    Hot dog w/brisket
    Melissa C.

I read an article last year [I think] of all the yummy hot dogs in Galveston and i finally had one This "koop dog" was huge and YUM-ME!! Big link with mac & cheese, brisket and pico. Soo yummy to my tummy! Go get you one!!

Who is this responding PJ? I would never want to hurt a business in anyway be mindful how you treat people
    Ronda Z.

Then your 27 minute video would have showed Pj dropping our food off, he couldn't get away from the table fast enough, never did he return then you would see Kevin come up right behind PJ to explain to us that the food container were our plates separated them and even went as far as talking to us about our food. We can agree to disagree you can say whatever you want I know how you made my husband and I feel in your restaurant I have the right to share our experience. You didn't go right back into the kitchen you started talking to another caucasian lady that came in for a to go order. If you want share the whole video from when we walked in till we left go for it see what others think, the only person that acknowledged us and was kind to us was Kevin. Tarra if that's the case why when you came out of the kitchen you went straight up to that table and asked them how their food was and never came over to our table? Just be mindful how you treat customers. Why didn't you check on us? You interacted with several caucasian customers never came over to our table. Food was ok have had better. Service from PJ was awful but Kevin was amazing. It's a small corner restaurant. Coming from a customer point of view you should treat all your customers the same way despite color I witnessed Pj customer service with a white couple very professional but when my husband and I entered the restaurant there was hardly any eye contact with us he wasn't friendly at all he dropped our food off at the table and walked away several times he checked on the white couple joking with them but never once asked us how are food was or if we needed anything. My husband words were maybe he doesn't like interracial couples that's sad he and I both felt that way.

Brisket and sausage. Way too thick

I stopped in to bring home food for family dinner. The brisket was sliced so thick one pound yielded only 5 thick slices. I also got a half pound of sausage. With this they gave me 3 slices of bread and about one tablespoon of barbecue sauce. Good food but check your order before you leave. Spent $40. and had to buy additional food elsewhere

Koop's BBQ was recommended to my family by our shuttle driver as a great barbecue place. The restaurant is near our Airbnb, so our first day in Galveston we decided to give it a try. We went about an hour and a half before they were closing, and they were out of some items (like the mac and cheese and ribs) but our shuttle driver had said the brisket was really good, so I got the brisket with greens and stuffing with gravy as my sides. There was a variety in the meats and sides ordered by my family, but the portion sizes of all the food was huge! Even the banana pudding was overflowing the container. The greens have a kick to them, so I wouldn't recommend them if you can't handle spicy food, but I absolutely loved everything I had. The service was amazing as well. Everyone was really nice and the interior was clean and inviting, so we enjoyed dining in. My brother joked that he would be back for breakfast, but seriously, this is a great place with amazing food. I just wish I had remembered to take pictures of the food.

Just stop reading this and get there! This was our second time there, and we wish we lived right down the street so we could have Koops every day! Every meat was tender, juicy, and melted in our mouths. The sides were cooked to perfection. Lastly, banana pudding, tasty and a great way to bring the full meal together. Open maps, put Koops BBQ in, and drive there right now, and enjoy. Why are you even still reading this? Why isn't your face full of amazing BBQ!!!???

I still haven't eaten bbq since eating here, nor cooked bbq because Koops has set the bar so f'n high!!!

Pulled pork sandwich and pinto beans

Hands down the best BBQ we've ever had! I am very picky when it comes to bbq and this did not disappoint. I would gladly drive 5 hours just to come have some more of this. If you are traveling and are looking for some AMAZING Texas BBQ, look no further. The staff is super friendly as well! Literally nothing will ever compare, so do your tastebuds a favor and go try them out! Loved the atmosphere there as well, all the plants made it nice and inviting!

    1 meat combo with ribs

First things first, Koop's is a local favorite and is only open for lunch 11am-3pm Tue-Sat, get there early or you're guaranteed to stand in line or not have your first choice in what you want to eat. They were out of several things by the time we arrived at noon. Upon entering, you will find plenty of seating, clean bathrooms (with hot water to wash your hands!!!), and wonderful aromas! The gentleman that took our order was patient, informative and friendly. He said their most popular sides were the mac 'n cheese and the baked beans. I opted for a two meat (brisket and smoked sausage) platter with Brussels sprouts and beans. My other dining companions opted for a one meat (ribs) platter both with mac n cheese, one with baked beans and the other the potato salad. Let me start with the brisket, simply phenomenal! Legit melted in my mouth and the smoke and flavor was so delicious! The ribs were extremely flavorful and tender also. No bbq sauce needed for either meat! The smoked sausage was decent also, not as special as the brisket. Now let's chat sides, le sigh, let me also preface this statement by saying I don't believe I have ever been to a bbq joint or smoke house where the meat AND the sides were comparable. The same remained true at Koop's. All of our sides accompanied their meats fine enough but left a lot to be desired. They have a policy where if you rub the hog or something and don't like your side they will get you another. We chose not to do that. We did have a very upbeat and friendly conversation with one team member who informed us that we can bring beer in next time. One of my dining companions mentioned he was bummed they were out of nachos. The team member stated that they make their chips from scratch and are one of their most popular dishes and described the brisket queso they also make. Needless to say my dining mate made arrangements to return the next day for these fantastic sounding nachos. Long (er) story short, my dining mate picked up the nachos and they were nothing like described by the team member or depicted on their social media. That was a major letdown.

I have nothing but great things to say about this family owned business. From the moment we walked in to pick up our catering order, we were greeted with smiles and good energy. Mr. Koop was so kind and helpful. Our order was ready and fresh as soon as we arrived. The establishment is really clean and accessible. Most importantly the food was DELICIOUS! Here's what we ordered: Ribs - 5/5 Brisket - 5/5 Chicken - 5/5 The 5/5 doesn't do it justice because truly it should be 10/5

Walked in the door was greeted by I believe the owner was very welcoming suggested a meat plate that had everything very reasonable priced three sides and a dessert and drinks included. The food is amazing. Definitely worth every penny spent. We have leftovers for sure. Are y'all doing? Oh yeah we're staying down the road. We started eating the banana pudding right off the start because we knew we'd get too full and that wasn't a bad choice.

Wow! Excellent BBQ - served hot, fresh and tasty! We had the BBQ potato, BBQ sandwich and banana pudding as a side.

She asked us if we were picking up an order or dinning there. We told her we were eating there and she told us to sit at a table behind us. I noticed that when we walked in it was kind of small but it worked for us. We grabbed some menus to look at and then sat down. After we sat down the same woman came over and asked us what we wanted to drink. We asked for bottled water. She asked if we wanted ice and we said yes so she brought out the ice in cups and then she brought us our waters. Then she asked us what we wanted to order. We barely had time to look at the menu but we had an idea of what we wanted so we just ordered. I ordered a brisket sandwich and some potato salad. Apparently the meat comes separate from the bread and you make your sandwich. She asked us what kind of bread we wanted. White or wheat and we said white. I assumed we would get our bread first but we got it last. She brought the potato salad first. It was good. It didn't have big potatoes as it seemed more creamy. It had a mustardy flavor which I liked. The brisket was okay. It was a little dry but it was filling. The BBQ sauce was thin but good. Adding it to the brisket gave the meat a little flavor. The bread that they gave us was regular white sandwich bread slices. This came last to our table. We probably waited around 5 minutes for regular white sandwich bread after getting our potato salad and brisket. I tried one of the Riblets. It was small with a lot of fat and very little meat which made it hard to eat. Overall it was an okay experience. The atmosphere is small, the food is decent, and the service was just okay.

The place is really small, so I'd suggest getting your food to-go. For $21.50, we got the three meat plate (pic attached) For our meats, we got extra lean brisket (too lean, next time I'll get the Leon cut, ribs (really good) and white meat chicken (enjoyed this as well). For our sides we selected turnip greens (decent) and beans (not a fan). It came with bread and onions and pickles. The lady that took our order was very courteous and helpful. There's an article on the wall in the establishment about Leon the owner (pic attached). I've also attached a pic of the menu. All and all, this is very decent bbq and is very reasonably priced relative to other bbq places and other restaurants in general. Good value. I recommend you give it a try.

So when I was looking for a place to eat somewhere on our trip home from Galveston, I knew this might be my best chance. I'd originally planned on just ordering a simple brisket sandwich, but as I looked at the menu, I felt like I wanted one of everything. I was really tempted to order a loaded baked potato, but because I'd be eating it in the car, I figured that might be a bit too messy, so I eventually went with Plan A. One bite into that thing and I knew I made the right decision. It was so juicy and so flavorful. Just the perfect lunch for what I was craving. And then to make this love story even better, later that day, I went to HEB. My HEB happens to have one of those BBQ restaurants inside of it, and it's never open when I visit because I always do my grocery shopping in the morning. But this particular visit was at about 4pm. And I opted to order the exact same thing: a brisket sandwich, so that I could compare the two. I'm sure this is not news to Smokin Z's or their fans, but this was the most lopsided competition I've experienced in a while. My visit to HEB only made me appreciate Smokin Z's more, as the HEB version tasted like something made by my 11 year old nephew. I'm embarrassed I even put the two head to head, as we're talking about a totally different weight class here.

That being said, it had been some time since I've gotten some proper fish-n-chips. I had to remedy that. Especially since the BBQ fiasco the other day, I was going to go on a hunger strike, but once I made the sign, I got potato chip fingers on it and started to eat it. So, I decided to fight fire with fire, and figured I would eat myself happy again. Which I'm never mad about. Sometimes I make myself angry just so I can eat myself happy. And now, the rest of the story. I have learned that I enjoy Cod fish for my fish-n-chips. And I think also Haddock. I am not a fisher nor a fish. So it's hard for me to say. But I know Cod is one for sure. I also sometimes have baby mouth and am afraid of new things. I do know I love my fish battered and deep fried. I also know that Shark Shack had good reviews for their fish, so, that was all I needed to hear. Plus, it was a perfect little eatery with bar seating, table seating, and gifts! So you can bet your bottom dollar tomorrow I ordered the English fish-n-chips. Boy oh boy. Just like how Britain colonized all those countries back when it was the cool thing to do, these fish and chips colonized my taste buds. Respectfully. This plate came with FIVE logs of fish. FIVE! Maybe they were tubes of fish? Honestly, I don't care what shape they came in, they looked perfectly crunchy and perfectly brown and perfectly fish. The super cool extra bonus? These fish came with CRISPIES! I've only ever seen crisps with fish from Long John Silvers, whose fish is probably as far from Cod or Haddock as legally possible. I actually think one of my pieces of fish from there had shoelaces. Didn't matter. Still ate it. Respectfully. (If you aren't privileged enough to know what fish crispies are, there little batter pieces that fry or fall off the fish as they cook. Basically little crumblies. If you make a wish over a fork of them and get the forkful in your mouth without dropping any, your wish will come true). Homemade tartar sauce was good, but there was a certain flavor profile that I wasn't a fan of. It was still good to use on the fish rods, it just tasted a little too much out of the tartar sauce field for me. The meal was wrapped up nice and tight with lovely square-cut fries. Perfect doneness. Perfect Ketchup vessel. I could just stare at a pile of them all night. Mostly because I'm weird. I decided to lean more toward the 4-star side, so here we are. While in Galveston for a quick weekend getaway, we wanted to go out for dinner. Katie's was my first choice, but the wait was too long, so I pulled up Yelp to see what else was recommended. Shark Shack had great reviews, and when we arrived there was zero wait, so we went for it. The one area where I docked a star was the service. We were seated immediately but waited quite a while for our server to appear, and then even longer to get our drinks. I was so excited for a margarita, but when it arrived in a plastic cup, I was immediately disappointed. Plastic cups are for the beach and nightclubs, not a restaurant with a bar. And that's not where the awful drink experience ended -- it was so weak and just not good at all. Our server seemed so disinterested in everything: taking our order, answering questions, and when it came time to pay, we had to wait ages to see him and wave him down. The food was decent with no major complaints. It wasn't "blow your mind" amazing, but it was good. The owner -- well, I assume he was the owner -- came and spoke to us when he found out my husband was military, and he was really nice, friendly, and very supportive of the military community, offering a very generous military discount. That definitely raises the rating and is much appreciated, so thank you. Overall, the big fixes for me would be the service and the drink situation. I can't say we would rush to come back just because we love Katie's for the service, food, and drinks..

Daphne at the bar was super sweet and proactive in refilling drinks and getting food out on time! Also, the portions are ABSOLUTELY MASSIVE! I've never seen anything like it in my life at a restaurant. The amount food per dollar is definitely worth it. THE MID- I've seen a lot of reviews on how the food is fantastic. This is simply not true. Whatever those people were on writing those reviews... I want some of that! Seriously though, the food tasted like frozen food (I CANT PROVE THAT), and if it's not, then at best, it is seriously bland. When calling a friend later that night, I recall touting the restaurant as "The Target Version of Applebees". It's definitely better than an Applebees or Chilis... but not by much. In short... if I was rating on food alone... 2.5-3 stars. But the atmosphere and the omnipresent Tombstone on the TV cranks this place up to a 4. I won't be back, but it was 1000% worth it to go once.
