This morning Kat Keys saved me from having to purchase a new deadbolt. They miraculously had a used "core" for my discontinued model which matches several other doors on the property. Keys would not turn in dead bolt on old door (1920's house). Called Kat Keys due to good reviews. The young man who came out used a dremel to open up the hole on the strike plate and sprayed WD-40. He got the key to turn easily, charged me $145 and I was happy. Until the next week when it wouldn't turn again. I called Kat Keys back and explained the situation on the voicemail. I got a call back from the young man himself telling me that I got him in trouble and that he has no recollection of even being at my house, but he eventually agreed to come take a look at my problem. Once here, he remembered the earlier visit, he changed out the lock so it uses the same key as my other door, but still had to charge me another $145. He said that if I continue to have problems, call him directly and he'll take care of it no charge. He said if I call the office again they will have to charge a service fee no matter what. The next day, the lock wouldn't turn again. I called the worker on his cell, he came out that afternoon and explained that these old locks are really difficult. He opened it up again, said he found the problem and put it back together. It seemed to work, he said there was an 'extra part' jamming it up. He showed me a spring that he took out, saying this was the problem. I asked if he put a new spring in, he said no it was just in the way. He left no charge. Now, not only will it not turn with a key, but the knob on the inside will not turn either. My dead bolt is now useless, and I'm out almost $300. I will not call Kat Keys again. They sent the same inexperienced technician out to address a problem that was over their head to begin with, then insist I get charged a full service fee when they screwed up the first time. I would love for them to come out and fix my door, but I do not trust them to provide experienced service, and I'm afraid they will charge me even more money for a third visit when I've already overpaid. read more

My wife and I have used them when we first moved in. We were able to make copies of our keys no problem. However, when I went today at 11am to make copies for our cat sitters, the man who came to the counter looked at me and then my keys and said "I need a letter of authorization". I explained I've made copies with them in the past and other places, and have never had to show letter of authorization. He says nothing and just says I need a letter. Neither was a "Do Not Copy". Sounds like someone was way too lazy because it was an hour before close. Never using them again! read more

So I went to home depot after calling them to ask I'd they can cut keys they said yes they could. They put the key in the machine and it said it was a car key which it is not.It s mailbox key.So I left Home Depot and drove to st paul Kat Keys and they made me three keys in about two minutes.I should of went there first they can do anything.Super fast service always with a smile read more

Boo! My friend and I walked in here to get a duplicate key for her 2000 Toyota Camary. First off, there was a guy sitting at the counter talking to a women behind a key making factory looking area (literally, there were rows and rows of keys on the back wall behind her - so random). They simply couldn't be bothered by the fact that we had just walked in the store and continued their conversation about keys: Guy: "what do you do with all those keys that people don't claim?" Woman: "Oh we donate them and give them away." Guy: "that's a lot of keys." Woman: "yep." Me: What?? Finally, another guy stepped out from a back room and asked if we needed help. He wasn't looking at us so my friend asked, " do you mean me?", he then looked at us and nodded. We went to the counter, handed over the key and said we needed 2 duplicates. He proceeded to tell us it would cost $65. Okay, why, will it cost $65 per key? The only thing he said was because of the precious metals inside. It took all my strength not to laugh. This wasn't a FOB, this was a KEY with PLASTIC around it. Precious metals? We asked what kind of precious metals. Guy 2: "Oh, you know, palladium, titanium. . .. " Us: "so why does it cost $65?" Guy 2: "because it has electronic parts. .. " Us: "okay, but why does it cost $65 for one key - it's not a FOB and it's not electronic" Guy 2: " It's $65" Us: "why is it $65" Guy 2: "the metals and the electronic parts start the car" AND with that, we took the key back and left. What in the world was he talking about? This is a KEY not He-Man's Master of the Universe power-sword with the power of Greyskull in it. l also found it a little odd that they did have a million keys hanging out everywhere in the store. This place is great to sight see for keys, but not so great to get a car key made. I almost wonder what it would cost to get my house key made. It probably would be $30.00 due to the fact that it can tell the time or something. Maybe they know more about safes and locks rather than keys, but I will NOT be going here when I can go to Home Depot and get my key duplicated for $5.99. read more

Classic small business storefront located in downtown Saint Paul. Kats seems to be family operated and some of the family members may be more known for their customer service than others, but all of them were willing to help, and were knowledgable in their craft. I purchased a gun vault from Kats and got way more of an education from the employees than I was able to get at Cabelas. Their prices were also comparable to the big boxstore, even with the higher quality levels. The final endorsement I can offer came from another area locksmith who didn't have the type of vault I was looking for. He offered only one recommendation...Kats Keys. read more

I have used this location quite a few times in the past. Always helpful, always prompt. Also, the down vote on this site by one user should really be removed.
