I'll first say that Karl was SO friendly, accommodating and knowledgable. He's a license locksmith and from his shop and tools you could tell he knew his stuff. Asked for a very unique key to be duplicated and I met him at this shop, he spent the time to look up the correct blank, had it in stock and cut it in SECONDS! Visually, it looked accurate and clean. I picked up an older and quite rare car in Chicago and planned to drive it back home to NYC from Highland Park. I collect old cars and I already knew that keys for this car would be a challenge to find. The door locks were not working and I was worried about driving home and/or parking the car outside without being able to lock the car. I called a few local locksmiths who didn't want or know how to fix this. When I called Karl on the phone, he offered advice on how I might be able to fix this myself. It was a holiday weekend and, when my own efforts didn't free the locks, Karl made the time to come out and open up his shop. He stayed late on a cold and rainy night to make sure that we got everything sorted before my trip the next day. Karl was friendly, helpful and resourceful. He explained exactly what he thought it was, what he could try, and why he thought it would work. The locks had heavy corrosion and had not been used in a long time. Karl carefully disassembled the lock mechanism, got it to work and was able to get me back on the road safely and securely. I am not sure if I was misled or fell into a sales trap. I contacted another locksmith to rekey or change a house lock with another lock I bought from Lowe's (the new lock is $80-$90 and can be re-keyed by myself). The locksmith told me he couldn't rekey the lock but it was installed by a different company and only that company could rekey the lock. He could replace the lock but he told me the existing lock was much better than the new one. He helped me to contact this company. The person at Karlock (the owner?) told me both my main door and the door to the garage used the same key. I thought the charges of rekeying locks was around $100-$150. Surprise! The charge was over $300! I saw a $95 service call charge. I don't know if it is a common practice but I was not told. I can understand I should be charged if I only asked him to check/identify an issue but I was actually paying him for a service. I don't think he should charge me that fee. If you take your car for a diagnosis, a shop may charge you a fee. However, if you let them repair you car, they would waive the fee. There are charges to rekey 2 locks, made additional keys, and other charges. I should have left the lock of the door to the garage as it but the guy said someone with the old key can get it. Now I am thinking that person will need to get into my garage first...too late. I was a little bit confused and made a mistake of ordering 4 keys (who needs that many keys when you can get into the house with garage door opener remotes or keypads?). The locks and the keys were "rekeyed" fine but the total charge was way more than I expected. I should have hire someone to replaced the lock or only myself. read more

I'd used Karlock back in 2004 when I accidentally locked myself out of my condo, so I chose Karl to come over to my new place to give me new locks. I bought an old classic car and none of the keys worked to get into the locked trunk. No fewer than four other locksmiths turned me down saying they couldn't help me - but not Karl. I brought the car to him and he managed to get the key into the lock and the lock to turn - but because we couldn't get the trunk open on-site, he refused to charge me. He's an honest and forthright guy and I will definitely use him again. (I did get the trunk open later). read more

Kar Locks staff is always helpful on the phone. They helped us re key our new unit when we expanded our business. The are also quick to come help when we had a lockout. Today they answered some questions about a mortise lock that was loose to help me maintain something myself even though they didn't get a service call by doing so. What great customer service. I called Karlock Locksmith in somewhat of a panic, because something happened to the lock on the driver side door of my car, and my key suddenly would not go into the lock. Karl took one look at it and said that it probably was just corrosion inside: he sprayed some WD-40 into the hole, and presto! the key went in as it should. If he were an unethical person, he could have sold me a bunch of expensive services and/or parts -- what do I know about car door locks?? But he fixed the problem quickly & easily on the spot, and was extremely pleasant to work with. Five stars from me! read more

Today I took my dog for a walk in the freezing cold weather. Upon returning, my garage door wouldn't open due to a power outage that occurred while I was gone. I didn't bring my keys so I needed to call a locksmith. Karl was very professional, kind, and quick to respond. He seemed very trustworthy and made sure I had the correct keys to all my locks after he was finished. I would certainly recommend him again. He saved my dog and I from the bitter cold. Karl responded to our call for help with a jammed deadbolt. He tried to help me over the phone (and told me when I called that he is licensed), came over when that didn't work. Great customer service! Spoke with Karl to have him fix our business's front door lock (had a hard time getting key out of lock). He took a look at the lock from a photo I sent him and had us perform a quick maintenance tip, and it worked! Karl did this so that he would not have to come out and easily do this because then he would have to charge us a fee. I like that he was honest and unselfish in helping us, when he could have easily come out and charged us to do a simple fix. We will definitely use Karlock for any future needs. read more

My car door would't open so I waited until their opening time and got a friend to take me over to the shop on Townline - and the door was locked. I called and left a message. This is the only reason I'm not giving a 5-star rating. An hour later I did get a call back. When I asked him pricing, he was straight up about it. When I explained the situation, I was advised to try a quick solution first and then to call back if it didn't work. I followed the clear instructions and it worked beautifully! Karl was very prompt in responding to my request for service and came out the same day to correct problems with locks. We had problems with strike plates sitting securely in door frames and doors closely properly. Karl diagnosed the problems and corrected them quickly. He also realized that our dead bolt lock wasn't extending completely and corrected that as well. He is obviously very knowledgeable in his trade and demonstrated a lot of integrity by not trying to up-sell us with new locks that we did not really need.
