This used to be our favorite place in town for sushi and such. They lost us as customers last weekend. Our adult son and daughter both happened to be in town visiting and so I made a reservation for a table at 5:30 on Saturday 7/25/26. We arrived a bit early, only to be told that all available tables were taken by another reservation for 6:00. To say this is poor management doesn't cover it. I really enjoyed dining here! The ambience and service were very warm and welcoming. The menu has a lot of variety so, whether you like sushi or not, you'll find something for you. There were several vegetarian appetizers, I tried the Agedashi Dofu and the Teriyaki Mushrooms which were both delicious and flavorful. I also had the Ume Chazuke which was also very good. The plum was quite sour but was balanced by the light broth and the freshness green onions. I would definitely order again. The vege roll was okay, a little boring, but not bad. My partner shared the appetizers with me and he also really liked them, even as someone who doesn't typically eat tofu. He also had the nigiri combo and really enjoyed the selection, save for the tamago nigiri. Everything was fresh! We are so happy we found this place! The sushi is delicious and we haven't had a dish we don't like. The service is amazing - but it is very busy! They recommend reservations as it is smaller and every table is always sat. You get to choose a soup or salad with sushi and we have had the gyoza and shrimp shumai starters that are delicious as well. The spicy mustard with the shumai is yummy but definitely spicy - comparable to St Elmo's cocktail sauce kinda spice. My husband and I are sushi fanatics and wanted to find some really good, locally owned sushi here in Indianapolis. Im consistently shocked at the prices around Indy, I moved from Seattle earlier this year and our entire bill at Sakura is the same cost as 1.5 rolls in the Seattle area. Its always very busy which is a great sign. The only issue we had was parking, very limited amount of spaces and we had to wait upwards of 20 minutes for the rest of our group to join us just because they couldn't find a spot to park. Kind of a cool place that' seems a bit of a hidden gem. Off of keystone this lil restaurant has a wonderful ambiance of Japanese style and a very impressive menu. I got sushi but the noodles and gyoza looked amazing. There is construction outside the restaurant from keystone but it was really easy to get in and out. We've been using Sakura for many years, mostly for take-out sushi rolls. The quality and taste were always unbeatable. However, recently, on a couple of occasions we noticed the freshness was not as good as before (we speculated that we took orders on weekdays instead of Fridays or Saturdays as usual, but it can't be an excuse). Hate to leave a bad review. We have enjoyed Sakura for many years. However, never again. We sat at the sushi bar. While waiting for my husband, a cockroach came out from under the bar and crawled across the bar. A waitress saw it and set her tray on it (which had our beverages on it). Then she wiped it off with her hand as she scooped the tray off the bar. Then we saw another cockroach inside the sushi bar crawling on the fish. I've been here a few times as it's one of the closest Japanese restaurants near me. Cool little spot that always seems to be busy! Service is great. I've had the sashimi, a few different rolls, and a couple different ramens/udons. All in all it's pretty good. This place is usually bustling, but we lucked out on this rainy day and got in for dinner without a crowd. It's such a charming Japanese restaurant that made us feel like we were in Japan or perhaps a Japanese Disney (they even had Disney music playing). We were greeted by a lovely, smiling lady and got to sit near the sushi chef, which added to the fun. The hot herbal tea we ordered was absolutely refreshing and savory. We shared the cold buckwheat noodles, which were incredibly tasty and unique. Our sushi rolls were pretty good choices, we particularly liked the smoky and crunchy Canadian roll, and the fantastic Texas roll. The saiyan roll was okay, but the texture was a bit off, and the conch was decent considering we're landlocked. Fortunately I was only a few minutes away, so I decided to roll through and I'm so glad that I did. The restaurant is very unassuming from the outside, but you just get that feeling that you know it'll be legit right as you enter the door. Used to be our go to for Japanese food and sushi but food quality and preparation has declined greatly. For example, the ika teriyaki appetizer used to be well prepared but now it's a rubbery mess with nasty teriyaki sauce. Rolls are really awful, the sushi rice is below par, dry and not like usual sushi rice. Fresh fish quality has devolved into gas station level of sushi. Now that I've been coming here for 15 years and have finally been to Japan... looks like it's still 5 stars! This is a family staple for us. I have wrapped their sushi in seran wrap, packed it with ice, and driven it across several state lines to deliver to my sister (who is moving back to Indy, with Sakura firmly planted in her "pro" column). Go to rolls: soft shell crab roll, Canadian roll, and shrimp tempura roll. This is HANDS DOWN the best soft shell crab roll I've ever had!! The sauce that they use for this...INCREDIBLE. Nowadays, sushi is always drenched in a pound of eel sauce, spicy mayo, and hot sauce. Here, you can actually taste the freshness of the rice with each piece, taste how each ingredient works with one another, and have an amazing sauce as a special complement. Both the miso soup and salad are great starters. So many of the waitresses that work here have been working here for 10+ years, and truly gives this oplace a homey hole in the wall feel that is impossible to find these days. The only thing you can even consider a MINOR downside is service. It's amazing and lovely but there's only so much space and so many sweet older servers... maybe just call ahead since they take reservations, expect a wait on Mothers day, and don't try to bring your party of 10 here. This is a smaller spot for sure. If you want fast service at the cost of quality sushi and a lovely experience, then this place isn't for you! read more

I've been coming to Sakura for years, and I have no clue why I never put in a good word. Sakura is about as high quality and fair priced as you're going to get in the Indy region. I wouldn't bother trying any of the boutique places downtown or on Mass Ave - you'll be disappointed compared to here. Ex Hot tea is $1.50. They will bring you refills. So many other places want to charge $3 for a cup. It is one of those things overcharging for makes little sense They have all of the traditional Japanese menu items you want...from a simple box to a donburi. The uni they get here is really really fresh - unreal for the Midwest. Make sure to let it sit in your mouth for a few seconds and THEN take a sip of water! The miso is always on point. Seaweed salad is fresh. And all of the basic rolls taste great. Avoid the more complicated rolls. Stick to the hamachi and saba. read more
