Wow.. what can I say? Typically at this price point, a few dollars for a nigiri, less than 10 dollars per roll - generally the goal is to find great value as opposed to quality or taste. But I can confidently say that on the east side of Portland, you will be hard pressed to find better quality period. I ordered Nigiri Sushi and a roll. In addition I ordered Gyoza which was just ok. It was the worst sushi I have ever had. Had a fishy aftertaste and was hard on the edges of the pieces. The roll was not good at all either. I tossed the order. I was concerned I might get food poisoning. What a waste of almost $40 with delivery. I called thinking that they would want to know and would do the right thing. I spoke to one of the employees. I let her know what I experienced and asked her what she could do about this. She told me she would tell "them" whoever that is, and then told me she was not willing to do anything. She stated that she knew the sushi was fresh, basically not believing me. I eat Sushi a-lot. My favorite places are Yoko's on SE Gladstone and Bamboo Sushi. I thought I'd try somewhere else. Don't ever eat there...it was awful and they don't treat their customers well. I ordered bento. The gyoza, chicken and salmon teriyaki were clearly pre-packaged before they were cooked. The salad dressing was watery and weird. I explained I recently had dental surgery and my gums are still a bit sensitive to fried food and grains also rice and grains aren't a good idea either at the moment. I arrived just as they were open. I was the only customer in the restaurant and when I pleasantly asked for more salad rather than rice & steamed gyoza or shumai rather than fried the very curt server Esther said I could not bc the items I ordered 'didn't come that way'. Even after I asked her to ask the chef and offered to pay she resisted and hemmed & hawed when I finally & respectfully asked the chef myself. He agreed. When I was nearly finished eating she commented 'wow, you ate the whole thing and so fast'! I'm 6'4" 200 # and eat at a moderate pace normally . Considering I hadn't had solid food in several days I ate even more slowly as I had to take extra caution bc of the surgery. I have over 30 years experience in restaurant industry and I can't imagine saying the things she said to me. The best I can say is somethings were ok. One of the 3 rolls was inedible. Tempura shrimp that tasted like old oil from the fryer and limp sad cukes coupled with brown avocado. I've never had sushi and thought -this tastes old so that was a first. Bummer since it's close to home but luckily there's lots of good food to opt for. This is a one and done for me. Just tried Mio today for the first time. I ordered the spicy salmon roll, the (shrimp) tempura roll, and the Salmon Mania roll. The sushi tasted great and I really enjoyed it! My favorite of the three rolls was the shrimp tempura roll, it had perfect portions of all ingredients and was also really big! I ordered take out over the phone, and the employee I spoke with was friendly and even gave me instructions on how to find them. When I picked up my food, they were very kind and asked me about myself which I found to be very charming. Once many years ago (10?), Mio on Hawthorne was alright and I wouldn't mind coming here if other sushi spots were too busy! However, since moving back to Portland last year and into the neighborhood, I was sad to find that the food here now is barely edible. There is so much amazing sushi in this city at this price point, it just felt unfair when I received my order (sashimi meal and rainbow roll) and tasted it. I had the most unpleasant experience with Mio Sushi Hawthorne this evening. I placed a "to-go" order. I arrived and they gave me a bag, I paid and drove home. As I walked in my house the phone was ringing. I answered and was told I was given the wrong order and needed to bring it back immediately, virtually ordered me to come back! She added "you can't live that far because you're home now". I asked for them to come because I was extremely exhausted which is why I chose to order food. It was now after 9 pm. I didn't bother telling her it takes 15 minutes each way and I had to find parking. The result: I ate some of what I was given (I received 1 of the 4 I ordered). I posted the rest on Buy Nothing and someone can't to me to take and enjoy it. I will never patron Mio Sushi again due to the horrendous treatment and demands put on me to correct their error. I have now been to a couple of locations of Mio Sushi and you know what? I like their food. I know that there are plenty of high end sushi places in town and I have enjoyed the fare from those restaurants as well and for quick, easy and affordable food, Mio fits the bill. I was looking for something fast to get because I was only on a short break from work and a poke salad was about as quick as one could expect. I basically had all of 15 minutes to grab it, go and eat and get back to work. The poke salad ($8.50) had nice chunks of tuna with cucumbers, seaweed and some micro greens all in a soy sauce based dressing. It was a little on the small side but for its simplicity, it was quite good. Maybe another texture in the salad could add to it? I know that Poke Mon further down Hawthorne offers up many different options including tiny rice crackers. Anyway, Mio Sushi is a pretty good stop and with several around PDX, I know I have a go-to when I'm craving Japanese. Enjoy. read more

We chose to go here because our go-to sushi spot Yama was booked and we were pressed for time. This proved to be a mistake as we had one of the worst dining experiences in recent memory. We were seated, then waited to receive menus after about 15 minutes (during a not abnormally busy time). Our order finally came about 30 minutes later (After two other parties who came after us) which never feels good. The time that the waiting staff was actually attentive was when it was time to ask if we were "ready for the check". This is usually a normal ask, but, we still had food and drink in front of us and were still eating and in mid-conversation. There are other options for sushi in Portland and i would recommend to stay away from this one. (unless you enjoy slow, bad service for mediocre sushi). read more

Today I came by and actually caught them open during business hours when they informed me that the online prices they have posted are not their actual prices and they do not have any of the specials that are listed online. Came here for lunch with my aunt, the place was pretty empty for it being lunch time there was only one other person here. We ordered the spicy chicken and broccoli, deep fried sushi and a bento box combo. They also give you free miso soup and it was a bit to salty. The food came out and the deep fried sushi was great, my favorite thing here. My aunt liked her order, I thought it was a bit tasteless and didnt have much broccoli. My bento box was ok, salad was good , teriyaki chicken was good but had way to much sauce on top. What I didnt like was that it didnt come with rice? Or maybe the waitress forgot to bring it? I wanted to give this place a chance and I was skeptical after reading reviews but I went ahead and tried it anyway with my two roommates, mostly because I'm not too fond of other sushi places in the area anyway. So why not? First off, most of the other reviews talked of terrible service and our service was really good. We were also the only ones in there, though. I ordered the goma salad which tasted fine, as well as the spicy tuna roll and a spider roll, both which tasted fine. The tuna looked a little worrisome but didn't smell off and tasted good. After eating my food that wasn't amazingly good but not terrible either, I was ready to give a three star review and consider coming back. Then, I saw my roommates' plates. Both got a bento box with spicy chicken and vegetable tempura, and the spicy chicken tasted cheap and not particularly good. Two stars. Then, we found a gnat in one of their rice bowls and both of them left with terrible stomach aches. Now I'm down to one star, and since I had the raw fish dishes, I fear for my life. They are across the street from New Seasons, it was 4/20, stoners were out with the munchies, and they all crawled into Mio. You should have the foresight to know what the hell is going to happen on 4/20. Instead, service was horrible because they didn't know it would get busy, so they sent servers home. This might seem like a small thing, but there is a little Mexican sushi chef here that LOADS the most amazingly sliced avocado pieces on to the rolls. Specifically the Caterpillar roll. Order it and you'll see what I mean. Instead of using half of an avocado for the entire roll, he probably uses 2 avocados per roll. I dig it. They don't skimp out. read more

I used to love this Mio Sushi location. In fact, I used to be a regular at this location a few years ago. It seems there has been some major changes here over the last few years, and not for the better. The server staff has changed. There used to be some incredible servers that worked here, now they seemed distracted and scattered. And the quality of sushi has drastically declined. Sushi Standards Rating Scale: What I ordered: calamari, avocado roll, super eel, and Portland roll Total Cost: $22.90 (before tip) Décor: Neither good, nor bad, but definitely nothing memorable. The major complaint I have are the acoustics, as it makes it ear-splitting loud at times, especially if you have loud groups or crying children. [2 stars] Creativity: As a general rule, they really miss out on the potential for creativity that sushi offers. [1 stars] Presentation: The only memorable presentation was the calamari with its cellulose strings. It offered a beautiful display bed for the calamari. They really miss the artistic boat on the sushi though. [3 stars] Freshness: Everything I tried that should have some warmth to it, (even my date's miso) was lukewarm. The eel was mushy and as I mention below, the crab tastes pre-made, but past its prime as it is nothing but mush. [2 stars] Taste: Every thing tasted, at best, so-so. The one standout was the calamari, which was well seasoned and cooked just right. The super eel was the biggest disappointment (especially at $8.95) as the crab inside was more like crab salad and the overall combination of over sweet eel with crab mush, made for a very unpleasant taste and texture. [3 stars] Sustainability: When so many other sushi restaurants (even some sushi-go-rounds) have switched to bamboo chopsticks, I was disappointed to see they still used the throw-away wooden, break-apart chopsticks. There is also no mention of sustainability with their fish. [0 stars] Service: This was quite a let down, as they used to have amazing servers. The service was distracted and scattered. We were never asked the simple "how is everything." I had to hand them our payment after they came and left our table twice without picking it up. [2 stars] Bang for your buck: At one time, I would say this Mio Sushi location was definitely worth the price, but after all the declines I have seen here I would say they are seriously overpriced. [2 stars] Overall: I am very disappointed in this location's major decline, but caution you not to judge all Mio Sushi's based on this location. I know the Hollywood location is much better. The Wife and I had an anniversary lately, nine years of adventure and shenanigans that would make Lucy and Ethel jealous. Grandma had the Tax Deduction for the night and we were free to go eat things that would make a five year old vomit. That there is good times for parents! We are, admittedly, sushi novices. We go a lot but usually the sushi is lazily trundling by on a conveyor, occasionally we hit a place on 82nd near Clackamas Mall that has table service. For this special night we wanted to hit a new place so it was decided that we would try Mio Sushi on Hawthorne. In the words of the Knight in Indiana Jones III, we choose wisely. It is a tastefully decorated open space, nicely lit with lots of window space. The tables are intimate and well spaced so you are not right on top of the next tables conversation. The menu is excellent, wide variety of sushi and other items both cooked and not so much. For Sushi you get a plastic menu with a grease pencil and you mark your choices. The wait-staff was just excellent, attentive without hovering and very patient with first timers to their restaurant. We highly suggest stopping in to try Mio Sushi anytime. read more

It just wasn't great. It was so hot in there, maybe they don't have air conditioning, but who likes to sweat while eating, and eat sushi in a hot restaurant? The service was disintered at best, never coming back to check on things, and we had to flag down a waitress to order and to get our bill, as well as to get our change. The food was just ok. I had a bento box; cheap wilted iceburg lettuce and a piece of dessicated raw broccoli just don't cut it as a salad. The miso was the saltiest I have ever had. The salmon teriyaki was good with a sweet sauce and the goyza fried, and who doesn't like fried food? The california rolls appeared to have mayo in the crab, which is not what I would have expected and it didn't taste good. We also ordered sushi, and the portions were generous but the seaweed on the rolls wasn't cut all the way through, so when I picked up one piece it dumped all the stuff out from both onto the plate. My friend didn't enjoy her tuna and didn't finish it. The edamame was good. I don't think I'll go back. There has got to be better service and sushi elsewhere. read more

They offer an excellent bento meal which comes with miso soup, their house salad (mixed greens, and it does not suck), vegetarian gyoza or tofu, and white or brown rice as well as two (or three, for a few dollars more) 'main dish' options from the menu. That's more food than you can shake a stick at, and for a good price, too! Service: 2 stars I don't know whether it was because it was busy or the fact that it seemed like we didn't have a dedicated server, but the last time I visited this Mio Sushi, the service sucked. We got scant attention at long intervals -- no edamame to start with, and a waiter who asked if I'd like a soda refill who said hurriedly she would be back to do so but never returned. It was a good five or ten minutes later that another server caught it and refilled my drink. This appears to be a regrettable trend, as I have frequented this location for the past couple of years and noticed a decline in service of late. Eats: 2.5 stars Normally, I'd rate this at 3 to 3.5 stars as a good place to get a bite, but my last experience was anything but stellar. The miso was lukewarm, my tempura was still cold in the middle, and the texture of my roll was mooshy, as if the ingredients had been exposed to room temperature for too long. Overall, this was a culinary fail. Total rating: 2.5 stars I'm being generous and rating this at 3 stars, as I normally do have a much better experience at Mio.
