We ordered the white snow chilli cheese katsu ($20.75), red carbonara katsu ($22), and karaage chicken thigh ($7.95). It was my first time trying katsu drizzled in sauce -- which is nice if you enjoy lots of sauce with your food. Frankly, I much rather prefer the original katsu with traditional worcestershire sauce on the side because too much sauce leaves the katsu soggy. The Katsu still came in reasonably hot and not soggy despite being delivered. The breading is crispy and thin. Today, I went for dine in. All tables were separated with 2m apart. Katsuya provides a Japanese experience that is not so common around here. When you think Japanese food, your mind typically goes to sushi or ramen right? But Japanese katsu is a huge staple of Japanese cuisine that is so often overlooked in North America. I got the Spicy Garlic Cheese Katsu, which is a mixture of pork and mozzarella cheese. While it was good, I don't think I would get this one again. The cheese is a bit much for me, which may or may not be a good thing for others, but it was just a bit too heavy in an already heavy dish. The spicy sauce isn't spicy at all, it's crazy sweet actually which is off putting to me and I would have definitely preferred the one without sauce if I had known the flavour beforehand. Outside that, the katsu was delicious. I love the fried garlic, and along with the juicy meat inside of the deep fried exterior, it's basically a match made in heaven. Pricing is not bad at 21 dollars for this plate, which easily filled me up. They seem to have deals on cash and takeout which would put it at a fair price to even have for lunch. At regular price, I'd say it's decent for dinner but too much for lunch. Location is comes with parking which is always nice. Overall, I liked the food, and I'd definitely come again. While I have some gripes, maybe they can be remedied by ordering something else. Uuuuuum flakey deep fried goodness! Katsuya's batter is super flakey and crunchy. The meat is thicker than the competitors and portions are huge! My family ordered the carbonara, garlic chilli, silver brick cheese katsu, croquettes, kfc and fish katsu. The carbonara sauce has a bit of a kick, personally not my favourite but my family seems to like it. I prefer the garlic chilli because of the deep fried garlic on top. You can do without the croquette imo, it was slightly bland but I guess that's what the tartare sauce is for. We got one in loin and one in tender - tender meat is white ($1 more) and loin is dark - I prefer the loin, because tender was slightly dry. Both are all in all cooked well, moist and flavourful. The silver brick Katsu is cheesy goodness! and they make it a round, cylinder not a square brick like their photos, but very yummy! I think they make it better than what I had tried in Korea. Can't go wrong with korean fried chicken!! It was a bit saucy but it was finger licking good - if you like sweet, a little cinnamony chicken with a kick, order this. My fave was the fish katsu!! They are apparently used as bread crumbs but not for sell unfortunately. To reveal the menus, a QR code on the tables can be scanned. We came here for dine in as we were craving Japanese food. They have a large variety of options to choose from and we got the pork tender katsu and the pork loin curry. Both were well made with delicious panko but I would say the katsu is not at the level of Saku in Vancouver or Katsu San in Richmond. The curry was good but we wish there was a little more sauce. I would recommend Mr Japanese Curry in Vancouver if looking for Japanese curry. I also do not know if they offer free refills of rice or salad as we weren't asked. My girlfriend and I wanted to try something different than Sushi or Pizza for dinner, so since we were in the area, we decided to stop in and try this place. I ordered the Carbonara Udon, and it was very surprisingly good. It was my first experience of combining an asian style noodle with a european style creamy & rich sauce. I understand it isn't necessarily considered "fusion cuisine" to some people but to me it certainly felt like it. I have to say that never in my life would I have thought that it would be so good. The service was pretty good as well, and the price was very reasonable for the size of ortion and quality of the dish. the decor worked really well with the restaurant's ambiance and it felt chic, clean and inviting. The one place this restaurant lost some points from me was because when I came, it was near the end of the COVID19 pandemic restrictions. I presented my usual proof of vaccination/ID that was conveniently in my apple wallet. It is important to note that Ive never had any issues with this form of ID/Vaccine Passport. The hostess insisted that I still pull out my Driver's license and vaccine card as she had never seen such proof of vaccination so it couldn't be valid. Her lack of knowledge and closed-mindedness should not have resulted in irritating both of us, embarrassing me in front of many other guests and leaving a bit of a "bitter taste" in my mouth. At least the food was delicious and that made up for the unpleasantness of the situation. I would definitely recommend getting the sauce on the side if you want to try it. The chicken karaage was average and would not get it again. I think this place is a good place to grab a quick meal by yourself, cute little date or even a small gathering. Most tables are meant for 2-4 people. You might want to call ahead if you plan on bringing 4+ people. The last time I was there, I saw a gathering of 10+ however I'm not sure how likely you would be able to fit everyone in during peak time. Overall, I'm a fan. Katsuya has an extension selection of different types of cutlets (pork, chicken, fish, sweet potato, etc.) with different sauces (original, curry, carbonara, spicy, etc.). They also have some unique menu items like honey butter fries and crabmeat croquettes. Their portion sizes are large and as with many other tonkatsu places, it comes with unlimited cabbage and miso soup. In terms of the quality of tonkatsu, it is above average and reasonable for its price point but not at a premium taste like Saku or Mr. Tonkatsu. I say this because the batter/fried skin came apart from the meat while we were eating and the fried texture wasn't as light and crispy.
