This was hard to find and out of the way; we stumble into it looking for something else. We stoped in for a drink and a snack. Big open space, everything was clean even the restroom. I guess every bar does not make Mai Tais, they had a specialty drink called "classics never die", that said is rum, lime, and Thai basil. It was a classic daiquiri straight up. Every once in a while I get together with my uncle for lunch. This time I chose to try Thirty Eight which has taken over the space previously occupied by Nami Kaze which I really enjoyed. With a reservation for 11:30 on a Wednesday, the restaurant was half empty (or half full depending on your perspective). The food came out pretty quickly, given that we were able to order, eat, and pay in under an hour. We tried the cabbage Caesar salad. My uncle had the miso butterfish while I tried the ahi belly. My uncle thought the miso butterfish was okay. However I found the ahi belly to be super salty. The watercress was actually a salad (which isn't clear on the menu), but the dressing was super salty. It tasted like they just poured fish sauce on it. The ahi belly itself was cooked perfectly, but again too salty. It comes with a ponzu butter sauce with capers and the fish was salty with and without the sauce. I'm not a big potato salad fan but that was the saving grace to be honest.. that and the slightly mushy rice. I was this close to asking for no rice and am so glad I did not. I don't say this often, but unfortunately, I don't think I'd return. In the former Nami Kaze space, the family-owned restaurant offers lunch, happy hour, dinner and a full bar. Our group stopped by for an early dinner and had a great time and received fantastic service. Our group's favorite was the Spicy Ahi Cracker appetizer and I really loved my Ahi Steak entree. The local bigeye ahi is topped with a delicious kanzuri shoyu buttah and served on top of a watercress salad with a generous serving of confit potato. Yum! My friends raved about the furikake salmon, but its the only entree that doesn't come with a starch. We had a great experience and I would definitely return. I liked the food, service, and ambience. This is the old Nami kaze spot. The restaurant for the most part is exactly the same inside. The menu I felt was pretty limited and pricey. There wasn't much variety. We came just before 5p and was told there was happy hour. We ordered a bunch of things off the happy hour menu to get in an order of happy hour priced things. Then we got the regular menu and realized everything on the happy hour menu except select drinks and oysters were exactly the same price. Boo! So watch out the happy hour menu is deceiving!! Hot and new in Honolulu! Steps away from Pier 38 (probably why it's called Thirty Eight lol). All the fish is sooo fresh! While dining here, I even saw a truck full of fish being hauled out. Even though it's right on the pier, when you step inside the space is beautifully renovated and has a very upscale Japanese and Scandinavian feel (Japandi, as they call it). I came for lunch, but was lucky enough that they also let me try some of their dinner menu items. Maguro cabbage dish is almost like a classic ahi sashimi dish but with a ginger scallion sauce that I wish they bottled up so I could put it on everything. The poke cracker is unlike any other poke chip I've tried because of the rice cracker! It's so much lighter and lets the fresh ahi do all the talking. Another take on a local classic is their mixed plate with their daily catch, ponzu butter, potato salad, watercress salad, spam fried rice. Perfect for lunch and the plate is PACKED with food. Everyone has calamari on their menu but here they do a calamari katsu and they do it takoyaki. And yes, it's real calamari and so tender. If you come for dinner, you gotta try out their fried whole moi with alii mushroom & lup chong stuffing, and bok choy. The lup chong stuffing made it feel like thanksgiving, but I'd take this over a turkey any day. I wasn't even planning on drinking but then I saw the Rising Phoenix made with tequila blanco, chili pepper water, lime. It was one the best cocktails I've had in a really long time. One salmon, one ahi, one moi, one beef, etc. The kitchen did a great job getting the food out and serving tasty grinds. Prices lean a bit high for a space that feels a bit casual but the quality of food ingredients and preparation is good. This is an awful time to open a new restaurant. Thirty Eight is a new seafood joint featuring a local assortment of fish and ingredients. It's clean and well lit and has a pretty good amount of seating. Staff is friendly and the kitchen is well organized. Our water was always full and staff is always attentive. Parking is plentiful, though some walking may be required. Food is not only amazing but the prices is reasonable for being a seafood restaurant. For starters we had the Caesar Cabbage which had anchovies and dressing. Nice saltiness and not served like a traditional Caesar Salad. Well balanced and full of flavor. Oysters were fresh! Could've eaten 2 orders if we didn't order a lot of food. The shrimp toast was a winner. The dipping sauce was amazing! For entrees we had the huli huli chicken which could've used a bit more seasoning, but the meat was super tender and it came with kabocha watercress salad which tasted really well. The poke crackers were also a hit at our table. It only comes in twos so be prepared to order more cuz it's tasty!!! This is a place still in its soft opening. It feels like there is a lot of work still to be done. This is a first brick and mortar for Chef Justin Inagaki, who says, "I'm a fine dining chef actually, by trade ... My wheelhouse is ... whatever the concept might be. I also want to be different - we don't just want to be like everybody else." The place still has the same layout as the former Nami Kaze. There is no sign currently up and you'd have to know to find them ... or just be curious and take a chance. There is minimal service - you take a seat anywhere, order and pay via QR code, and your order will be brought to you when ready. If you just want to take away then head to the POS station by the bar. It appears they have a limited liquor license. The back bar shelves reflect the limited offerings available. The soft opening menu is pretty basic. A couple of soups and salads, four entrees, a couple of sandwiches. The food descriptions sound very promising but the actual execution falls short. I went with Nadine C and Peter Y, who both ordered the salmon entree - it looked good but neither actually said they thought the salmon stood out. A Yelper at another table recognized Nadine and mentioned the hamburger steak plate wasn't to their taste either. I ordered the fish & chips - to compare it with Nico's. The description is, beer & vodka battered ahi belly, salt & pepper slaw, house tartar sauce, house finadene, fries. My three pieces of ahi belly were overcooked. There was no slaw included. The fries were packaged crinkle cup ones - a couple of pieces had unappetizing green ends. There were three wedges of lemon - all dry, and one going bad with a brown end. I was really surprised they cared so little about the plating - in a take away container - that they would give me the bad pieces of fries and lemon. I really hoped to enjoy this but the fish & chips were barely better than a low end drive-in. Maybe things will improve. But for now I prefer the fish and chips and bar service at Nicos Pier 38. Congratulations on your opening! My foodie friend Che Wai heard that they just opened and wanted to try it out. Signage isn't quite ready yet but they are the former Nami Kaze at Pier 38. As of this post, there's no host, it's open seating. At each table is a QR code to scan for the menu and ordering. Payment is processed through that ordering system and all dishes were served to us in take out containers. Perhaps shortage of staff at this time? We started with the ahi tataki. Incredibly tasty with a delightful ponzu dressing. Super fresh ahi from their market next door, perfectly seasoned and seared. I'm guessing the lunch portion is smaller than the dinner portion, based on the business picture on their Yelp page. Next we had their clam chowder. We wanted to try the lobster bisque but for some reason couldn't find it as an option to order at lunch. Perhaps only offered at dinner time? The clam chowder was flavorful. Then we split the shoyu chicken. It was two huge pieces of chicken over rice. This one missed the mark for us. It wasn't as flavorful as we expected and the chicken was a tad bit on the dry side. Even though they had lots and lots of sauce over the rice. For dessert, we topped off our meal with a delicious chocolate temptation. I'm not sure what happened to the top layer of chocolate on our slice and I would have enjoyed a little bit larger of a slice but otherwise, this satisfied my chocolate crave. The interior has not changes much from Nami Kaze. The staff was very friendly and service was great. The food here is mostly centered around fresh seafood. We tried multiple dishes and drinks. For drinks, the rising phoenix was my favorite. For food the Cabbage Caesar and Spicy Ahi Cracker are must have starters. I was surprised with how much I enjoyed the salad. For mains we had the salmon, chicken and short ribs. The salmon and short ribs were definitely the highlights for me. We wanted to try this new restaurant at Pier 38 for dinner. We had two couples and it was the first time any of us dined at the restaurant. However one of the couples did dine at Nami Kaze Hawaiʻi, the former occupant of the space. That explains why the interior design and layout had a Japanese feel to it. This restaurant is over priced and not worth coming back. Although the server was polite and cheerful, she was no where to be seen for about 30 minutes when other servers had to bring out our food. The restaurant has a standard operating procedure (SOP) in place where the server asks if anyone is allergic to any food. We started off with a couple of appetizers 1. Cabbage Caesar: 3/5 Delicious and crunchy, but very salty IMO. I loved the tiny crispy fish and capers, but these 2 combo made it too salty. Whole moi: 5/5 It came out extra hot and steamy, love! The lap cheong accompanied it which gave it the asian flavors. Calamari katsu: 5/5 I love their take on this. Instead of cut up calamari, they used a giant "steak" but which gave it a nice "meaty" bite. I'm not mad at it and quite the opposite! Delicious all around. This is at the pier where Nami Kaze was located in Nimitz. We did takeout which I'm so happy is available on the Toast app. Pick up was ready on time even a smidge early which was great for starving bellies. Food was presented pretty nicely for takeout! We enjoyed our lunch meal immensely. Tried the Spicy Ahi Cracker, Calamari Katsu, Cabbage Caesar, and the Mix Plate. Everything was yummy and boxes were nearly licked clean. The Spicy Ahi Cracker was a pretty fancy dish for takeout. The drops of the two sauces were a nice contrast, added yummy fat and acid, and really made the ahi standout. The Cabbage Caesar was so unique, huge portion, lots of miso Caesar dressing on the side (saved one it was that good), and fun with the fried anchovy topping mixed with Parmesan. Calamari Katsu was crispy and had okonomiyaki flavor profile. Mix Plate was a fun bento style box with a little bit of everything and a preview of the mains- fried daily catch, short ribs, spicy ahi poke, watercress salad, and potato salad, and fried rice. Prices are pretty reasonable for the quality and portion. Want to try dinner sometime soon. Will be back! read more

What a great place. We did a family dinner tonight and everything was perfect. First off if you're familiar with Pier 38 you know there is plenty of parking and Thirty Eight sits right across from Pops Fishing so easy to locate. We made a dinner reservation from their website for 4:45 and got there early so just in time for happy hour which we just ordered off of. The atmosphere is open and lighting is perfect. Our waitress was the nicest young girl and stayed on top of everything. Delicious starters of Calamari Katsu, Edamame, Cucumber Tomato, and Kamaboko Crab Dip. Since we arrived during happy hour we selected our meals from the Happy Hour menu which was fish tacos, chicken sandwiches, and fish sandwiches. Not dinner fare but filling and delicious. We finished off with some shisho mint chocolate chip and Vietnamese iced coffee ice cream which both were smooth and once again delicious. I don't have any negatives to say and we will definitely go back again. Give them a try I promise you will not be disappointed. read more

Thirty Eight just opened up for their dinner service, providing dinner from 5:30-8:30 M-F. It is located in the old Nami Kaze space, and if you miss the space, it's the same; however, don't expect the same food you got at NK. The menu is pretty small and if you want a land option, there aren't a lot to choose from. But since it's right on the water, I would recommend getting something from the sea. We started with the hamachi crudo, which was really good. The plating was a little odd because it was in a bowl, and it was such a nicely plated dish, I wish we could see it plated. It was good and fresh and I wish I got 2 of them. We also had the shrimp toast, which not really a standout, but the dipping sauce was so good. The shrimp toast was a generous portion of shrimp and you receive two pieces. For mains, we had the salmon and the short rib. The salmon was just okay, it was very hot temperature which meant waiting for a while to eat with my party. The greens and everything else that went with it were excellent. For the short rib, the portion size was wonderful. I would highly recommend this dish for those who want a land option. The best part was the sweet potato on top. The meat was very tender and juicy. There is a bar available with a few signature drinks, but when we went, there was no local beer available. I would give this place time because the food was very fresh. We were in and out of there in about an hour. Also, random--the TV behind the bar and the one to the left of it don't work, which was kind of distracting to stare at. Also, the service was just fine. Nothing extraordinary about it, but again, dinner service is new, so I will just give it time. And for those concerned, there's plenty parking available. read more

Checked out 38 Honolulu, They have a New chef and this brand-new seafood bistro - is the NEW kid on the block -- We visited opening night and is located in the former Namakaze space near Nico's Pier, and it's already making a strong first impression. The vibe is effortlessly cool: casual, comfortable, and trendy, with a beautifully executed Asian-fusion sensibility. The staff was genuinely enthusiastic, inviting, and welcoming throughout the evening. Highlights started with the shrimp toast (absolutely outstanding -- a must), followed by the anchovy cabbage Caesar salad, calamari katsu very similar to a takoyaki style and perfectly blistered shishito peppers. The cocktails we enjoyed were, balanced, and truly some of the most delicious drinks we've had in a while. The passion fruit sour was especially memorable. For the mains, the Moi and Black Cod were cooked flawlessly and packed with flavor. A very exciting new addition to the neighborhood... definitely one to watch. We'll absolutely be returning and recommending "Thirty Eight HONOLULU " to friends and family. See you soon! read more
