    Rock and Roll
    Amber H.

I almost gave 3 stars until I got the Fire Island!!! So there's a sushi place I love out South that I compared Kasai and it just wasn't hitting the same. Now the sushi is decent. The first time I got the Rock N Roll & the Dynamite roll and they are ok. The salmon would be glorious if it was smoked. The cream cheese melts to me but does not stand out when it is fried. The batter is not fried enough. I did not feel like making the drive and decided to see if Kasai had a fire roll and they did! It's not half bad. It's filled with a shrimp tempura stick and then topped with shrimp and I forgot the other toppings. When I go to get it, there typically no one eating inside but it's clean. The lady at the counter is not the most personable but it's good for the far Eastside let alone us even having a sushi restaurant. Go try them for yourself !

I pass this place all the time and tonight I decided we were going to try it for dinner. I placed my order online, which was super easy. I was greeted promptly upon arrival. My order was ready just a few minutes later. We ordered the hibachi chicken teriyaki which came with fried rice, soup and salad. We also ordered the crab Rangoon, the spring rolls, an extra side of fried rice, and a spicy California roll! Spring rolls - fresh, full of vegetables, orange dipping sauce, 3 pieces Crab Rangoon - very good, good portion of crab mix, served with the same orange dipping sauce, 8 pieces Clear soup - reminded me of miso, had mushrooms and green onion, big portion Spicy California roll - this was my favorite out of everything, I added cucumber, it has spicy crab meat, avocado, and a spicy sauce on top Hibachi Chicken teriyaki - big portion, chicken pieces are huge I would prefer them smaller, the sauce in the dish was very watery which is a little disappointing but the flavor is great, served with a bunch of veggies. I think this place is better than Tian Fu off Washington. It's also super reasonably priced. I spent $40 with tip! Add it to your list of places to try, ASAP!

The service was speedy and friendly. The fish was fresh and delicious. I'm not sure which sushi roll was on the Love Boat, but it was hunks of cream cheese and wasn't super palatable. The inside is clean and neat.

Don't be intimidated by this location or the front of the restaurant. Staff is super friendly price is right and they have a great menu. I had the what I thought was the best Lo Mien I had ever had in DC last year. The Lo Mien here is neck and neck with it. I got the extra spicy option and I'd say it was 7/10 on the spice I was a little nervous at first but I think mild wouldn't have been enough for me. Ginger dressing on the salad tasted homemade. Entire meal on the lunch special was $14. Definitely check this place out if you are near or even far make the drive!

By far my favorite sushi place on the east side! Very friendly staff and quick service! The restaurant is welcoming as well.

Very quaint and good! Seems like a family owned kind of place. Small town vibe but cute. The dinner box hit the spot. I got a Foxy lady roll, beef & broccoli, spring roll, white rice, ginger dressed salad and miss soup for $22+tax. I also got a blueberry Hata soda which was tasty and a fun little novelty. You have to literally POP it open and it has a little glass ball very cool. The Maki roll has a generous portion of fish. The beef and broccoli had generous chunks of beef. Tasty and satisfying. Came here to treat myself to a sushi dinner during Gencon and in glad I did. Small hidden delight: Hand drawn drink menus and other art you can tell someone put their heart into making. I love it!

salmon teriyaki, spicy California roll, clear soup, salad rice

I'm so glad to have a sushi place close to home. Sad to say, this is the first time trying after living here 5 years. Me and hubby shared this meal and had plenty. Salmon teriyaki comes with white rice, soup, and salad. The salmon was well done, smothered in teriyaki onions and green peppers. It might have been like 30 seconds overdone but still very good. Also had a spicy California roll. Didn't seem very spicy at all, but put some Wasabi on it, and there you go. I got clear soup that had a few mushrooms and onions. That was very good. There is a tiny little iceberg salad with a few shavings of carrots and one cucumber piece. Would love to see a few greens added a couple more cucumbers and some more carrots... just saying. The lady atbthe counter was very nice and answered all my questions. I did take out burbyou can sit down and have table service. It seemed nice, clean quiet. They have beer and wine at least and maybe some cocktails maybe premixed. I did not looked at a drink menu, just wanted to place my To go order Anyway, overall we had a good dinner and we both said we would go back every once in a while.

Stopped here before heading back my hotel and glad I found this place! The inside looked a bit outdated. As a vegan I got some sushi (HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE ONE WITH PEANUTS!), pad thai (I specified to make it vegan and remove the egg) also assuming the pad thai had mushrooms? Couldn't tell but it did look like it (took a few bites but then separated it because I wasn't sure), and fried spring rolls!! This was all for me and I got full with 5ish sushi rolls! Total was $31 which I think is fairly priced.

Service is great and I really like the food. While I like sushi, I haven't embraced the more adventurous items and I feel they do a good job offering something for everyone. Ambiance is very average, but in general a hidden gem on the east side!

Kauai is a pretty solid place with a nice sized menu to choose from. I enjoyed them more when they did the all you can eat menu but I understand the times have changed. The service is has always been fast and friendly. We have been ordering delivery lately with excellent results! A favorite dish of mine is the chicken katsu and the fire island roll! They have a good selection of tempura and fried rolls as well.

This is a standard sushi spot. It's good, not bad, not the greatest sushi in the city, but when you have sushi cravings, this spot will definitely hit the spot. My son loved the hibachi chicken. The service was good, as our waitress was knowledgeable and quick to refill. The restaurant was clean, and I appreciated the relaxed vibe.

If you're looking for a quiet and relaxing sushi spot for an early dinner, this place may be just the thing. I was looking to unwind after a day of constant ambient chatter. The feel of Kasai is serene and perfect for a peaceful meal. The sushi is delightful, with fresh and flavorful options that will satisfy any sushi lover on a budget. The service is attentive and friendly, ensuring a pleasant dining experience. However, the tea could be improved, as it doesn't quite match the quality of the rest of the offerings. Overall, it's a great spot for a tranquil and tasty sushi dinner. Try the American Dream roll if you like soft shell crab!

Anyone know if they plan to reopen. Always has been our go to sushi and near our home in Irvington. Went by the other day and it appears they are repairing the building?

We moved to 965 N Shadeland Ave. We are waiting for health department check. Probably reopen 3weeks after. Thanks

I happened to visit on a warmer day so I was able to see the space with the garage door open. It was golden hour and it had everything all lit up. Very beautiful. Our service was amazing, couldn't have asked for a better server. I can't remember her name but she was so detailed in her descriptions, thoughtful with her suggestions, and had the perfect amount of attentiveness. Now on to the fun parts.... Drinks were a hit! We told our server what we like and they recommended a couple options. I again can't remember the exact name of the drink but mine was a gin cocktail. I'll attach some photos for you. As for the food, every bite I took was delicious. Our table shared the fried brussel sprouts and the ginger miso salad. A very lovely way to ease into our meal on a lighter note. They split up the salad onto two plates for us, which was sweet of them. The portion was pretty good for a $12 salad. Very refreshing. Brussel sprouts were absolutely fire. Get them! Along with that, I also ordered the tempura shrimp maki roll. Inside the roll was cucumber and avocado with giant tempura shrimp right on top, drizzled in spicy mayo. The presentation was cool, a slightly deconstructed version of what I would get somewhere else. There wasn't a single bite left on the plate. I would order all three of these dishes again in a heartbeat. Perfect for a date night or special occasion, but also works for just grabbing a bite with friends. Whenever I find myself back in Indy, Modita will be on my list.

We had a reservation at 6:45, and were sat shortly after that time. The place was busy for a Friday night, and was somewhat loud. Our waitress greeted us quickly, and was on top of things throughout the night. I started off with a ginger miso salad, based on recommendations on this page. Personally, I could have went without the $12 salad. I would have paid more like $6 for the amount of actual salad I got. The dressing was good, but nothing extraordinary. I did ask for no cucumbers- I could taste a faint taste of cucumbers on the salad, so think they just took them off after they were already placed. We split some Bao Buns. These were the highlight of the show. The pork on them was thick, the slaw was fresh, and the bao bun itself was fluffy. We split two dishes for dinner- the short rib and the chicken udon noodles. The chicken udon noodles were fantastic- packed full of flavor and tons of toppings in it. The short rib fell a little short of my expectations, but I had high expectations to begin with. We have had the short rib multiple times in the past- and normally it is a hunk of meat, similar to a roast. Now, it is strips of tiny pieces of meat with a bone attached to it. If the owner/general manager is reading this- GO BACK TO THE ROAST STYLE- the strips of meat was too much work to eat. Still packed full of great flavor though. I had the bridge to Anshun for my drink. I had never had Baiju before, but glad I tried it. It was a tangy drink that was also sweet- would say it's a must try. Overall, some changes since our last visit that weren't expected, but overall had a great evening here. Can't wait to return.

It had been before the pandemic since my last time in Indianapolis and much has changed on the city's dining and drinking landscape. Following a recommendation from a bartender at Sundry & Vice, I made my way to BODHI. I didn't have reservations, which I'd strongly recommend, since the place was packed on Wednesday night before 6PM. Fortunately, I was able to snag a seat at the bar, which was ideal since I was dining solo. Upon scanning the hip, high-energy, yet petite dining room, I had a sense of deja vu about it before realizing that I had been in this space before back when it was Black Market. I started off with a cocktail from Bodhi's intriguing and expansive drink list, a 7 Realms of Happiness, made with Old Hamer Bourbon, Faccia Brutto Centerbe, Cappelletti amaro, saffron honey, and lemon. My thought was that it's their twist on a classic Whiskey Smash. It was bittersweet, yet balanced, and simply a delight. As for the food, BODHI's menu is concise hitting the most of the Thai food usual suspects. I had the Papaya Salad and the Shrimp Green Curry. The papaya salad came out first. I was pleasantly surprised by its plating, looking much more like an elaborate entree with its cashews, watermelon radish, and chicharrones than the humble side salad atop a leaf of lettuce or cabbage that I've usually received at virtually every Thai restaurant I've ever been. It was just a pretty plate as it tasted even better than it looked. It was fresh and flavorful as those flavors popped from the perfect balance of salty, sweet, sour, spicy, and funky. It was the best rendition of a papaya salad that I've tasted. My bowl of curry was no less successful in balancing those diverse Thai flavor profiles. Unlike some/many other curries I've had where it seems like a bowl full of sauce with bits and pieces of protein or vegetables, Bodhi's rendition achieved the perfect "solids to sauce" ratio. The shrimp were cooked to perfection and the curry itself was bold and bright on my tongue. It was a delicious spoonful. I loved it! For "dessert", I had a second cocktail, the Garnet, a booze-forward whisky drink made with Mars Iwai Tradition, Pinhook Rye, Akashi Ume Plum whisky, Veda Mushroom Liqueur, Balsamic Vermouth, celery & orange bitters, and topped with a Moon Smoke Bubble. It was very unique, tasty and satisfying, if not a bit difficult to describe. I would maybe compare it to an Asian-influenced Vieux Carre and I thought it was excellent. Service from Carli, the bartender, was stellar throughout my night as she was friendly, helpful and exceedingly outstanding in making my drinks. A definite rock star! BODHI was outstanding. I'm not sure how to best describe the place. Was it as an amazing Thai restaurant that also does incredible cocktails or an amazing cocktail bar that also does killer Thai food? Regardless, I could not have enjoyed my experience more. If/when I'm back in Indy, BODHI is at the top of my list for a visit!

Upon asking, they didn't really apologize for forgetting his meal just told us to wait and then they brought it out slightly later. Nobody really came to check on us throughout the meal either. There is a fun little market in the restaurant to check out some indonesian snacks and drinks.
