All I can say is WOW!! My friends and I just HAD to check it out on opening night and the lines were long but worth it!! The ambiance is on a whole other level. You're truly transported somewhere tropical as soon as you walk in the door. The service here was amazing. Everyone was incredibly nice and smiling the whole time. Even when it was packed and you could tell it was stressful, everyone appeared to be having fun. The food was to die for! I had the "Ahi Salad" with a side of "Mac & Potato Salad" and I have no words! Drink wise I had the "Domino" which is a must try if you are checking out Kapu. Our waitress said it was a fan favorite so far. We also had the "Saturn" a blended drink with passion fruit, lemon, and gin. Also amazing! I also decided to try the "Jungle Bird" and while some people may like it-- the whole table was not a fan. Super strong and bitter! We were lucky to get into Kapu on opening night and it was totally worth it. If you want to escape the worries and problems of your day Kapu is for you! From the minute you enter you can feel and see the vibe is fun and to have a good time. The decor and lighting around the bar, "huts" (booths) tables, Captains Quarters etc are all first class. It's a tiki bar so there is a large array of specialty drinks to please everyone. A Mai Tai and Scuttle were delicious. You will want to try them all! The food compliments the drinks and surroundings perfectly. We had the garlic chicken, crispy pork belly and shrimp dumplings. Yum! My husband loves tiki bars so we were excited to try Kapu as its a great addition to Petaluma. We had reservations and were seated at a table near the bar. Service was unbelievably slow.. we had 3 different servers throughout the night. We wanted to order a 2nd drink but was turned off by the service that we decided to just pay and leave. Since we had so much time to kill in-between the poor service, we were people watching other tables which has servers constantly come up to check in with them. I don't know if we were just in a weird section but it was obviously so inconsistent. The two other tables immediately next to us were in the same situation as us. I'll never be back. read more

I had read about this bar from a magazine and was looking forward to trying this out with a friend. We came on a Friday night around maybe 8:30-9 pm. We didn't have reservations but were quickly seated in the side room where they have the four pinball machines. The decor was intriguing enough, but the main purpose for my visit was to try the pinball machines and try the drinks. After being seated, we were quickly given water by the hostess. That was the last interaction we had with any of the staff for the next twenty minutes or so that we were sat there. While I'm never expectant for any sort of preferential catered service, we were astonished that we were left to sit there without acknowledgement if we were going to be able to order anything from the regular menu or the drink menu. Again, I have never expected anyone to go out of their way to provide exemplary service, but it was frustrating to be sitting around trying to figure out if we were ever going to be able to order anything or if we were wasting our time. A simple walk-by and "I'll be with you shortly" or "We're a little slammed but we'll get to you" would have been a good indicator for us. Due to the fact that we were not even greeted by anyone or told that we would be helped, my friend ended up going to the full bar to see if he could even receive service there. At that time, I was finally greeted by a waitress and asked if I wanted to order anything. After explaining that my friend had had to go to the bar to finally order something after a prolonged period of servers not being around, the waitress responded that at that point, we should just stick with our tab with the bar instead of starting a new one with her because the system could not combine the two. I understood but still decided to just order food so we could at least start a tab for our table to get service. After perusing the menu, I ordered the poke nachos and the banana split. Shortly after, my friend had arrived back with our drinks. Regarding food and drink, we understood that this place needs to work on both. Our drinks were both just terrible. My friend ordered the Jasper's Punch while I had the Missionary's downfall. The first was unbalanced and frankly a face punch. The second was incredibly awful as well where we both could barely take sips of it but forced ourselves to at least drink half of it to justify spending $16 on each drink. For the food, it was the same sad tale. While the poke nachos had an ok flavor (once you added the additional $1 spicy sauce on top of it), it was a complete rip off at $24 for 6 small wonton chips with maybe 16 small tiny cubes of tuna and a quarter of half an avocado. I'm not a penny pincher by any means, but this seemed almost comical and a ripoff. The banana split also came not long after the nachos but was probably the only redeeming factor about this place for me personally. It tasted incredible and had the perfect balance with the banana lumpia like things not too sweet to help balance the rice puffs and vanilla ice cream and sauce. In between the bad service and the badly portioned food, the other attraction that brought us in turned out to have problems as well. Two out of the four pinball machines that they have were working while the others were not. While one of the ones that were inoperable had tape over the coin slot, the Flash Gordon machine was stealing many people's coins and remained inoperable. We didn't realize this until we tried it ourselves. The remaining tables that worked didn't work well either. Overall, it was just a triad of failure. I have recently discovered that this bar has just recently opened and am unsure if this review is fair, but I can't imagine writing reviews like everyone else here giving this place more stars than it should have just because of the novelty of this in Petaluma. I understand that maybe while trying to smooth out the kinks, this bar is going to have issues with service, the food quantity, and the drinks. I'm unsure if I will return to this bar in the near future, but I hope any of these reviews are genuinely taken into consideration to better the overall experience and to help not make their customers broke. read more

We were on the "wait list" for 5 hrs to seat 6; there isn't a lot of seating to accommodate larger groups. It's a darkish setting. Decore is well done. Tried the Missionaries Downfall which was not very good. Non-blended drinks in tall glasses are completely filled with small crushed/tiny ice cubes. The Daquiri, Iron Shirt and Sesame Chi Chi were blended and the only ones liked by mostly everyone. Staff are friendly and approachable although one staff person asked us to move, while the other told us to stay in a particular area... they're just on different pages. The ahi nachos are personal size; can't share. Overall, I'd give this place a yr or so to find its footing... at least I hope they make it a year. read more

We had such a fun time on our first visit to the new trendy Tiki Bar, Kapu. The interior is very fun, and divided into sections. There is the main large bar and seating area with smaller sections on the periphery. One area has a few pinball machines and low seating areas. The music was a wee bit too loud when we arrived, 2:10pm. We didn't have a Rez, but, as the bar was just opening on a Saturday afternoon, we were able to be sat down right away at the mostly empty bar. The hostess was very gracious and made sure we had all of the menus. Right away, Ashleigh greeted us promptly and continued to help us make decisions on what to order throughout our stay. We started with a classic Mai Tai and she suggested Tropical Itch we loved both. We also ordered two bites. The poke nachos and the boiled peanuts. My hubby loved the peanuts, I couldn't get over how messy they were, as they are served shell on and covered with the ginger scallion sauce. The poke was more successful, but, I felt the portion was disappointing at the cost of $24. The second round we decided to try the blended frozen premade drinks. The Banana Foster and the Saturn. The Foster is yummy with a very banana forward taste, and the Saturn was nicely tart. We would love to go back as we found the whole experience very fun and tasty. read more

I love a good Tiki bar and Kapu is one of the best! I've been here multiple times now and have yet to be disappointed. The drinks are all created to perfection with a wide range of rum cocktails to choose from. I recently tried their lumpia for the first time which was delicious so need to go back to try more items on the menu. It is on the pricey side with most drinks being $16 but I would say it's well worth the price. The restaurant transports you out of petaluma to a place where life doesn't seem so stressful. Came here for drinks and apps before a show at the Mystic Theatre and were not disappointed. Had a long happy hour last night at this fun upbeat spot in Petaluma. We were greeted by several very friendly staff members but service was spotty when we were seated in the small room next to the bar - the red room. Decor is fabulous and music great. We tried several of the signature cocktails- all well made and balanced in flavor. Many beers on tap and in bottle options but wine list is sorely lacking. Food is solid - tried boiled peanuts, poke bowl, fries with pork and cheese, and fried chicken - all flavorful and nicely presented but pricey. The room we were seated in has pinball Machines and consequently there was a revolving door of children coming in to enjoy the games - we loved this! I sometimes question the effectiveness of Yelp. You get waaaay too many people that leave the most questionable reviews. "I came on a Saturday night with 10 people and they couldn't seat me." The tiki drink I had was filled with crushed ice." "The waiter/waitress wasn't at my beckon call on a busy Friday night." "The menu was difficult to unfold (??!!!?? For real)" These are the same jerks that will leave a review for a gas station or a Safeway. Now that I have that off my chest I would like to tell you about the great time I had with my family (including a 4 year old). They accommodated us in every aspect from the moment we walked in. The drinks were delicious and yes, they use crushed ice just like every other tiki bar. The food was very good. Their signature mugs are fun. Finally checked out the newest tiki bar in Petaluma last night, KAPU. We've been hesitant to go since I don't drink alcohol and would the pupus be worth the drive? The answer? Absolutely! We tried an array of dishes and they were all spectacular in taste, variety and presentation. Braised pipikaula, gau gee and SPAM & egg musubi to start. The pipikaula was mouth wateringly tender and served atop crisp white onions and slices of jalapeños. The gau gee were fried perfectly; crunchy won ton skins wrapped around juicy shrimp and pork filling. Fresh mung bean sprouts with a spicy chili enhanced black bean sauce complemented the dish. For the main we tried the Adobo Fried Rice and Stuffed Fish. OMG, I am not kidding, they were both unbelievably good. Pork Adobo is a complex and flavorful dish by itself, to blend it with fried rice is a delicious (and filling) combination. The fish was flawlessly cooked; succulent, moist and tender. The "stuffing", a diverse mix of ingredients (linguisa, mushrooms, watercress, tomatoes) somehow all melded well together and complimented the fish perfectly. (Seriously, the fish dish could have been served in a 4 star restaurant. Shout out to the chef!) Wait! Did I mention the bottles of house-made chili-peppah waddah on each table? Very tasty. To finish we had the banana lumpia arranged around a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream topped with something crunchy (sorry, I can't remember what it was) and a little rum (?). A perfect ending with naturally sweet bananas, fried to hot crispy goodness and served with cold ice cream. Yum! The décor is classic tiki style; an eclectic amalgamation of bamboo furniture and wall hangings, tikis, palm fronds, a massive bar and pinball machines(!). The hostess (Yana), server (George), manager (Bee) and bartender (Chris) were all amazingly efficient, warm and welcoming. This is a great place and we plan on returning often! read more

Went there to celebrate at friends 40th Birthday. I checked the menu ahead of time to make sure there was food options for someone who has a nut allergy. Went to our favorite local tiki bar and things have drastically changed. You walked in and a bartender yelled at you "grab a menu and seat yourself, order at the bar!" No hostess to greet you, no waitstaff to serve you. Same great drinks and amazing food luckily. But tables stayed full of dirty dishes all night and standing in line for 20+ min for drinks was unacceptable. Can't even get water. I hated that one person stood in line forever while we all waited. Frustrating. Was told they laid off half the staff by a bartender. Sounds like things are in trouble? Bad part is that this just make the service and overall experience to be half assed. My partner and I went to Kapu Bar to celebrate my 30th birthday. We stated this twice on our reservation via OpenTable. Upon check-in, we were seated at a tiny table squished in between two other tables. We literally had to pull the table out just so I could slide back into the booth seat...that didn't make me feel great (I'm not super skinny!). Not going to lie, sitting at that table wasn't very comfortable for us. We felt like all 3 parties were sitting at the same table and I barely had enough room to take my jacket off while sitting down. Nonetheless, a spot opened up at the bar and we asked the hostess if we could move there. She graciously abided and it was the best decision we made!!!! So much more room and "privacy"!! If you can, sit at the bar or get more people in your reservation so you get a bigger table or one of the private booths. We were served right away at the bar. Noticed the tables did take much longer to get their food and drinks. The Domino is very tasty! Would definitely get that again. Food was decent enough - garlic chicken was the best!!! Crispy pork belly I would pass on. And the fried rice was pretty good. All in all, I would just come for drinks again. Maybe an appetizer or two, but not for dinner. Also I was a bit disappointed that my birthday was forgotten. Yes, we moved spots and no we didn't tell the bartender, so maybe that's our fault. I have high hopes for this establishment. Having a themed (tiki style) bar and eatery is a fun idea. My overwhelming issue is that it lacks a pure direction. It is a tropical drink bar, that is for sure, but it makes an unwritten statement as being an eatery. There are choices, but they are over priced, for the amount you are not given. We started with the poke nachos, well, I believe there are more chips in a lunch sized bag, then there are on the plate. You can also purchase a full meal anywhere else for the same price. For a place that just recently opened, the staff are on point and really working. The drinks are like that of a Hawaiian resort and they pack a punch. The food. Wow! The flavors are just immense and truly outstanding. The lechon was tender with that beloved crispy crackling bit of skin. Poke Nachos were the perfect munch for just about any occasion. But......there was one drawback. The portions. If you're going to put nachos on the menu....I dont care what kind.....they had better come correct. 4 1/2 chips on a plate with a couple pieces of Ahi is not...I repeat....NOT nachos. The portion sizes for everything are pretty much jaw dropping.....and not in a good way. This is a great place for starting or ending your evening. I hope they continue to thrive. Just fix your ridiculous portions or food prices. I would also suggest making a reservation instead of just showing up.
