I ordered 5 ham croquettes and I got 1 ham croquette and the rest were chicken. That is unacceptable. You don't know if the person is allergic to chicken and eats the croquette thinking it's ham. Aside of that all 5 croquettes were COLD. read more

When pondering the qualitative values of a good bakery, what criteria is most important? Variety? Of course, you want a wide assortment of pastries, cakes, and desserts to choose from. Check. Karla has all that. The guava cake is scrumptious. The flaky crusts melts delicately into your mouth followed by that sinful taste of fruit compote. But they also have a variety of cakes, other hot pastries, and a showcase full of decadent desserts that all cry out, "Eat me!" In addition to sweets, Karla sells empanadas, sandwiches, and lunch plates. The empanadas weren't bad but they weren't the best I've ever had either. Decent by all standards. Coffee? Karla has that. You can enjoy a plain Cuban coffee for fifty cents or indulge and have a cortadito (with or without evaporated milk) for under a couple bucks. I opted for the coffee with evaporated milk. Although I ordered a large, it was clearly a small cup. What would a small would look like? Ummm... But given the price, I really couldn't complain. Seating? Check. There are several tables to enjoy your goodies. They weren't cleaned on a regular basis but I don't mind taking a napkin and cleaning it off myself. Parking? Check. Although it is a busy little strip mall, there is a parking lot which is helpful given that parking in Miami is a challenge. Value? Definitely. Decent prices that don't make you feel like Jack the Ripper has been through your wallet. Hours? Karla Bakery is open 24 hours so that is a huge plus because you never know when you'll have a craving for a guava bake and cafe con leche. Customer Service? Not so much. Some staff are okay while others are quite rude especially if you don't speak Spanish. Upon ordering the cafe con leche evaporado, we were asked "light or dark"? Honestly, it's a not a question you expect and it was hard to understand the words. We assumed the staff person asked small or large. She asked again, "light or dark" and started to get upset. There's no need for that. It's hard to hear and we clearly did not speak the language but to work in customer service, you have to be patient. Oh well. We got it all squared away but it made the experience feel lacking. Overall, I'd come back. After all, how many Cuban pastry shops are open 24 hours?? But next time, I'll practice my Spanish beforehand. read more

This place is everything you want in a Cuban bakery. The pastelitos are perfectly flakey and they're not skimpy on the filling. If you're looking for something to indulge in go for the pizza pastel, it's probably the best thing on the menu, but they're always sold out. About to embark on a double shift starting at 5:30 AM. One good thing about Karla's is that they're open 24 hours. I waited my turn I line and ordered a Lg. cafe con leche evaporada (much richer and more delicious than regular milk) and a tostada xtra butter. Also for my break I got a pastelito de carne (meat) and guyaba (guava). The service was EXTREMELY slow and I was in a bit of a hurry. I don't understand my it took so long if the pastelitos are already made and the toast goes in a plancha.... 5 minutes top, but it took them 15 minutes to get my order to me. The bakery is large and very clean. There was about 6 other people there... They were still intoxicated from the club rambling on very loudly. And the ladies behind the counters are a little chusmita as we like to say here in Miami. I was not happy with the tostada because it was not authentic at all... They did come through with the extra butter as I asked. My cafe con leche was delicious though I had to add a little bit of sugar. I did not eat the pastelitos and gave them to a co-worker. I probably will only return if i have to work another double shift and only because they are the only ones open. I know what to order and what not to order. read more

One of the best guayaba (guava) pastelitos in town! If you are turned off by the abundant puff pastry in your Cuban pastelitos, Karla Bakery's pastelitos are all about the filling. Their pastelitos are made with the perfect amount of pastry and guava so you're getting a good chunk of guava with every bite. I always come to this location because it's close to work and always request the same a toast with ham cheese and egg, last time I came I ordered like that and the guy who took my order did it, so today I ask for the same and they refused to put butter because it's either butter or a omelette sandwich, WTH?! OOh yes! This is definitely my go-to for Cuban pastries when I am in the area and am dying for coffee or snacks. I love that Karla's is open 24/7 and that they offer free coffee when it's late (maybe after midnight?)! I mean, nothing beats Cuban coffee when you need a jolt of energy. I've only been here late at night so I can't say what Karla's is like during the day. They usually have an adequate selection of croquetas, pastelitos, little cakes, and empanadas on display. Their food menu is also always available. Their space is clean and there's ample seating. This is the place to go for solid croquetas and empanadas - you're not going to question yourself or Karla's once you try their stuff! Their sandwiches are also MASSIVE for the price you get. I'm thankful that they maintain this aspect of Cuban bakeries. It would be so disappointing to get a weakass sandwich lol. Again, their sandwiches are solid and fresh. I wouldn't give a full four stars though because the service is lacking EVERY SINGLE TIME. Many times, I consider if it's because I am clearly not Latin but even when I come here with my Cuban friends, they take forever and a half to get our orders out and they usually mess up one of them. I found the cookie and pastries I tasted to be way too sweet. The only flavor was sugar. I like sweet desserts, but they need to taste like something besides straight up sugar. Karla Bakery is definitely a Miami treasure! I first discovered Karla's while living up in Sunny Isles Beach. I was having a birthday party and, while its a great area to live in, Aventura has NO Cuban flavor anywhere. Sure they have Kosher but Kosher's got nothing on Cuban! lol A quick internet search led me to them and I immediately ordered what EVERY Cuban Kid grows up on when having a birthday party: (50) Ham Croquettes, (50) Guava Pastries, (50) Queso/cheese pastries coated in sugar and a sheet of 50 ham paste "sanguichitos" ( bite size sandwiches, for you non-speakers!). They were a hit and I've been coming back ever since. Growing up in Miami I am not put off by chaotic environments and Hispanics yelling over each other in order to get their fixes. So if you're a gringo remember we're NOT yelling that's just how we talk; so get ready for the experience! Just walk in look for that number wheel, take one & pay attention or they may skip yours! lol Their pastelitos are by far my favorite and with locations open 24 hours you KNOW this night owl foodie calls Karla's Bakery his second ho--WAIT A MINUTE!! Karla! Karla! What were you thinking?! So forget the authentic Cuban bakery experience. The number wheel is gone and replaced with a single file line at the wrong end of a huge column that, when it's packed, blocks your view of the goodies. WTF?! Cubans were NOT meant for order --we strive on CHAOS! Ñoooooo! What ends up happening is you get to the line & have to hope you remembered your entire order cuz you're no longer pointing and picking or it's get back in line again and start all over again. Then you have to wait for them to call your number at the other end of the counter. It's a wading pool of complaining people complaining about the system and how it ISN'T working. There's a sea of Cubanitas just waiting to have that little order pop up to have something to do. They've also been screwed out of their tips since the tips are now collected in a lucite box labeled TIPS by the register that is way easier to ignore than when you're being helped personally. No one seems happy --but the management. Customers are complaining and taking their frustrations out on an under appreciated, poorly paid staff that seem miserable themselves. I now go to Karla's in the middle of the night or any time I'm sure it will be dead to spare me the frustration. Fortunately for my pants i no longer go as much. Anyhow I order from them because I used to love their merengue cakes. This cake was terrible. It had a strong liquor taste. Not sure if it was old or if in fact they put alcohol in it. We recently moved to the neighborhood and we were so glad to find a Cuban bakery so close by. We're having breakfast right now and this tostada Cubana is incredible. Best toast I've had in a long time. It's cheap too! A full breakfast (eggs, toast, and fries), a breakfast sandwich, two pastelitos and two Cuban coffees came out to $15. I have been going to Karla bakery for over 15 years. Today was my last time going there. The staff of women there are all caddy, have nasty attitudes and are extremely LOUD! (I'm half Cuban and I know Cubans are loud) these women are obnoxiously LOUD. I waited for 30 minutes for a pan con bistec, the bread was so hard the roof of my mouth is sore from a few bites. I ordered a tostada for my son and it came with 2lbs of butter (disgusting) I couldn't believe how they have 13 ladies working there and only one person in the kitchen supposedly cooking and ur food takes forever and it's cold. The customer service quality of this particular Karla's is the worst. These ladies don't care about the product they are handing out and will argue with u when u tell them they messed up ur order. Hoy una dijo que ella no iba a cojer lucha. This is worst than going to a hole in the wall en la Calle ocho. The quality of the food has gone down as well the pastelitos look weird and have very little weird tasting filling. Guess I'll start going to Vicki bakery from now on. Also I've notice that Karla B only responds to the good reviews, Karla maybe u should start reading and responding to the customers u are losing. Porque as of today, I'm one of them. But, this bakery has an ordering food system that I found out for myself which brings truth to the reviews I read. First, you walk up to the cashier place your order and pay, then you will get your receipt an a number and wait till you get your food. The cheese pastelitos were burnt n brown, the guava ones tasted old & looked like they had mold on them w/ a white crusty film. We were all completely disgusted. The cake was dry and tasteless. It barely had custard (natilla) filling and no flavor whatsoever. Cuban cakes are usually very moist. A boxed cake mix tastes better! Not even one person at the party liked it. A Latin Bakery that always does the job right when it comes to pastelitos! I can go to every latin bakery but, none can bake it quite as well. I have a niche for pastelitos de queso and they are just baked soft and flavorful! I have had other pastelitos from other bakeries and they were just downright toasted and no taste whatsoever. They also have other different varieties to choose from that you can enjoy and they are always baked fresh. Can be packed on mornings when everything in their store is fresh and ready for pick-up. Anyhow my complain with it, it felt watery, not milky like other places. Barely any expresso in it as well. I also ordered a pastelito, which I must say was good. It had a lot of filling in it. My last item was a pan con tortilla. It wasn't bad by any means but I want impressed. It was just ok. It was huge so you might want to share it.
