We recently ordered catering from Kanoya for a gathering, and everything was outstanding. The two sushi platters were a huge hit--beautifully prepared with fresh, delicious fish. We also ordered the furikake chicken, tonkatsu, salmon, and fried rice, and every single dish was flavorful and delicious. It's not often that every item in a large catering order is a winner, but Kanoya absolutely delivered. Been wanting to try Kanoya for a while and lucky we finally did! Sushi and service did not disappoint! We tried various nigiri sushi and 1 roll as we didn't want to get full too fast as rolls have more rice. The sushi rice was good and not much on the nigiri sushi. The fish was fresh and liked that they cut out the red blood portion on the hamachi pieces! The only negative was parking. You have to park upstairs where Hawaiian Brian's and 24 Hour Fitness patrons park too and the stalls are narrow. There's stairs that you need to use to get to Kanoya and they do validate your parking. Might be difficult for elderly and handicap patrons. I believe there's 3-4 stalls in front of Kanoya's front entrance but lucky if you can get one. We would return if lucky to get parking in front. read more

Kanoya has great rolls, I love the combinations they have. I ordered the dark dragon roll with seared salmon on top, avocado, crab imitation meat, and fried tempura flakes. I could eat this for days and days, it's flavorful but also balanced at the same time. They even gave us a private room because of our large party and they had karaoke too! read more

This is by far my FAVORITE sushi restaurant on the island! Great service, amazing menu choices, delicious cocktails, fantastic deals on DoorDash, and a very aesthetically pleasing restaurant style. I like that it's located near Ala Moana and the Blaisdell Center, so it's easy to get to on foot when I have a mall day or check out local vendor events. I found them when I first moved here and have tried many other spots on the island but this has always remained my favorite. I couldn't recommend it enough! They have booths with soft couches under Japanese-themed decor. The hostess, who also doubled as our server, was super helpful and gave some solid food recommendations. The only downside was the slow service, which seemed to be due to the restaurant being a bit overwhelmed by a big crowd that came in from the convention center around the same time. Given their close proximity to the convention center, it feels like this is something that probably happens often, so I'd hope they'll be better prepared for that in the future. That is how good everything was. Before coming, I checked Yelp and kept seeing people say this was the best sushi they had ever had. I thought to myself, all sushi tastes the same and even if some are better, it can't be that different. But with so many glowing reviews, we decided to give it a try. There were four of us and we ordered quite a few items. The very first appetizer arrived and we were instantly blown away. The flavors were balanced and bold. The presentation was beautiful and inviting. The ingredients were incredibly fresh. The quality was undeniable. I do wish the servings were a little bigger, but honestly, I would rather have a small portion of something unforgettable than a large portion of something average. And yes, by the end of the night and honestly throughout the entire dinner, we found ourselves joining what felt like the official Kanoya chant. This is the best sushi ever. Each dish arrived with its own little burst of magic and every bite made us look at each other with that wide eyed, happy disbelief that only truly good food can create. It became impossible not to say it out loud. We were fully converted. What really stood out was how every bite felt intentional. Nothing tasted rushed or generic. You could feel the care in the preparation and the pride in the flavors. It is the kind of place that makes you pause mid conversation because the food deserves your full attention. It is the kind of place you immediately start recommending to your friends before you even finish eating. Overall, we absolutely loved our experience at Kanoya and we are already planning our next visit. Very very soon. Parking is not the best but be patient, it will be worth the effort. You have three options. If you are lucky, you can grab one of the very limited stalls in front of the restaurant. Another option is the building parking structure which is shared with 24 Hour Fitness and Hawaiian Brian's. These places get extra busy at night so parking can be a challenge, but if you do find a spot, 24 Hour Fitness will validate your ticket. In a crowded market of Japanese food options, I feel like this place might struggle. We thought we'd give it a chance knowing that this spot turns over often and needs a following for establishments to last here. Even the venerable Odoriko couldn't make the location work. Food options here lean towards tourists, I think. Lots of unusual/odd sushi combinations and unfamiliar flavors. Green salads are only served with one dressing option, a scary sounding "fruit dressing" which was totally indescribable. Very thick, very odd. We passed on the furikake chicken appetizer as it apparently came with a "coconut condensed milk" sauce. Hmmm. The shrimp tempura sushi roll was fine but had lettuce wrapped inside and a good unagi sauce drizzle on top but also a sweet flavor that I couldn't place at all. Odd. The pork tonkatsu ($30) was THIN and coated in so much black pepper that it was actually spicy. It wasn't right IMHO. We may have just ordered wrong or been here on an off night. FIVE stars for the service! Four stars for the food and amenities. The fam was looking for a new Japanese food place to try for Mom/Gram's birthday so we decided to give Kanoya a try. I'm soooo glad we did! Reservations were easy to make and after I added a note about it being for Mom/Gram's 88th birthday, I got a sweet email from Aaron saying they would make it a great experience. He wasn't lying. They greeted her with an orchid lei, which made her face light up because purple is her fave color and orchids are her fave flower. Ok, on to the food. Started with the Dinosaur Egg, which was excellent! Unique and delish. I wasn't sure how avocado would taste heated, but it was really good! Bro got the creamy salmon bites and chicken katsu, which he (and Hubs, who got a taste) said were both good. Bro-in-law got the sizzling salmon teriyaki, which he said was cooked perfectly. It was also generous enough that he was able to share with Gram, who only ordered her usual mundane California roll. Bro-in-law also got the Lover Lava roll, which was so pretty! Hubs ordered the Angry Dragon Roll, Spicy Tun Roll with Crunch, and Yellowtail nigiri. He was the only one who said he food was just ok. Son got the Seafood Udon, which he inhaled (didn't let me take a pic, either). Dot got the Spicy Tuna Roll (no crunch), and split the Hawaii Roll with me. I LOVED the Hawaii Roll. Better than my salmon avocado, though that was fine as well. For those of us who ordered typical rolls of sushi, it was fine. But for the unique and unusual items, they were something special. Then, to top it off, the server brought Mom/Gram a special birthday dessert, on the house. And led us all in singing Happy Birthday! I think it was some kind of tempura fried matcha ice cream. I don't know for certain since Mom/Gram did NOT share. lol But she cleaned it up and was happy and content. Overall, a great experience! The only downside, and this isn't really Kanoya's fault, is the parking. It's soooo confusing. We drove up the ramp to the very tight 24 Hour Fitness parking, but the signs for Kanoya said take the stairs to Level 2. Ummm, we parked on level 2, and the only stairs we saw led UP. After wandering around and debating amongst ourselves for about 5 minutes, we finally noticed the Kanoya sign that pointed to the 24 Hour Fitness door. You have to actually go inside 24 Hour, walk down the stairs to the street level, exit and turn right to get to the Kanoya front door. And that's when we noticed that there were a few Kanoya stalls in that street-level parking just outside the front door. But they were so tight, I doubt we wouldn't been able to squeeze in there anyway. Our server Kelly was super friendly and really cute! Even though it was a really busy night, she didn't forget about us and always noticed what we needed right away, which made the whole experience feel so comfortable. At one point she even apologized for the slow service at the end, and we were like, "chill girl, we can clearly see a lot is going on, you're doing great!" Honestly, appreciated her kindness and positive energy despite how hectic things were. On top of that, my husband is Japanese and his English isn't very strong, so she would slow down when speaking and even used a few Japanese words to help him understand. That meant a lot to us. I came here about few months ago, and back then everything was wonderful. The service was warm, the staff was attentive, and we left with such a good impression of this restaurant. Most of the good experiences we had here were on Tuesdays, which is why we decided to come back to Kanoya again on Tuesday. Unfortunately, this recent visit was completely different. The new servers (I guess he is new due to what happened next) were incredibly rude, and it honestly seemed like he couldn't properly communicate in English. Enabled to understand our order, can't get our drink correct, even our none of our requests is being processed, which made the entire experience frustrating from start to finish. What upset us the most was the lack of hygiene. We saw him scratching his head and then touching our food right afterward. It was honestly disgusting and completely ruined our appetite. They offer a Buy One Get One Free deal, but it's a total illusion. Instead of getting two full-sized items, they clearly cut the portions in half and shoved them into a small box. I tried this plate out a few months back when they first opened. The husband & I was craving for sushi, so decided to give this place a try again. Parking was a little confusing at first but you park at the Hawaiian brians parking lot, walk through the 24 hour fitness and walk down to the ground level. I love how the booths are like a private dining experience with a lounge type of chair/sofa. They also had cute decor. We were extremely hungry so we ordered right away. A few things we got: Yellowtail carpaccio (4-5) - it was a different name on the menu but definitely a carpaccio. Came with slices of yellowtail, a ponzu sauce, jalapeño & sriracha on top. Raw oysters (5/5) - I LOVED how they offered a variety of oysters especially kumamoto's. Kumamoto's are smaller in size but taste better to me than pacific/blue point oysters. Chicken katsu - I can't give this a rating bc it's like every typical chicken katsu with the JAPANESE style katsu sauce. Clam miso soup (2/5) - it was basically basic miso soup with clams inside. Nothing special about it and tasted a bit watered down. Deep fried soft shell crab (5/5) - I love a good soft shell crab! They topped this with seaweed salad and tobiko! Yum Hamachi Kama (5/5) - The hamachi Kama portion was HUGE and well worth your money! Def loved this Assorted Nigiri (Salmon, Ahi, Uni & Unagi) (3/5) - Freshness was ok! I just didn't like how everything was room temperature :( I'm very scared to get food poisoning from a previous sushi restaurant. I'm really used to eating sushi or the fish slightly above room temp. It may have been sitting? Not sure Moving on to the service, our server wasn't bad or good. He was ok. Maybe he was new to the job? I try not to be hard on servers but the restaurant wasn't busy at all. We needed our check a few things, we had to ask twice. We saw him to the side talking amongst a coworker. Which is fine if the restaurant was busy. But the establishment wasn't event at 50% capacity when I went. The music they played through out our experience was interesting... I just didn't understand it being played at a sushi restaurant or find it pleasant during our meal. Overall, I really was hoping for better things from the last time I've come to this establishment. But I don't think I'll be returning. It wasn't horrible but it didn't meet my expectations for a sushi restaurant. read more
