wasn't very spicy, "crunch" wasn't crunchy - and so on. Sushi isn't cheap - and while the prices weren't out of control, I simply believe that better product exists in Tucson for the same price point.
