OK, I have to admit---this review is REALLY tough to write because I can't figure out which of Kapu's services I love best! Allow me to split up my 2+ years of return business by category: 1. THREADING: Kapu is a perfectionist, and it shows most in her eyebrow shaping. While her facial threading work is clean, quick and thorough, Her brow shaping is where her talent REALLY shines through. I leave her chair with brows that are beautifully shaped, remarkably polished and, most importantly, customized to flatter my facial features. Kapu's work will leave your eyes looking bright, beautiful and expressive. This is star-quality work, as the celebs who've been her threading clients already know. 2. HAIR COLOR: Kapu isn't merely a color genius. I'd say that hair coloring is her super-power. Sure, she's got the chops (she's a Redken Educator, after all...) but she's also got an artist's eye when it comes to determining the subtleties of hue, shade and placement as it applies to you as an INDIVIDUAL. I could also tell you a story about the time she performed one of the most difficult color corrections I've ever had executed on my self-botched highlights/patchy base color (SHE DID NOT CREATE THE NIGHTMARE, I TRIED TO DYE MY OWN HAIR). Her color-corrective work is immaculate, perfect, and literally much better than I'd even hoped for.... 3. STYLING: Her cuts are gorgeous, precise and they grow out beautifully. She's got a knack for keeping me on-trend without making me look too "cookie-cutter" or "fashion victim" The mark of a quality style, to me, is how well it holds up on days when I don't heat style it. Kapu's cut still falls beautifully and looks phenomenal. Air-dried is actually a viable look for me with one of her styles.... 4. PRICING: More than fair for what you get. Seriously. How this woman isn't a vaunted celeb-stylist writing articles in every fashion-rag, I'll never know. I can tell you that I've sampled the work of some the industry's heavyweights and Kapu's work is equal to (often surpassing) theirs---all without a 12-week wait list or a four-figure price tag. read more

I absolutely adore Kapuree - as a hairdresser and as a person! She is so skilled at her craft, and a super funny, nice and friendly person as well. My first appointment with Kapu was in January after having a horrific experience at another salon. She was able to completely transform and fix the mess another stylist created. I just went back in October - that's how amazing she is. My color was vibrant for nine months! I had my color refreshed and toned (ombre on naturally brunette/auburn hair) and a trim and blowdry. I know if I go in and have a question or need some direction, I'll get an honest and educated answer... many people don't care enough to take the time. I recommend Kapu to anyone who asks about my hair, and to anyone who mentions that they need a service done. BLONDES THIS IS YOUR LADY! Fairly new to LA and have been looking for someone who is really good at blonde color. Her pictures dont show a lot of blondes so I was a little nervous, but she did an amazing job! I showed her a picture of the exact look/color I used to have and she did it spot on. SO UNPROFESSIONAL! I was incredibly disappointment in the service I received and deceived by Yelp reviews that suggested this would be a good experience. The visit began with Kapu being nearly 30 minutes late. Fine, it happens, but no apology or anything. I came in for partial highlights a cut that I purchased on Lifebooker. She was clearly not happy about providing services to Lifebooker customers and clearly told me that she makes absolutely no money from this. My highlights and cut took nearly 3 hours, which for partial, on medium length hair is really, really long. She tried to up-sell me to purchase a toner for an additional $40, which I have never had or needed in my hair before. When I said I didn't think I needed it, she made me feel really uncomfortable. Here come the biggest problem though - my highlights were completely uneven on the right and left, with roots showing ALOT. On the right side of my head there was nearly 3/4 of an inch of roots and on the left side there is a half and inch to a quarter, and it looks really, really obvious that it's not balanced. The haircut, while not bad, has pieces of hair that are also not cut evenly and stick out at the bottom, to the point that I had to cut them myself on the right side. I get it, stylists can make mistakes, so I texted and called her to ask nicely if she can just fix a bit. She completely ignored me. I stopped back by the salon and she basically kicked me out. She said she was busy with other people and refused to even look. She said send me a picture and that was it. I sent a picture and she eventually got back to me with "sory (spelled like that) busy" I contacted Lifebooker and they are having trouble getting in touch with her as well. All I was hoping for was to have her do a really quick fix on the most obvious area - the part. I would say - BE CAREFUL. She does not care about her customers and does not like people from Lifebooker at all. read more

Kalpana is the best! I recently moved to LA and was in need of a new hairstylist and was so lucky to find Kalpana! She cut over eight inches off my hair and took my hair from brown to blonde perfectly!! I will always go to her for cuts and color. Kapu is a MASTER at natural, sunkissed highlights. I came in for ecaille highlights, cut and color and loved the results. The final color was so flattering and even though she lightened my hair, when I left it felt much healthier, not over-processed at all! The tone was perfect and so well-blended. She definitely understands the art of subtlety when it comes to hair. My hair was very damaged before I came in, but I wanted to keep the length so she expertly cut my layers, still managing to keep the length pretty long. She was also very sweet and lovely to talk to. Overall, I think she's phenomenal as a hair dresser, however I didn't give 5 stars because: 1 - my hair took 4.5 hours... which she explained was because my hair wasn't lifting properly since I've used box dyes in the past. So, I do appreciate that she wanted to make sure it was done correctly, but this seemed too long. 2 - When I've gotten highlights in the past, usually this includes the price of a toner, but this was an additional charge. Also, not her fault, but be advised parking in their building is expensive. It ended up being $19.50 with validation! read more

I honestly wanted to give Kapuree a 5 star, but there were just a few things that I didn't really appreciate. I purchased a living social deal for an ombre, cut and blow out. I actually called moments before making my purchase to ensure that she would have time to take me in as a client two weeks later on a Saturday at 2:30p.m. She agreed so I made my appointment and purchase at the same time. I received a phone call a couple of days before saying that she forgot that she had another appointment and that she needed to move mine to a different time. Automatically I felt discouraged to even go to the appointment, because I felt like I was going to be mistreated or given half the time and attention that I would receive if I were a full paying customer. Finally we agreed at 4:30pm the same day. The day of my appointment she sent me a message asking if I could come in earlier, because her 2:30 appointment had cancelled. I was really upset, because I had woken up literally at sunrise so that I could fit in everything I had to do throughout the day. I really had low expectations when I arrived at the appointment. Turns out she was a really kind person to talk to. I enjoyed the entire hair appointment laughing and talking with Kapuree. The entire procedure took around 2 hours to complete. I ended up paying an additional $30 for her to add the toner in. I realized a few colors ago how wrong one's hair can go when trying to skip out on toner when coloring. When she finished I noticed that the right side of my head was more blonde than the left. She told me my hair would lighten out over two weeks time which is why I decided to wait two weeks before writing this review. My hair actually looks exactly the same as when I left the salon (as far as the color). Her haircut which I loved more the day that she cut it, I've come to realize is kind of blunt and should have been worked through a little more. Although the look I have from her is not terrible, it isn't amazing - and I really wish the hair would have lightened a little like she said it would. Overall, my experience was OK. My review is for haircut by Kapuree. I got a haircut 3 months back, and not a single day passes, when I dont curse it. she gave me the worst haircut of my life. When I say worst, I mean the WORST ever (and I have had my share of bad haircuts). I asked for V-shaped short layers, and even showed a picture. And she did not not ONE SINGLE THING that I asked. My hair has no layers (forget that I was so particular about short layers instead of long layers), is not v-shaped (it is infact straight cut, the shape that I hate the most). And to top it all, she cut 3 inches off my hair, without asking me, when I asked her to only trim it. In the end, it looked nothing like a layered cut, more of a mushroom cut. I burst out crying after I left from the salon. I would give her a negative infinity stars if I could. For the past 3 months, I have been trying tips and tricks to grow it out fast. I haven't been able to go to any other salon because it is so short now. For those who love long hair and are trying to grow out, you can imagine how big of a heartbreak this is. If I have to change a thing in the past, I would go back to the day I went to Kapuree, and erase that salon visit. Please save yourself and run in the other direction!!! Still on the way to recovery. What amazed me the most was Kalpana's knowledge of hair: she knew exactly what would and wouldn't work with my type of hair, what I had done to it, even the type of hairstylist who has been cutting my hair. I came in hoping to jump on the ombre trend ($65 deal on Lifebooker) and came equipped with a million photos of hot celebs with gorgeous hair. Although I was disappointed at first when Kalpana said it would be very hard for mine to turn that light, she made another suggestion based on my hair type to best match my request (I paid $40? extra for toner). I loved how my hair turned out- time was not a factor for her and she took every little second to make sure it would turn out perfect. On top of gorgeous hair I also had a really great conversation; she was very friendly and easy to talk to. I got my eyebrows threaded here and had gotten many compliments on them. Literally one of the best blonde highlight experts you'll find in LA. You will love Kalpana at Kapuree ; she takes the time to listen to what you need and is absolutely incredible. She fit me into the schedule with no problem at short notice (getting there at 9am which was awesome as so many hair stylists don't start until after 10) and was utterly friendly and professional - I haven't had blonde so well matched and 'lifted' in years. She is amazing and also does an array of services including threading. The salon is part of Salon Republic, really convenient location and nice space. I was visiting from Toronto and I read great reviews on yelp so I thought I would check her out. First of all what a NICE genuinely NICE person!!! My hair looks so fantastic - if you look closely you can see the thin bands of honey color she weaved through...looks so natural....I have never had so many compliments... I bought a Groupon Now for eyebrow threading after reading all her rave reviews. I looked up her website and saw that they take walk-ins, so I showed up right when they opened, figuring I'd go before it got too busy. She told me that they didn't accept walk-ins for Groupon and told me to come back in half hour while she did someone's hair (who had an appointment, so fair enough). But why do places offer Groupons if they're then going to treat you like second class citizens?? She did end up squeezing me in after I waited 45 mins. The threading was just ok. One word Amazing! Kapu is awesome. I initially bought a Lifebooker deal for a ombre color, but ended up aslo getting additional root color, highlights and a hair cut. I was able to book my appointment immediately, and ended up spending about 6 hours getting my hair done b/c my color needed some serious repair, she really took the time to get it right, and was so patient and kind. She is totally up to date on current hair trends, what looks good, etc..The end result was fantastic and I will definitely be going back to her. One little text led to another great experience with Kapu! She texted me this afternoon, thanking me for my previous Yelp review. Last time I saw her, I told her I was in dire need of a trim (it had been over six months, which is the longest I've ever gone without a cut), and she told me to let her know when I was ready for some chopping. Today, I decided to go in for that trim, and she completely revamped my hair and made me feel like a new woman! I showed her pictures of what I was working towards and she molded and shaped my hair without chopping the length, which is what I've experienced in the past. Pros: Eyebrow threading, you can get it done while waiting for your hair to set from another salon or hers! She kindly fixed an issue on a return visit that was not her fault but needed to be redone Cons: I asked for and paid for a dramatic balayage, showing photos, and ended up with a few afterthought-looking foil highlights. While it was nice that she fixed the issue mentioned above, I wasn't expecting to be downgraded. I don't know how all these things work, so I didn't realize until my hair dried that it was way less done than we originally agreed on. read more

I tend to go to her salon looking like a werewolf and leaving like a supermodel. As an Indian, I've been to countless threading salons, but Kapuree is hands-down the best. My mother even thinks she does a good job, which goes a long way if you know anything about Indian moms and their general discontent for any decision their children make. She is a little more expensive than other threading salons, but she really knows how to bring out the best in your features. She's gorgeous, too, which is a testament in and of itself of her threading prowess! Overall, Kapuree is worth the money. She has changed my perspective on hairdressers 100% She is absolutely amazing. A couple months prior I had the worse experience with my hair at Salon TRU (I had to go back two times to get it corrected), so I was extremely hesitant and worried about trying a new place with another lifebooker. I did my research on her, but was still not fully sold since most of her reviews were on threading (i wanted to lighten my hair with ombre). So I called in advanced and made my appointment with her two days ahead. What I appreciated the most was that she said that I could email her pictures ahead of time of exactly I wanted to get done. That alone speaks volumes,she is obviously going to be doing her research ahead of time, taking time out of her day to make sure she can achieve what her clients want. I finally went in (super nervous not knowing what to expect) and she asked me exactly what I wanted and asked me questions about every detail of how I wanted the ombre colored. She didn't just do a generic "ombre technique" to save her time, she actually customized it to my own liking. My hair took such a long time but she didn't take any short cuts, she did everything the right way. My hair is very difficult to deal with but she was able to get the ombre color that I wanted without looking brassy or orange (i have asian hair). There are so many great things about Kapuree that she will definitely be my hairdresser from now on.
