Sometimes 5 stars just is NOT enough. If you ever find yourself on the south side, you have to check this place out. I have heard friends rave about Yokohama for years, but it always seemed so far and out of the way. Now I am kicking myself for waiting so long to go and it has ruined me for a lot of other 'sushi' places closer to home. Not convinced yet? Read on. The owner only uses the freshest fish that she used to drive hours to get almost daily to ensure it is the best cut and quality - and this shines through in the taste of her offerings. The downstairs space is cozy and intimate - but they do have the coolest 'party space' upstairs that you can rent/reserve complete with in-ground tables for an authentic experience. They will also set up karaoke up there if you ask! Back to the food. Our group ordered about 10 items - all of which were so good that I was super mad that I had waited so long to try Yokohama. We were fortunate to go with a friend that has been frequenting this gem for about 20 years - so he ordered for us - and this is the way to go! We had the Volcano, BMW, Fat House (SO unique), Indiana, Speedway, and Debbie rolls, Sake smoked salmon and super white Nigiri, the Gyoza app, and another seared tuna app that I cannot remember the name of - all DELISH! Of note, your GPS might take you to what appears to be an alley - don't worry - you're close! Yokohama is in a converted house space and the vibe is so comfy. If you get the back corner table near the fireplace, check for a hidden drawer under the table where you will find years worth of love notes tucked inside. Request 'the lover's table' to sit here! Pro tip: if it is not busy, ask if Debbie is available to tell you a joke or to show you a magic trick. You won't be disappointed. read more

This place is nice and can be a good option if you need quick sushi. But for a planned sushi date per se, I wouldn't recommend it. I throw three stars because I wouldn't come back again; personally I didn't enjoy the quality of the fish and rice. I found frozen ice bits in my sushi rolls and the size of the rolls are considerably large. On the plus side, the staff is welcoming and the place is clean and cozy. Don't let this place for you when you pull up. It looks like a house on the outside but it's very quaint inside. Our party of 13 enjoyed a side room with tables in it to celebrate our Easter together. I don't know if it's because we were a large group but half of our food came out and was very tasty. Those of us that received our food. The first round were completely done eating before the other half of our party received theirs. There's also looked different than the first entrées that came out. The yakisoba absolutely had no sauce whatsoever. two people did not even eat their food as they said it taste horrible. We asked for teriyaki sauce which they did bring out and they also charged extra for the sauce. The two individuals said it still didn't taste dry. When we asked the waitress why it tasted and looked different she said, because one was chicken and shrimp and one was just chicken. But they all were the same base which was yakisoba so that did not make sense. Our experience overall was mediocre. There were a couple of things that were outstanding. The sushi was extremely fresh and good. Hence the whole reason for this three star. I had been here a couple years ago and had a good experience, but there were only five of us that time. I would like another chance, but I just hated Family drove in an hour and a half away and they were the ones that did not get their food until we were done. The wait staff were very friendly. This is a cozy and quaint little shop. You feel cozy and content as soon as you sit down...I love it! We were seated straight away, and our server was polite and contagiously happy to see us. Our drinks were on the table within minutes and the order was taken shortly after. We had four dishes and each one was prepared with love and thoughtfully plated. The quality was above and beyond all that we could have expected. I enjoyed every bite and so did my guest. The Sushi Poppers were everything we had heard and then some. It had been a while since we had visited this quaint restaurant on Madison Ave. in Greenwood. It is contained in a converted charming bungalow with plenty Japanese appeal inside. The husband/wife team makes you feel comfortable and eager to sample their amazing dishes. Unlike many places, Yokohama' quality in food and service has not been altered in any way. My wife had a Bento Box with teriyaki beef. Oh my, the ribeye still is the most tender beef anywhere around. The box had an ample assortment of incredibly prepared Japanese fare. My shrimp and scallop dish was well prepared and the seafood, including the salmon was outstanding in this entree. We will visit again and not wait as long this time. What a wonderful experience we had here tonight. We were greeted right when we walked in, whom I believe was the owner. We were sat down at our table, and the waitress quickly came and got our drinks. I loved the vibe of the restaurant- old house getting repurposed into a new space. I ordered the Wafu steak, and my wife and mother ordered a bento box. The entrees came with a salad and miso soup...I've definitely had better ginger house dressing at other restaurants, but it was still good...I tried the miso soup but didn't like it- but never really have been a fan- the other people in my party said it was good. Man, the Wafu steak was so good that I had to contemplate if I was going to return the next day and re-order it. The sauce on it was super flavorful...I upgraded to the fried rice, and it was also delicious. Yokohama recently reopened after some bad luck with weather on Christmas. To say that their fan base missed them is an understatement! The restaurant is back and better than ever. Debbie and Scott are still the heart and soul of this place and you can tell in the food and fellowship in the restaurant. Our son is home on leave from deployment so our daughter who lives in Seattle flew home to be with the family. both kids love sushi so we went back to Yokohama's. It did not disappoint. The service again was outstanding. The ambience was very quaint and cozy. It's an excellent place if you want to carry on a conversation. We started off with the pork dumplings. All I could say is delicious. Then each of us ordered a variety of sush. The portions are huge and we could've gotten by with just two but we stuffed ourselves and took home the rest . The owner went through the menu with us and even offered some sushi that wasn't listed, one of those was called the Grinch. it is huge, not sure what was inside, but on the top of it was a firecracker shrimp that was absolutely delicious. Everyone had a great time and the owner was so gracious to spend time with us talking about Japan, Korea, and Taiwan where she grew up. This has got to be one of the most friendly and personable Japanese restaurants I've ever been to. I would highly recommend this restaurant if you love sushi. There was a friendly greeting at the door and we were promptly seated even without a reservation. We started with a drink. They served beer and wine along with soft drinks and tea. My husband had a nice sweet red wine and I opted for tea. My husband had the seafood hibachi which he said was good. I had a bento box with teriyaki beef that was amazing. The beer was flavorful and tender. It also came with 2 spring rolls, 3 gyozas, 4 pieces of California roll and white rice. There was enough left for lunch the next day. Both of the entrees came with miso soup and a side salad with that yummy ginger dressing. Service was fast and friendly and the quiet atmosphere was a great way to unwind on a weekday. The hours are a little sporadic, but I think that comes with the personal experience each visit comes with. The tables are really close but I promise you will soon forget once the food arrives. We ordered a standard California roll. It was good, eight pieces and thick. We also ordered the sweetheart roll. I expected it to be spicy and it was not. Great for tuna lovers. Want something off the menu? Order the Sushi Sundae. It's big enough for two to share. Maybe even more. It's literally like it sounds. We ordered the jalapeño poppers and the debbie roll and the poppers despite having spicy tuna inside you could only taste the cream cheese it was super over powering. The deep fried crust on the Debbie roll had a very stale texture. We asker for siracha and we were told they did not have any, later we asked for some kind other hot sauce and then they told me they had spicy mayo or siracha, I was a little confused since the other waitress had told me they didn't have any. I'm always down for some sushi, so my husband and I swung in here for lunch on a random day while driving through Greenwood. The server was very polite and we were seated right away for lunch, there was no wait at all! I love the vibe of this restaurant. It has a homey feel and very cozy. As for the food, I was pretty underwhelmed with the majority of sushi rolls we ordered. The rice was nothing to brag about, so that made the simpler rolls very bland (i.e. California roll). But the more decadent rolls with spicy mayo and sauces were able to amp up the taste a bit! Our favorite was the sweetheart roll! It even comes cut into cute heart shapes (order this if you're on a date!!). The prices were expensive for lunch (maybe we just missed the lunch menu? But it was 12 pm). I wouldn't spend that much on lunch again - this is definitely a dinner spot. We ordered 4 rolls and 8 pieces of nigiri and it was $90. Overall, I would go for the rolls with more ingredients/toppings and you'll be much more happy that way! I only tried the sushi so can't comment on the other food but it all smelled and looked good. Only critic would be the seating. Had such a great experience here! Came right at dinner time on a Friday evening and we're promptly seated at the sushi bar. The restaurant was busy but there weren't many folks on the front row of the action, where my boyfriend and I really enjoyed bantering with the sushi chefs. We started the meal with beer and wine, the wine selection being slightly better than the beer. Not a sake drinker, but they did have plenty of options there. Pro tip: if you check in on Yelp they have an $8 off $60 coupon, so knowing we wanted to use that, we proceeded to go a bit overboard ordering rolls. We got the Philly, Satsuma, Yokohama and Sweetheart rolls. We were a bit shocked at the $17 and $18 price tag on the specialty rolls, but it can't be stressed enough how HUGE they were. Even my boyfriend who can eat with the best of them was struggling to eat his fair share of these rolls. Had every intention on going to another place that had amazing reviews, but it was closed unexpectedly and we had need up here. Most of the rolls were decent, but the tuna roll just made me nervous. I understand the Rainbow Effect that can happen, but this wasn't that. It had a green cast to it, and for me, that is a no go. The best part was, the owner was offended and declared they only have the freshest fish in the area. He took it off of my bill, but you could tell he was extremely bothered.
