Kashmir was my first introduction to Indian food many, many years ago. It was where I first fell in love with naan, mango lassi, pakoras and samosas. It was also where I first tried chicken tikka masala -- the most basic of English-style Indian dishes yet so good. It will always be a favorite. Yet it had been far too long since I last ate there, so I was happy to go back when my sister and I walked by, fragrant curry and spices pulling us in. We immediately got a seat outside on the patio, and bonus: The staff was fine with us bringing my pup, Millie, on to the patio to eat with us. Millie laid down under my chair, and the staff also brought out a to-go tray filled with water for her. It warmed my heart and made me excited to spend time at Kashmir. We started our meal with the garlic naan. These pieces of baked bread were large and heavy with the garlic, which I enjoyed. And before we knew it, our entrees had come out. Like at other Indian restaurants, the entree comes in its own dish with another dish of rice on the side. The tikka masala was flavorful and full of spices, as expected. I feel like in the past, the chicken had been marinated in the sauces for longer -- the chunks of white meat didn't have as much flavor as they have before. But still, this was filling and delicious -- an excellent choice for comfort food. All in all, Kashmir's food is four-star delicious. While I bet there are restaurants that prepare Indian food better, I've never had anything at Kashmir I haven't enjoyed. We noticed that the staff was quick to ask the bar next door to turn their music down when it got a bit loud. We were very appreciative of this fact. The service was also quick and courteous. With all of the other restaurants on Bardstown Road, it seems that Kashmir gets overlooked. But it's definitely worth a try and taste. read more

Came here for dinner with some friends. The food was delicious. The rest of the experience was...strange. We were first seated at a table, expecting to have a larger group. But as it turned out to just be 4 of us, they moved us to a booth (not that anyone or any large group came in during the time we were there to take over our original spot or elsewhere in the room). Our second table was...uncomfortable to say the least. The booth seat was apparently the heating vent for the entire room. The ladies on the other side of the table were slightly warm from it, the friend and I actually sitting on this bench were almost literally baking. But we were just interested in eating and chatting, not having to be moved *again* and being a general nuisance. Besides that, service was ok. A little absent-minded, but our food came and we ate it. I cannot say enough GREAT things about Kashmir! My husband and I, along with several friends, were incredibly bummed when they closed for several months due to a kitchen fire. They re-opened in January next door to their previous establishment, just 2 weeks before our move to California. We managed to get in 4 times (2 dinners with pals, take-out and a lunch with co-workers) before moving. Secured in the cooler, our left overs even made it to the Hyatt Hotel in Oklahoma City! Part of our support and routine patronage is due to the rapport we've developed with the staff! They are incredibly friendly, one fella is somewhat socially awkward but warmed up to us even going in depth with the meals and menu options when we branch out. Living in the Highlands, we would frequently stop by or wave on our walks along Bardstown Road - just to say hello! The atmosphere is similar to other Indian restaurants; we enjoy sitting out front on the patio. While the lunch buffet allows for an opportunity to try other things, It is usually not what I'd order for dinner. The fellas staff it well but I feel Kashmir best showcases its talents during dinner. 9 times out of 10 - I order the "Shaheeh Paneer Korma, Mild" (cheese instead of a meat, in a spicy/herbed cream sauce) or Chicken Korma. This dish is seasoned very well and the chicken is always cooked properly, no bones. - My husband orders "Chicken Chili, Hot" - never any complaints! - We have the bread basket with garlic, spinach and regular nann. - A second plate of rice is always brought out upon request and if we pace ourselves (ha) are able to save some for the next day! - Occasionally, I'll get rice pudding for dessert. It is always tasty. - Like most Indian restaurants, they only serve beer and wine. Price: $30's. BOTTOM LINE: We have traveled a lot in the US, ALWAYS trying Indian food. While we have been impressed with appetizers at other establishments we have yet to come across Korma or Chicken Chili as tasty as Kashmir! When I visit KY later this month, I will surely stop in and say hello to the fellas and lady of Kashmir! I hope you too will find Kashmir and your experience as enjoyable as we do ours! read more

I did not eat here for several years, because I am a huge fan of Dakshin. But what keeps me coming back, especially with my mom is the proximity, which is what is probably what is keeping them open. They have a great outdoor patio that overlooks mid city mall, and is great on any night of the week to people watch. Their indoor seating leaves much to be desired. Their carpeted space is worn and torn and their tables are haphazardly placed.. you would think if you had a second chance to rebuild, you would do it a little better? I'm not sure if this kind of thing bothers other people, and it might not bother me as much, if other things made up for it. Their menu is not lavish, or detailed. It is very straight to the point, and includes a lot of common dishes (like tikka masala, or vindaloo), while including some vegetarian dishes that are not on other menus (like aloo palak). Their prices are comparable, except for the additional $2 for rice.. I am always pleased with the dishes I order. On a side note, I do not like paying $1.50 for 2 pieces of papa-dam though... I do think that is a rip off. And not to compare, but at other Indian restaurants in the city that dish is complimentary, as it should be considering they are cheap to begin with. for $1.50, they serve you 2 thin pieces with 2 bowls of chutney and tamarind. This is confusing. I would love to gobble up all those dips, but how can one do that with only 2 pieces of papa-dam? I have found that the past two times I have been here in the last year the service has not been great either. Last night, I will assume he is the owner, or manager since he is always there, came to our table to take our order, he received a phone call at the same time and proceeded to answer it at our table and take their carryout order over the phone as he stood in front of us. I thought that was really rude. Not to mention, they didn't give us much time to sit and enjoy our overpriced appetizer. Then our meal was served in 10 minutes or less, which is not an issue usually, I just felt the since of urgency... like they didn't really want us to feel comfortable or linger. The servers made me feel like I was asking one of my teenage students for extra rice. He kind of rolled his eyes and then placed the rice in my empty naan basket upon returning. I'm not sure how they stay open, aside from serving more than ok food, being in a prime location and having an outdoor patio. I'm not sure I will return and give them my money. I'd rather go somewhere where I feel welcome and comfortable. read more

It took me a while to get around to going here based on mediocre reviews, online and off, but after finally trying this place I can't say I disagree. I'm so glad I went with a friend who is into sharing food! I ordered the Tikka Masala--as it is my barometer for solid Indian cuisine. Yes, I have slight shame in saying that as it is one of the most Americanized dishes on any menu... Anyway, the color of the Tikka Masala sauce matched that of a overly vibrant red dye job. It was much more tangy than I'm used to and just didn't quite match up to what I like Tikka Masala to taste like-- my real barometer is the Indian dishes I had in London. My friend and dining buddy for the evening told me it was supposed to be really good because the owner actually taught of friend of his how to make it and it was a multiple hour process. Hmmm. That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed my friend's choice which we ended up splitting 50/50: Malai Kofta, which is vegetable balls cooked in a creamy raisin and cashew sauce. Also, the nan we ordered, which came out as just one big ol' slice we tore apart, was fabulous. It was "stuffed" with spinach and hints of ginger, but those ingredients are actually nicely and subtly woven into the bread. I do like the fact that this is a house converted into a restaurant because there were three different dining rooms, so the noise level was pretty quiet despite there being 4 or 5 groups of people. There's not much ambiance indoors, but the outdoor patio is quite charming in the way of Bardstown Road street side patios. Will probably go back for that if nothing else. read more

This is one of those "don't judge a book by its restaurant decor" situations. If the weather merits it, sit outside. The inside isn't very attractive but they definitely know how to cook Indian food. Service is ok, they are not very friendly but they are prompt. That was probably the biggest downside. Food was fantastic! I had the chicken tik masalaa, great flavor. Also tried the lamb curry which was good as well. If you like garlic, order the garlic naan which had actual whole pieces of garlic. Be prepared for some powerful breath when you are done though! Ordered this while in quarantine after wanting to try it for a while. I usually get the same thing at Indian restaurants (though I'd like to expand my horizons if anyone has suggestions). Chicken tikka masala... I was impressed at the portion size (though always seems I can eat on it a few times). They ask for your level of spiciness which it seems is different from other places I've had in the past. This could be a perk for someone who prefers more heat... sometimes chicken tikka masala can be rather sweet. I got mild and it was the perfect level for me. Chicken pieces were large and plenty. All in all a lovely dish that I would order again and again. The only reason not a 5 star would be the naan I got wasn't the best I've ever had, compared to others. read more

My daughter and I ordered the chicken tikka masala and saag paneer with a side of naan. This is the first time I have ordered from this particular Indian restaurant. And after sampling their food, it shall be the last. Tikka masala is a pretty simple dish flavor wise. If the spices aren't balanced properly, you will be able to tell. And I was definitely able to tell. The overall flavor profile was bland. The masala sauce itself was very watery and a garish red color that indicated food color was used. The chicken was a bit on the tough side. The saag paneer was watery. And the naan was well, naan-inviting. The only exciting thing about this experience was watching what we initially thought was a homeless man urinating in public behind the restaurant. This guy came around the corner of a shed near where we parked, looked at me, smiled and said, "It's cold out here!", and then turns his back to us and urinates on a wooden shed behind the restaurant. Long story, but apparently he either works at the restaurant or is related to someone who works there. I'm really hoping he's not a cook. read more

New to the city and was craving an Indian buffet. Came into the dimly lit, seemingly unorganized restaurant where I was not greeted at the front desk, but rather I had to walk around and find someone to help me. My wife and I were sat down, given waters..then we waited for what was next. We asked "we'd like to do the buffet", the waiter waved his hand towards the buffet. No drinks or other specials were offered. The waiter and other staff just seemed disinterested -- and this was a Tuesday early afternoon where they were not slammed with customers. So really there was no excuse. Food was decent (6.5/10), although the saag paneer had no paneer left in it. At $12 per head, I'd say I might* consider this place for take-out but will never step foot in the door again. read more

I am not quite sure if this is gonna be a biased review or not, since over the years I've became friends with the owner and his workers, oh well. I've been coming to this spot since I've been in Louisville, little over half a decade and counting. It was my first experience with Indian cuisine. We had indian Resturants in Berlin that I just never had the urge to visit, regretfully. My favorite two times to go are between the buffet hours (1130-330) which is perfect for someone that would like to try about 70 percent of the menu. And late dinner time (main reason is dining out on the patio and enjoying the sunset) Some folks say that this specific Indian restaurants cuisine is too Americanized, which I disagree (I've been to 20 different Indian places anywhere between Chicago and LA) and all over Louisville. Food tastes amazing. Remember, every Indian place is gonna have a different taste Based on what part of India the cuisine is influenced by, so when doing a comparison, compare Apple to apples. Just to be clear, I am not a vegetarian, I do enjoy my steak and grilled chicken breast. However, when visiting this place I turn into one. The vegetarian dishes are delicious and the two that I eat (every single time) are Nav Ratan Korma and Plain Saag, in that specific order. Of course, I do like their Chicken Tikka and the Naan (one of the best naans in town) and their homemade yogurt, which is perfect to calm the storm of spices that you just ingested. We ordered the Chicken Jhalfrazi (so good and tender!) and the Lamb Saag (really juicy!). I would definitely order from them even after all this is over. I give this place three stars because the service is consistently sub par. The waiters seem pretty unfriendly and off putting. When I came in around 12:30 today, I stood in their foyer area for about five minutes before anyone came around to seat me. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to seat myself or wait. They also seated me at a booth that had a vent right under it, so it was continuously blowing hot air up into my face as well as on my legs. Not super pleasant. However, I can confidently say that the food is always delicious. Usually I get chicken tikka masala and rice with some kind of appetizer. Today, I decided to try their lunch buffet! It didn't have a ton of stuff but it had enough that I, personally, liked. Therefore, I decided to give it a try! They have plenty of vegetarian options, rice, meat, fruit, salad, plain naan, onion chutney, and a few desserts. Not sure I can vouch for the freshness. In the hour that I was there, I saw the naan replaced once and I saw a gentleman dump more chicken into the tikka masala instead of replacing the pan of food entirely. Despite that, it is a buffet. I expected as such. Not sure that I would recommend this place to others despite the food being good, but I will most likely visit again myself because of the closeness of the location in relation to my home and work. read more

I have loved this place going on 17 years. I went in college all the time. Moved away. Then I would come back and the owner would remember me and just bring masala tea without me even asking. 12 years laters, I have moved back. I still love the buffet. I love coming in at dinner. I adore their veggie korma and saag recipes. I honestly do not know of another place that makes those dishes this way. This place feels like home. The lunch buffet is always fresh and priced well. Staff are always so nice and efficient. The dinner menu has so many options and levels of heat. All the dinners come with yummy sweet onion chutney. And the masala tea is better than any other place I have tried. It is not perfect all the time, but 80-90% of the time, it is. Love their consistency. read more
