That level of dedication is hard to find. One thing I always appreciated was that class didn't just end because the clock hit a certain time. If people were still getting rounds in, Coach Dustin would stay until everyone finished unless he genuinely had somewhere to be. It showed how much he cared about giving his students every opportunity to train. I left Las Vegas because of a move, and leaving this academy was the hardest part. I wanted…read moreto leave a message for any parents who are on the fence about having their children train in martial arts, especially their daughters. Master Black presented my daughter with her black belt just before she turned 16, and this experience has been so much more than I expected. I know it wasn't always easy for her to persevere; Master Black had to have a serious heart-to-heart with her once (I think it was at the high green or low brown belt level). As a single parent, it was often challenging for me to find the money to pay for these classes or to ask friends for help with pick-ups and drop-offs when I couldn't manage it myself. Yes, I'm incredibly proud of her, and it's fun to say she's a black belt--though she won't tell you that herself. However, as the world has only gotten crazier over the years, the real value of this training has become clear. Allowing my child the freedom to explore life has been so much easier knowing she can handle herself. I cherish the memories of watching her flip 6-foot-tall Mr. Avery over her head from a choke hold multiple times (Bless you, Mr. Avery!) and of the time a salesman in a furniture warehouse startled us and I saw her immediately go into a stance without hesitation--then it was his turn to be startled, I saw his eyes go wide. These are the thoughts I hold onto as I try to sleep, knowing my daughter is "out there in the world" and not under my roof. So do it--go meet Master Black, show up, and don't give up. It's right off the 215 and Gibson exit, which makes it super easy to access. I'm currently making my way towards my bachelor's degree in criminal justice at UNLV, on track to graduate next fall, so this class was a perfect opportunity to work with Metro and what to expect when I begin a career in the criminal justice field. Can I just say that I got in a much well needed workout here? Being the big workout nerd I am, this class was extremely useful for me and I learned new moves and techniques to use anytime I'm in danger or when I feel threatened. This was an all-female self defense class, which I truly appreciated. We were introduced to one of the owners of Gracie Barra, Rafaela (I think that's how you spell her name), who guided us step after step to each self-defense workout. Some moves were easy, some moves were a little difficult and confusing than others. Other instructors went around and helped us every step of the way. My fitness levels are at a good standing and I was told by my self-defense partner that I had excellent strength, mostly in my thighs. With the conclusion of the class, everyone that attended was offered one free week of jiu-jitsu classes, plus we all got a goodie bag from LVMPD. I'm returning next week to attend one of these classes and I can't wait! Looking forward to it!

It wasn't easy finding a place that tailors to teenagers (youth) since most of the martial arts businesses I've researched had smaller kids or adults. And to find a place that had some female students so that my daughter can easily relate with (girl standpoint). Long story short, the very first day of class, she had a huge meltdown outside of the studio not wanting to go through with it. There were a couple older kids who helped talk to her, calm her down, and pretty much "handheld" her into trying the class. Thankfully she got through it. Big thanks to John, Caesar, Bianca, and Stephanie. You guys are awesome! Fast forward 6 months later, my daughter has made new friends and has gained a lot more confidence.
