It was our first time going to a kava bar, and we let the bartender know (idk his name, but really chill dude with long hair (dreads-adjacent?) and a cool hat), and he told us about a first timer special which is a strong bowl of kava intended to be drank quickly to build the unique "reverse tolerance" effect of kava. For the kava bowls, you can order the smaller or larger bowl. I ordered larger bowls, she ordered smaller ones. Both were a great amount imo. I'm 6'5" 260, a bit of a tank, so I ordered the following throughout our ~2.5 hours there: 1. First timer special 2. Large Borogu 3. Large Yaqona 4. Large Portland Pacific 5. I experienced discrimination at this bar. I am a tourist from Europe and wanted to buy a drink. Since I don't have a U.S. driver's license, I presented my valid European passport, which clearly shows my photo and date of birth. Instead of accepting it, I was told that they only sell alcoholic drinks to people with an American passport. I found this response extremely offensive and disrespectful toward international visitors. A valid passport is an official government-issued form of identification, regardless of the country that issued it. I felt that I was treated differently because of my nationality, which made me feel unwelcome. I hope the management reviews its policies and ensures that foreign visitors are treated with the same respect as everyone else. read more

I visited Kava Saia Tea House for a nightcap before heading back to my hotel. They offered traditional kava, clariteas, kava shots, kava sodas, and kava mocktails. The ambiance felt very warm and welcoming with plenty of seating areas and a pool table in the back. Yes we need more late night tea houses. Was pleasantly surprised to find Kava Saia amongst many bars on Burnside. Very cool interior with a bar seating (like what you'd find jn a bar) and lots of cute seating nooks. I tried 3 of their herbal teas and they are delicious. Service was excellent. They also had a pool table in the back and tons of games you can play. I wish we had more late night tea & coffee spots that had a bar vibe like Kava Saia. read more

This place is amazing. I have been to Kava bars all over the country and lived in Hawaii. I've been to the first bar to sell Kratom in the US and hands down Nick and Hannah product is by far the best I have had. The problem that I run into at Kava bars is they rarely higher from the hospitality industry. Not this place you get great and friendly service. A true kava and tea lounge. It's a chill and comfortable environment where you can enjoy your drinks. Friendly folks both the owners, bartenders and patrons. The drinks are delicious with the co-owners custom blends of herbals and delicious flavors. The kava is quality and you have several choices to choose from. The kratom tea is strong and quality. The bar also has a small shop inside it with cool t-shirts, rugs, pillows and other memorabilia. Really cool atmosphere and great place to hangout. Kava is a really incredible plant, and I highly recommend trying it! The staff is very friendly and helpful and will happily explain everything to you, so don't be intimidated if you don't know what to order! Also love all of the different drink options they offer. Kava naturally tastes like a muddy water, so they offer delicious shots and mocktails that you can add kava too which is so cool! Kava bars has been a huge help for me as someone who doesn't like to drink, but still craves socializing and getting out. First time trying kava, which is a plant of which its root can be made into a drink with supposed relaxing, euphoric effects. Came across this tea house after eating nearby and thought it'd be interesting to try since my friend had a decent experience with it back in CA. The barista was very nice and offered us two classic kava drinks on the house to start with since it was my first time trying, which apparently requires higher "dose" to feel anything since people paradoxically have a higher tolerance with less experience? By default kava tastes like dirt lol so be warned, but my friend also ordered a horchata kava mixed drink after finishing our bowls of classic kava. The horchata version tasted delicious, nothing like the kava root, but I think the barista said it was a lower "dose" than a full classic drink? I personally did not feel anything after chugging the first kava drink, not even really the supposed throat numbing feeling you're supposed to have, so not sure if I'd do it again if it requires multiple rounds of this drink... but was fun to try for the first time! read more

Not only is the staff knowledgeable on Kava, but you can tell that they put intention into their menu. It feels like home. I moved to Portland a couple of weeks ago and I feel incredibly comfortable in this environment. The owners put so much intention into the space. Hannah curated the menu, including blending the tea herbs herself to create the unique options. Nick is a wizard when it comes to the kava. Iman and Chase add a uniqueness to the space as well. Everyone who works at Kava Saia is incredibly welcoming. I'm sober and they are so open and inclusive of sober folks. When I'm having a hard time or I want to celebrate, I know exactly where to go. read more

My partner and I came to this Kava bar 10/28. I found someone's phone in the bathroom and tried to hand it to the worker at the bar. He yelled out super loud "ew that has feces on it" and would not hold on to it. I then found the person who the phone belonged to and returned it to them. My partner ordered two tea's for us. Both were served in extremely hot clear glass cups that were filled to the brim with near boiling water. There were no saucers to protect himself for being burned. He ended up burning himself ready bad when he was carefully walking his tea over to our table. He ordered a mate. I was a former tea barista myself and I know that mates are supposed to be steeped between 160f-180f. This was beyond that due to the severity of his burn. We will not be returning. read more
