Amazing place! This is so far the only kava bar I've been to that does kava the traditional way. I love it!

Yeah, kava does kind of taste like watered-down dirt. Candice G. nailed Kava Bar completely from the apt description of the dated tiki vibe down to the taste of the kava. The three stars is not so much for the ambiance or experience, but more because I don't think I can say "Yay, I'm a fan!" to kava. The people here are lovely. The owner asked us if we had ever tried it before and offered a sample to taste it before we committed. I mean it didn't taste great, but it wasn't terrible either, and we were pretty curious of the experience of drinking kava and expected sensations. You take a seat, and they bring you out a large bowl of it with cute little cups that you ladle the kava into. After sharing a small bowl between two people, I felt a little dizzy and very thirsty. I could see it being a really chill experience for kava fanatics. The place seems to be frequented by regulars (groups of older dudes) who come here in the afternoon to relax, chit chat, and maybe play some pool. 9 PM on Wednesday, I was looking for a local late night tea/coffee type setting, Everything was closing except a 24/7 Starbucks, and never heard of Kava root. To my great delight, I found this hidden gem right in my own backyard downtown San Bruno. While my guest and I were the only ones there, the owner made us feel very welcome, giving us a sample to try of kava root, and making us feel at home. It is served in a large bowl to share with someone. It has an earthy taste but what I loved about it is the after tingle affect. It makes you feel relaxed and actually slept very well afterwards. While the pool table might make you think it is a bar, and the merchandise on the wall when you first walk in that it is a shop, it is quite relaxing with some reggae playing in the background and painted mural light covers makes you feel like you want to be on vacation on a sandy beach. I had no idea it had been here close to four years but I hope it will be here for many years to come. Kava Bar San Bruno is one of the best Kava bars I've been to in the United States, and I've been to plenty. From Austin to Colorado and California, I'm always uniquely pleased with this Kava Bar. The experience is very authentic. You order a bowl of Kava, not individual shells. This promotes an atmosphere of relaxation and time dilation unlike any other bar experience; you are not constantly having to ask for another drink. Simply serve yourself from your bowl. This is also more economical for the drinker. The value at the Kava bar on San Bruno is literally the best I've ever seen. Not only is it good for your wallet, but its good for your health. Rakesh, the owner and operator, imports whole root from Fiji, his home, and brush cleans it before preparing his own root powder post drying. This means its guaranteed to be without leaves which contain harmful alkaloids. Not all Kava businesses are so dedicated to clean kava! All in all, 10/10 experience for customer service, quality, atmosphere, and even parking. I try to bring all my friends to the Kava Bar. Plus, its a good room to play pool in, plenty of competition. My bf has been in the kava scene for a little bit now and he introduced me to this place. We make the drive down from the city to hit up this down-to-earth spot. Rakesh, the owner, has always been super friendly and welcoming. There's a regular crowd here on Friday nights and I can often overhear them cracking jokes at each other and just having a good time. As an fyi, the smallest bowl goes for $10 and produces maybe 8-10 shells total! He also serves mangoes on the side. :) There are also other Fijian goodies that are sold here if you're feeling peckish. Not only does Rakesh pound the kava himself, he also sells it if you're so inclined to try making it on your own. My bf and I come down here so he can buy a pouch ($20, I believe?). This is the smoothest kava I've ever had-- and my bf said the same and he's been around the block when it comes to kava! Neat place! Me and my friend wandered in out of curiousity and the (presumed) owner welcomed us, sat us down, and got right to work with preparing us a cup of kava just to try. We were slightly skeptical about the touted effects of the drink (deep relaxation and/or euphoria) but after a our first round we were definitely feeling lighter and extremely relaxed. Apparently the drink can enhance one's meditative state and we may or may not have made a spiritual musing or two over our second cup ;) Definitely check this place out if you want a novel experience, an alternative to your traditional bar, and a natural method to reduce stress and anxiety after a lomg day (they stay open till midnight and i can see this being an excellent 'nightcap'). 1 star for unreliable hours. This is the 2nd time I've driven to this place and they're closed. WTF!!! What's worse is that I called yesterday shortly before 5pm and the guy that answered the phone said they were closed. Sounded like a party going on in the background. I asked him if they'd be open today (Labor Day) and he said "Yes". Surprised, I said, "You're open tomorrow?" and he said, "Yes, at 1pm." I drove by today (Labor Day) and there's a sign on the door that says they're closed. If you want customers to call first before coming and you tell them you'll be open but you're not, that's bad business! Have consideration for people who don't live nearby. I have been wanting to try this place, so I finally visited on a Thursday evening. There were a couple different groups of people hanging out and enjoying their kava, creating a friendly atmosphere. There was a pool table and television; decor could have been better, but it lent to an unintimidating environment in a place that could easily be filled with know-it-all, snooty types.
