What a great place!!! So many samples to try! The coffee is truly some of the best we've had. It is better than kona coffee in my opinion. This is my favorite coffee mill and tasting room on the Big Island. It is in a beautiful location and the people are extremely courteous and friendly. They are generous with the sampling of their various blends. They also offer an excellent lunch menu. Their Imu sandwich is wonderful. I believe the coffee beans from the Ka'u region are far superior to the much hyped Hilo and Kona beans. I have visited this mill multiple times and have had a wonderful experience each visit. While on vacation, we were driving around the island, headed towards Hilo when we spotted the signs for this place. I don't have much of a point of reference, but it was located back amongst a neighborhood of modest homes, back up in the hills. It was really beautiful up there with the trees, wind, etc. So the great part is free macadamia nut and coffee tasting...and there are lots of things to try (and buy). Everything was quite good. Before leaving, I bought one of the bags they keep the beans in for storage. Makes a great artistic memory at home, as it is now hanging on the wall. Really nice people working there too at the visitors area. Even got to take my kids up close to the coffee trees. Just a nice little stop at a real coffee plantation. read more

Wonderful place with very friendly staff. Loved seeing the land trust in action and drinking the fantastic coffee. We could have stayed all day in their lovely patio. Do try the coconut flavor and dark roast. Also the wasabi macadamia nuts! read more

We took a detour to this place on our way to see volcanoes( from Kona). Staffs are super nice, explain to us how different processes to process coffee. Coffee are pretty good- I am not an coffee expert to tell. Free samples of all kinds of coffee and macadamia nuts. We did not get to see the coffee processing due to holidays, they did offer to take us for a tour to the coffee farm. The place is very nice,big, clean. Super cool quick stop. The ladies in the gift shop are super nice and will explain how everything works and the farm and roaster. You can sample all their coffee and macnuts to see what you want to buy. They do offer tours most days but were short handed when we went. However, they will take good care of you and make you feel at home. Great 30 minute stop if you are in the area. read more

Go during the week if you want to tour. One of the sales ladies gave us an informative talk on the differences of the Kona, Hilo, and Ka'u coffees. Ka'u coffee is becoming more recognized. They had different samples to try. Nice flavors. Would have bought some the estate coffees if I was a coffee connoisseur. They also had many varieties of Hamakua macadamia nuts to try. They said they provide the nuts to their sister store, the Hamakua Nut Company which we were going to see the next day. Figuring the prices were the same, we bought here. Bad idea. Prices are much cheaper at the Hamakua Nut Company and better deals. One would think prices would be equal. Would have saved at least $30. If the distance wasn't so far, I would return the items and go buy at Hamakua Nut. read more

A clean, friendly, well-designed, and welcoming center for the Ka'u coffee company. Staff met us at the door and quickly explained the coffee washing types and then let us have at the coffee sampling bar. First time I tried "natural unwashed" process and that alone was worth the stop. Nice folks, easy pleasant stop. read more

Great place to taste some delicious coffee. I normally drink tea, but their coffee is so good I had several samples. Yelp says they are open Sunday, but they are not. We went there and found the gate locked. Fortunately we were staying close enough to go back Monday morning. read more

Took a trip looking for lava and stumbled upon this coffee plantation. The service was awesome and full of information on the surrounding area as well as the 10 or so different coffees they had inside. Sampled all of them with her help. Saw Ka'u Coffee Mill on Yelp, and on the way back to Kailua-Kona from Volcano we made a detour to try some coffee. We barely made it in with about 15 minutes before they closed, so we couldn't tour the mill, which was a little bit of a bummer, but we still got to try their amazing coffee. For some context, I've had coffee from Blue Bottle, Four Barrel, and Sightglass in San Francisco, and Portola Coffee Lab in Southern California. The coffee at Ka'u Coffee Mill rivals any coffee I've had at the "premier" third wave coffee shops in CA. Even better, all of the coffee was grown, harvested, processed, and roasted at their farm and mill, which is very cool. The woman behind the counter was very friendly and helpful, even though we got there late. I left with a bag of their natural dark roasted coffee, and their washed medium roast. The washed was very light and citrusy, which was surprising, as I was used to Kona coffee (which I learned is very different from Ka'u coffee) is very earthy. The natural dark roast was incredibly rich and flavorful, and was some of the best dark-roast coffee I've ever had. Very awesome tour! It was short and sweet, but extremely informative. All of the staff was friendly and eager to help answer any questions. We were able to go "behind the scenes" and see all stages of coffee. As with any gift shop, everything is pricey, but it is due to every bean being hand picked. We weren't expecting much out of the tour, but then it turned out to be one of the best things we did that day (and we stopped by the black sand beach after the coffee stop too). My husband and I visited on 5/24/16. We loved learning about the coffee and history of the island through out tour guide, Frank. He was very informative and passionate about the island. The staff is super friendly and we really enjoyed tasting the different coffees and macadamia nuts. We brought two other couples to Hawaii that had never been before. We had visited the Black Sand Beach, seen the turtles, and then spotted the Ka'u Coffee Mill signs so decided to check it out. We got there just as a tour bus was finishing their tour and tasting. We went into the tasting room/gift shop and tried all their samples. On our way to the covered area for a picnic lunch, Louis Daniele the Sales Executive asked if we'd like a tour. We agreed and followed him to the orchard. He went out of his way to inform us all about the operation, history, botany, and insect problems of the plantations on the Big Island. He showed us the entire process from tree to cup! We had a great time and education! He was even surprised when we knew his roasters were from Sand Point, ID. Needless to say, we would highly recommend a visit here. Nothing wrong with the products; however, gotta be nicer to the kama'aina!! Took friends from the mainland to visit the gift shop and more importantly, to buy stuff. This was my second trip to the Mill. First trip was about 3 months ago and again last week. First trip, the cashier asked me if I was kama'aina, which is quite obvious, and gave me a 10% discount. On the second visit last week, my gf paid and I observed. I noticed that the cashier didn't offer my gf a 10% discount. After paying, I approached the cashier regarding the 10% discount and she said that the kama'aina need to take the initiative and show their Hawaii ID. The cashier's comment was "we changed our policy so now it's up to the customer to show their ID". C'mon!! How are you supposed to know that? There is no sign about a 10% discount for kama'aina to begin with. Who goes to a store, pays with cash, and presents their ID??!! Later, I told my gf about this and she went back into the shop to ask for her 10% discount. Cashier told her she needed to ask someone "in the back". Fortunately, my gf got her $6 discount. I don't understand reasoning for not offering a discount to "da locals" who bring tourist to the Mill to purchase coffee, mac nuts, and other items, WITHOUT a 10% discount!!
