At first glance, you might question why a chicken shawarma plate costs $13, but when you feel the weight of the carton, you realize that the mountain of chicken and rice before you is well worth it. The chicken is tender and seasoned well, but it's nothing spectacular. You can find better chicken elsewhere. What makes my mouth water is the rice. To be frank, I love rice, regardless of whether it's basmati, jasmine, short grain, or long grain; but I have to eat it with something. Karam's rice is delicious on a completely different scale. It is fluffy, cooked to the perfect moisture, and full of flavor. I actually think that the rice gives the chicken more flavor, rather than the other way around. In a world where gyros are a dime a dozen Karam brings some unique flavor to the mix. The main difference seems to be that many gyro spots in NYC are Turkish and Karam is Lebanese and therefore uses a different style and different spices. I have had both the chicken and the meat gyros and both were fantastic. I usually order to go but they do have sitting space although a bit tight. The chicken over rice with pita bread tasted pretty good. Instead of the chicken being chopped up completely, you can still see the pieces of chicken. It is more expensive than the halal you get from the carts, but I like the fact that you can see the pieces of chicken. As for the pastry, I don't know what it is called, but it was expensive ($1 for a piece) and it tasted mediocre. It is basically puff pastry with lots of sugar inside. After hearing about the hype of this place, i decided to try the mixed Sharma sandwich, and it is definitely not what i expected. All though the meat inside the sandwich was good, there was other vegetables put into the sandwich that made the whole taste absolutely weird. I believe they used radish, which was rather very sweet. Other than that the sandwich was okay. Upon entering the place, there was a big line so expect to wait about 15-30 minutes in line just to place your order, and about 5-10 minutes to pick up your order. One good thing about this place is that they do have a good amount of staff working and helping each other to make the food, and the staff are friendly. Besides the staff, the food is not all what i had expected from the reviews i had read earlier. I have yet to try more items from their menu, but i am not sure what to expect as per taste. read more

Middle eastern food happens to be my favorite type of food and I have eaten a lot of it all over and there is yet a restaurant to compete with karam's shawarma. The restaurant proudly decorates it's wall with articles they have been featured in praising their shawarma. Their chicken is cooked to perfection and has a crisp on the outside. The pita is filled with tomato, pickled jicama, onions, and fresh parsley. The sauce which is a Lebanese style garlic sauce is to die for!! It's thick and creamy almost like a yogurt and has the most powerful garlic taste I have ever tasted. However when the chicken is cooked they put the garlic sauce in with it which allows it to melt into the meat. This creates a delicious garlicky coat on the meat. The restaurant itself is small and cute and the staff is polite. I enjoy that they always have Arabic music playing in the restaurant, it adds to the feel. Though they got my order wrong I was still pleasantly suprised by the food. The half a chicken was succulent and filling for a mere 6 dollars. It came with pita bread, yogurt salad, and radishes . A few years ago I would have given 5 stars easy. But something changed he last year or two, it's not as good as it used to be. Karam was my go-to place whenever I needed a shwarma fix. They made the best, and I do mean the best shwarma in the world! Not even Barbar on Hamra Street in downtown Beirut beat them. Although they are very good, they were always second best in my book. The meat shwarma used to be the best, but the last couple of times I tried it, there was too much sauce, and the sauce just off, tasted watered down. I heard this place changed ownership, that could explain things if the new owners don't have all the good recipes. At least the other stuff they have is still good. Love their shrimp pies, and zaatar bread! Their rotisserie chicken is awesome, just the way I like it Lebanese style with the garlic sauce and pickles. Also, they used lots of iceberg lettuce, bleh. The pickled turnip was a nice touch though. The zataar was my favorite thing we ordered. The owners let us order at the counter and eat at a table without charging us until we were finished which was nice of them. It's an honor system with drinks out of the cooler. This tiny Lebanese gem offers a sensational chicken shawarma wrap. I have also tried their chicken liver and beef brain (yes, brain!) wraps which were delicious as well. The foundation of ingredients for their sandwiches is the same throughout : soft flatbread, herbs,spices, the white sauce, pickled vegetables. The pickled veggies work very well to provide just the right acidic balance to the sandwich. Do yourself a favor and have mints on hand as the garlic overload will definitely hinder any potential contact with another fellow human being for some time to come. I would never write a bad review but last night I was starving and the treatment I got was extremely upsetting coming from a business I've ate from since I was a kid! Beware of the pale big headed arrogant worker. He sat there holding a full conversation for solid minutes while I waited patiently to order. When he wasn't talking he was stuffing his face with food. I still remained patient even after I said HELLO. A man walks in and he takes his order right away. I stormed out FUMING. Most of the food here is good and I don't have a lot of complaints. My issue is with the outrageous prices and lack of customer service. For the amount they charge, Karam should have friendly staff and at least enough room to comfortably fit a crowd. Unfortunately, they have neither of these things. I always leave feeling ripped off and a little annoyed by the guys behind the counter. But i like the food so I come back when i don't feel like cooking at home or am nearby. They don't need to because they're going to get a lot of business anyway, based on the large volume of foot traffic in the area. Karam, however, is a fantastic spot for Middle Eastern food. So I was eager to review this place after coming here for a number of years. I live not too far from this great Middle-Eastern joint. One of my friends introducted me to Karam and I love the food there; no complaints about it. Everything there is really good and this was also the place where I developed my love for middle-eastern food. Karam was featured in some magazine for one of the best middle-eastern joints in NYC and I would totally agree with that review. You have to try the Shwarma there, its really big and once you eat it, you will be full for a good 5 hours. They say the best advertising is word-of-mouth and I have definetly been spreading the word about this place to anyone who decides to get a good place to eat in Bay Ridge. Karam always has a few customers in it and always has business whether its early morning, its raining, or its an afternoon. Five stars to Karam! read more
