I stopped here with my boyfriend before a comedy show. I made reservations the day before which I would recommend during their busy times since this is a smaller size restaurant. We ordered grasshopper sushi to start. I was pleasantly surprised and it tasted good. It was crunchy and a must for adventurous eaters. I informed the stay I was dairy and gluten free. We ended up getting the Real rainbow roll and first love roll. Both rolls were delicious and the size of the rolls were perfect. Overall a nice cozy restaurant with quality sushi. A very unique sushi experience Sushi Mazi has uncommon pairings and an attentive staff. It is a small sushi restaurant that fills up very quickly set up in almost a galley configuration - two rows of tightly spaced tables. The staff was constantly going up and down dropping off plates and taking orders. They were very efficient. The sushi was hit and miss. Some of the classics were very good, but I will never understand putting a piece of matcha chocolate on a salmon nigiri. That was atrocious. The chocolate and raw fish combo was not good at all. Strangely, despite being not warm outside, inside it was incredibly hot. It was so warm that I had to leave a couple times during my meal to get comfortable again. The hall to the bathroom was not hot so it wasn't the overall building. I don't quite get why it was so warm. It was fine. I wouldn't not go back but I don't think I would seek them out. read more

Service was okay. Space is cute. They were very busy with to go order. We ordered the platter for 2. The order of things arrived are completely off. Sashimi should come first then nigiri then roll. But it's completely reversed. Rolls came first, nigiri, sashimi. We were stuffed with lots of rice at the beginning. Didn't like the sushi rice. It's mushy and not high quality. Fish in the combo is nothing special, not much taste and low cost kind. Frozen tuna, tai, etc... that you can get from Japanese grocery store. What surprised me is the exact same kind of fishes are prepared in nigiri and sashimi. If I know it's those kind of fishes I would not order this combo platter. I don't usually order these @ real sushi place. We did order some other individual nigiri pieces. Those were a little better. Overall it's not the fish or quality I expect. Stopped in here because I was looking for a quick place with good reviews to get a bite to eat. This places seemed like a good choice, and it was. When we walked in it was empty (they had just opened), and we got seated immediately. Once we were seated we looked over the menu and ordered some miso soups, which were quite good (I feel like miso soup is hard to really mess up). We moved onto our main order, where we ordered a couple rolls, some hamachi nigiri, some other salmon nigiri, and a chefs choice sashimi The sashimi chefs choice came first, it was fresh and plating was very nice. Though, none of the items on the plate were explained to us. I have a general idea of what everything was upon seeing it, but there was one thing I had zero idea about. Once the rest of the sushi came out we started eating, the service was quick and the people were kind. Unfortunately, the first nigiri I picked up had a hair in the rice under the fish.. Common mistake, so I set it aside and moved on. Not a huge deal, but deff something to mention. Me and my partner have eaten here several times before, the staff has always been nice, and the food has always been delicious. I really don't want to have to do this, but today we had a really bad experience eating here. The food was good as always, but the service was another story. We went there today with two of our friends, both of whom happen to be black, and our server was very micro aggressive. He came up to us in the middle of our meal, after already announcing all of the specials earlier , and while looking exclusively at both of our black friends, he asked if they wanted the "special fried chicken". I don't even know what to say. This was a new server, we have never seen him before and the other staff is great. We didn't get his name but he is tan and had an earring. This was a really awful experience and ruined the rest of our meal. Inappropriate and so sad because we loved the food. I really hope to go back WITHOUT the racial profiling. read more

Sushi Mazi is decent overall, but on my visit, didn't seem to live up to the experience of most of the other reviewers. To be clear, the only location that is open is the one on Division Street, and this is where we visited. One curiosity / concern is with the chopsticks...they're wooden or made from bamboo, and don't appear to be disposable. The tops of them showed wear at the edges (shiny finish was worn off), which lead me to believe that they're washed and reused. Porous materials such as wood and bamboo cannot be sanitized (which is why you'll never see an NSF certification on any kitchen implement that has wooden handles). We decided to risk it and dine there anyway. Service was prompt and friendly, but the food wasn't anything particularly noteworthy. Presentation was nice, but one of our rolls was comically tall, topped with a huge amount of a fried panko / mango mixture. It was tall enough to make it impossible to eat in one go, and if eating in one piece was possible, its flavors and textures probably would have fused far better than they did. Most of the items on the menu are spicy, so if you're not into that, Sushi Mazi probably won't be to your liking. The space is also very tiny, so if you're concerned about the pandemic, it is probably best to visit early, before it gets busy. read more

Food is exceptional! Service, owners and staffs, goes above and beyond! Not your regular sushi place, but with menus that specializes in aged tuna and salmon. The sushi bursts with flavors. I almost walked out as soon as I walked in because it was empty and the music was a bit obnoxious, but music is personal preference so I'm filtering that out of my rating. The owner and staff are incredibly friendly and the food is superb! The mackerel was very mild, which is unusual in my experience, but very pleasant. The Tobiko and Ikura were both fresh and delicious, and they include the option for quail eggs, which I love. Creamy with the salty, that's what's up. I asked for a recommendation and the owner didn't disappoint; aged tuna that he blasted with a torch and topped with a lemon aioli or something. Jeer Desus, that was good! read more

Absolutely incredible. Such a wonderful experience all around. The sushi was so fresh, out of this world. The aged tuna is a MUST. Service was fantastic, very friendly staff. Very clean and beautiful restaurant. Chef Mark came to greet us at the end. We were truly blown away, I would recommend this to anyone look for sushi - also great for take out! PSA: Guys, there are TWO different locations with the same name. Notice that the interior pics of this place represent two different decor! I don't know if it's because of this mix-up of reviews that I've been let down with the high ratings by fellow Yelpers. I've been craving sushi since the onslaught of covid-19, and I finally decided to splurge on a dinner for myself. But man, I was very disappointed by the two sushi rolls I splurged on ($33 for a party of 1!). The roll presentation was nice and large rolls enough for two people. However I was disappointed by the lack of flavor - fish quality was over-shadowed by the over abundance of rice. Disproportionate amount of rice:fish ratio, I should say. Even though I ordered two very different rolls (golden dragon roll, and water ave roll), the two tasted about the same. The tempura inside the sushi was a bad idea, as it came out mushy by the time I ate my rolls ~10 mins later. Spicy-loving people would be let down by the lack of spice in the Water Ave roll. Nice guy taking orders and nice interior design though, but I wouldn't come back again. read more

We had great conversation & you can tell the owner really loves what he does -- such a grateful guy! He even remembered me the next time I came in too. Excellent service. The sushi was pretty fresh and well made and they were very generous with the salmon skin for the salmon skin salad. I also got the cucumber salad- fresh, but a little too sour for my liking. I was excited to try Sushi Mazi, since it came highly recommended by others. I ordered it for take out. I wish that I had listened to the few reviewers who mentioned that they were disappointed in Sushi Mazi's lack of flavor. I really wanted to love this. I had the Seared Fatty Salmon Nigiri, Hamachi tuna Nigiri, Salmon Nigiri, and Tamago Nigiri. The nigiri's rice was lacking the texture and flavor that you expect from sushi rice (via the rice vinegar); it was bland and flavorless. The fish itself did not taste as high quality or fresh as one would expect from a sushi restaurant. The Red Spider Roll was also flavorless, oily from the flakes, and rice wasn't the consistency you expect from sushi rice and a bit mushy. The tempura batter of the soft shell crab didn't seem fully cooked. It's rare that something is so bad that I won't eat it. The Chicken Katsu was dry and flavorless. My husband had a tuna roll, and he said that it wasn't good either. I wish that there was something positive that I could say about this meal, but my husband and I both found it to be very unappetizing. This might be the worst sushi I've ever had. read more

We picked up Sushi Mazi last weekend, so a disclaimer that this is a review of the takeout food (do to COVID19). The first thing to note is that the nigiri is priced on the menu as 1 piece. I have never seen that before, I thought nigiri was always 2 pieces. Anyway, just note that before you order cause otherwise everything seems cheap! Once you realize it's for 1 piece, I would say pricing is a little high. The food itself wasn't bad. We got a bunch of nigiri, a spider roll, and a few of the specialty nigiris. My husband liked those as they had interesting sauces and toppings but I prefer a cleaner and fresher taste of just the fish. The pieces were a generous size but overall the fish lacked flavor. The only exception was the salmon belly which was very tender and fresh. Otherwise it wasn't bad or fishy tasting, just kind of bland. I give 3 stars because they have a nice menu with other choices - maybe their rolls are better than the nigiri. We did like the salmon roll but it was only 5 pieces which is somewhat small. Overall I would probably try again if I wanted rolls or speciality nigiri, but for plain fish I would try elsewhere. read more

We went to Mazi last night for my birthday dinner and it nothing less than perfect. We did make reservation and were seated within 5 minutes. It's a small place so I recommend doing so to give the place a heads up. We ordered a great local unfiltered sake called Momo Kawa Pearl. We ordered edamame, miso, yellowtail nigiri, and two rolls. The miso came out with our sake, very nice touch and edamame came out shortly afterwards. The rolls followed and then our yellow tail, my only request would be to have my yellow tail before my rolls but that's just my personal preference of order:) There was only one server and he was on top of everything. The ambiance is cozy and warm, just a local vibe that makes you want to come back. We were there until closing and the owner made it a point to come out and say hello/ask how everything was/ & wished me a happy birthday! All around great service and very tasty sushi!
