    Bitters wall
    Sarah S.

Their shop is small but mighty-their bitters wall is both an inspiration and aspiration. They offer samples of popcorn with some of their salts and seasonings, and looking around the shop was so much fun. This is an excellent place to expand one's kitchen and home bar. Also their chocolate wall: pure temptation.

    So much good chocolate!

The owner here is so extremely kind and informative! She offered samples of yummy salt truffle popcorn to me and my entire group. There was so many options of chocolate and you will not feel list cause the owner was quick to as what we like and she will tell you which chocolate goes with your palate. I felt like I was in the store from the film chocolate. The place smelled amazing as she also sells fresh flowers. I loved all the options from spices, candles, flowers, and yes chocolates from all over the world! It's truly a diamond in the rough. Everything me and my group purchased was worth every penny! Hope to come back again very soon!

For the chocolate or salt connoisseur in your life, this store is a must visit in Portland. They specialize in a broad range of high end chocolate, salt, pepper, wine and flowers. You don't go here if you are on a budget. This is where you go for a splurge or to find a specialty item that can't be located elsewhere in Portland. The selection of salt spoons alone is worth a visit. One of the reasons I can't quite give them five stars is that the experience is overwhelming for me each and every time. The space is small and my senses are overloaded with the smell of the flowers and the sheer number of items stacked high on the walls that it all seems too much at times. I've been raving about Cacao for ages, but I think The Meadow gives them a run for their money in the boutique chocolate bar category. The least expensive bar is around $3 and they range upwards of $25 (yes, you read that correctly). I felt like Charlie Bucket taking my precious candy bar to the counter and half expected to find a golden ticket inside. Of course, my heart still belongs to Cacao since they serve my favorite drinking chocolate in the city. But this high end marketplace is now my favorite food art gallery in town. The wall of salt belongs in the MoMA.

Heaven? Oh no, just shelf full of fancy chocolates!

Fanciness ensues! Imagine if you're Willie Wonka and you had a tiny boutique with fancy salt, chocolates and bitters. You would end up with The Meadow. The store has all you can imagine when you think of the words "handcraft", "artisan" and "locally sourced". I'm not 100% sure about that last one but it looked like the salts and chocolates are mostly Portland made. Pick up some truffle salt and siracha salt, you'll want to put that one everything. I got some out of town friends some chocolate gifts. It's not everyday shopping but if you want to give or buy something special, this place will be gourmet. They had some popcorn with truffle salt available for sampling. There is a jar of single French caramels near the register, those were a delicious treat! The person working in the store was helpful in providing recommendations when I asked about bitters. Mostly, I don't think you can go wrong here but your wallet will be a lighter when you leave!

Salts from around the world - The Meadow

Yelp reviews should always be taken with a grain of salt. Luckily, you can purchase however many grains and kinds of salt you desire at The Meadow on Mississippi Avenue. Salt and Salt Blocks make up two of the four pillars of the Meadow store along with Chocolates and Cocktail Bitters. Seriously, if you are into any of these four things, you must visit The Meadow. * Salt from all regions of the world in a variety of flavors, textures, and uses * Himalayan Pink Salt Blocks from Pakistan for grilling, freezing, or serving food * Bitters & Mixers cause they are to alcohol what salt is to food * Chocolates from around the globe you can eat at your home In The Meadow, you can't build a snowman, but you can find a tiny wonderland of craft salts, gourmet chocolates, pink salt blocks, and handmade cocktail bitters that'll allow you to conspire as you dream by the fire, to face unafraid, the flavors that they've made, eating like a winner, Portland.

    Wall of salts!

"Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost its savor, wherewith shall it be salted? It is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out and trodden under foot of men." Um, not so fast, Jesus. Are we talking table salt or really, really good salt? If we're talking about the salts sold at the Meadow there will be no casting out of salts, and in fact I will be licking each fleck up, trodden under stinky feet or not. But these salts would never lose their savor, so pour some on. Apparently The Meadow has the world's largest salt collection, and it is quite impressive. My friend had mentioned how amazing their black truffle salt was, and I already knew I wanted to come by, but I was not expecting two walls full of salt procured from Japanese volcanoes, Brazilian seas, French caves, and everything in between. Little sample after little sample lead to a very hypertensive me, but it was worth it. They also sell big Himalayan salt slabs for the home cook, so when you need to give a gift that keeps on giving, this is a good bet. The salts are sold in different sizes, so you can keep your costs low by getting a 'taster' or go crazy getting some rare and exotic salt in a 32 oz bag. The staff is knowledgeable about how to pair the salts and I never got a sales pitch, just friendly and enthusiastic Portlandia hospitality. Besides salts, there is an amazing collection of bitters and chocolates, as well as a decent flower selection. Whoever runs this store must operate on the pleasure principle, because everything offered here pleases on a visceral level, and I like it. "Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another."-good encapsulation of the Meadow's philosophy. And that salt and tomatoes go together like peaches and cream. If you can't get to Portland, they have a website!

The lovely employees of The Meadow. Excellent customer service!

Mothers is a great place to eat downtown, but I'd recommend making reservations or at least calling ahead. They get busy! The food came out quickly, hot, and prepared correctly. All items were quite tasty. It's not exactly gourmet in terms of you taking a bite and thinking it's the best thing you've ever eaten, but it's solid. I really want to try dinner there. Ambience is busy and bustling. Really it's what you'd expect for a downtown diner. But when our server was with us, they were very nice and patient with my questions and requests. It's a bit loud when the place is on the full side, making it difficult to have a conversation. I wouldn't bring my girlfriend who is hard of hearing, at least with a group. I'd be curious to try more of the menu. I was very much not wowed by the breakfast. The beverages were however very nice, and I recently had the cobbler dessert and it looked amazing and tasted better. We had the coffee (Extracto, love.), I had a really good hef and my mother a very well balanced Bellini that I was very pleasantly surprised with trying. From what I saw, the lunch sounds very good and I'd be more apt to recommend folks give that a shot if they happened to be going there too. I'm not sure if I'd recommend as a must go stop. Vibe wise, the ambience is overall really nice. I think having rolled flatware, even with just upgraded napkins, would better complete the aesthetic you initially see and feel. This would also connect with the price point of the food and quality of the beverages. As a fellow server, on that note I would expect more consistent stronger visual appearance standards with servers. (Sorry guys! But some of you looked great!) Overall, I'd definitely join a friend for coffee and lunch over there in the future. Just wouldn't be my top pick for a celebratory brunch or intimate dinner with a date or friends and fam.

When we came around 3pm, it wasn't busy, so we got to try some of the flavors right away. They had about fifteen different flavors, including few limited edition ones. We tried about six different ones before deciding the ones we wanted. The staff member was super friendly, politely handing us the sampling spoons with the requested flavors. The store offered single, double, split and kids scoops. They had waffle cone and bowls available as well. We picked the double vanilla and my favorite sea salt caramel ribbons. The kid's scoop costed $5.25 each and additional toppings were 75 cents each. I loved both the scoops. The taste was as good as other locations we had tried. The ice cream was dense and creamy.
