OK. To the point.... Ambiance....f*cking amazing! This area needs a good place like this. Something fresh and new. Beautiful place. For a place that just recently opened, the staff are on point and really working. The drinks are like that of a Hawaiian resort and they pack a punch. The food. Wow! The flavors are just immense and truly outstanding. The lechon was tender with that beloved crispy crackling bit of skin. Poke Nachos were the perfect munch for just about any occasion. But......there was one drawback. The portions. If you're going to put nachos on the menu....I dont care what kind.....they had better come correct. 4 1/2 chips on a plate with a couple pieces of Ahi is not...I repeat....NOT nachos. The portion sizes for everything are pretty much jaw dropping.....and not in a good way. This is a great place for starting or ending your evening. I hope they continue to thrive. Just fix your ridiculous portions or food prices. I would also suggest making a reservation instead of just showing up. We have been waiting for this place to open and are so excited that the time has finally come! We couldn't wait, so of course we went opening night (and it was well worth it!). We were waiting for a bit at the door and the security guards were so friendly and fun to talk to. When it was finally our turn, we were blown away by all of the decor. You can see the love for tiki and all of the hard work put into this place. We were sat at the bar and had a blast. The bartender, Ashley, was freaking hilarious! They were super busy because it was opening night, but you could tell that everyone was having a great time. We ordered 2 rounds of drinks and they were so yummy! I ordered the salad with the ahi tuna and my boyfriend got the chicken. Very tasty! We bought 2 mugs, but we will definitely have to go back to get the mai tai glasses (they are adorable). We cannot wait to go back. We had so much fun! *They have hidden plastic lizards everywhere, and I literally couldn't stop laughing when I noticed the lizard watching me go to the bathroom. read more

What a great place for a drink and a bite! The decor was total tiki. They have a LOT of tropical cocktails. We had several! The service was excellent. We had the veggie bowl and steamed rice. Both excellent! My only beef was with the crushed ice in the drinks. Way too much ice and too little drink. Having said that, I would still recommend it for the experience. But the media hypes up Kapu's food, which is tasty, but expectations are diminished when presented with the menu, styled à la chain-restaurant. Menu pricing at Kapu Bar is ... random? Several reviews here note the $24 Poke Nachos have only 6 actual actual chips. It is a disappointment when the item is served, one that is not outweighed by the fact that they taste good. Let's be real: Nachos are for sharing, and this isn't enough even for two people. The ahi salad and the short ribs are $18, by comparison. The chicken, fried rice, pork belly, and fried noodles pricing are equally nonsensical. Go to Kapu for drinks, but to one of Petaluma's fantastic downtown restaurants for dinner. read more

Not all it's hyped up to be in my humble Hawaiian opinion. Everything was a little overly on the sweet side ( food wise) and not amazing for the money. It was kind of cool in there but just not impressive enough for me after all the rave reviews and inability to get a reservation a few days in advance. Three stars for all their efforts and having foods that are not "bad". The drink was sadly not memorable enough for me to recall its name! Came here a couple of times since they opened and love the atmosphere! The drink we liked was the Domino. The Fink Bomb was not for us. Tasted like straight Malibu Rum. The food were small portions but the poke nachos were pretty good just small. The pork belly was small as well. Their dessert was really good. Loved the mochi taste! They have ran out of the Sesame Chi chi these two times I went. Hopefully they will have it or I might read about it on the reviews if someone is finally able to order it. Service was good! Upon entering we were transported to a far away place. The blackout windows force the guest to immersed into the red light tiki bar. We were quickly ushered to the red room with high top tables and a few pinball machines. We sat directly under the heater- it was blowing hot air the whole time we were there. The menu- made me mad. I lived in Hawaii for years, and was looking forward to some delicious food. Nothing on this menu was recognizable to me. We ordered pork fried rice- way too salty. We couldn't see it because the place is so dark and red but the flavors were singular- salt. We had the crispy chicken- terrible- served with an eggy mayonnaise? Why!? Then we had the sautéed veggies - swimming in soy sauce. Meh. This is a BAR not an eating establishment. Someone should actually be trained in Polynesian food- this was not. It was embarrassing and I was upset by it- I'm never going back. read more

The ambiance is fantastic! The music is great, and the staff was very friendly and professional. I think they did a really great job with the decor, and you can tell that they paid attention to detail. The food was delicious. I was skeptical about the Mac and Potatoe Salad with Cilantro, but I wasn't able to taste it (I personally dislike cilantro) and it was actually really good! Thank you to the manager who pushed me to take a chance on it! With all this said, the price point is extremely high for what you get. The Poke Nachos, although delicious, included maybe 4-5 chips, and 6-8 pieces of poke (not large pieces either) for $24. Maybe increase the amount of chips and poke, or lower that price point? All in all, it was a great place to get a drink and chat with friends. It won't, however, be a place that I can visit often unless changes are made to make the food worth the price! I guess I should give this 4 or 5 stars for the the fact it's called Kapu BAR and not restaurant but I can't get over the prices of the food. OMG. Small sharing appetizer/bite style portions for $20 and $24??? I'm not sure how they are getting away with this. 4 of us had 4 drinks (all really good BTW) and shared 5 items. We left and went to another restaurant to eat. We spent $200 with tip and had apps. I get the place is trendy and kitchy but the food program needs a re look. The garlic chicken was really good but 5 small nuggets for $20? The poke nachos were 6 half wonton skins fried with frozen cubes of seasoned ahi. The aioli was dropped on radish slices. Underseasoned dish and small for $24. Ok now what really was a joke was the lechon. 4 slices of pork belly with a few cherry tomato halves. Get ready. $20? Would you pay $20 for 2 strips or 4 strips of bacon? Pork belly is one of the cheapest cuts of pork. You can order a 10 oz pork chop in many restaurants for under $30 with mash and veg. To sum it up go for a drink but please don't go hungry and pay their ridiculous prices. Owners you should be ashamed of yourselves for charging what you are. Cost out your your menu. You're running a 10% FC on many dishes. That is gauging. read more

I absolutely love this place from start to finish. The atmosphere is so much fun and perfectly done. You feel as if you escape into another place where every single detail was well thought out. Every server we came into contact with was incredibly friendly! I know most would come here for the drinks, and I hear they are amazing. But I came here to check out the food and I was pleasantly surprised by the explosion of flavors! I can't stop thinking about the garlic chicken (make it spicy!), the noodles, the stuffed fish and house salad. Seriously incredible! I can't wait to return! My one wish, bigger portion sizes! I normally wouldn't say that in this country but these portion sizes are small! If they did a bigger portion of the garlic chicken over rice, I would give them all my money! Go visit this place! We stopped in for lunch this past Saturday after eagerly awaiting the opening. The theming is super immersive with a lot of distinct areas throughout the bar. Our waiter was kind, knowledgeable and enthusiastic--she brought our drinks to us as we were walking around looking at all of the decor. The drink selection of classic tiki cocktails is comprehensive and great quality. All the food we ordered was unique and delicious. Highlights were the garlic chicken and fried rice. The decor is beautiful, and fun, the food was tasty and the drinks were strong and oh soo good. The waiter we had was so nice and attentive when stepping us through the drink and provisions menu. Came here with friends on a Saturday night and it was very disappointing. We were told that there was no table service so you had to grab your own menus, sit where ever you'd like, but order at the bar when ready. We decided to sit at the bar to make it easier. There were 3 people behind the bar and it took 5 minutes to get waters. Meanwhile one of them immediately greeted this group that just walked in the door. Told them what the deal was that night and even told them the food specials. We weren't told the food specials or even acknowledged for another 10 minutes after we got our waters. I had to ask one of the servers behind the bar to order drinks. We had parties on both sides of us and they were asked how they're doing and what they need but not us. We decided to ask for the check and leave. All in all, the environment and the servers were not welcoming, also the drinks were 2/10 at best. They tasted premade. Will not be returning. read more

Unfortunately I had an awful experience here. The host and owner were not just unfriendly but flat at rude, disorganized and lacked basic hospitality and accountability. Their walk in policy is confusing and uncommon. Basically they say if you leave the waiting area for any amount of time your axed from the wait list. This place is freaking Amazing! I can't believe it is in Petaluma. Finally went last night and they had a fundraiser for the residents of Maui which was cool to begin with. The atmosphere is surreal. It's like soemthing from SF. Hard to believe it's in our little town. I can't wait to try one of the booths next time but we had a table near the bar. I had read online that some people found it loud but I disagree. It was perfectly fine and a fantastic date night. I had two drinks, a banana daquir and pina colada. Both were stellar. Their staff were super friendly too. Not only was the waitress super nice as she came over and said "I'm sorry it took so long" but we were still reading the menu so it was not long at all! Very sweet woman. The person who brought out our food was super nice too! She complimented both my partner and I's shirts (we were dressed pretty nice in some Gucci and Louis so they know their style!) shouldn't be assuming pronouns but besides the point, brought out some amazing food. Everything from the salad to the ice cream was amazing. We literally could not stop talking about how good the food was. I know this is kinda a bar-ish place but damn! That food was so good. The oysters were stunning. The pork was melt in your mouth good. My partner has chicken and it was fantastic. The ice cream was super unique. I don't usually rave about a place but this was so good. Petaluma needs places like this! As much as I love our Italian and Mexican food it is so nice to have something that stands out and is different. Please give this place a try if you want that. An amazing meal that isn't just ordinary. I know I got the special chefs menu for the fundraiser which isn't available normally but I can't wait to go back and try the typical menu finds. I loved the sound of the nachos and several other items. We left so full (and me kind of drunk!) I am usually the guy that writes when I get a bad experience but this place is sooooooo good I want to write about how amazing it was. And I was literally just there a few hours ago. I wasn't sure what to expect from this tiki bar in Petaluma, but I can safely say my expectations were exceeded. Every dish was delicious, including the lechón, garlic chicken and poke nachos. Though the menu was not extensive we all felt well fed in the end. Service was prompt and friendly. The cocktails were up to snuff and well presented. I ordered an "El Presidente" and a "Fog Cutter", both delicious and not overly sweet, which can be a problem with tiki drinks. My wife loved her "Missionary's Downfall." The decor was appropriately tiki, with bamboo, palm fronds and Polynesian masks everywhere. They even had a side room off the bar with four vintage pinball machines. Unfortunately, our 9-year-old was kicked out of the pinball room, which was reserved for drinking age customers only. Do yourself a favor and go to Forbidden Island in Alameda or Trader Vic's in Emeryville, you know, somewhere you can get a big tiki drink and a proper meal for a normal price! I wanted to love Kapu because Bamboo Ben Bassham did an amazing job with the decor. I love Tiki bars, but this isn't a bar if you can't go in for a drink without a reservation, and I love Tiki restaurants, but the appetizer menu doesn't make this place a restaurant either. I also love pinball machines, but they should be free play if you have to interrupt busy bartenders for change. And then when Flash Gordon ate my quarters, I was too embarrassed to ask the staff for help. I mean, the staff was friendly, but much too stressed out. Service was super speedy quick and with the small portions of food and drink we were done within 30 minutes. Not a relaxing experience... basically, the opposite of tiki culture. read more
