My 11-year old recently told us he wants to be a chef, so I googled "kids cooking classes Indianapolis" and Katsumi's was one of the top results. I remember hearing from another Elite Yelper friend how much they enjoyed her class, so I booked a Saturday morning "Intro to Sushi Making" class for my son and I. This is not a cooking class where you watch the teacher and then never make the super-complicated recipes again. Mori had my son do most of the food preparation from slicing veggies and mixing the matcha-glazed cake. Mori taught us about dining etiquette, different grades of rice and nori, and where to find the ingredients used. We also got to eat everything we made - we were very full by the end of class! We put together a retirement party for one of our friends at Katsumi's teaching kitchen. Mori has several different classes and you need to make reservations online or you can give her a shout. We were promptly met at her kitchen in Beech Grove, Indiana. She was smiley, funny and full of energy. There were no issues with the reservations and she fully understood this was a retirement party so she only booked who was in the party. We opted to do Japanese street food which afterwards we all got to taste. It was delicious. She encouraged us to bring Japanese wine and beer and of course that made the girls giggle a lot. She went over food preparation, and how to cook each meal in great detail all while explaining the history of the food we were cooking. Her kitchen was spread out and had plenty of room for all of us. It was a tremendously fun time. Everyone of the girls had a great time with lots of smiles. I think we will book it again for my daughter and her friends. It was well worth the money and definitely coming back. read more

We did the sushi cooking class for a date night. Although the class was entertaining it was a bit pricey ($$$) for a few spring rolls, 1 sushi roll each, cup of soup each, and a box cake in a rice cooker. However, we enjoyed learning so much about the culture. It's also nice that during the class you get to take photos of the brands and where to find them! The class is a lot of standing....about 2-3 hours worth so just keep that in mind. You do get breaks to sit and enjoy your food though. We will for sure be making spring rolls again after this class. What a fun class! I was a lucky winner from a Yelp Elite event that allowed me to take the Intro to Sushi Making class. Unfortunately my husband wouldn't join me so I went alone. I was a little skeptical as I don't like doing things by myself but Mori was warm and welcoming from the moment I walked in and a group of younger adults joined and they were all very nice. The class itself was very informative! I had previously made sushi at home and while it was tasty, it was nothing compared to the sushi made in this class! And I learned that I had been making things harder on myself! The class also includes a new way to cook a cake and boy, it is tasty! Soup is also prepared during the class--I wasn't a fan but others seemed to enjoy it! It just wasn't a flavor I personally enjoy. You will also learn to make spring rolls during the class and they are very good! I would definitely check this place out! I'm looking forward to putting my new skills to use ! read more

A couple of weeks ago an event popped up on Facebook to go to an open house for Katsumi's Teaching Kitchen's new location in Beech Grove. I thought I would go take the half hour tour and see what it was all about. I had read about the kitchen in I believe Indianapolis monthly. During the free tour Mori gave us a chopstick lesson and explain the differences between Chinese and their traditions, Korea and their traditions, and the Japanese, I can say that I am not very good at managing the chopsticks yet. During the free tour she also fed us cake that has a matcha green tea icing and gave us a new apron. I was impressed with her attitude and how well she answered everyone's questions. I decided to schedule a class for the following week. I scheduled myself into the Japanese street food class. In the Japanese street food class I learned to make yakisoba, okonomiyaki, and takoyaki. The class was a lot of fun. Each step of the way Mori shows you what to do and helps you if you need help with anything. Also we had the cake again at the end! The people that were in the class with me were all nice and looking to learn something new. I will say I got a bit warm in the kitchen with all of the skillets working and everybody in there. Mori provided everything we needed to prepare ingredients and also an apron to keep our clothes clean as we worked. Everything we made was very flavorful and she explained all of the ingredients and let us take pictures of them as she went along. I am confident that I can make these dishes at home and isn't that what it is all about? I liked the class so much that I have already scheduled my next class. I am learning how to make potstickers the third week in April. Come and give it a try and I think you will be glad that you did. read more

My husband and I love Japanese food so I was looking for a Sushi making class for Valentine's Day. And I'm so glad I found Mori and Katsumi's Teaching Kitchen online because it truly was a wonderful experience. Mori is absolutely hilarious and had us laughing the entire evening. She also shared with us her wealth of knowledge and we learned so much about Japanese cuisine and culture. The food we learned to make was delicious - the type of rice and method of preparation really makes a difference in the taste and texture of sushi. My son (14 year old) was gifted a sushi cooking class to Katsumi's. My wife randomly found it online, and what a GREAT FIND!!! Mori was extremely knowledgeable about her trade. She was extremely detailed with origins of the Japanese culture and cooking styles. They made spring rolls, sushi, miso soup, and white cake (from a rice cooker)!!! My favorite part of the class was my son was told where to go to get good sushi products and even recommended us take pictures of the products she used to make it easier for us to find them. We learned quickly the pictures were invaluable since nearly nothing in the Asian Grocery was in English. Eli just made his first sushi rolls today!!! My husband and I just took Mori's potsticker class and it was amazing. Mori was so nice and welcoming and taught us so much about her culture. She explained things thoroughly and told us where to get any ingredients we would need to make each dish. We made more potstickers than I can count, fried rice and cake. We tasted our food along the way and got to take everything home with us as well. I gave this experience to my Asian -food-loving daughter for Christmas. Mori was an amazing teacher and so fun! She is very detailed in her instructions and emphasizes the things you need to do in order to make your dishes taste authentic. She is so down to earth, and easy to interact with. We had a wonderful Valentine's date taking the Intro to Sushi class. We learned how to make sushi with Wasabi and yum yum sauce, spring rolls with peanut sauce, miso soup, and matcha rice cooker cake in our 3 hour long lesson. The food was fresh and everything was organized smoothly to keep us moving from one dish to the next. Everything was so delicious, and we even got copies of the recipes to try again at home. Mori did an excellent job at explaining exactly what ingredients and tools she was using so that we could copy them exactly when we got home and share her amazing cooking skills with our loved ones. Our favorite part, though, were her stories of cooking with her mother and the many do's and don'ts of becoming a "sushi snob." Attended the beginning sushi class here. We made Miso soup from scratch, California rolls and Spring rolls. Along with that we learned how to make peanut sauce and yum yum sauce to accompany the dishes. This is located in the old 'Airport Deli' building. Parking is a bit confusing as there are clearly marked parking places along the side of the building as well as a 'No Parking' sign. Park in the back behind the building. Class was a bit all over the place, which was actually quite entertaining. Along with the know-how of actually making these dishes, we also heard a lot of anecdotes, tidbits of life and culture in Japan, family stories and so on. So if you are looking for a dry boring how-to lecture don't come here. We were also supplied with recipe cards for every dish we made. And the low down on the best ingredients to purchase, as well as what to watch out for and what makes some ingredients better than others. Class did run over quite a bit, which is why I didn't give the full 5 stars. Wish I could just take off 1/2 star. Personally I will probably never make any of these dishes because it is very time consuming and expensive to make. And let's be honest, it's just so easy to go to a restaurant and have somebody else make it for you. I have however, a new appreciation for the art of Japanese cooking and will probably be even more selective with my menu choices. All in all I highly recommend taking a class here. Today my fiance and I took a sushi cooking class at Katsumi's Teaching Kitchen in Indianapolis! It was so much fun and so delicious! We made Sushi Rice, Yum Yum sauce, Wasabi, peanut sauce, Miso soup, spring rolls, California rolls, and a white cake with a macha and white chocolate icing! The cake was cooked in a rice cooker and was the most moist cake I've ever had. The California roll was better than any I have ever had before. Chef Mori was such an amazing teacher! We learned about Japanese tradition and manners from her as well as the cooking techniques. I really enjoyed hearing about her experiences and life and learning the tradition, history of sushi, and proper manners. I didn't even know that you aren't supposed to use a spoon to eat Miso soup. You sip it from the bowl and use chopsticks to eat the solid ingredients. She also showed us the PROPER way to use chopsticks and the manners you need to use with them at the table. My mother in law got this for us for a Christmas gift and we were just now able to use it. We loved taking the class! First of all Mori was fantastic. Typically you expect to go to one of these classes and just learn how to do whatever the class is about, but no, not this class. She also tells you some of the history behind what you are making (in our intro class this was regarding sushi) as well as the best places to get said ingredients just in case you wanted to make them at home. Secondly, Mori is a natural teacher. It's no wonder she used to teach Japanese! She makes everything very easy to understand as well as very entertaining too! There were so many times during our class that I was literally laughing out loud along with the rest of the class when she would tell a personal anecdote. She also knew how to appeal to most people of the world today by not only telling us to take certain pictures but she also made sure that they were worthy of social media posting by either setting up our picture for us or telling us the best way to show off what we just made. In the intro class we made a spring roll, a sushi roll, miso soup, as well as a cake with white chocolate matcha! Check out my pictures so you can see the rolls! My friend and I did the beginner sushi class and had a GREAT time making spring rolls and sushi! Mori is so entertaining to listen to. I enjoyed the history she gave as she explained things from the Japanese culture. It helps give a understanding as to why amazing flavor is worth the extra cost. I took my sister-in-law here as a birthday present. The 90 minute class (which ended up closer to the 2 hour mark) focused on teaching the basics: spring/summer rolls, California rolls, miso, and a Japanese dessert (we had white chocolate matcha fondue). I've made spring rolls and California rolls before but never through a class. Having completed the class, I'm very glad I did. Mori is a natural teacher and provided a lot of information that was accessible for those who don't know a lot about food and even those who do. She has a very practical approach to cooking - as an introductory class, she taught us about umami but was mostly interested in having us get good-looking food on the table without it being overwhelming. She was very encouraging, and I felt so empowered by what I had learned that I threw my own little sushi-making dinner party at home later that week. At several points during the class, she had a little photo op set up for us to take photos of our creations - which all 8 of us in the class took advantage of. What I liked best about the class was her advice on which food and cooking products were the best to buy (and where), and reasons for why certain products were better than others. As a white Midwestern girl, it made it possible for me to go to an international grocery store and know exactly what to get so that I could recreate good sushi at home. I cannot understate how valuable this aspect of the class was. Mori teaches other classes, and I plan on taking all of them. She also is working on getting together a Korean cooking class that I am salivating just thinking about. Her cooking school is relatively new, but I see her being here for the long haul. We had a lot of fun making Japanese food in a positive environment. She is the only Japanese food teacher in the state, and we are lucky to have her. I would not recommend. $65 for cake made from aldi cake mix, sushi using imitation crab, and hazelnut coffee mate creamer in our peanut dipping sauce because "she was too lazy to go and get real cream". Yeah $65 for that treatment. All she does is bash local sushi places and talk about how having a Japanese mom has made her an expert. These tactics are supposed to make you feel like you're having a special, authentic experience. I learned nothing a 5 min YouTube video couldn't have taught me. read more

This was lots of fun and we got a lot of great advice from Mori where to buy rice for sushi, how to make sushi and the advantages of a rice cooker. The class is very hands on and Mori is always there to assist. And, of course, we enjoyed eating our own products over the course of the class which lasts about 2 hours. I just took a intro class for my birthday with Mori and LOVED IT!!!! I have always loved sushi but have been scared about trying to make it. Not only was Mori very informative on tech and the history of Japanese rice and its preparation, she is hilarious. It was nice to have an instructor who was able to make me feel so comfortable with my own skill level, that I immediately ordered a rice cooker after class to start making sushi at home.
