We drove pass this place many times and finally decided to give it a try. Why? It was almost 7:30pm, we were very hungry and Cafe Raj was too crowded. As we walked towards the restaurant, we could literally breathe in the smell of aromatic spices from the kitchen. Yeh, we thought we made the right choice. Luckily, it wasn't too busy and we got seated right away. I've only tried Tibetan food once at this restaurant in Berkeley but hubby never. After a short 5-minute discussion, we settled with: Appetizer #7 - Chatamari (soft rice flour bread stuffed with lightly spice chicken, potatoes and nine varieties of beans served with tomato achar) The texture of the rice flour bread was similar to the steam rice noodle ("ju cheong fun") at most dim sum places except this was thicker and nothing special without any stuffing/sauce. Nonetheless, it was appetizing when we ate them together. Too bad the garbanzo beans in the tomato achar were undercooked. Otherwise, it would be a pleasing side dish. Of course, hubby devoured the last bite of chatamari prior to the real deal. We picked one lamb entree - Luksha Shamdeh (Tibetan style lamb curry marinated in yogurt and spices cooked with potatoes and herbs) The dish was savory but not the best lamb curry I've ever had. Without the sauce, I think I could taste the gaminess. The waiter brought us the pickle onions and mint yogurt sauce as condiments. The pickle onions were too sour to my taste bud whereas the yogurt sauce was lack of flavor as if something was missing. The chicken entree - Kukhura Poleko (chicken marinated in spices for hours and charcoal-grilled) was da bomb. The grilled chicken pieces were tender crisp and well seasoned. All dinner entrees are served with saffron rice and roti (hand rolled bread) and dishes can be ordered a la carte for $3 less. To sum it all, the restaurant has a friendly and warm atmosphere nicely decorated with Himalayan pictures and scrolls. If you have a chance to try cinnamon, banana or strawberry lassi, do let me know how it tastes. It is definitely not a good place for a group of more than 4 people. The good news is they cater for private parties and free delivery with a minimum order. I was surprised to read the highly rated reviews but would probably come back to try the momo (steam dumplings) since most Yelpers raved about it so much. read more

If you know me at all, you know I average (AVERAGE!) a 70-hour week--what with my full time job in California, my part time job in Utah and my volunteer (read: "collecting good karma") gig. And, then, you might also know that many of my social engagements seem somehow to be connected to work lately as well. Tonight, for example... instead of going out to dinner with my (much-missed) friends, I took my employees out. The experience was so fantastic and pleasant, I almost forgot that I was at a thinly-veiled work thing masquerading as a social outing. On our table: lamb curry, chicken momos, a dish with 19 different varieties of beans and salmon with tomato achar. Every bite was fantastic! The curries were the proper blend of spicy, savory and bitter, the basmati rice was fluffy and filling, and the naan was warm and house-made! Delicious! The proprietor is also the host and server.... and somehow involved in the goings-on in the kitchen. He is wonderfully attentive and nice, with a great sense of humor. At some point, he found out that a few of us at the table like really spicy food and brought out a dish on the house. *SO* spicy and yummy! And since my favorite flavor is "free," I was, of course, completely won over. I really LOVED this place. I enjoyed the ambiance and the service was attentive. There was only one couple in the restaurant when we arrived around 5:30pm on a Saturday, but four more arrived shortly after. It's a small place, but there were plenty of tables open. I was particularly glad to see it was family owned and operated since 1994. My girlfriend had been there once before and was suggesting it, but I really wanted to try a Northern Chinese place up the street. My GF convinced me to check out the menu for Kathmandu first. I was immediately sold as I walked up and started smelling the spices and food. Wow! I said to myself, "I just have to try this, it smells too good to pass up!" I had never had Nepalese food before and assumed it would be nearly identical to Indian food I've eaten. Based on this experience, I say that Nepalese is MUCH better. It's similar, but different enough to be unique in my mind. After just one visit to Kathmandu, I've changed my mind as to what my favorite kind of food is...it was THAT good! My girlfriend and I started with the Lamb Momo (meat dumplings) and the traditional lentil soup. Both were really good, but I particularly enjoyed the Momo with their "picked" relish-like condiment. We then were served two different Lamb dishes (#2 and #4 on the Lamb section of the menu, if I remember correctly). The first thing I noticed was how good the cuts of meat they used were. The lamb was very lean and tender. Definitely, the best lamb I've had in a long time. I had the #4, which was the lamb cooked with green peppers in a spicy sauce. Oh yea, SPICY indeed! I loved it! We also had the "chia" tea (not chai). OMG! To DIE for! I had to order a second pot. And the banana lassi! Absolutely delectable! It was the best lassi I've ever had; light, flavorful, FANTASTIC! I might have given four stars instead of five because the desert was a bit bland and seemed like it should have been warm and not cold (just thawed from being frozen cold). It was the #1 on the desert menu (honey soaked fried dough), but I can't remember the name. I'm not familiar with this cuisine, so maybe that is the intended way to serve it. The rest of the food was so exceptional, however, I decided to overlook this and give them five stars anyway. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone. My brother told me about this restaurant and I decided to give it a try . I have to say it was one of the more enjoyable meals that I have had in Albany. It is a family owned and run business and was treated really well. Service was excellent. My favorite were the Chicken Momo's. These delicious steamed dumplings are definitely worth trying. They are like steam pot-stickers, filled with spice marinated chicken... Definite order. For main course dishes, I had the Kathmandu Specialty. This particular dish consisted of a thick curry of nineteen varieties of beans cooked with tomato, cilantro, ginger, garlic, and green onions. Delicious! I asked some friends if they wanted to go out for some Indian food and they suggested something similar but also a bit different--Nepalese and Tibetan food at Kathmandu Restaurant on Solano. I'm so glad I followed their suggestion. I stuck to veggie items: momo dumplings as an appetizer and the Kathmandu Specialty: a delicious curry stew with 19 types of beans and garlic, tomatoes, cilantro and lemon juice. Fabulous. My friends had two chicken dishes: Emu Khaya La, chicken with jwanu seed, garlic, ginger and herbs, and Jhasha Shamdeh, where the chicken is marinated in yogurt and cooked with onion, tomatoes, potatoes in ginger, garlic, and spices. They said their dishes were excellent. We also had strawberry and cinnamon lassis to drink, which were fabulous. I loved this place. I am getting hungry again just writing this. My fiance and I love this place! By default, we've ended up here two valentine's days in a row. It's not particularly romantic, but the food is so tasty and there's never a wait. On a cold day, the lamb momos and the thukpa (spicy lentil soup) really hit the spot. To be honest, we're usually so full at that point that we barely touch our entrees. So I'll have to add more about entrees at a later date. We really come here for the momos. I dream about those momos. I loooooved this place! The ambience is adorable! There are lots of pretty thangkas, pictures of mountains and cool statues. And nice colors and lights. The service was super friendly, and the food is really authentic and homemade. The Thukpa was the best I've ever had. We also had the momos, which were really good. Lots of tasty sauces, the lamb was also the best I've had - very tender and mild. The rice pudding was also delicious. I basically can't wait to go back and try everything else! Know that the food is made from scratch and made to order so it's not super fast, but it is fresh and high quality. I don't write many reviews, but I love this place and want to see it continue. On the other hand I like that fact that there are no lines and it is not packed with people. My friend and I have been here twice. We are both introverts and health oriented and flavor oriented. This restaurant provides all. First thing is the authentic atmosphere of the place. You really feel like you have left Albany and could be on vacation in Tibet visiting a small restaurant. Second the service. On both visits we were helped by a very nice man. If you are in a hurry, trying to get to a movie this is not a good choice. (You are in Tibet, remember? Where things slow down and warm tasty food is good.) Come here when you can take your time. Place your order and while you are waiting share a pot of Chai tea that tastes like they ground the ingredients on site. My favorite dishes were the meat stews: Khashi Ko Ledo Shekuwa - boneless lamb marinated in herbs sauteed with green onions, fresh tomato, green peas and cilantro cooked in tomato sauce. I have been wanting to try this place ever since I moved to the East Bay last year. I had a quite satisfying meal, and I am ashamed to say, do not remember the name of several of the dishes I had. I ordered 3 appetizers,the Lamb momos, a potato pancake, and a rice flour burrito'ish aloo dish. Piggly wiggly could not finish the whole meal. The highlight of the experience was my charming and friendly family host Daryn. He explained the family owned business history in the area, the picture on the menu of him and his brother when he was about 2, dressed in their traditional Nepalese attire. He informed me that all the paintings on the walls, and the tapestries are hand painted by Nepalese artisans, who are no longer alive. He said you can not find that level of quality and craftsmanship anymore. Daryn also shared the family is celebrating the 20 year anniversary of the business, and the father made a special home-brew beer to celebrate! He offered me some, but I am not a drinker. If you are interested in home brew Nepalese beer stop by soon! Also, Daryn shared that all the family business are donating 10% of all sales to the victims of the 2 earthquakes in Nepal. There is an email list he is gathering for future fundraisers to continue to send support to Nepal after their devastating 2 earthquakes. My very first exposure to Nepalese food was here at Kathmandu. I was expecting something very similar to Indian food. At the end I was pretty surprised to find out the spices and herbs used in Nepalese cuisine are really quite different from the Indian or Chinese counterparts. The style of the food might be quite similar to Indian (curry style dishes that go with rice or roties) but the taste is very distinct. Momo (4/5 Stars) - Steam dumplings with lamb, chicken or vegetables fillings. We picked the lamb ones and they were really good. Moo Wo (3.5/5 Stars) - Not as good as the momo but still very delicious. The Achar sauce that came with it was awesome. Lamb Rib Chops (4/5 Stars) - Nice tender meat with nice unique flavors from the charcoal grill. Highly recommend this. Luksha Shamdeh (3/5 Stars) - A bit ordinary in my opinion. It is a curry dish with a Tibetan twist. Satisfying with quite a kick (very spicy) but did not blow my mind. Jhinge Machha Ko Ledo (3.5/5 Stars) - The tomato based sauce was definitely more interesting than the curry. The prawns were nicely seasoned. It is worth trying at least once. Quite spicy as well. Bhanta Tarkari (3/5 Stars) - Kinda similar to Jhinge Machha Ko Ledo but with vegetables only. I am a meat lover so I would perfect seafood or meat dish anytime. Good family style restaurant with friendly services. My only complaint is the weak ventilation system. After a while the whole dining room was infused with the spice and smokes coming from the kitchen. My eyes were irritated. read more

This wasn't quite as good as I remembered it. Nonetheless, I think it's a special, homey restaurant with the best Tibetan/Nepalese food I've ever had. I've most enjoyed the meals here when I've ordered them as spicy as possible. I don't know whether it's authentic, but sometimes this cuisine can seem a bit bland without the peppers. Ordered as such, this is one of my great food memories of Berkeley (especially the potatoes with asparagus in dry mustard sauce). On this trip, chicken momos were excellent. The shrimp pilau was really tasty. The 19 mixed beans didn't seem sprouted like they used to be and weren't as flavorful--was not so impressed. The potatoes with asparagus was good but again, not up to my memory--needed to be spicier. The salmon in tomato curry was a disappointment--just wasn't flavorful enough. I was glad to see that REAL Tibetan food is different than the food ethnic Tibetans in Sichuan eat (roasted whole animals and whatnot). The food at Kathmandu is kind of like a marriage between Indian and Chinese stir fry... The momos are essentially Chinese dumplings (or bao) except they serve them with different sauces. We also had the Alu Wo, which is basically a potato pancake dish served with the same kind of sauces. Yummy! For entree we had a lamb curry dish, a salmon curry-ish dish, and a chicken dish that's kinda like a chinese stir fry but with "salsa" like relish on it...all were very good. I'm especially a big fan of the salmon dish. It was cooked just right, loaded with flavor, seared crispy on the outside, tender juicy on the inside...mmmmmMMMMMMMmmmm too bad it's so far away...else I'd love to go back and try the other stuff! read more

With so many great restaurants in the area, I have passed this place many times without any consideration of dining here. I was surprised when my sister suggested it for dinner one night over other seemingly much more exciting places. BUT! I was quickly sold on the place once we sat down. This is the only Nepalese food I have ever tried so nothing to compare it to, but it was delicious. I'm not sure what the reviewers calling it flavorless are thinking - the food was seasoned nicely with interesting spices and the dips/pickled items were a nice touch. This place is family owned and operated, and you can feel the love in the food and the service. There are many Nepalese restaurants in the Albany/Berkeley area. Then, there is the Kathmandu Restaurant. By far, the most delicious South-East Asian food I've ever tried. The food is authentic and flavorful. My favorite dish is Kukhura Ledo Shekewa (most people would probably refer to it as chicken curry.) The chicken is marinated with a mixture if house made spices and sauteed with organic vegetables. In addition to the entree you get: basmati rice, dall (lentil soup), and roti (hand rolled bread.) For dessert, I had a Nepalese honey cake that was sweet and rich. It went well with my chia tea. The restaurant provides for a great atmosphere. It is decorated with traditional Nepali objects. Nepalese folk songs provide the soundtrack for a great meal. The service was excellent. The food was on time and my glass was refilled before I needed to ask. Whether you are looking for place to take your family or a date, the Kathmandu Restaurant is an excellent choice. read more

My husband and I both got the vegetarian curry--obviously fresh, had great texture, which is a treat after mushy curries so many other places--and the potato roti, which may be my new favorite meal. I went with my friends and my wife to dine at this place after a long day of traveling (a party of four). We went in and asked how long it would take for our food to get served. Surprisingly the owner/waiter said don't know!! For real-you cannot give me an estimate!! I ordered some chhyang (fernented rice drink) as we expected to wait for about 20 mins. The lady brings me a small wine glass of chhyang while I asked for the bottle (12-16 oz). As I asked why I was getting a small wine glass of chhyang, she had the audacity to tell me that she did not know know to seal the bottle; thats why she brought the small ass wine glass drink. As I asked the price difference she tells me that both cost the same, but she brings me the small ass drink knowing that I wanted the big one. So, she wants me to buy a small portion for the same price? That's straight cheating, and she tells me that with a straight face!! Also they ran out of rice in the middle of serving our dinner and she tells me that she can't make new rice because it's hard to make it.!! For real!! This is some unreal shit!! The customer service is awful. I had come here in 2013 and had the same type of customer service. This shit is run by a husband and a wife and they don't give a damn about customer service. I came back thinking that things had changed in 5 years, but no. I could have gone to Mount Everest restaurant in Telegraph which is close by and I go there often. It's awesome up there. But, my stupid ass had to give this restaurant a second chance. Never going back to this place again. Thanks but no thanks. Overall- 1). Customer service-0/10 2). Food-4/10 3). I went to Kathmandu last night for the first time and I was very satisfied with the food and the service. When I looked at the menu, I was overwhelmed by the number of tasty vegetarian dishes. So, I ordered the vegetarian combination plate! The combination plate was around $12, which is a little pricey for vegetarian food. However, the food is made to order (as opposed to simply reheated) and you can request how spicy you want your food. The restaurant is very small and cozy and the atmosphere is very warm. The staff is friendly and attentive. And most importantly, everything I ate was delicious. read more

I have been a couple of times and had a great experience and a great meal both times. The second, the host/server was especially attentive. he found out I like spicey food so brought out two additional very hot dishes to try. They were amazingly good. To clear the burn he also brought us the fermented rice drink which was the perfect complement. There are so many choices for us vegetarians it is really hard to choose. My first time in I had the zillion bean dish and loved it. The second time I ordered the vegetarian combo (after mommos for appetizer course, of course) and it was soooo good. Tasty food, attentive service, and a cozy little dining room decorated with Nepalese flair. The endearing waitstaff will delight you with their earnestness and genuine smiles, and the food is pure comfort. The portions aren't gargantuan, but then again, we come from the land of small stomachs and ended up with a box of leftovers to take home. I kept eyeing the cinnamon lassi but got the strawberry instead, thinking it might offer a better balance against the tastiness of the main dishes. Next time, Gadget...next time. read more

Kathmandu will always have a special place in my h3art...(fade out to blurry memory scene) It was nearly three years ago and since i'm so awesomely lololicious i know all the best places to eat.... (fade back into story teller) So, Solano Ave - all those lazy summer days of the Solano Ave festival or something like that led me to Kathmandu. anyway, so i discovered this place during one of those walks along the Ave. Every time I've been it's always been pleasant. The food is Tibetan = kindof indian & chinese-y hard to explain but gosh darn good. (Pan to table with food, focus in on dumplings, soup, and rice, next, pan to happy couple rubbing stomach with painfully happy grins....) cut! Anyway, so to finish the story, i brought the bf here on one of our first dates, maybe it was the second date... yummy food = good impression = "this girl's hot!" we ordered the chicken momos, a curry dish w/ rice, the lentil soup and a strawberry lassi to wash it all down. We ordered far too much, couldn't even leave the last two bites, we had to take it... so we're walking down Solano Ave and all of a sudden i get a whiff of the curry from dinner.. "ew" you think, but actually, my date is suffering from slight food coma that he spilled onto this shirt while holding the take out box so close to him! Very Very funny! (but maybe it was one of those you had to be there moments...) At any rate, the food is great, parking can be a b*tch, but it's darn well worth it! I always find the service to be "normal", meaning not fantastic (but i like that, it's a low key kind of place) but not horrible - since i think the people who serve actually own the place.... My experience here was kind of meh. The food was ok, the ambiance was ok, the service was ok. The chai was great. For the quality/quantity of the dishes, the price is high. The vegetarian dish I ordered was flavorful, but was $10 and 80% potatoes. You can't fool me, I know how cheap potatoes are... We probably would have walked away mostly satisfied if there the most OBNOXIOUS group of people weren't dining there. They took over about 1/2 the restaurant and acted like they had rented the place for a private party. I couldn't even hear my husband across the table. My friend choose this place when she was in the Berkeley area one day. Since we've never had Nepalanese food before, we decided to try it out before going to watch the Vagina Monologues. It's a small restaurant and it seemed like there were only two people that day - the waiter and the cook. We got there kind of early (about 5:30pm) but later on, the place started getting packed. There's a lot of decor in that small space. My friend ordered a banana lassi and I got a strawberry lassi. Both us of enjoyed our lassi. Yum yum! We both ordered a chicken dish. My friend was wondering how spicy the dish would be so she ordered it as a 6 level spiciness. Her dish had a lot of onions and it wasn't spicy enough for her so she didn't enjoy it as much. My dish was good and it wasn't too spicy. Our waiter forgot to ask us if we wanted rice or roti with our entrees so he ended up giving us both rice to go with our meal. I wasn't expecting a lot of rice to go with that meal. My friend asked for roti instead and he wasn't mad about it (maybe surprised). I was hoping to come back here again last weeked with my husband before we went to a play but never got the chance. He seemed to liked the food I brought home. This may be my most favorite restaurant I've ever been to. My girlfriend and I happened upon this place after a long walk one day. The place is rather small, though it is probably never seated to capacity. The decor is indicitative of Nepal/Tibet. It's a very intimate environment. The service is wonderful. On the occasions I've been there, there were only the one server and the cook. This, however, does not lend to slow service. Another person working there would probably crowd the small kitchen. If you've never experienced Nepalese/Tibetan food I would say it is similar to Indian food but a lot less pungent. The best part of the menu is that it's very accommodating to carnivores and vegetarians. I can't remember what I've ordered there other than a main dish of lamb but all my food has been delicious as was my vegetarian girlfriend's dishes. The server gave me a free bowl of lentil soup as he recognized I was a new patron and wanted to impress me. I was impressed. You must factor in that I generally avoid lentils. There is a fermented rice beverage that my girlfriend had spied him serving to friends of his one day. The next time we went we got some. It's not on the menu. It's definitely interesting and packs quite a wallop. Vinegar is what wine will turn into so think of this beverage as the stage prior to rice vinegar. Overall, this place is a must. We came here yesterday for dinner and had the lamb and chicken set dishes that came with soup and on the menu advertised to have yogurt sauce, tomato, and pickles. The plate came out with none of these things but three slices of raw carrot. It was a very basic dish with protein, rice, and potatoes. I was disappointed with the vegetables which were just potatoes and disappointed that the dish didn't come with the things that were advertised. 36 dollars for dinner for two dishes after tip/taxes. We stumbled upon Kathmandu when we were in Berkeley to see the Bone Room and the East Bay Vivarium. We were looking for a place to eat lunch, looked at a few menus, and decided on Kathmandu. And what a pleasant surprise it was! To describe the deliciousness of their momos (I had the vegetarian ones) would be...impossible. They came with a sauce and we tried them along with the lentil soup and -- holy moly were they good. Next time we're in Berkeley, it's Kathmandu for lunch for momos and lentil soup. I always start with momos for an appetizer and then order a few dishes to share with my friends. One of their specialties is a dish made with many kinds of pulses. It's like a very complex and flavorful dhal. They sometimes run out of it late in the day. Prices are a bit high, but it is well worth it (especially since they often bring out free side dishes). This is such a cute little restaurant, and with great food. The server was friendly and helpful and when I asked for very mild food he was super attentive and also helped to show me which sauces would be too spicy for me.
