When I was an undergrad over a decade ago, I would only come here for the lunch buffet, and it was my favorite lunch buffet to go to. Fast forward to now, my husband, sister, and I decided to come here for dinner because yeti restaurant was closed. For those who haven't been in here before, the best way I can describe this restaurant is dark. Paint is dark, booth are dark. Everything is kind of moody and dark. Definitely not my kind of aesthetic, but does that really matter for this restaurant? No. The service is always fine. Staff is always friendly enough and fast. When we got the food, we were pleasantly surprised, like I said before I have only eaten at the buffet here and that was over a decade ago. While we were eating, we noted that we actually enjoyed the flavors here more than we enjoy the flavors at yeti restaurant. Something about the blend of spices just fits our palette more than the other restaurant. We found that there was an adequate amount of food, they didn't skimp out on meats, and we were overall really happy with our meal. Is it the best Indian food I've ever had? No, but it was really good by Davis standards and consider considering that there aren't a ton of Indian places in the Sacramento area. I think this might be our new go to Indian place now! First of all, this spot gets a bad rap sometimes and I think it's because people are used to a certain regional Indian cuisine and people don't realize the variety of the Indian subcontinent. Kathmandu Kitchen is named after a city in Nepal, so it should be no surprise the food here is Indian and Nepali. While I can't speak to the flavor or authenticity of their momos or other Nepali staples, their curries are extremely delicious and distinct from other Indian restaurants and recipes I've tried. I think the first thing you might notice is that a lot of their curries have a touch of sweetness, and pretty much all of their curries have a consistent texture. They do an amazing job making each curry silky and rich and flavorful. Every dish tastes fresh and unique in their own spice profiles and marinades. I highly recommend the paneer tikka masala, chicken makhani (very similar/the same as butter chicken I think), kitchen masala, and basil curry. Also, their actual restaurant experience is very nice too. The staff is very courteous and professional. The restaurant is large, vibey, and clean. There are two reasons I don't give Kathmandu a 5 star. The first that both me and partner almost always need to add salt to the dish. I could see why someone might write off Kathmandu if they went a few times and wrote it off because they never tried adding salt to their dish. The second reason is that the spice level isn't as consistent as I'd like. Sometimes, asking for medium spice level results in almost no heat, sometimes it borders on too much. Sometimes getting hot spice level is hot but enjoyable, sometimes it's very hot even for me. Mild is consistent but Id guess that's because they simply don't add extra hot chili powder or something like that. Overall, I highly recommend this spot if you love Indian food and want to try some Nepali spins and flavors. read more

Tonight is the second time I've been here, and there's a reason I came back. Aside from the fact it has good reviews on Google, I remember enjoying the food and the quiet atmosphere. Today was the same. I received great customer service, the food and drinks arrived promptly, and the food was delicious. I ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala ($17+) traditional style (?) which was an additional $6.95 and it came with some yogurt based side, a mixed veggie side, a soup side, and cucumbers, along with 4 large pieces of naan. I wiped that tray clean, with the exception of the yogurt. I also ordered a mango tequila sunrise martini for $8. I ordered another meal to go (same) for my bf. My total came out to over $61. For about a $35 meal with added drink, I am so content and left full. I would absolutely come back. Would like to see it on a busy day though. read more

This is our go to for Indian food when we are at home (in Woodland, this spot being Davis). My wife and I love their butter chicken, and they've got pretty good rice and naan. We have both dined in and taken to go orders. They have good service and the ambiance is dim lit and intimate. They've got great sauce and you can order extra (price) which I've done and used for my own chicken at home. Davis scene has changed a bit since Covid, but good news is that Kathmandus food has remained good. Recommend. read more

Looks like Kathmandu chose not to engage with the City of Davis for its really awful G Street redesign and pricy outdoor dining - what a waste of City funds and what an imposition on the creativity of the merchants. I think this place could have potential. Interior is clean and private. However, the food is quite lacking. My veggie sampler's main entree were the momos and samosas. I have eaten at Kathmandu for a good 15 years as I used to work in Davis. I always order the same item: Chicken curry, MILD. Today I'm visiting from the Bay Area and decide to get an order to go. The person who takes my order repeats what I said. Mild? Yes, MILD. I pick it up and head home, 50 minutes away. I go to place the item in the fridge and notice it is VERY watery...like a soup. I', thinking, this ain't right. The curry is always thick. I taste it. Damn spicy.....and watery. &*^%$# Expletives! I was initially off put by the location and lack of people inside the restaurant, but this hole in the wall spot deserves more recognition! The portions were huge and the sauces had a ton of flavor. NEPALI SAMOSAS: 4.5/5 The filling for these was delicious and seasoned with the right amount of spices! The green chutney was my favorite and added a surprisingly spicy yet fresh kick to the somosas. The pastry reminds me of empanadas, so I would definitely try the vegetable samosas next time I prefer flaky samosas. Nonetheless, these were still amazing. The sauce of the tikka masala was rich and creamy. I do wish the tikka masala had a bit more flavor with the spices, as it tasted a little mild. Gross. Don't eat here. I was served raw chicken. I called the owner to let him know not because I wanted to complain, but because I wanted him to be aware so that it doesn't happen in the future he responded with. I don't care that the chicken is raw. I don't care what I served to the customers I have over 100 customers a day. I don't care what one person thinks. I ate a piece of it and my stomach is hurting now. I'm praying I don't get severely sick. The county has been notified after posting a picture on social media. The main comment people wanted me to do was report them so that's what I did. Kathmandu Kitchen is a pretty great spot for Indian food in Davis. Their menu has all traditional items you'd want. I tried the Chicken Tikka Masala and Goat Cheese Naan. Overall, pretty satisfying and flavorful. Everything complemented each other well. The chicken in the Tikka Masala was a mixed bag, however. Some pieces were dry and some were cooked well. Outdoor seating is plentiful and staff provides great customer service. I do recommend this place if you're craving Indian food. read more

However I also recently doordashed their lamb biryani and I didn't like it too much. I think there were too many vegetables and too much masala that it didn't taste like biryani anymore. Kathmandu has always delivered amazing Indian food that hits the spot everytime that naan and curry craving hits! With the whole Covid-19 situation, I've been getting Kathmandu delivered through doordash. HUGE, huge compliments to Kathmandu for being so flexible - we had a huge doordash snafu where they sent two dashers to grab the same order, and Kathmandu managed to work it out and sort out the situation. We got a huuuuge variety of goodies: Naan: We got both the garlic naan and the normal naan - so delicious. So fluffy and hits the perfect spot! Vegetable Samosas: Ya'll - get this! Yummy potatoes, peas, and nuts enclosed in flaky, puffy layers. They're also huge and easily twice as large as a normal samosa! Special Jumbo Appetizer: We always get one of these - it includes pakora, momos, and tikka! Kathmandu makes the best momo's, hands down, and I'm always thinking about them! Chicken Tikka Masala: Amazing - the creaminess and spice in this is always a favorite! We also usually get the thali so we get the dal, naan, basmati, chutney, and veggie curry of the day with it!
