Loved this little restaurant! This was a lunch stop for us in the way back home from a vacation in Maine. The staff was incredibly friendly. It was a late lunch (around 2pm) so it was quiet and we were the only ones in the restaurant. The garlic fried rice was amazing!! Highly recommend that and the egg rolls. Yum!!! Went here with a large group over the weekend. The food is simple and well executed for the most part. (Some dishes lacked flavor while others were over-salted like the glass noodle dish). Overall though the grilled meat, chicken and fish dishes are seasoned well with sweet, sour and rich sauces and condiments to make for homey dishes over white rice that one not so familiar with Filipino food would liken to a blend of Vietnamese and Thai. Same for the fried dishes like the empanadas and spring rolls. Crispy and tasty fillings with vinegar and chili sc like dipping sauces. Service can be a bit confusing. After placing a tables order at a counter you're not exactly sure what to ask for versus what to obtain at the help yourself station. Not a major detraction by any means. The staff is very friendly and accommodating and the assortment of beers and wine is better than what you'd expect and the pricing of the meal is very reasonable. That said, how this place makes any list of national acclaim is a real head scratcher in my humble globetrotting opinion. I'm not sure what hallucinogens were in play when the Esquire author bestowed the #19 ranking of best spots in the US. This is simply prepared food with no earth shattering techniques or flavor profiles. I did not have one OMG bite of food that caused me to think, that's why this place is special and I can't wait to come back. And I wonder if they were ever going for such heights. There are ethnic places doing similar caliber food across the country with little or no acclaim (albeit not Filipino which is finally starting to break ground). But why this place I wondered after sampling most of the menu. My guess is the author is a local of this friendly establishment and felt the under represented cuisine deserved a shout out and threw them a bone. Like a dinosaur bone. And if I lived closer I'd probably put it on the rotation albeit with realistic expectations. This is a solid neighborhood place but definitely not one of the best in the country nor a destination restaurant. read more

Fantastic food and service! I finally had the chance to eat at Karenderya. If I could give them 10 stars I would. I had the fried chicken sandwich with an egg on top and a side of their amazing garlic fried rice. The servings were huge. The flavor of both the sandwich and rice were out of this world. When you walk in the door the aromas coming out of the kitchen make you want to try everything. The service was fast and friendly. Everyone must try this place. They serve excellent food here that will hit the spot. I've ordered their vegetable rice bowl and have never been less than perfectly satisfied. If they offer you garlic rice, GET IT!! Their menu is fantastic and they always have great specials. We also like the peanut tofu appetizer. My boyfriend has gotten their chicken sandwich, longganisa sandwich, and the beef sandwich, and he has enjoyed all three immensely. They also have a variety of specials on their board that sound very delicious as well. I like the way the restaurant is set up, where you order at the counter, grab your supplies from the shelf, and pick a seat. A family owned, casual dinner service where you order up front and they bring the food to you. The food is really made with love and care for the culture even though it's "modernized" Filipino food set at a reasonable price. Meat is melt in your mouth, rice cooked perfectly, and has options for vegetarians too! Try everything, especially the appetizers you won't regret it. They regularly have specials so when they do try them before they're gone! Great for families (they even have a cute little corner for kids) and parties. Drop by and visit, take outs are great too. Oh! And when you take out, I'm not sure but someone who works there three or four times every week adds little drawings and sayings on the take out bags, my kids adore it! It's the little things lol! Amazing and unique. The set up is not your regular restaurant you walk in pick a table and go to the counter and order. Grab your plates and utensils when your food is ready they bring it out or you pick it up. We had lumpia and duck empanadas just perfectly done and all made in house we sat at the bar and drank the suggested beer from the Philippines there is no hard liquor just beer and wine. Then we had two pork dishes one with coconut that was like braised it was just excellent and my wife had the pork belly with garlic fried rice. Not what we expected but waaaaayyyyyy better! My friend and I saw an add about this restaurant. We wanted to try it. Food was below average and service was ehhh. My friend and I ordered lumpia Shanghai, pork adobo bowl and pork sinigang. First our order of shanghai didn't come till after we mentioned to them that our order didn't come. And then later the waiter said did you want a second order? We said we never received our first so why would we order a second one. I ordered the sinigang. The broth was not sour enough. And when you have sinigang. It's has to be sour. It tasted watered down. When I get sinigang at other places I have never had issues with not finishing the broth. This one had a sandy grainy feel. I think they didn't rinse out the bak choy properly. Then my friend ordered the pork belly adobo. He said his didn't taste like it was marinated. It looked like they pan fried the pork belly then added some soy sauce and a sprinkle of vinegar. So it looks like a glazed pork belly with the look of adobo. Simple Adobo is normally cooked in soy sauce and vinegar and when served would have a bit of sauce to make the rice color change. There wasn't any because it was not cooked traditionally. And he said when he bit into the pork belly. It had no flavor in the meat. Finally our lumpia Shanghai came. Looked good. But dipping sauce was not the traditional sweet sauce. They gave us spicy banana ketchup. Why would you just serve someone something spicy? What happened if me or my friend was allergic to spicy food. Luckily we was not. They should have asked if it was ok to serve us the spicy sauce. But I have never been served with spicy sauce with my lumpia Shanghai. Last but not least. The water. I was really disgusted by the water. The water they give your bring to your table is in this resealable clear glass bottle. I poured water into my glass. Then my friend noticed there was shit floating in the water. I was like nah can't be man. Don't say that. I said it might just be the bubbles after I poured the water. Buttttt we waited till the water settled. And man there was really shit floating inside that glass bottle of water. Luckily I also had a canned drink and he had a bottled drink. We was really disgusted with the water. We believe if that's filtered water shit shouldn't be floating around in that bottle. But what we think is that they don't rinse the bottle whenever they refill the bottles. We read the online review in Esquire that was a rave--and we wanted to try it. Disappointing. I ordered a shrimp and rice noodles dish which was bland and featureless. Lynn had better luck with the milk-fish. (Her soy allergy eliminated about 90% of the menu.) No waiters. You order your food at the counter; get your own napkins, etc. which gives the place a fast-food feel. We wanted to praise a local place with an original menu, but we walked out thinking it would be unlikely we'd return. Perhaps you will have better luck with your choices. read more

I am a die hard foodie and I would never eat here again, they are disgustingly rude and have no idea how to service customers, they don't pick up the phone while open, the person who finally picke duo treated me like he was bothered and didn't want to take my order. 45 minutes later the same rude person asks all his customers to wait while he steps away and eats and came back chewing with a greasy mouth while people are waiting to order or pick up. And low and behold I ask for my order and the lazy rude ,person never placed my order , the kitchen help comes out because I asked the rude person if he was joking with me. I waited 45 minutes. The kitchen guy says well I'm sorry so would you like to place an order now ? I said why would I you are so rude and act like it's ok to have people wait for 4r minutes. I left called the owner who became defensive when I asked who I was speaking to , he relaxed after I told him how I was treated and he says oh my so sorry I hope you can come back another day !!!!
