We decided to dine here since it's known as a Houston institution and man, do I wish I had something good to say. Firstly, the menu is insanely large (never a good sign) and the prices were way too high compared to most deli spots. I mean, I've eaten at Carnegie Deli for less and they had the largest, best sandwich of my life. Secondly, the service was horrendous. We waited over thirty minutes for our drinks and had to ask numerous times to order our food. Thirdly, when the food arrived , it was wrong. The Three Stooges was supposed to come on French bread but was on Rye. The michelada was literally just beer with a dash of hot sauce in it and the margarita flight was the same marg mix with chunky puréed fruit sauce in each. Back to the bad service, when it was time to leave we had to ask for our check three times. Needless to say we will not be coming back. read more

We were visiting Houston for a soccer tournament and looking for a great deli sandwich shop on Saturday evening. The bartender at a local hot-spot, "Handlebar" suggested KATZ's Deli and based on his description, we were out the door and headed to KATZ's Deli. Found free parking in their lot on the first try and had to stop and take a pic of the outdoor signage which was classic. Walked in the front door and we were greeted with a glass case full of huge chocolate cakes and baked goods! The staff greeted us and took us up a stairway to seating on the second floor. Classic NY décor and a strong menu with the expected Deli specialties... They have a full bar and we ordered a couple drinks. The waitress was great and answered the questions we had about the different items. Surprise, surprise that we ordered a NY sized REUBEN SANDWHICH with onion rings. It was great... and HUGE! My previous experiences at Katz's have all been very positive, and I have loved all their cakes. This time around, unfortunately, I don't think I can continue raving about them. I had suggested Katz's for a frIends dessert birthday party since we needed a place that opened late. Upon calling, I found that they don't take reservations but was told I could call an hour before the event to ask them to get our table ready. She also suggested we request the upstairs area since it was more private and quieter. On the day of the birthday party I did exactly that and was told that they are going to start prepping our table upstairs. Upon arriving, the hostess (or whoever she was) told me that they had no such request and that because our party was so large (14+), we could only sit downstairs because "we only have one waiter upstairs". I explained that I had done as instructed and she just shrugged. "We only have one waiter upstairs" she repeated, "so I suggest you sit down here." Not wanting to make a huge scene, we complied. I have to admit though, our waiter for the night was AMAZING. He took very good care of us (considering how busy the place was) and remembered most our requests. I have to give him some grace since the place was packed and we really did have A LOT of requests because we were such a large party. Unfortunately it was super loud and I felt like I was screaming at the person across the table. Not very pleasant. I felt like we had chosen to dine here because the person over the phone said it would be quiet upstairs but that wasn't even an option. As for the cakes, they were disappointing. My carrot cake was super dry and the Oreo cheesecake just average. The birthday girl did enjoy her NY cheesecake though, so at least that was a win. I may come back to give them another try, but definitely won't be recommending them for future large party events. read more

This was a unique find for a morning breakfast in Houston at two in the morning. This morning I decided to go with eggs hash brown and turkey bacon. It was better than any Denny's or waffle house however not quite on the level of a Premier breakfast. I enjoyed the fast service of the wait staff especially at the early hour of the morning. They were pretty efficient and were able to get my mail to me super fast.In the future I would like to try this restaurant for lunch or even a dinner. Jessica was tending the bar, made me a great Moscow mule, she was super friendly and was working really hard. The food was really great, had a monte cristo, and the chicken noodle matzo ball soup. I've eaten here before but Jessica had such great service had to write a good review. FYI if you're used to NYC pastrami from the Katz there, it is totally different but they have plenty of great choices. Just for all the spoiled people that are use to having Katz pastrami in New York you might be disappointed. This morning, My To-Go order was slightly over-cooked and that made for one unhappy wife that was immediately HANGRY. No worries there because I was the one that had to deal with her privately in the truck...but luckily our order was corrected immediately and cooked to perfection. If you want something tasty, quick and did I mention tasty..? This place is for you! Food- I got the Rueben (no cheese) and French fries as a side. You can get 3 different sizes of the sandwich of your choice. I got the klassic, which is the middle sized and it's HUGE. I can only eat half, if I get a side. The bread was warm and crispy on the outside and the meat was really tender and melted in your mouth. The sauerkraut was delicious too. I'm a huge fan of French fries and honestly, I love Katz French fries. They're always so crispy and have a great flavor. Service- Our waiter was awesome! He was quick, attentive and he could read my lips when he was in the middle of the room, so he always knew if I needed something or not, which is pretty impressive. I felt valued as a customer and he really took my food allergies into consideration, which is huge for me. Ambiance/Inside- The inside is VERY neat. It looks like an old school diner with a modern twist. It's a little chilly, but I think that's what helps it feel like one of those old time diners. They have upstairs and downstairs, which is nice. OK, so now that the weather is getting cooler and my thoughts are going back to my college days, I thought I'd re-live my days in Austin by having a few good meals at Katz's. Short version: a charming, sophisticated 24-hour eatery with New York-style atmosphere (minus the rudeness), big portions of classic deli dishes and desserts that will make you hug your Bubbie! As Mr. Katz was fond of saying in the 1980s: "You'll PLOTZ!" Long version: I grew very attached to Katz's in Austin on West 6th at Rio Grande, especially during football season when other places were closed. I hadn't been to the Houston location in a while, so when a couple of us found ourselves starving after the Texas-Rice game at NRG, we decided to indulge in some Austin nostalgia by coming to Katz's. I'm dang glad I did! Katz's is an Austin institution, and the Houston version is just as good (if not better). The menu is a takeoff on the delicatessens you find in Manhattan, so if any of y'all have been to the Carnegie Deli, the Roxy in Times Square or even the original Katz's on Houston Street (pronounced "HOW-ston," not the way we call our city), you know what I'm talking about. Deli food is definitely an authentic American style. It used to be you could find them from New York to Los Angeles. Unfortunately, the low-fat and anti-meat mania over the last couple of decades has had its effect, but so have newer and more faddish forms of food that make hot pastrami, liverwurst, and matzoh ball soup seem hopelessly old-fashioned. Not at Katz's. What's old is new again, and you can come here in either shorts and flips or a full tuxedo and still feel right at home. First off, make sure that you ask for the not-on-the-menu free pickles and slaw to start off with. Back in Austin in the 1980s, Katz's would have mini-buckets of kosher dill pickles sitting on the table along with kosher mustard, ketchup, salt, pepper, hot sauce and other condiments. Unfortunately, that has all changed and you have to ask for them now. But hey - they're free. And trust me, when you're a young college frat boy at 3 am, a few half-sour pickles with deli mustard is just the thing to fix what ails you. But I digress. Next, check out both the daily specials as well as the sandwiches. These sandwiches are gigantic! Even if you order the "skinny" size, which is the smallest, you'll get a big helping of freshly sliced meats and veggies on your choice of bread (toasted or untoasted). The other two sizes are Klassic (pretty big) and NY Style (YUGE!) Having eaten at various NYC delis, I was wondering if their Reuben was authentic. Two words: IT IS. No lie here. The Katz's Reuben (order it on toasted rye - you're welcome) is the real deal. I swear, after eating it I felt like Meg Ryan in "When Harry Met Sally." I wanted to bang on the table and yell "YES! YES! YES!" However, not wanting to embarrass my table, I quietly indulged in my food orgasm. ("I'll have what he's having," my friend quipped.) Desserts are truly decadent, albeit a bit pricey. A slice of authentic NY-style cheesecake will run you about $8.99 - and it's enough to feed all three Golden Girls. A perfect one to share with your friends (that is, unless you're already stuffed). What really sucks about writing this review is that the food is good if it's cooked correctly! I've been here so many times (years ago) and it was pretty good but my more recent visits over the last 2-3 years have been so bad. I wasn't going to write a review but I actually got up and left this place after waiting an hour for breakfast and only half of our order coming out correctly... This place has the worst cooks & worst management I've EVER seen. The employees (with the exception of a few) and just clueless and have no business in a service type industry. They lack the sense of urgency and attention to detail it takes to get orders correct! They have some good menu options, the pancakes being one of the don't come out the color of a pecan... I always ask for them to come out light and when they do, it's better than ihop - sadly it's RARE They have some good sandwiches, great potato latkes, decent matzo ball soup and when they don't murder the eggs/omelette it's great! This place has terrible coffee and tea and the desserts are not worth the price! It's a cool atmosphere but again the service and length of time you wait for that bad service is pathetic! I've been to Katz about 3 times and it hasn't disappointed me at all. The staff is always cheerful and nice, patient and suggestive of items. This time I tried the Buffalo Sandwich and it was amazing, I didn't expect this thing to be this HUGE, there was such a generous amount of chicken on the sandwich I was in love! The flavor was a nice beat that wasn't overwhelming or too much. And the fries were crisp to perfection. The BBS does have a potent taste of ginger so be a little weary but it gives you a nice antioxidant boost I'd say for sure! read more

Kenny & Ziggy's in Houston is the best and is an authentic NY deli that rates a 10 on a 1-10 scale. Katz's is a 1 or maybe a 2 on a good day. The tuna salad is runny and flavor-less, The pot roast tasted stale. The nova lox is tank-farm-raised. The bagels are bland and seem like the frozen kind. I love Kurtz's deli, especially when I'm in the hospital at dowmtown Methodist and I order vie door dash. The gnosh basket is one of my fave things to order, with potato cakes, hot sausage, raspberry sauce, and cheese curds, but that's not all. It's got jalapeno poppers and more. I almost always order the pastrami rueben. It's so good. You can get it full sized, which is huge, or get a regular or a skinny if you don't want the huge sandwich. We came here at 1 in the morning after a concert in the Woodlands since we were staying close by. We were quoted a 15 minute wait but it ended up being like a 5 minute wait. Once seated it was probably a solid 10 mins before anyone came to our table but the waitress apologized and she gave pretty good service the rest of the time. They had a great selection on the menu and we loved the things we ordered. I was surprised to learn the "ham" in the Monte cristo was cured turkey. It was a great sandwich and my husband really enjoyed his sandwich. Food (Im not Jewish in heritage but my bf is, so some of this is his input as well) The appetizers including latkes, matzah ball soups were great! We were quite pleasantly surprised.
