Dr. Kandavel did a phenomenal job with my cataract surgery! I had a complicated case: a very very dense, fibrotic cataract; a long axial length; and a small pupil. I was completely blind in one eye and had severe anxiety about the surgery, the possible complications, and wait times. Dr. Kandavel took my super emo, erratic behavior in stride and gave me an excellent outcome. I have sharp, clear vision with 0 complications. In fact, my vision is better than we both expected; I have 20/20 vision and can still read items on my cell phone. I had no pain or blurring after surgery, which is unusual since I experienced both during cataract surgery on my other eye (performed by a different surgeon). Even though he's an in demand surgeon, Dr. Kandavel has zero ego. He is as humble as can be. I'm sure my armchair expert attitude drove him batty, but he was very diplomatic, never condescending, and always sought to explain things for greater clarity. He asks questions and actually listens! He cares for his patients and how they feel and checks in with you to see how you are. Most people don't know this, but Dr. Kandavel's first name is Ganesha. In Hindu mythology, Ganesha is the remover of obstacles, bringer of good luck, and the God of new beginnings. Dr. Kandavel is the perfect embodiment of his name. While the Dr Kandavel and Dr Dredge are great, sadly today's visit was painful. Appointment was at 9:45am, we were asked to be in by 9:30am and we arrived at 9:26am.. it was a follow up of mom's last appointment and they checked her eye but for something that's supposed to be a simple one, they said, took us more than 2 hours. When staff was asked about status or what was going on, we received different answers and still don't know why it took longer than usual. Had cataracts removed and single mono-vision lenses implanted this Spring. I can see! I've worn glasses since the 6th grade and am now 90% free of glasses. This is a hard review as for the number of stars. Dr Kandavel is a knowledgeable concerned doctor. The problem is with the overall practice which is like a factory. They could be making cars, however cars are made faster 1 Way too many clients hence service not good for all patients. Ever had 2 hours to see a doctor for just a regular visit. Ever had a team of doctors out at the same time? Ever had to make an appt months months in advance. It is a shame because the actual medical ability is good. Hence a 3 star!!!! read more

I can't say enough about how great Dr. Kandavel is. I needed cataract surgery for both of my eyes. It was getting really unsafe for me to drive. I was really stressed out about having surgery on my eyes. After meeting with Dr Kandavel, I really felt at ease. He answered all my questions and was very thorough with what to expect during and after surgery. He has a great bedside manner and is very articulate. The wait times here are really unacceptable. First visit: 50 min after appointment time i was seen by nurse then another 20-30 till the Dr saw me for a brief exam. Second time its at an hour so far and NOBODY has called me in yet. Shall not be coming here again. read more

I just had my second cataract surgery performed by Dr. Kandavel yesterday. First one was two weeks ago. Dr. Kandavel is terrific. Kind, caring, thorough, knowledgeable. The practice has several doctors so it can get busy. And while you might wait a bit past your appointment time, I've never felt rushed. When you are the in room, it is all about your care. I recommend Dr. Kandavel 100%. I happened to mention I was looking for a new primary care physician and he recommended someone who is excellent and near my home. I searched for two years to find the right surgeon for my Cataract surgery. I was extremely fortunate to find Rom Kandavel. He is not only incredibly gifted, he has the most current technology available. He is thorough in his explanations and immensely kind and a caring. The staff is unbelievably friendly and helpful from Luis at the door to every tech in the place. I was having an issue and called the office and immediately I had a staff member going out of his way to make certain I was taken care of. I cannot say enough about this incredible surgeon and office. And all of this took place during the pandemic. Their protocols were superior and I felt perfectly safe with both the pre-surgery visits, the surgery and the follow ups. read more

My second unbelievable bad visit related to poor office training and management. they display incredible arrogance with requests from elderly patients. lately it was them separating my 92 year old dad from his caregiver, me.i told them he cant be separated from me but for an hour they did just that. my complaint was met with irritability from the office manager and a staff member. while stil keeping him hidden the dr comes out and says my complaint was so egregious that they would not see him. Rom seems disconnected from the activities of the staff and the lack of consideration for special needs patients. it feels like a manufacturing facility more than a compassionate place of care. scary the way they work with cognitively impaired older people. they need to fix this serious deficit of care. The Dr is competent in medicine but seems not to care when patients are mistreated by his heartless staff. read more

If I could title this review anything, it would be "Above and Beyond." Dr. Rom Kandavel was highly recommended by my primary care physician and didn't once disappoint. He is highly professional, uncannily intelligent and extraordinarily skilled. And his cataract surgery on my damaged right eye on October 2019 went through without a hitch. His staff is courteous and efficient. So he'd get 5 stars on that basis alone. But there's more...and I would like to add another 5 stars if I could for what happened next. Fast forward to Sunday March 1, 2020--when somehow I got a stinging sensation and painful particle in my same (right) eye at 6 a.m. Aware that I needed emergency treatment, my wife called Dr. Kandavel's Office at 9 a.m. on Sunday and got none other than Rom Kandavel himself on the phone. Even though he was home and about to take a run, his response was immediate: "You're in pain now. So let's fix it now," he told us. "Meet me at my office in 45 minutes." We did. He did. And he got a mote out of my eye the size of a small cinder and took me out of three of the most agonizing hours I'd spent in 20 years. You cannot put a price on that kind of caring personal treatment--something so rare in this day and age. He is a terrific doctor and a superb human being. 10 Stars for Dr. Kandavel! The wait time to see this Dr is a big mess. Very small office, and they booked too many patients at the same time. Now this Rom Randavel is really good to tell you that you need all kind of tests, procedures, shoot laser on your eyes, etc., just to bill the insurance because those procedures do not produce any result, in another words he is more interested getting money than anything else. He takes his time with you and explains everything that is going on in a very calm manner. I return every year for a full examine and monitoring the progress of my vision. Very successful cataract surgery with Dr. Kandavel... I opted for the laser because of the precision it provides. Awesome results... could read the Wall St Journal without glasses the next morning after surgery... and I experienced absolutely no pain before, during and after surgery. I now can see unbelievable colors everywhere. Thank you Dr. Kandavel! As a handicapped person, I cannot say enough 'thank you' s to Dr Kandavel and his team. They provided careful and caring positioning that was very attentive and most helpful. Bless them for their kindness and thoughtfulness. Dr. Kandavel is a fabulous surgeon... and also a very skilled and talented ophthalmologist... a few years ago I had an intensely painful right eye where the sharp pain kept changing locations. Ok. Long story. I had a guest from abroad (read, no insurance) who developed vision problems. Thinking it may be just glasses, we went to Costco in Woodland Hills, CA. Thanks to David Camuccio, OD, he was concerned by his exam and sent us straight to see Dr. Kandavel. Dr. Kandavel saw us as a courtesy consult and after doing a few tests, strongly advised me to take my guest to UCLA emergency because she had increased intracranial pressure and needed an MRI. This was at 5:30 on a Wednesday evening. She was admitted to the ER at UCLA by 8:00 that evening, had her MRI and various tests and was admitted for observation. Thursday afternoon while still in the hospital waiting for lab results, I received a phone call. It was Dr. Kandavel inquiring as to my guests' eye health and whether or not she had had the MRI. He also suggested that she may have a type of auto immune problem, a syndrome called VKH, and should definitely see a retinologist. I asked the opthalmalogist on staff about this VKH but he was leaning in another direction. The next day we saw retina specialists at Jules Stein and the ultimate diagnosis was...VKH!!! First of all, who ever heard of a consultant reaching out after the consult to see if her problem was taken care of? I never have - Dr. Kandavel exhibited to me and my guest a great professional, caring and calm manner, and conscientiousness for a patient that we would all hope that our doctors show. Highly recommend him...I will be making my own appointment there in the near future. read more
