Over the years and after a move or two the food has morphed slightly, but the yummy quality remains solid here. As of April 2026, it's probably the best hot chicken sandwich in town. We always order from the spicier side of menus, and there's no question when you get your food that they aren't playing around. I'm a little torn on how to rate this place. Mico's was one of the first hot chicken spots to hit Houston. I remember the hype this place got as they started out and moved from their original spot to this new spot on Shepard. Now that they have inside seating, I figured it was time to check them out. I was in the area at a local bar with friends, and a few friends ordered Mico's through DoorDash. It looked and smelled so good that I decided I had to have it that night, but at the restaurant. I pulled up to what looks a new building. They share a lot with other businesses but I was able to get a parking spot easily. The restaurant is spacious with lots of seating. They also have bar seating by the register. When I looked around, I noticed alot of people waiting on food. It was a mix of food delivery drivers as well as patrons that had ordered and waiting. There was a customer at the counter going off on the employees and I got to commend the young staff for keeping their cool. That being said, the young staff was friendly and trying their best, but they were drowning and the mood in the place was off. Items were forgotten. People were not getting their food in the order of when they ordered. Four parties ordered after me, with similar items and everyone got their orders before mine. I think I was forgotten and only after one of the staff noticed me waiting did they come and look at my receipt. Time from ordering to receiving my food was close to 40 minutes. This is a hot chicken place that is trying to be somewhat fancy. I was served my food on a nice plated plate. Nice touch, but it felt off for the food being served here. They also give utensils in cloth napkins. No paper towels or napkins in sight. Hot chicken is messy and the cloth napkins was not doing it for me. I ended up up knife and forking my sandwich to keep the messy hands from happening. They also serve their fountain drinks in small cups filled to the brim with us. A few swigs and my drink was almost gone. For a place serving spicy food, a soda fountain with refills or readily available water should be available and out front. Now to the good part. The food was outstanding. I ordered the Chicken Sandwich at their hottest level which also came with a side. I got the waffle fries. The sandwich was voted one of the best dishes in the state by Texas Monthly and I can see why. It was a hefty sandwich with a large chicken breast seasoned to perfection. I always love when their is a little hangover of the chicken outside of the bun. The chicken was crispy but juicy inside. The heat was there but totally bearable with the cooling component of the delicious slaw on top. I usually pick pickles off sandwiches, but the pickles here were good and the acidity added a pleasant touch to the sandwich. The waffle fries were also excellent. They were the battered and seasoned kind which I love. The food most definitely saved the overall experience on my visit here. I will say it is one of the better hot chickens I have had in Houston. Now if they go back to their roots and not try to be fancy and do better on their customer service, I can see this place sticking around for a long time. I went to their brick n mortar location couple of weeks ago and wasn't impressed with the food at all. It seems that the quality has changed from their food truck days. I ordered the sandwich and the chicken was ok. It was not flavorful and the buns were like barely luke warm. Fries were fine. Service is a little different. Order at counter and then pickup food at counter. For drinks like ice tea, no refills are provided. Food was presented in plates on trays with utensils. It felt very weird. Not impressed. I really love Mico's, which is why this is disappointing to write. During the day, the food is usually great, but the last two times I've gone near closing time, the chicken seemed completely different almost like it was freshly breaded at home rather than the quality I'm used to from Mico's. My most recent order was over $50, and unfortunately all of us ended up throwing our sandwiches away because the seasoning was extremely salty and overpowered everything else. Since it was close to closing time, we weren't allowed to dine in, so we drove 20 minutes back home before realizing how disappointing the meal was. I honestly think take-out is the way to go here. I was very excited to see this place moved indoors, but they really need to work on front-of-house logistics. The cashier showed no urgency, and when they ran out of mac and cheese, we were told to choose another side... but oddly, salad wasn't allowed even though it was listed as a side (?). There's plenty of space inside to sit after you order. Food came out in a reasonable time, but we had to ask on separate occasions for water, then silverware, then napkins, and then sauce... none of which were provided up front or when the food came out. That being said though, the food itself was as good as I remembered from the outdoor stand. Chicken is crunchy, juicy, and perfectly spicy (I'd stick with mild if you're sensitive). The toast comes glazed with sugar and pairs so well with the spicy chicken. And the Mico's sauce and hot honey are the best sauces to go with the chicken. This is a lowkey counter ordering chicken place, but with lots of places to sit. The chicken was nice and crispy and very homestyle sides and options. We got both the chicken sandwhich, mac and cheese, and loaded waffle fries and they did not disappoint. Very saucy, and if you get mild its sweet (which they point out to you). If you are looking for some customizable hot chicken(from mild to very hot!) try this place. If your looking for some southern classics, also try this place. Stopped here in the middle of a storm before heading to the airport and I couldn't have been happier with my final meal in Houston. THE BEST fried chicken spot in Htown by far! Whether you get a sammich or tenders you are in a good spot! Spice level is awesome as well. You can already feel the kick with the medium spice level. Still one of the best hot chicken places in Houston in my opinion. The heat levels are true medium is actually what you would expect it to be so spicy is actually really spicy. If you like hot food, I recommend medium, but if you can handle the heat get the spicy, but you might regret it later. I usually place my orders to go. I hadn't been to Mico's in a few years. I was shocked to see the new location but happy they are still around. Upon walking in the staff was all friendly and greeted us with a smile. We ordered two chicken sandwiches "medium" with a side of fries and a lemonade. Upon arrival the visual of the sandwich and slaw is mouth watering. The fries were so fresh a sun crispy...made us regret not ordering the fried pickles as well. All the amazing flavors we remember from Mico's is still there. There is an inside RR and an outside patio Strips are HUGE, they're juicy and they will make your nose run!! Mico's sauce is good, kinda like a thousand island dressing. You will need A LOT of baby wipes and/or napkins cuz all that spice comes off on your fingers!
