Working downtown has its perks: walking distance to EVERYTHING, including my beloved Tru Spa, and everyone at the coffee shops and restaurants move at lightning speed. Unfortunately I don't work downtown anymore, and with my new work schedule and wedding planning, it's difficult for me to get down to Tru to get my facials. Luckily, I found Kate through the magic of Groupon, and she recently just moved to Bamboo Salon, which is TWO BLOCKS FROM MY HOUSE. TWO BLOCKS. TWO. Her online reservation system is super simple, and with a few clicks, I scored an appointment for microdermabrasion/facial. She's very sweet, and does a careful job on my face. The downsides are that she's in a small room off to the side of Bamboo, so you can hear what's going on outside where the nail chairs are, and she doesn't do waxing, so I'll be sticking with Erika at Bare or Tru for my brows and Brazilians. Kate's also way cheaper than most other places in SF, so it's a win for my wallet and also a win for my face! read more

I just had the BEST FACIAL EVER. I got a groupon for a Microdermabrasion facial. Having never done it before I had no idea what to expect. It was SOOO much more than just a microdermabrasion. It was heaven. There was a blueberry acid peel, then a facial massage, then the microdermabrasion, then extractions, another face and shoulder massage, one of those insanely expensive fabric masks, another face massage, pure oxygen facial and then I was done. I floated out of there never wanting to put a drop of make up on my face again. But the best part? The amazing Kate, of Kate SPA, showed me the pad from the microdermabrasion. She was like, look at what I got out of your skin.... OMG. It was amazing. On the tissue was a little fluffy pile of dirt. About the size of a dime, beige in color... It was truly an alarming ton of crap that had previously been in my face. IN. MY. FACE. Seeing it out there in the world was glorious and liberating. Now, I wash my face twice a day. I have one of those clarisonic brushes. I am currently on a two mask a week pre-wedding regimen (both interestingly enough, green) both of which detoxify and clean out my pores.I know they do. I see the difference after I use them. But I also live in a city filled with cars and people and all their gunk, and I haven't yet started wearing a Hazmat suit when I go out in public to protect my skin (the thought has crossed my mind.) I expected to wash the makeup off my face when I arrived (like other microderm places), but Kate told me that was what she was supposed to do... she started by cleaning my face, multiple masks, warm towels, microderm, more cleaning, extractions, more masks, etc. I would go back again and again. Don't take me wrong - i rather would leave a good feedback as i liked Kate. However I feel that I do need to share my unfortunate experience with microdermabrasion performed by her. I bought the coupon on amazon - value $100 and I paid $50. Microdermabrasion was advertised everywhere as a procedure you take during the lunch break, and did not come to my mind that there might be any type of risk involved. I gave all information in detail about the cosmetics I use - some of them were exfoliators already. Kate and I agreed that she will spare the area around mouth and eyes (rather dry skin) and concentrate on cheeks where I have rather oily skin and open pores. The very next day my skin erupted - it was so red and itchy that I could not sleep all night. I had to go to the emergency room and was not able to go for a work the whole week. I called Kate and sent her photos. She offered to give me money back but also instructed me to go to the dermatologist. I did not take money back as I did not care at all about any money. I just wanted to look normal and be able to work. ER and dermatologist cost me several hundred dollars, which is of no significance here. I researched a bit internet after this incident and found out that microdermabrasion should be performed by medical person. Kate did call later to ask about the status and recovery, but then again she could not help. What I really did not like is that she told me after microdermabrasion (even without my skin erupting) that I would not see much improvment as my skin is already exfoliated and I in general did not need the treatment. Especially I did not like the fact that after I sent her the pictures of my skin all red and bloated and asked her - why did not she warn me. Her answer - ' You took the chance' (agreeing for the treatment just on the cheek area). I used Cortisone and my skin healed after 10 days or so. To my horror I noticed some new wrinkles, as the skin cracked on very sensitive area around the mouth. So sorry, but I feel that I need to issue some warning. It might be that I had this problem and nobody else will ever experience the horror I did. But just to let you know, that things can go very wrong. read more

Girl has magic hands. Prepare yourself for an hour of luxe facial massaging bliss. The extractions were a bit painful but that was the be expected. Everything else was so great and enjoyable that overall was still an excellent experience. I was already planning to give Kate 5 stars afterwards but then I accidentally left my phone at the spa. (I was the last customer of the day) Not only did Kate give me a call back around 10PM, she kept the phone safe all day and didn't toy with it despite the fact it was going off all day. Some places really don't allow you to really enjoy a facial as relaxation but Kate is so gentle yet efficient that the whole process is just perfect. She also asks questions to find out what would best benefit your skin and see what areas you may have concern with. I told her about some of the sun spots I have and she applied some vitamin c product she had to help with the issue. At the end of the facial she did not pressure me to buy more and was really nice with a simple "I hope to see you again soon." I bought a living social deal for microdemobrasion and oxygen facial and Kate was awesome!!!! The procedure is fantastic for anyone who wants brighter looking, renewed skin. Involved, cleanse and exfoliation, followed by the microdermabrasion, extractions, mask and facial massage, then oxygen facial and serum application. Her equipment is excellent, everything was clean and working perfectly. Products for the exfoliation and mask and serum smelled great and felt great. She was good with extractions - thorough but did not cause me pain. She gave me heads up like "this might feel cold or tingly etc" but at the same time I could just drift away with sounds of sea and birds music. The room itself is comfortable and soothing and it was both a great facial procedure with awesome results and a relaxing experience, which is somewhat of a rarity nowadays.
