Portland Roll
Maddy H.

this is the best sushi in town. Don't skip this sushi. They are super friendly, everything is crazy fresh and the prices are more than reasonable. We came across this as a neighborhood joint and have come back twice since. We got the miso (very flavorful), tempura veggies (zucchini is excellent), nigiri (tuna and salmon fresh and buttery), and then a bunch of rolls with real crab. Will be back again and again. Don't let the decor fool you.

Don't remember the first one, California roll, Fire Dragon Roll, Oregon Roll, King Tuna Roll, 82nd Roll, don't remember the last one

I came across this place because I was looking for a conveyor belt sushi restaurant - and although they are not conveyor belt anymore, I'm so glad I decided to come here!! First of all, the rolls are so delicious and they have a great variety. I have my favorites - the Oregon Roll and the 82nd Roll - you have to try them!! Secondly, the owners are amazing. They are probably the nicest restaurant owners I've ever met. They know us by name now (yes we come often!) and they always have nice conversations with us. My entire family comes here now often and we also tell our friends about this place! They can get busy sometimes but it's worth the wait! I have not been to any other sushi places since discovering this one and I hope they stay in business for a long time! :)

Hairs found in my dish after I finished eating. Utterly disgusting. It wasn't busy in the slightest which should have told me to leave.

After traveling 11 hours to get to Portland we found a sushi spot that was close to the room we rented. We sat down to eat. At first it looks like a message parlor but then as son as you get in you get an old school Chinese food restaurant feeling. The misses ordered her California rolls and we both got miso soup. I didn't really find anything that appealing so I ordered the only deep fried roll on the menu. The soup was kind bland. The rolls also didn't have much of a flavor. Misses said that the California rolls tasted mostly like cucumber. I then found some hairs on my plate. Utterly disgusting. It wasn't busy in the slightest which should have told me to leave.

Be aware when you order from here because of the false advertising. Kura claims "fresh Bluefin tuna" and has a correct photo of what Bluefin tuna should look like. When I received the order the fish is faint pink white in color. This is either albacore tuna or not fresh bluefin tuna that has been frozen. I've asked multiple people if this roll looked like bluefin and none of them suggested eating it. I've previously ordered tempura from this location and it was pretty good. However, ordering fresh food was an eye opener to the true quality of the food and now I question how old their produces are.

This is a hidden gem of a hole in a wall! Unpretentious menu sticks to the basics but execution is perfect. Generous portions of fish great flavors. Price point is great!

I'm surprised this place is so highly rated. In the world of cheap conveyor sushi, it's just ok. Nothing jumped out at me. In fact, when I ran across a photo I took of my meal, I couldn't remember what or where it was, and I ate there two weeks ago. It's missing many of the sushi standard options, but their offerings are ok if unremarkable. Very pleasant service; well worth tipping if you don't usually at these places. Sushi Myogi further south on 82nd is a much better version. Parking is rough. There are way too few spots for all the small businesses that share the lot, and most of them are tiny Asian restaurants, so it's packed at lunch.

The tuna (or whatever that is inside) tasted about as good as it looks here.

Writing this review after we just stopped eating our takeout. We "stopped eating" instead of "finished" because it was so gross. Actually, the salmon avocado roll and the California roll we ordered were pretty good. So was the inari. Ikura sushi was middle of the road. Both the Spider Roll and the Pacific Roll were bad. I can't remember the last time I threw out food, but we ate about two bites of each and agreed we couldn't eat them. The Spider Roll had a disgusting, bitter taste to it. I think it was fried in, maybe, very old oil? I order Spider Rolls like this a lot and never had one taste like this. The Pacific Roll has, I guess, canned tuna inside, but it really, REALLY tasted fishy. I had an extra bite of this, but there was no way we could finish it. Last thing: when ordering takeout off their website, the thing defaults to a 10% tip, which is nuts. There are buttons for prefilled tip amounts -- none of which is 0%, which I want because I am not tipping for takeout -- so I had to click "Other" and type 0 in. When I clicked Complete, however, the confirmation screen shows that I tipped 10%. Going back, I found that I neglected to click "Apply" after typing 0. My bad, I guess they get my 10% for a meal we can't eat.

Are they still conveyor belt , is there happy hour?

Does this Kura have touchscreen ordering?

I don't remember seeing a touchscreen. We ordered directly from the chef if we didn't see what we wanted on the conveyer.

Is this restaurant still open?

Some may have considered it spicy. There are several rather intimidating sounding spicy ramens, looking forward to trying something more adventurous next time. Both were delicious, lots of toppings, perfect egg, and noodles with just the right bite. The service was very nice, the restaurant is simple, and quite lovely, sorta Pac NW/Japanese decor and style. They also have a good selection of sakes and make their own rather interesting pickles in house.

Parking along the busy street or nearby off streets between the housing. Let's start with what was great: The staff was very friendly, attentive and quickly sat us down with booster and high chair. Drinks (IPA and a Calpico) came out very quick as well as the Tabor tofu (3). The food was good. We had the Tabor tofu (kids enjoyed) and x2 Kaiyo Tsukemen. The dipping ramen came out with a nice jammy soft boiled egg and the noodles had a pretty good chew. The sauce was a bit thin but had that good seafood umami flavor. Pork belly was well portioned and had a light char. Overall, decent place to eat. Had to dock stars because out of the 4 items we were hoping to get for dinner, they did not have 3 available (fried Ota Tofu, Blistered Shishitos and Umami Mazemen). Maybe they were super busy early on but we were there around 6:45p so surprised menu items were not available. The staff was quick to apologize and worked quickly to get a 2nd Kaiyo Tsukemen out for us when the Umami Mazemen was not available. Wish we could've tried those dishes as I think it would've been a better complete meal. Kids still enjoyed it and our plates were empty so food was still good. Good amount of seating inside, utensils and water are self serve and looks like it could be a fun spot during summer months if they are able to roll up the garage doors!

This was easily the standout dish and the reason I would come back. Veggie Roll (5/5) Good portions with thick avocado and a solid mix of sesame, carrots, and cucumber. Fresh, clean flavors and very satisfying for a simple roll. Smoked Salmon (5/5) Good, thick pieces with nice smoky flavor. Fresh and well prepared. Overall, the food was consistent and high quality across everything we ordered. Service (4/5): Good overall, though it felt like there was only one hostess working during the rush hour. Because of that, things moved a bit slower than expected, but the staff was still polite and helpful. Ambiance (3/5): There are tables in the main dining area, bar seating, and more tables in the back. It works well for groups and families, but I would recommend making a reservation during busy hours. Parking is the biggest challenge. It is very tight and limited, especially when the restaurant is busy, which adds some stress before you even walk in. Great food and worth the visit, just plan ahead for parking and wait time.

I was looking for food nearby and came across this restaurant. The food was surprisingly delicious! We ordered the chicken katsu curry, kama-age udon (hokkai miso soup), and the kama-meshi seafood. The chicken katsu was cooked perfectly: crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside! The sauce also was the perfect texture and taste. My favorite was the kama-age udon with the hokkai miso soup. I love udon but sometimes don't like how thick it is because it fills you up faster and is harder to digest, the udon here is thinner which I fell in love with! It's soft and chewy and the perfect thickness: you dip it on the soup when you eat it. I also loved the soup, I usually have leftover soup when eat noodles, but I finished every last sip! Definitely recommend this dish if you were to only order one item! We also ordered the kama-meshi seafood. I thought this one tasted okay! The flavors of the seafood come through, but I personally like stronger and heavier flavors. It was worth a try! Parking: This restaurant is in downtown portland so it was difficult to find parking. We ended up parking at a nearby garage and paid for parking. They do have a few street parking spots near the restaurant if you want to test your luck! Seating and service: We were seated really quickly as we went on a weekday! They have several tables and a large table that can be reserved as well as bar spots. The restaurant overall looks really nice and is pretty spacious. The servers were really nice and fast to get you what you need! A side note: they have heated toilet seats in their restroom so that's always a plus!

This restaurant was perfect! Their decor is really cool, with plenty of seating at the sushi bar, the beverages bar, booths, and a small patio courtyard (not much of a view outside, though). Service was good & quick, with a variety of servers bringing us our dishes. We started with sharing a sake flight (3 very different sakes for $22), and later ordered another glass of sake to share. For our food we had the seaweed salad, Bo Gyoza (long pan-fried dumplings), grilled Mackerel fish, a side of rice, and the "Tampopo" Omu-Rice dish. Everything was cooked perfectly & absolutely delicious! The Omu-Rice dish was quite unique, with small pieces pork & veggies atop a bed of rice that's been seasoned with ketchup, and on top of it all is a perfect fluffy Japanese egg omelet - so freakin' yummy! The food comes out in whatever order it's ready, as is typical at a Japanese restaurant, so if you want something first, be sure to let your server know. Prices were reasonable, especially considering the high quality of the ingredients & preparation, which was a plus. They don't take reservations, so depending on when you arrive there might be a wait (I think they used to take reservations but their website currently says they do not). There was no single incident that explains what happened. Instead, it was a series of interactions that became increasingly dismissive, hostile, and ultimately humiliating. The first moment that gave us pause came when my friend's ID was returned so carelessly that it landed on the floor. The server then walked away without explanation, only to return and inform us she would not be serving us drinks. Being denied a drink was never the issue, though the manner in which it was handled felt abrupt and unwarranted. When we attempted to understand the concern, there was no effort to communicate, clarify, or review the additional identification we had available, including a passport. Instead, the interaction became increasingly adversarial. We were told we could cause the restaurant to lose its liquor license and were ultimately instructed to leave. At that point, it no longer felt like a conversation about identification. It felt like a complete breakdown in professionalism and basic respect. Before leaving, my friend calmly asked to speak with someone in charge. She was visibly upset, holding back tears, but remained composed throughout the interaction. Rather than attempting to understand or de-escalate the situation, another staff member escalated it further, becoming confrontational and referring to her as a "bish." I have worked in food service and understand that mistakes happen. Portland has no shortage of exceptional restaurants. I would spend my time and money elsewhere. 0/5
