Why 5 stars? Because it's hard to ask for higher quality. --- --- --- As soon as I saw Kat's Barbecue pop up on Yelp's Top 100 list for 2019, I knew that I would be visiting in 2019. I grew up in Friendswood and would absolutely be visiting on my next trip to my parent's house. My parent's actually tried to earlier in the year, but they ended up being closed for renovations at that time. Then we tried visiting the night before, but they ended up being sold out and closed early. For attempt #3, we were sure to arrive 15 minutes before they even opened their doors on a Sunday and ended up being 3rd in line. My mom and I arrived first with my brother and sister-in-law en route. The menu was small enough that I literally said - "we'll have one of everything." That's usually just a corny dad joke I say at restaurants, but in this case, I was maximum-level serious. The highlights in terms of the meat were the ribs and the brisket. The ribs were truly fall-off-the-bone and the brisket was as juicy as one could dream of. I could not see myself returning to Kat's without ordering these two things. Maybe a BBQ connoisseur would scoff at this statement, but I don't notice a ton of variance from place to place in terms of sausage and pulled pork. So this isn't an indictment on Kat's - but the pulled pork and sausage was just as tasty as it usually is at most BBQ restaurants. By far, my favorite was some sort of special creamy bacon pasta salad. That should definitely be added to the regular menu! The rest of the sides were pretty average. I was most disappointed in the mac-n-cheese, a side very synonymous with BBQ. This was just pasta salad that seemingly had been dipped into a thin layer of cheese juice. I think a creamier, heartier mac-n-cheese would be an ideal addition to Kat's. I also couldn't help myself and tried out the banana pudding, which totally hit the spot for a sweet finish. I really loved my experience here and will definitely be back again when visiting family. The reality is that you go to a BBQ spot for the meat, not the sides and it lives up to the hype when it comes to the meat! Be sure to call ahead and make sure they are open before driving out to Santa Fe, because they obviously have built up quite the local fan base here! read more

OMG!! One of the absolute best tasting pieces of smoked brisket and ribs I have ever eaten (I've eaten a lot of BBQ). After just one visit, Kat's jumped straight up to the top two or three on my list of all Texas BBQ joints. Kat's does not sacrifice quality for quantity. They only sell BBQ until it is gone. I had the brisket, sausage, and ribs. All of them are wonderful. This is a 'must try' place if you are looking for excellent BBQ. I promise this review is unsolicited. This is a up there on my list of great Barbeque spots.The plates weren't skimpy and the price was a bit high but a small price to pay for excellent bbq.I had the brisket and pork ribs which both were done right..the brisket was tastey and tender...and ribs were a bit dry but very good as well.The sides were great I had the potato salad and that was excellent never had a better potato salad in my life...the mac and cheese was good also just a bit thick in my opinion but still very good....the pickles were made in house and the bbq sauce is made in house as well and very good and has 3 types of Home made sauces (regular,Spicy,and Sriracha bbq). First time going there I recently moved into the area and I'm trying to find the best places. They have a great attitude and we're really welcoming . It's a nice place to eat real food made by real folks. "Mama" knows what she's doing in the pit. I liked the sauce it's a little on the sweeter side and that's what I'm into. The real winner here to me were the ribs fall off the bone but not dry with good hardwood flavor. The brisket was also killer but for me the ribs took 1st. I can't wait to go back and try more. It's an order at the counter, pick it up when your name's called place. Their 5 stars rating is richly deserved. Their BBQ is some of the best I've eaten and I've eaten LOTS of BBQ. I try almost any place that opens. I had to drive 20 miles but I wouldn't have missed it. I almost never give a restaurant 5 stars the first time but it's so far away I may not get back anytime soon. I had their Pork ribs -- falling off the bone tender. Wonderful taste. I used to judge BBQ cook-offs and I can't remember any better. I'm not a bread pudding fan, but I've had delicious bread pudding at BBQ places so I tried their. I won't do it again, but I was here for the Barbecue and that's all that counts. If you're anywhere nearby you must go here. It's high traffic but the service is fast. UPDATE: I happened to be in the area so I returned to kat's.
